Five Initial Thoughts

One :: Getting in the Backfield: Perhaps this is a signal that the offensive line will have a little bit of a rest as Houston is 92nd in the nation in sacks and 106th in the nation in tackles for loss. Not that Taylor Potts could use an off day, but perhaps he could have a day without as much pressure as last week.

Two :: Keenum is Ridiculously Efficient: Yards per attempt is the end-all in terms of quarterback efficiency, but it's not a bad indicator of how well your quarterback is performing. After 2 games, Case Keenum is averaging 9.5 yards for every passing attempt. For those of you keeping records of that sort of thing, that's pretty good.

Three :: Turnover Margin: Thus far, Houston is 2nd in the nation in turnover margin. I didn't get to watch the Houston vs. Oklahoma St. game but that was a game where OSU lost it because they turned the ball over 4 times to Houston's 2.

Four :: Another Team to Run Against: I guess I get to keep repeating myself, but Houston has an absolutely abysmal rushing defense. To the tune of 175.50 yards a game. I know, you're saying that one of those games was OSU, but Northwestern St. did gain about 180 yards on the ground in the first game (excluding a few sacks by the QB).

Five :: Average Defensively: Houston is just about dead-center in terms of total defense, 66th in the nation. They aren't awful, but they're not good either. I've already mentioned the rushing defense being fairly porous, but the passing defense hasn't truly seen a passing team. I'm tempted to say that the Cougars will be susceptible defensively, whether it be in the air or on the ground, assuming Texas Tech can figure out how to run the ball.

Nice write up. I am excited for this game, and I hope our rush offense gets going again. While it wasn’t as affective against UT I think it can help us out in the rest of our games.

posted a fanshot of their win over OSU

1) Their defense is undersized but opportunistic. Probably won’t hold Potts & Co. to below 30 points, but could take advantage of a turnover or two at an inconvenient time.
2) Houston’s offense kind of looks like what Oklahoma’s offense has been the last few years and was advertised to be this year: Extremely efficient combination of run & pass that will quickly light a soft zone defense ablaze. Keenum is a crazy good passer in this system and can scramble for a 1st down if no one’s open.
3) Houston’s special teams could be vulnerable to some big returns by Stephens, or maybe Dez Bryant is just really that good (and he probably is).
4) Oklahoma State didn’t lie down for Houston, they just couldn’t keep pace in a shootout and had most of the toss-up plays that could have gone either way go against them. If Tech isn’t careful, Houston could wipe a promising season out for us too.

I agree, with your post. I think Leach and Co. will be making that a huge point this week. Some guys on a Houston sports radio show this morning were talking about how much pressure Tech got on UT and compared it to them getting pressure on U of H. I think this will be a big key for our defense on Sat. If we can get to Keenum and get some hits on him we should be able to win this game big.

MY OPINION

I think Texas is way over-rated, [ probably not even top 10] ,and Houston would have beat them, if they played anything like they did against OSU. Ex Tech off coor Dana Holgerson—sp- knows Techs off. like the back of his hand, and has had 2wks to prepare. He has taken Leach;s off. and added a great running game to compliment their passing.[ take notes Leach] I think Hou. off. is better than Tech at this stage, and a hell of lot better than Texas. Techs defense and offense will have to play as good or better than they did in Austin to win. I think this is most important game of the Season for Tech. Two losses this early would really suc#### . Good luck and Wreck em, I think we will need it.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a coach in this region

who doesn’t know Mike Leach’s offense. Shit ain’t complicated, the man says so himself.

by mojavereject on Sep 21, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and conversely...

Texas Tech’s defense should be well aquainted with most of Dana’s offense. This is a good game for Tech, but they are all important. The thing is, the game is probably a bigger deal for U of H, much like the UTEP vs. TTU game of a couple of years ago – which was the biggest game of the year for El Paso. I want Tech to win in the worst way, but I don’t think it makes or breaks the season. Good teams take valuable lessons away from every game regardless of the results. The loss at UT was extremely valuable on so many levels.

If I had a choice of a hard-fought loss to U of H paired with going the rest of the way undefeated in Big 12 play, and a hard-fought win over U of H and losing two or more Big 12 games this season, I’d choose the former. I know its old fashioned, but “non-conference” games used to be designed to “get you ready” for what really mattered. Now its all about B * S polls and such.

I’m excited to see Tech compete against a team like U of H. By the way – just have to say it – on Saturday it will be two Abilene boys at QB fighting it out! Good football in the Big Country.

Honestly

I live in Houston now, and have never seen a team that hypes themselves as much as the coogs. Its no stretch here that they are talking about wanting to crash the BCS this year…. Gimme a break.

They are notorious for this though, they get a big surprise win and let it get to their heads, and they have had 2 weeks to sit and think about how great they are. Ya, they did beat the most over-rated team in College Football this year, but we aren’t OSU.

Houston is the type of team that emplodes as soon as they are faced with adversity… the other week they played with a lead the whole game…. its easy to kinda sit on that and not worry too much… but when Tech starts trading blows with them they will do the same thing every other UH team has done… FOLD, then get personal foul penalties, then fight.

by Vassago77379 on Sep 21, 2009 2:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You hit it right on the head. The best way to beat U of H is to hit them in the mouth. They won’t want anymore after that. Our defense is way better than OSU even without 2 DEs. Yes Dana knows Leach’s offense, but Leach also knows Dana’s tendencies. Tech just needs to get physical up front and put pressure on Keenum. He hasn’t seen a defense that is as good as Tech’s yet.

I sure hope that Leach has changed all of the hand signals and audible names since Dana left ;)

Also, I hope that Tech stays in communication with Dana. If Leach ever does leave us, I would like to grab him.

Generally

All top coaches change them every year. Because there is too much film compiled to learn what the signals are. Especially when you play a program like Texas who spends more money on things like that than 50% of the total sports programs of other schools. After all, Texas spent more money on Tutoring for their football players than Tech spent for its mens basketball budget. Its a crying shame that Texas and Texas A&M have such flow of money as state schools and the other state schools like Tech have to scrape and bleed for what they can get.

by Pablo M on Sep 22, 2009 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

if you want more money for your athletic department

your fans need to sell out games and donate more.

It has nothing to do with being a public school, it has to do with more tickets sold, more donations, and more revenue coming in.

But

When you get free state money from the State Educational slush fund, then it make a big difference!

Texas A&M only survives by the Slush fund in reality right now.

Sorry

It just ticks me off when I hear that same ole same ole. Its like they are stuck in the past when Tech had games which 35,000 was the norm in the mid 1980s.

Its time that people wake up! Tech does sell out games. geesh!

by Pablo M on Sep 24, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Make or break

Tech MUST take this game very seriously, regardless of how good or bad UofH really is. They have been known to whip Tech at inopportune times (re: 1976). If Techis as good as we all hope they are after standing toe-to-toe with UT, then they can win this game fairly easily. By that, I mean that by playing hard, with purpose, they can obtain and stretch a lead in the game. But, as said before, they had best take this UofH team seriously from the start.

Tech will win big this weekend

I see my raiders hanging 24 on them. Tech isn’t going to go soft after the UT game. That might have been true if we beat UT but look for an impressive win Saturday night. This time next Monday Tech will be ranked AP 23.

I hope you mean...

Tech hangs 48 on them, ’cause I think U of H gets about 24 themselves!

correction...

I meant 24 above what they score on Tech.

My wife and I are looking for a baby

SHE wants to have one of our own, but I’d be happy to take one that’s already housebroken and in school so I don’t have to pay for daycare. :)

I’m pretty scared about this game, too. More than most games down the road. OTOH and not to minimize the risks, UH did get awfully lucky in their win over OSU. They let the Cowboys come storming back after an early lead and then won on an INT and a fluke tipped pass for TD.

We have a little payback to give these guys, too, although it’s before your time if your under 40-ish. I forget the exact years, but UH joined the SWC right after Arkansas defected. That was right about the time when UH started the then-revolutionary run-and-shoot offense. That was also at a time when Tech actually had a pretty good chance of getting a SWC crown. But UH came in and kicked everybody’s butt with that offense (and the key personnel to run it). For a few years they were the terror of college football and even got a Heisman out of the deal. But then things kind of fizzled, the SWC broke up, and we haven’t heard from then since.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Home Field?

There will be a substantial contingent of Texas Tech fans at the game Saturday simply because so many alums live in Houston. I’d expect a lot of RAIDER POWER this Saturday. Compared to the Texas game, the environment is going to be a LOT friendlier.

I agree that OSU was overranked and hyped at the beginning of this season and had no business being in the top 10. This TTU team is fighting to get any respect (…again…) and the guys will come into town hungry this week.

If we play like we did in Austin this week there’s no way they can beat us.

by merrik on Sep 21, 2009 6:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Remember OK State, 2008

They lost to Texas in Austin by 4, then proceeded to loose 3 of their next 5.

There’s still work to be done.

by natkcole on Sep 21, 2009 6:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I second that

We better be careful.

So far our D hasn’t given up a single TD in the 1st half and that includes the game against UT. But that could change very soon if we are careless.

by Red_Raider on Sep 21, 2009 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I was thinking about that. OSU beat a pretty good mizzou team and then went to Austin and nearly pulled out the shocker. Then a little while later we all remember what happened when they came to Lubbock. OSU has always been tremendously inconsistent, though, playing ut tough but then blowing it somehow.

Tech is getting better at staying consistent, but we do have some inexperienced guys who still need a lot of work, i.e. dumb penalties. Thits will be a good test to see if we’re overcoming that kind of thing. It is just another step to becoming an elite and respected team.

by pcrawttu on Sep 21, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

luckily for this team

they wouldn’t have to play Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree even if they were still in the league.

but we have Potts - Leong - Swindall - Lewis - Zoo - Britton

that should scare this piss out of just about anybody……

U of H

Is a Team that is the preverbial snake in the grass. If you not careful you get bit. But the truth is that they are overrated. But if Tech does not respect them like a snake you will get bit.

OSU is extremely overrated and to be honest, I did not think they were as top 20 team coming into this season. Its just hype from all that money that has been flowing.
The problem is that they have not improved but are exactly where they were 5 years ago. An Average team that picks of a game against better talent to seem better than they are. They are an 7-5 8-4 with the occational 9-3 season. They are dangerous if you over look them.

Thus Tech just needs to go in and do the 70 points lights out of the 80/20 principle.
If you play to hang 70 points on every team then you can not let down during the game because it takes 4 quarters to actually put up 70 points in 1 hour of play. Football is 80 percent mental and 20 percent nasty big bad boy smash mouth attitude of knocking the snot out of everyone.
