Stats are proving what we already know
Defense is dramatically better!!! Its improving and I love the fact that no one not even Texas has any player to hang 100 yards rushing. Thus I love it and want more of it!!
Offense there is two things that jump right out at me. 1st. Rushing is sucking big time. This is the worst effort since Leach has been here at Tech. 2009 is proving to be the worst rushing team ever at TTU in its history! Number of average rushes is down typically for a Leach era team. but only by 5 to 8 rushes on average So its not that much different right now in number of attempts. Lowest every game was 17 rushes in a game for a Leach era team. So its something to be extremely concerned about!
The yards per rush is horrid and is the worst ever. Something has to change as this can not continue if we demand a top 10 performing team year in and year out. Its also has to be addressed if we ever want to see a National Championship game much less a Conference title. 1.7 yards a carry will not get Tech into San Antonio.
The other item is scoring. Tech simply is not scoring when they get the ball. Especially in the first half and it shows dramatically that Tech is sagging in the 2nd quarter. That is a team leadership and focus issue more than anything else. Thus lack of an offensive team leader is showing up in the stats.
Potts is showing typical Leach era effort in number of passes and yards passing. However, there is an obvious slump in Rushing. Leach offense has the running check down which Potts does not utilize as much as he could. But on the whole, what I am seeing is inexperience as the tools and effort at his position is there equal to any of the previous seasons as far as passing is concerned.
Thus after 3 games, I have to say that the Tech coaches need to address offensive attitude, focus and team leadership now as it is lacking. This is not bad in the big picture! Its actually a good thing in the bigger picture because the offense and Potts can only improve over time! Look out for the rest of the season. If Tech goes 11-1 and ties again for the South title, then there is no reason why Tech can not have the perfect season in 2010 as Tech will be the team with all the good returning starters and it will be a young team other than at QB.

Great information here...
I do agree that we can all see that our defense is better on the field but maybe not at first glance. By this I mean we lost some really good talent if you look at then and now. I feel like our defense is making it happen as a team now and Ruffin is becoming a better coach. He sort of reminds me of Leach but with defensive strategy instead. Potts will be all of what we expect of him. The kid is crazy tough and has that winning zeal that Harrell had. I hate to speculate but I see Tech shaking things up this season quite a bit. Lastly,
our 2010 team will be dangerous and will be capable of beating all the south powers.

We are seeing
a Decline in offensive points and passing yards per play and total yards per game.
The one thing that I will start next week will be special teams and turnovers. Since Special teams seems to be having more of an effect with this year than normal. So I will compile special teams plays over the last 4 years.
But the numbers are no bad statistically. But they are showing something which we are seeing played out on Saturday. We are just not getting enough yards per play which Leach has stated is one of his most important stats that he himself looks at along with number of plays we have verses opponents. Houstons 94 offensive plays was shocking to say the least and will give them many victory if they are able to continue that trend. But Tech had 74. Which is still 20 above the college standard average of 58 plays a game.
The stats are telling the story. 2009 looks more and more like the 2006 year team.
