Expectations vs Performance
This is only w.r.t. the two toughest teams in our conf: UT and OU.
2002 - We beat Texas and now the game @ OU is huge. If we win, we win the big 12 south outright for the first time! High expectations. Result @ OU: 15-60 L
2003 - No expectations since the game is at Austin. Result @ UT: 40-43 L
2004 - No expectations again since the game is at Norman and OU is undefeated. Result @ OU: 13-28 L
2005 - Tech is undefeated and top 10 ranked. High expectations. Result @ UT: 17-52 L
2006 - Tech has lost 4 games already. No expectations. Result @ OU: 24-34 L
2007 - UT is ranked 7th and game is at Austin. Again, no expectations. Result @ UT: 43-59 L (wud've been closer if not for the cheat-fest)
2008 - Tech has one of the best seasons in school history. School record-breaking #2 ranking. This games wins the south outright. High expectations. Result @ OU: 21-65 L
So guys, what do you think? Our guys don't show up for away games against UT and OU when expectations are high. Otherwise they do. They don't win but they keep it fairly close. This Sat the expectations aren't exactly high. Do you think we have a chance?
***UPDATE***
2009 - Tech has a new starting QB whose first road game is in front of the largest crowd in the state of Texas against a #2 team. Tech travels to Austin leaving behind 3 out of their 4 DEs and 1 starting SS. No expectations. Result @ UT: 24-34 L
In 2011, I'm gonna be writing a 'W' here I'm sure. Guns up!

in honor of Hank Hill.. yep .. we do have chance..
Its punchers chance. Mainly because IMO the ut players may be too tight. It’s a long season to be up for the national championship run on every single outing. Let’s see the ut advantages are: Rowdy crowd, viciously accoutered band, smart enemy coaches, fast guys (at least at getting away from accident scenes) okay they are really fast, darn sure looks like a brawl to me. Still you never know..

Hell yeah we have a chance!!
Not to quote Leach but, “if everybody does their job.” It is highly possible for us to win in Austin. I don’t think it’s that far fetched for us to come away with a “W”

Come on now
Through the years the David vs Goliath mindset of us Techsters has driven me crazy. We think maybe we can…….maybe we can……! To be a top program you reload not rebuild. After last year we all had our chests puffed out, but by and large we are in the chicken little stage again. If you are a big boy you play with the big boys. Crap on this punchers chance stuff. Thats for big time losers! I believe we have an outstanding team and outstanding athletes. Quit this chicken little mentality and expect to go anywhere against anyone and win. Thats what the big boys……..and their fans do. Expect excellence and don;t accept anything less from us or the team.
Wish it were that easy
Fans develop that mentality when their teams seldom get blown out. Not that UT and OU don’t lose but they go down fighting when they lose.
Last year I had the utmost faith in my Red Raiders and the result of that night was utter depression and sleeplessness. I felt violated.
Maybe when our team stops having blowout losses consistently (at least 1) every year, then I’ll stop with the David vs. Goliath mentality. Then I’ll stop storming the field.
A W this weekend would be a nice start. If you’re elite, go out there and prove you’re elite.
+1 for the
I felt violated
That a good way to describe last years game.
I have mixed feelings this year. I am trying to be optimistic and level headed at the same time but it is hard, like everyone on this board knows, we has some great players and we know this team has “reloaded” <— tired of hearing that> I expect this team to win, a close game just isn’t good enough for me.

What a bunch of mamby-pambys......
Oh…I’ll be a loyal Red Raider fan when they win every game , every year. Right. By God, I’ll NEVER give my Red Raiders ANYTHING but 100% support. Period. Not just when it’s the convenient or trendy thing to do. We play ut this week, SO EFFEN WHAT!!! Bring ‘em on. There’s not a shadow of doubt in my mind that we can and will beat them. But you know what, we may get slapped, it happens, it’s part of the game, but I DON’T GIVE A RIP!!! I will ALWAYS firmly believe that we can AND will win any and all games.
Reading some of the comments here, I think that you’d have the Captain telling the team…“well fellas, I just don’t know if we can beat ut. They’re soooo good. And they’re soooo big and fast. And they’re all better athletes than y’all are. We just don’t have much of a chance.” Well let me give you a little news flash, he ain’t do nothin’ but buildin’ those kids up into a lather. He’s tellin’ em just what eddy said, you wanna be one of the big boys you gotta play with the big boys…..No doubt in my mind that my Red Raiders won’t take care of business Saturday in Austin. I can’t and won’t allow myself to believe anything else. Period.

No dude.. u misunderstood
I’m in fact trying to say the OPPOSITE that we DO actually have a chance here.
Did you not get my main post or what? I’m saying based on the pattern, we have a very good chance of showing up and this time instead of keeping it close and losing, we might actually win it.
I’m just saying that last years debacle at OU broke a million Red Raider hearts and that the players should show up and play to their potential instead of producing lop-sided scores like 65-21. Even the Sooners know that the difference between last years TTU team and their team wasn’t 65-21.
I misunderstood????????
When you still say…..
we have a very good chance of showing up and this time instead of keeping it close and losingu misunderstood.
We WILL show up and we WILL win. Accept nothing less.
And, this is not directed at any one person, seems that most every comment I see has a “golly-gee-I-hope-we-don’t-embarrassed” outlook".

DUDE...
What in my post makes you think I don’t always expect a win and not always wanting a win?
I expect this team to win, a close game just isn’t good enough for me.
I was saying i want/expect a win… All of those people out there that want us to keep it close annoy me. I expect us to win every game. We have the players to play on any field and win any game. And I expect that.

I HOPE WE WIN
That’s about as far as I can hope. Last year it was very easy to believe we would win..this year?….we’ll see.
WIN
I look for a win because the team has made positive strides in some important areas. The DL and LB spots are seemingly playing better than prior seasons, albeit against lesser opponents than we face this weekend and for the remainder of our schedule. continues to make good reads, the offense will be fine. He must however start including the RBs in the natural flow of the game to the tune of between 22 and 30 carries/ 30-35 touches. Their success will determine Tech’s fate. If the RBs are overlooked by Potts, Tech will no doubt lose, possible real badly. So, include the RBs in the scheme as much as possible and a win is definitely there for the taking. Hopefully, a trend was started in the UT game last year, in that we can pull out a win when the chips are down and not fold up as in years past.

come on now pt. deux
come on now….you guys are driving me crazy with all this “loser” talk of “I hope we have a chance”…….I hope we don’t get beat real bad". This is what you live for…..the big game….the bright spotlight!!!! Do you go through your life hoping that you get the job done? If you do you get your butt whipped! I guarantee there is not a player on either team Saturday night that dosen’t think they are gonna kick butt. Not one player that “hopes they keep it close” or" hope they don’t get embarrassed’." This is what the winners live for. Sack up and wish we could play on the big stage every game. Don’t lay awake wishing and hoping. Expect to win! Get on board or get the hell off the wagon!
Okay eddyc555 the hell with the losers!
Now that’s what I’m talking about. Get in there kick some butt and take names. We need more fired up folks like you eddyc555. Good job bro full speed ahead. Run out the guns and hoist the jolly roger! Drill texas u, them and the cow they rode in on. ARRRRRRGH!

Raiders can always win...
it just comes down to execution. If Potts can keep form making mental mistakes and the receivers catch footballs we are in this game. The defense has to do their part but I think it’s going to be more about scoring points on as many possessions as possible. I still say special teams will be a huge factor in this game and I feel good about what we have going for us at this point.
Yes, sir... agreed
Keep it clean, no silly penalties, no dropping easy catches (Eddy Britton), no turnovers.
No fancy plays needed…. the above alone is enough to bring down the “mighty” horns. I have that much faith in my team.
I would LOVE to just assume we’ll win every game. But I’m not on the team and can’t influence anything regarding the outcome.
Do I THINK we can win? Yes. Will we win? I can’t say yes or no with any conviction. All we have to go on is past history. Odds are we will lose. That doesn’t make me less of a fan, just someone who sees this for what it is. A win would be considered a huge upset given all the rankings and such.
I just expect them (EXPECT) to go down there and play with passion on every play. I expect every player to execute with excellence every down. If that happens, we have a phenomenal shot at winning.
Just sayin
Past years performance can’t be a predictor of this year’s outcome. Players are different, coaches are different, so past performance doesn’t apply. I say the first two games this year are not predictors of how this game will go. Tech’s defense gave up the short pass in the first two games in a bend and don’t break philosophy and we all know this can’t happen this weekend or Texas will run Tech ragged. But why would anyone suppose Ruff wouldn’t be aware of this? Tech has the players, coaches to win in Austin this year! Even Mack Brown is saying Tech’s defense is better and I don’t think that is BS. I said so early this season and I say it again: This team is just as good as last year and I’m waiting to see if they win as many games as last year. This is Tech’s year to win in Austin! Wreck’em Tech!
Not Sure
This will be the first season ever that we have had higher quality players and playing in UT. TTU Star average in 2002 2.2 Average Star in 2008 2.7 Average for this year 2009 2.9 .
The quality of the players has improved dramatically. The issue with road games at OU and Texas is one of coaching and team leadership. Thus the problem is not the players but how they are led and prepared for those games.
Just an aside...but Evenly Matched?
I heard someone say that last year Texas and Tech were “evenly matched”. WTF??? Evenly matched?! 4 and 5 star recruits and unlimited $$$ against 2, 3, and 4 star recruits and a tiny budget? Ain’t no way we were evenly matched. We’ve been outmanned by Texas every year; the fact that we are coming close most games is astonishing given the disadvantages we have. I’ll say it again, MORE with LESS. Should we win? No. Can we? ABSOLUTELY.
“I deeply hope we beat their ass today.” – Bob Knight, November 1, 2008
I'm a huge Leach fan, but. . .
These examples, and particularly last year’s game against OU, point to my one major criticism of Leach. Despite his innovative approach to the game of football, despite some of the incredible wins we’ve pulled out over the years, deep in the bottom of my gut there’s a part of me which wonders how hard Leach actually works to prepare his team for the big games.
When opposing teams have time to prepare (even the marginal teams like Minnesota in the 2006 Sun Bowl), they seem to have an ability to solve the Tech offense.
I often get the feeling that Leach is a little over-reliant on the system.
I’ll never forget the look in the eyes of Harrell and Offensive Line last year when OU absolutely obliterated every scheme the Raiders tried to pull off. That game was the ultimate case of the ’’emporer has no clothes." The Raiders were brimming with confidence heading into that game. There is absolutely no way to argue that the players came out flat (a game for all the marbles? on national TV?). Losing a game is one thing, but to see an outcome like that, you just have to wonder how badly Leach was outcoached or how little he did to prepare.
The defensive schemes were useless. Ruffin’s theory is that simpler defensive schemes enable players to be more instinctive when they play. If you share Ruffin’s belief, then you must also accept the idea that Tech’s defensive players, unlike all the other defensive players in the country, are uniquely incapable of executing complex schemes. The only instincts the Red Raiders displayed were the ability to miss tackles, to get blown off the line and to allow receivers to catch the ball with no one within 10 yards.
Stoops is on record for saying that these sorts of base defenses are precisely the ones that he relishes playing against, because such schemes are utterly unsuited for stopping a dynamic spread offense. Given the fact that Tech’s offense is one of the best in the country for precisely the same reasons, as Stoops points out, you would think Ruffin would by now have reconsidered this now repeatedly discredited theory.
Last year, the OU defense almost seemed to know what plays (or more likely, what tendencies) Tech was likely to call on almost every down in the first half by which time the game was all but over. Despite the notion that Tech’s QBs and receivers in theory can run an infinite number of routes or patterns on any one play, the reality is that players are human beings who are vulnerable of falling into particular patterns. I have no doubt that one could watch all of Harrell’s game films and detect precisely what he is likely to do in certain situations, despite his freedom to make other decisions.
The key is to manipulate the offense into playing into those situation, and be prepared to pounce when the QB or receiver acts as predicted.
I hope last year was a huge wake up call for Leach and that he has learned not to be complacent about the effectiveness of his offense. His schemes are good, but the great coaches, particularly those blessed with phenomenal talent like OU, UT etc, aren’t imbeciles. Watch enough tape, figure out a couple of wrinkles and more athletic teams are able solve our offensive pretty effectively (OU, UT, Ole Miss, Alabama, Virginia, TCU, Missouri are all cases in point).
I love Leach’s tendency to gamble on Fourth Down, but in these big games he seems to get reckless (i.e. deep in his own territory, etc). The risk/reward for pulling stunts like that is so high, you can’t help but wonder how many of those 65 points against OU were of Leach’s own making. If the Minnesota experience showed us anything, it was the belief that no matter how bad things got, Tech had the ability to rebound almost instantly.
Given that the team has justifiably earned the right to that mystique over the years, why go for broke in the first half against OU in the manner that he did? He went 0-2 on 4th down in the second quarter. The first time, the team was in the red zone at the 15 yard line, close enough for a 32 field goal which even our guys can make. Had we made the kick, at that point down 14-0, we could have been 14-3, given our team a chance to regroup, and slightly settle the rabid energy of the OU teams and fans, not to mention give our team a bit of confidence.
Instead OU drove down the field, and scored on the ensuing drive. You might argue that Leach was right in going for it. It was only 4th and 3 afterall. But to me there is magnitude of difference between potentially missing a field goal and turning it over on downs – particularly in that environment, and considering how spooked the entire team clearly appeared to be. I think in this instance that Leach demonstrated poor judgement.
The next 4th down play was infinitely more ludicrous. With OU up just 21-0, we get the ball on our 45 yard line, and after just three plays on the 50 yard line, Leach decides to go for it on 4th and 4. Let’s look at the trade offs in this scenario. Get the first down and sustain a drive from the 50 yard line. Punt the ball to pin OU deep in their territory. Miss the Fourth and Four and give OU’s potent offense to score against TTU’s clearly staggered defense. It may be ‘cool’ to be a gambler, but that was a completely dumbfounding decision. Either that, our Leach’s call demonstrated how little confidence he actually had in the defense. OU would then take the ball and score again in 4 plays, now up 28-0 (just four scores). Tech’s offense would regroup to score a touchdown to make it 28-7. OU would subsequently march down against Tech’s completely impotent defense (to use the phrase ‘scared shitless’ would probably be a more accurate description).
Tech’s next possession results in a Graham Harrell INT, which OU capitalizes on to make the score 42-7 at the half. An awful performance.
How many of those points do we attribute to going for it on fourth down? One touchdown for sure. Maybe two.
Harrell’s INT? Certainly another.
And the defense? Utterly unprepared. Of OU’s 47 first half plays, 15 went for 10 yards or more (including 2 plays over 30 yards). How bad was our first half performance? We didn’t even pull that kind of performance off against North Dakota. OU scored on 6 touchdowns on 7 offensive possessions.
Leach’s lack of discipline is the equivalent of Kobe Bryant saying, “my team might be down by 20 in the second quarter, and everyone knows that I could go off for 30 in the 4th quarter to erase almost any conceivable deficit and win, but screw it, Í’ll just start jacking up shots from half court now and see what happens.” Leach didn’t give his team a chance to win, and that’s what upset me so much after that game. As a result of the OU demolition, Tech seemed to be almost a different team for the remaining two games of the season. Something got left behind on the field that day.
I hope Leach will work harder to mix it up more and work harder to outsmart the other really smart guys. I hope he and his staff have learned from last year. I hope Ruffin is in the process of executing some master plan which to date has not yet been revealed.
To me the textbook game to understaning how to shut down the Tech offense remains either the 3-12 TCU loss in 2006 or the 10-13 Alabama loss in the 2006 Cotton Bowl. You might add OU to the list. Believe me when I say that everyone of Tech’s opponents will have watch those game films hundreds of time – you can include Muschamp and Brown to the list and don’t for a second think the UH coaches aren’t doing the same thing.
Leach and Ruffin had better be ready. The next two weeks defines our season.

Great work LondonRaider
You have got to believe that coaches are learning individuals who occasionally look at how they are perceived. I think you are correct on the ‘tendency" research results in a method to thwart how the team does its routine business. I believe a game of this magnitude warrants a plan which will incorporate a few shifts in the way the defense and offense disguises what they are attempting to do. Every outing has an opportunity. In my mind that opportunity is the relative lack of cohesiveness of our opponents units. Offense, defense and special teams. We of course are just as green. So I’m trying to say is it sort of evens out the contest. Makes the so called more talented individual vulnerable to the steady performer. Example is the Wyoming defense playing pretty much lights out in the first half of ut’s last game.
Will we change the pitch? Uknown. But this construct of a game should allow the most proficient executor to rise to the top. Guess you could go back the dedfischer observation when we are being shut down start running the ball, force the opponent to play technique. This then supports a return to the norm of the offense. The short passing game. As far as the defense pretty encouraged by the LB’s blitz’s so far. The match ups on the TTU DL vs. the ut O line are better than I have seen them in the last 5 years. Can’t wait.

I agree with most everything you said about preparation and game planning by the coaching staff. But I tend to disagree that there’s ‘absolutely no way to argue that the players came out flat’. ‘Should have’ and ‘did’ are two entirely different concepts.
My most dominant memory of that game is an OU ball carrier making a cut and three Tech defenders fall backwards on their butt without being touched. It’s hard to pin that on a game plan.
You are half right and half kinda lost in the stats
The Problem for Texas Tech for many years under Leach was that Leach did not give a damn about Defense and did not allow for heavy recruiting and efforts toward that side of the Ball.
Case in point. Auston English who was a top player for Oklahoma. Auston English grew up wanting to play for TTU. Did a visit on his own here at TTU and was ignored. Auston English grew up here in West Texas at Canadian. Simply, TTU could have signed him if they would have had any real effort at that time. Which is one of the reasons I wanted DC Setencich gone 2 seasons before he actually got fired. Lyle never visited players or went out to talk to parents or players.
Ruffin has changed that. We now have better quality players on Defense. I project that in the next 2 years we will see a step up the rung as the newer level of defensive recruits start hitting the field. we are seeing some of that now with players coming in and playing right away as Freshman which speaks to the rise in quality of players coming in.
This only improves the overall quality of the team because the older kids have to work harder to keep their positions.
Thus I have to object to the blanket statement. However, I think Leach has finally had the light bulb go off in this head that there is two sides of the ball and that the offense can not just simply out score everyone defense be damned. I refer to the 2001 statement. I wish I had kept that link.
But Texas Tech is playing better Defense now than they did in 2005 and I will say it. They are playing better than 2007 as far as Defensive linemen are concerned and shutting down the run. Texas Rushed in 2007 308yards. Which killed Tech. But the game was close at half time. Fast forward to 2008, 80 yards of rushing for Texas.
That is really the key to beating Texas. McCoy can not win with his arm. McCoy has to have a successful running game. But that still does not mean that he is not dangerous if our Safeties get burned deep which has been a major problem for years and years. Last year no exception.
This year, I have yet to see the Safeties get burned deep. They have not allowed anyone to simply run past them and be 10 to 15 yards wide open for the easy TD which was the problem with safeties at Tech for years and years. So talent is better.
If Tech can shut down the rush and the safeties do not get burned deep like they were 4 times in the Texas game last year, then the game can be won!

For those of you on the board right now (10:45 am Thur 10/17) Norm is gonna talk about the game prob after 11:00.
Wish I could have heard that today...
anything positive said on his behalf about Tech? Was it a UT love fest?
He was (always is) objective
Said they can’t look past us, we’re a quality program with 37 wins over last 4 seasons, said last year was no fluke, Tech whipped ’em, out gained them 105 to 80? on ground, had like 200 more yards that UT in overall offense, of course UT should be favored, but they better worry about us.
I think the game will be closer than most think...
But I have to ask what was the “cheatfest?” I don’t recall the refs having a big impact on that game, and it really wasn’t a close game, despite what Leach said afterwards.
Aside from the nearly irrelevant fact that the head ref at that game was/is a UT grad..key word irrelevant
Leach pea’d on everyone’s leg about the timing of the call. So called bad reffing outing. Played out like this Raider E. Britton catches TD. Review shows he dropped it. Points rightly removed. G. Harrell throws another strike to Amendola 2nd TD on the drive, but Tech is holding on the play – during the throw in Leaches view after the throw – a UT d linemen drills Harrell. Result Points removed. Push back the Raiders. Tech goes on to try a 4th down attempt comes away empty handed. Head ref was standing next to Harrell during the hit so Leach rants to reporters. Gets fined by the Big 12. He ends up handing out hams to needy families. To quote M. Python " …always look on the bright side of life…"

The really issue of the so called cheatfest
Ball spotting and lots of no calls that should have been called. The Harrell getting drilled 3 seconds after he threw a pass and had even started to move up the field is an example.
It was made worse after the game when the Ref went to a UT booster after game party and that is when the crap hit the fan!
The Ref should not have been calling the game if he is going to show school attachment as he did with UT. It puts everything that happened at the game into question good or bad.
Simply there was a lot of no calls in Austin that day and it looked like the Refs were in the tank when you have them showing up at a UT booster after game party.
More.. yes.. then there was the 07 urban legend of..
The UT assistant coaches in the booth high fiving the replay official. The word to consider is legend.. Leach and the Big 12 deputy commissioner for officials?? had a midnight blow out yelling match at the Big 12 Coaches conference about ref selection and discipline. All that after he handed out his hams to the needy. All free speech must be appropriately rewarded

Actually their was a video of that happening after a UT TD on the network and lots of people saw it.
But when people asked for that copy, it suddenly was not found anymore. There was an official protest by the TTU observer about that to the Big 12 Conference and to the NCAA and officiating oversight committee. It did happen.
