Texas Tech 28 Houston 29 Post Game Thread
In what has been the ugliest performance in a long time, Tech drops a game they should have won. Absurd play calling in critical points of the game killed us. And we had the fans rush the field, which maybe means we were important.

*sigh*
Congratulations boys, if we lose more than one more game the rest of the way you’ve just validated all the Tech critics. And WHY does Leach seem to hate Baron Batch and go away from him when he’s doing well?!?
Potts is not our guy
Terrible. I like for a quarterback to have some confidence, but his confidence is false. His wind up is killing us, his back foot throws are killing us, his accuracy. Potts is killing us. Terrible. I wasn’t impressed after the Texas game, I’m not impressed now. As a season ticket holder, I’m pissed.
disagree
I dunno, I think Potts still needs some work, but this one is on the lines (O & D) if we could pass protect (and I STILL don’t know why we couldn’t) OR get pressure on Keenum (WTF?) then we win this game easily.
Potts
His wind up is a joke. He stares down receivers. His footwork is terrible. Did you see his hail mary at the end? He didn’t even set his feet to throw the bomb.
If he have that circular motion when he throws, he doesn’t fumble on the first possession. You’re right, our O-Line is bad. We gave up 600+ yds on defense as well. Unacceptable.
Just so every one understands. We just got beat by Houston.
Potts made his mistakes
But I don’t think it’s on him. The coaches made some very bad decisions this game.

Hate to say it.
Potts made 50% or more of the offensive play calls. By design, Leach calls a formation and Potts reads the defense and finalizes the offensive play. The problem is that Potts reads have been horrible! No game has his reads looked good. Texas game was the only game where Potts looked good only because he was on target with most of his passes. But couple bad reads with poor passing and you get what you saw tonight.
I understand that
But that’s something that I think would be easily correctable from the sideline. It’s not like Leach sits on his hands the whole game.

Batch
Why are we doing qb sneaks when we have Batch? It took four tries to get in the end zone on a qb sneak against Rice!!!! Why does he expect a qb sneak to work from a yard out? Also, it is embarrassing that Potts is as big as he is and can’t get a yard!! What is Leach doing?
??
Why does Leach not like to call good plays. Has this pirate theme and risk taker gone to his head. His play calling has gone mad. We can run the ball that why Tech won 11 games last year. Potts the UT game was over last week too many pats on the back I guess.
THIS GAME IS ON LEACH.
Hard to watch
We showed flashes, but we are so inconsistent. When we finally found something that worked (rushed for over 100yds in first half), we went away from it. Used up our time outs, had more stupid ass penalties. The D play fairly well considering they kept holding them out of the end zone early on. They were gassed late in the game which made the 4th down at the goal line a little suspect. However, if you are going to go for it…how about handing it off to the beast Batch? A lot of miss steps tonight.
Out the window
goes the “moral victory” from last week, along with any cred we gained from last season (if any). Wow. It’s clear the lines are an issue and Potts’ decisions are not up to par. He’s still got some learning to do.
Leach is on the hook too
for this one. A FG could have won this game for us, but we gave them the ball.
Take the points
Worse case scenario after we kick the field goal and go up by 8 is Houston drives down for a td and gets the two point conversion. Tech has the ball last.
I don’t get it.
tech scored 0 points in the 4th qtr
and lost by 1 …. simply dumbfounding
Nothing unexpected here
We’re not that good fellas. I’d love to say that we have a team that will prove the naysayers wrong, but this is typical Tech football. Play well against the big boys and play to level of our competition otherwise. Losing to UH was predictable. Inconsistent play and bad play calling……same ole kriptinite (sp?) for Tech. Next year is our year. Prepare your emotions accordingly.
Collective State of Mind
Some people may disagree with me, but I don’t think we have played with a killer instinct or any sense of urgency (prior to the final 2 minutes) since the Minnesota comeback. How many teams have we had on the ropes, only to allow them an opportunity to get back into the game? We were able to win many of these contests, but the bottom line is they were far closer games than they had to be.
I do not see the passion — in the players or the staff — that is required to win on a consistent basis. I appreciate Leach’s quirks and his sound bites, but I sometimes wish he was a bit more evangelical in motivating this team.
Losing from the sideline
Last week’s on-side kick. This week’s 4th & Goal. We all like Leach for some of his gutsy play calling, but it has progressed beyond ’gutsy" into the realm of “wreckless”. Someone will inevitably ask “What would everyone be saying if we scored on the 4th & Goal?” Answer: nothing, because it would have been a win either way. Instead, we gave away a game that we should have won.
In the ramp-up to the season, I read several interviews where our conditioning was supposed to be superior this season. Our D was absolutely gassed. Yes, it was humid but there is no reason for that many cramps. We have trainers, nutritionists, conditioning coaches, and control the players for 24 hours prior to the game.
Potts on the QB sneak
Stood up to run. Rather than lower head and get behind Carter. Because he stood up, there was no chance of any kind of push at contact. That is a Freshman High school mistake to say the least!
Leach
I don’t understand. RUN THE BALL!!! RUN IT! RUN THE BALL! WHY WON’T YOU RUN THE BALL? WE WOULD HAVE WON THE GAME IF YOU KEPT RUNNING THE BALL!!! WHY DO YOU REFUSE TO DO WHAT WORKS? WE NEED AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND A HEAD COACH! LEACH HAS TO STOP CALLING PLAYS!
hey man captain leach is the shit. he has brought texas tech with a much lower budget to rank against the most powerful teams in college football. his achievment as a raider coach is just… wow…. this is a bad game… leach is known nation wide for its amazing offense… another thing is we have a lost boy as a leader as a quarterback. but just wait to see scotty young next season… i think he is coming is as a true freshman quarterback. or even jacob karam which looks very solid as a quarterback.
when leach got hired we were winning only half of our games. look at how football has improved thanks to leach over the years. he has accomplished pretty amazing upsets over his years. we kicked aggies ass since leach we have humiliated nebraska en ksu on their homecomings. last year we took texas out of the championship race with an amazing upset and for the first time we were close to winning the conference. 2007 we took oklahoma from the championship and 2006 the best bowl ever. if you dont know look it up. the biggest comback IN HISOTRY! minnesota 39 to texas tech 7 on the second half. i trust on the captain. not on potts… not anymore
Leach Should Be Fired
I am so tired of the stupid play calling and total lack of discipline with the players. Kick a f’ing feild goal and we win. Tired of it

We shouldn't fire him
but maybe someone else who is less enamored with passing should call the plays when it is obvious that we need to run the ball.
The Tech offense
requires a QB to make calls on the line based on what the defense shows. Potts could not read the defense and has gotten worse in reading!!! I can not blame the O Line for 90% of the problems. Even the fumble was caused by a QB not stepping up and getting rid of the ball. Honestly, an Offensive linemen can only block for 4 to 6 seconds on average. Though we at Tech have gotten used to seeing 10 to 15 seconds. Potts has to read better and get rid of the ball much faster. He was late and off target all night.
This is a game lost by our QB because of poor performance, no leadership and lack of attitude of the offense players.
When is the offense going to find a leader who will step up and lead this team?
All I got to say, is this. If Potts has another game like this, he needs to be benched! He could not hit the broad side of a barn and his reading was the worst I have ever seen from any of previous Tech QBs…. This is a horrid game that equals the Oklahoma State effort of Last year!
Nuff Said
Thoughts on Potts
I was optimistic on Potts coming into this season and still hold SOME hope. My only reservation about Potts was based on my observation of his sideline behavior during games the past two years. In short, he took no active interest in the game. He was at the end of the player area joking around with some other players at the bottom of the depth chart. I always thought it was strange that the backup QB wasn’t two steps from Leach, wearing a headset, or otherwise doing something that would indicate he was one injury away from taking the wheel.
I’ve been looking forward to Potts taking the reins for the past two seasons. The idea of a Tech QB with superb arm strength and good height coupled with a strong cast of receivers sounded too good to be true . . . and perhaps it is.
I honestly
Hope Leach Benches Potts for the next game. He deserves it! He has not tried to be the team leader much less the offensive leader to motivate the offense. You never see him running up and down the sideline motivating the offense when they are off the field and you never see him getting on the phone after a bad series.
That is the difference between past QBs under Leach and Potts this season. I also took a skeptical look for this season hoping that experience would improve as the games improve for a good enough record of a 9-3 or better season. Then 2010 being lights out as we will have enough pieces to actually win the title next year with the experience this year. But Potts is not improving but has actually worse. That is tough to say after the effort he did with Texas. But even in the Texas Game, he made such horrible reads and mistakes that actually cost Tech the game.
Thus I do not think Tech would be any worse off to try out Peters or Doege at this point!
remember when Leach fired setencich because his O had scored 45 points and we still lost
since ruff’s D held an explosive team to 29 points and we still lost, does that mean he has to fire himself
Actually, The person who made 50% of the calls was
Potts. By design the Tech QB calls a play at the line of scrimage based on the reads he sees. But Potts reads where horrid all day. Even called runs into an obvious zone blitz several times. His reading is getting worse not better. So will Leach bench Potts? I doubt it. But hopefully, Leach might try out Peters or Doege for a half next week just to see what happens. Because honestly, I think either of them would have done better tonight!
I thought I was back to the late 90’s except I’m wayyyyy fatter now

Potts Interception
Let’s be honest here. The hands to the face call on Pott’s int. was a courtesy call.
It was called on #43
Hands to the face to the the tackle. At the end he grabed the face mask which drew the call. But lets be honest here.
It was Big 12 refs. They suck no matter who is on the field and are honestly the worst on the NCAA which is sad sad sad.
Bad Call
It still wasn’t a legitimate penalty in my opinion. The guy was going into his spin move and he hit our tackle in the face. I’m sure that happens on 75% of the plays. It wasn’t like he pushed the tackles helmet off.
I was subjective.
No worse than than the Houston TD that was dropped. Lets just face it. Big 12 Refs are not very good and have shown that year in and year out. I honestly think that the conference scrapes the bottom of the barrel every year and picks the worst of the worst to save some money. The truth is I have never seen any really good called games in the Big 12.
So I am not going to blame this game on the Refs because they suck so bad it was a non factor.
Receivers?
Were they ever open? I haven’t seen us run the ball this well in a long time. Shouldn’t have stopped.
As much as I hate to admit, Houston is a decent team. Yes we should have easily won given the way we were dominating toward the end of the first half. As for Potts, I can remember when everyone was calling for Harrell to be benched a few years back. This is a young, inexperience team and I have to believe we’ll learn from this and win some good games. With the exception of Nebraska away, the rest of the season is reasonably favorable for us.
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State is a tough road game. I don’t see us leaving Stillwater with a W.
One thing I noticed tonight is we never stretch the field anymore. Did we go for the deep ball any tonight?
Yes Receivers were
Wide Open especially on the left. But Potts does not like to throw that side very much. Potts reads right to left and most of the time he tries to force it to the second or third read when the 4th is wide open for a TD.
I noticed that too
He didn’t throw to the left at all.

I put this one on mike and ruffin. Leach tends to find what works, run it a few times then not run it again, only show it. That’s fine to show it, but you have to run it if it’s working.
I was most disappointed with the soft defense. We gave up a silly amout of third down conversions to keenum moving and dumping it off to following wide open receivers. Wide open.
Tthe refs helped, but they weren’t as bad in the 2nd half and they weren’t the reason why we lost.
Ugly game. Will post a writeup when I get home tomorrow.
I put this on lazy players
Our O line are a group of pussies. They can’t push it in from the 1 foot line? Really? Our front 4 had zero pass rush. What defense? I’m saying it again this year. If these quitters keep playing like this, we’ll lose 4 more games at least.
Potts is not going to have it,like it or not, and yes, this is going to be a long season for all of us. We will be lucky to go 4-4 in conferece play. The defense is not that bad,its the offense thats been putting them ,and the rest of the team in damn near impossible situations. Leach thoroughly screwed the goose in this game.
This game was such an emotional beatdown. To think that we have already lost the same amount of games as we lost all of last year is depressing. This is the kind of performance that makes me just want to fast foward to next season and not watch anymore games this season. Right now this game is ruining the entire season for me. I really was very optimistic that we would not fall off the face of the planet like all the skeptics thought we would despite losing tons of players, but after this game it appears that these very skeptics could not have been more correct. I guess we can still win the rest of our conference games and have a special year…but right now that does not seem possible as at least 2-3 more losses seem much more realistic.
My Observation
A defense that played well – at least well enough. An offense that looked stiffled by a poor quarterback and poor decion-manking ability – by whomever made them. My prognosis is what we all expected but hoped otherwise . . . a season of dissapointment, excitement and triumph. We will likely lose another we shouldn’t, but we may win won we shouldn’t too, ending up with a 4 loss season just like everyone knew we would. Be proud we are not where we were 11 years ago, but don’t get your expectations too high. Last year was a good year! Go Red Raiders!!

You have to get a little closer to MAKE a fieid goal…Our guys just can’t kick for crap!
We need some of those “grew up playing soccer and switched to football” players like the have in Austin….Whew! GO TECH!
Why not
1. Bench Potts until he deserves it and play one of the other QBs. Because honestly, there is not way on earth that they could do any worse in reading a defense and I doubt they would turn the ball over any more that what Potts is doing right now. The difference might be a QB who actually takes charge and becomes the Team leader whcih we do not have right now.
2. Leach has his pirate theme stuff taken away until he shows the right stuff to get them back!
Leach can't win big games on the road.
Time and time again Leach calls odd plays in situations. Whether our QB is playing good or not, if the coach calls descent plays (plays with high percentage) in key situations it would give the offense a better chance at succeeding. Leach threw it twice on 2nd and 3rd down with three yards to go against OU last year near the red zone and we didn’t get anything then went for it on 4th and didn’t get it. Why not run at least once. Tonight against UH he passes on first down then runs on second and long, which forces us to 3rd and long situations. Not that big of a deal cause want to mix it up but time of posession is pretty important in in my opinion and we didn’t do a good job of it on offense. We should try to mix in some play action cause I think this could work as well but we stick to the same pass plays for some reason. Potts could look to dumping it off to his running backs more before he forces throws because there are times when they are open in the flats. We have learned from the past the QB sneak hasn’t worked very well so why not take the points or give it to Batch who is hard enough to tackle as it is? I don’t mind him going for it on 4th and 1 but in the situation of this game he shouldn’t have gone for it; plus it looked like a long 1.
As for the defense, I don’t think it is very hard to pick up what we do. We run the same 4-3 every time and just play a conservative coverage. We don’t mix it up much or show different blitz packages, so over the course of the game other offenses become comfortable especially when Tech has a very poor defensive pass rush. We need to do SOMETHING to get pressure on QBs.
As for Leach it is time to start winning road games that are important and getting your team to play with passion for 60 minutes. You shouldn’t have to call timeouts to motivate your team. Especially wasting timeouts trying to get the other team to jump offsides when our QB is under center; which he never is. Leach I love you to death but you need to take it to the next level. Many people believe we will never win a national title with your style and play calling, but Tech keeps you because you take us to bowl games. Leach it is time step it up on the road cause you don’t look that great outside of the 806.
This is a bad deal but,
I think you guys are giving up on OUR team way to easily. It’s not as easy to root for Tech as it is for UT, OU, A&M, or any other big schools for that matter. Yeah, there where entirely to many bonehead plays called and we didn’t execute like we KNOW how to do. Blaming this entire thing on Potts and Leach is stupid. Yes, a FG would have sealed the deal but we didn’t. I never heard the whistle blown either, that potential TD was taken away from us.
The O-Line is doing everything they can at this point to make it work. We have a lot of young kids trying to figure it out. This takes time. You didn’t see Reed and Vasquez dominating early on in their careers.
I’ll admit, I feel like I was kicked in the groin last night when the 4th quarter ended. That was a hard pill to swallow and the blame is going to be thrown around until next saturday. You guys need to have some faith in your team and your QB. Yes, he was making terrible reads and didn’t even acknowledge the left side of the field. He can’t run a QB sneak effectively. But what about the things he did accomplish last night?
I remember a time when Graham was boo’d at school and everybody hated him until the next game. He shined in the face of adversity. You need to give Potts that same chance. I’m not giving up on the guy. I’m going to give the coaches time to get him back in the game and play like WE ALL KNOW HE CAN. He is a good QB and Leach is one HELL of a coach. Some of you seem like Cowboy fans right now. On the wagon and off the wagon the next play. Support your team, don’t back down, and NEVER QUIT!!
He needs time to figure this out. Has everyone forgot about the 5th year Senior QB’s that had to figure it out thru the course of the season?
I’ll admit, Houston played more like Tech than Tech did. They looked exactly how we should have. Mirror image if you will. But look how we managed to cover a high powered explosive team. Our defense is gassed and needs a break. Had we been giving 2 weeks to get ready for Houston this all might have turned out different.
Support your QB and support your team. This will get better and it takes time…..

That’s all sweet and all…but it’s results that I care about. Not being blind to our weakness. Seeing our team for what it is not being unsupportive. Time some people understood that.
I had no intentions of being sweet.....
A little positive outlook goes a long way. I’m not being blind to our weakness. We have a good team, we just need to get ourselves together.
Saying, " well, we suck again and 7and 5 looks like the outcome for this season" isn’t being supportive if you ask me. Again, my opinion. I’m not going to cup the balls of the team and say it’s going to be ok or it’s alright that we aren’t winning. I am however going to shine like a diamond in a goats ass thru all this negativety….. i.e., supporting my team.

Your Right..
but Tech can not loose to teams they are better then anymore. Tech seems to play to the talent level. Last year was a big step for the program but they can not go back with loses to Houston. Tech is not the same program of the the late 90’s and 00’s. Tech can play with UT and OU but needs to stop having the bad loses.
FIND A WAY TO WIN.
Leave Taylor Alone!...;)
You guys have completely forgotten how bad Graham Harrell was when he first started. I can’t believe some of the things I’m reading here about Potts. You can’t expect him to just come out on the field and run this offense like a seasoned QB when this is just his 4th game! These things take time.
As for Leach, he is who he is. I honestly don’t know if he is going to change. But I’m still thankful to have him. The sky is not falling like alot of you guys sound.
Houston looked like a pretty good football team to me!
The sky is not falling, we are just losing games. If UH hadn’t choked so many times in the red zone and hurt themselves with penalties, they would have embarrassed the hell out of us. We are simply not as good as we thought and hoped we were. We’re not horrible, but we’re not great. When we don’t play as good as we can against good teams, we will get beat. We don’t have that talent cushion we had last year that would let us make up for sloppy play.
I think that Tech is what the record say’s they are. Average. Not good, not bad. All the folks who were clamoring for a BCS bid (when logic dictated we’d struggle this season) are probably in shock. I am not.
I thought, after the UT performance, Tech could be on to something. But it looks now like it was more a matter of just things falling right for Tech against UT. And we still lost by 10.
Potts has no pocket presence, looks VERY tentative, makes terrible checks at the line, and has a much more average arm than I had been led to believe. Will he get better? I hope so. But decision making is the tennant to this offense. We won’t line up and blow by people – Leach refuses to even try. So we have to check. Potts is not good at this yet. He’s a freaking tough hombre, but he’s not a great QB.
The defense is, ummm, typical of what we expect. Not terrible, but not world beaters. They need to work on live tackling, for sure. And the middle is softer than fresh white Wonder Bread.
Our kicking game still sucks. No shock there.
The RBs and WRs are fine, from my perspective. But with such a shockingly weak and timid offensive line, it wouldn’t matter who we put at QB since they can’t protect with any regularity.
This team is staring 7-5 in the eye. Texas A&M, no matter what many here feel, is MUCH improved and is destroying every team they play; OSU is on a roll; Baylor is beating times like we used to; OU is OU; Nebraska is better than Tech.
I think it will take a massive shift in attitude and execution for Tech to make 7 wins. Last week, I believe, was an abbertion. This week seemed more like the other non-UT games all season. We are what we are. Crap.
Houston Fans
I came to the conclusion that all of these so called Cougar fans are some of the most ridiculous fans I’ve been around. That’s saying a lot after being around OU, Texas, & a&m fans.
While at the game last night I was shocked to be called name after name just because I was a Tech fan. I couldnt even get a beer without a drunked group of guys kept yelling Tech fans have no balls because I refused to acknowledge their rants. Also, how can you boo an injury to an oppenent when down on the field (regardless if they are faking it or not). I was however proud of our offensive line when they showed a lot of class and took a collective knee when a UofH player was down for some time. It has been some time since they have had a team play this well, but talk about your fairweather fans.
Rushing the field as a ranked team when they beat an unranked team was a little extreme. They acted like they just won the national championship. Be excited yeah that’s fine, but roughly pushing people to the side to get down to the field is a little much.
Every team is going to have their unruly fans, but I was very dissapointed with the many situations that occured. For those UofH fans that are respectful, congrats on a hard fought game, its just a shame that I have a bitter taste in my mouth from last night
Alright, I feel better now. Let’s hope Leach gets some fire under our guys asses and takes a look in the mirror and we can pull through this rough loss. Keep the faith my fellow red raiders. Wreck Em.

At the bar I was watching the game at, the Houston “fans” there started up a rousing chant of “Fuck Tech”. It made me very sad because I enjoyed rooting for Houston through their down years and didn’t mind pulling for them to do well, but I can’t stand being associated with a fanbase filled with that kinda person.
Houston Fans
Wow! you have to admit it though…Us tech fans are really the worst.
We really are a bunch co classless lowlifes!
It really makes me sad, but it’s the truth
Tech was their "Texas" but Raiders realized it too late
As a long-time Houston resident whose kids are at Tech, I was at the game, and agree with all the technical “insights” of other posters about the quality of both teams. Tech should have won—they had 3 legitimate shots that they blew. The Potts sneak was probably a touchdown [and probably would have been called one were we at Jones]. I thought it was a memorable game even in defeat. But the one thing that might have contributed most to eventual defeat was Leach underestimating the importance of the game itself to the Coogar fans. I have been going to UH games occasionally for years and UH has NEVER had this atmosphere for football! I was at the unveiling of Robertson after renovation a few years ago—big hoopla, big opponent—half full. Even when UH had powerful teams—no one cared. When I feel like going to a game, traditionally I just show up and get a ticket [usually a good seat]] cuz nobody goes 32,000 seats—maybe half sold per game. Imagine my surprise last Sunday when The Chronicle reported the Tech game was an official sell-out—THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENDED, EVER. The atmosphere inside that stadium last night was matched by the pre-game tailgating outside—yes there were a bunch of Tech fans, but a huge contingent of Coogars—all the main parking lots were full 3 hours before kickoff. They were grilling in lots all over campus—again, anyone who knows UH football days would think I am making this up. The stadium recorded over 32,000 the largest crowd to ever see a game in Robertson Stadium. Yes, UH is a commuter school; yes of 33,000 students barely 5000 live on campus, yes it is a “basketball school,” yes, most Coogs graduate without ever seeing a UH football game, but on this night UH acted like it was Tech or Texas or LSU—this was IMPORTANT. And when Tech exhausted its last hope and it looked like UH had held on the kids responded just like Tech kids who had upset UT—they stormed the field. This was their biggest game. And they deserved to storm the field—you see, Coogars don’t storm the field because they usually don’t care enough. But last night it was important, and in a way Tech should be flattered that we were that important to them. I only hope that this spurs similar crowds for UH football because they deserve it—but I feel the next time I want to see UH football I will still be able to walk in as before—college students have short memories.
It's a lot more fun when we're the ones storming the field....
Congrats to the cougars… Big win for them…. Disgusted with our performance…Hopefully, we can learn from it and improve…turn it into something positive…

I can’t hardly stand reading this crap, some of you need to come out of the backroom and and take a turn at getting your ignorant butts taken to the woodshed. I bet you wouldn’t have what takes to make some of these statements to one of the players face one on one, with no one else around. Calling these guys losers is absolutley stupid, who are you to even think that you could even be in their shoes, most of you couldn’t carry their equipment bag. I bet you don’t even go home with who you went to the dance with, it’s so sad to read this garbage from people that are only fair weather fans. It’s easy to be a ney sayer, show some true colors for once. A total group of cowards.

This game was a total fluke where an obviously inferior team won!
