Just a thought. Better Uniforms for better Image!

After two games we have seen Tech in two of three of the standard uniform formats.   The all red is rare but is nice to see.  Black with a silver white pants kinda is sucky in the way it looks.   The all black is like the red and it definitely has a mental effect with both players and fans.

The best uniform combo was the Black shirt with the metallic red pants that was displayed some years ago.  I am talking about the Black shirt with red highlights version of the black Tech has.

I know that we have several versions of uniforms. But honestly,  the effect of color does impress a mental effect on both players and fans and especially opposing teams.  I know this for a fact. Teams that have multi- color uniforms see to do better because of the shock value.  I saw a study once that some Ivy league school did on color and game effects. It basically stated that strong and shocking differences in color do cause intimidation and makes players seen bigger and more powerful than they really are.  It goes back to society conditioning.

Tech is very fortunate in that the two most violent colors are red and black. So why not use it to our advantage?

Boise State uses color is its shock effect with the Blue field.  Which by the way,  Darker blue is 4th in the list of shocking colors.  Red, Black, Bright bright yellow,  Blue ( non pastels or dark), Bright orange, Bright green, Super bright white.

Do not take my word for it, read what Nike has to say about its new line of shoes which come in 5 colors called the Dunk High shocking color shoes.  They are Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, silver and white. Even in the ads they point to what I am refering to.  You can see an ad of this at http://www.geeksneakers.com/nike/nylon-magazine-x-nike-sportswear-dunk-high-sense-shocking-colors.  This ad only shows three of the so called shocking colors Bright Yellow, Bright Blue and Bright Orange.  You can visit the Nike site and scroll around to fine bright Varsity Red,  Metallic silver, Coal black and bright white versions.

Nike admits along with many others that the list of shocking colors make people look much more agressive and intimidating than they really are.  So I ask, why not do it for games like Texas, Oklahoma State, and OU.

We do

when we can. Last year against UT we were in all black. For Ok State we were in black tops with white pants, but I have a feeling this might have been an intentional slight on Leach’s part. And of course for away games we don’t have a choice. Our white tops just don’t really go with red, black or white pants. Another white on black. We wore black pants agains Kansas, K State, and OU last year (maybe others I didn’t check). I think of the three I’d just assume roll in all white away and all black at home, but if you do all black for every home game it loses some of its edge imo.

So I’m not disagreeing with your post in any way… just saying I think Leach does a good job of using our colors when possible.

I know we do change up uniforms

But there is a problem! You pointed it out though you missed the full idea.

In away games, the Shirts have to be mostly white. The pants can be anything. So why not Red Pants, Black Pants or a 50/50 pants which we have and have used in the past of red and black.

In home games, We can have all red, All black, red and black. But as you pointed out, White pants and the silver pants just do not have that effect.

We have 5 games which we are in the away position.

That means we have 7 games in the Home. If you do 2 of each of the three that I suggest, then it does not lose the shock value. Think of it this way,

1. All Red
2. All Black
3. Red Shirt Black Pants
4. Black Shirt Black pants
5. The 50/50 uniform

For away,
1. White with heavy red with Red pants
2. White with black only with Black pants
3. White mix of red black with Red pants
4. White with mix red and black with Black pants.

All of these I have stated we have now! Its not like we do not have these or have to order them.

There is a reason as Techgolf44 points out. The colors for Tech is great for a very physical sport. Its time that we stop using the white or silver practice pants in games.

Uniforms in top 5 with teenagers

There was poll about College Uniforms I saw last year and teenagers and young adults voted Oregon #1 because of all the choices and cool look. surprisingly TTech was #2 or #3!!!! I do like the all red, all black, red tops & black pants, and black tops & red pants. I don’t care for the white pants @ home @ all. On the road I like the red pants. That is a throw back of sorts to the 1960’s and severeal other times during the last 30 years. We seem to have had the same look from UA for the last 3 years and I thought we might get a little different look this year. I wish UA( which I love being supplied by) would give us some new jerseys even in the middle of the year. So on Saturday I expect red pants!!!!! Maybe black but I don’t like the all white look. Wreck’em Tech

NCAA Rule Change on Uniforms

A team can wear a color jersey on the road — if it is approved by the home team and the conference. If not approved, the visiting team is assessed a penalty on kick-off. It appears you may now wear whatever color you choose as long as you’re willing to start off the game at -15 yards.

Last I heard

the penalty is a Time Out at the beginning of each half that you show up in colored uniforms. This happened because of some neutral site game last year where tradition before this rule was that both teams wore their colored uniforms. The coaches wanted to bring it back, so the ‘away’ team wore their colors and took the loss of 2 time outs. As a sign of respect the ‘home’ team also called a time out in the first second of each half so both teams played on an even field with 2 time outs per half. I would be very surprised if this caught on as normal operating procedure for conference games and the like. This is something that will be for traditional matchups like the one we saw last season between… USC and someone maybe? I can’t remember who the two teams were off the top of my head.

I was right

USC vs. UCLA . Not positive about the neutral site and the article doesn’t say, but you get the idea. Since noone in this conference will claim us as a rival we couldn’t really get away with the ‘we should both wear colors since it is a rivalry game’ excuse haha.

Right on the history; wrong on the current rule

USC vs. UCLA was the primary reason for this year’s rule change.

1-4-3-a Jersey Colors

ARTICLE 3. a. Players of opposing teams shall wear jerseys of contrasting colors. Players on the same team shall wear jerseys of the same color and design.
1. The visiting team shall wear white jerseys; however, the home team may wear white jerseys if the teams have agreed in writing before the season.
2. If the home team wears colored jerseys, the visiting team may also wear colored jerseys, if and only if the following conditions have been satisfied:
a. The home team has agreed in writing prior to the game; and
b. The conference of the home team certifies that the jersey of the visiting team is of a contrasting color.
3. If on the kickoff at the start of each half, the visiting team wears a colored jersey in violation of the conditions specified in Rule 1-4-3-a-2 (above), it is a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.
PENALTY: Administer as a dead-ball foul. 15 yards at the succeeding spot following the kickoff. If the kickoff is returned for a touchdown, the penalty is assessed either on the try or on the succeeding kickoff, at the option of the home team. [S27]

RATIONALE: Creates a process to allow the visiting team to wear colored jerseys when the home team also wears colored jerseys.

The rule

I was quoting was the previous penalty before this new rule change. Last year if a team wore their colors to an away game they were penalized a Time Out per half (see above linked article). Obviously the penalty for breaking the revision of the rule is the 15 yards. The way I worded my first comment I was incorrect. (though the last penalty i had heard about was the time out haha… didnt read the new penalty, just the new revision for allowing teams to let visitors wear colors).

We have ugly uniforms. Cool helmet. The rest? Ehh…not a big fan. I prefer the more minimalist look. Not a Penn State or Alabama minimalist, but maybe like a Washington or Auburn. Kinda cool without looking like a monochromatic popsicle.

But I could really care less what they wear if they win.

Ok the last word on Rules

According to the Big 12 See http://www.big12sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10410&KEY=&ATCLID=1514844 which is the link to the hand book. You will need to have access to the Big 12 Administrative handbook. I have one from 2007.

According to the handbook in sections 11 and 12 the teams are required to adhere to the NCAA rule unless both teams have agreed before hand and then have it approved by the Big 12 oversight board.

Penalty for violating Conference rule is more than just a flag in the game. It can cause severe financial pentalties and forfetting of the game. The Head coach can also be fined and the school can be penalized in number of scholorships.

So the rule in the Big 12, is basically the NCAA common rule. No team will be willing to let another team wear its home colors as a visiting team. Oklahoma is the only team to make the request of Texas for the Red River shootout and Texas who was the home team in 2005. Texas refused. Oklahoma appealed and was denied.

A side note: Prior to 1982, there was no offical rule about color of jersey and no penalty. It was common courtesy for away teams to wear white. This was to prevent teams with same or simular colors from taking the field. In 1982, a team who failed to wear the white could lose the game regardless of the outcome of the game. Thus the USC v UCLA issue. UCLA wanted to enforce a loss on USC for not wearing white. The NCAA rule was at the start of each series the team not wearing white could be penalized 15 yards. Thus the rule change was to protect USC as they lobbied hard to prevent the loss and to have the rule change.

We could make this part of a more holistic approach to victory:

Next on the agenda: teaching Brandon Carter how to use primal screams to intimidate opponents and unleashing Colby Whitlock’s latent psychic ability to strike the other team’s skill position players dead just by thinking about it really hard.
