Getting on the Same Page

For those of you who don't know, I usually cannot comment or even take a look at DTN until I get home from work.  Today was one of those days where I was incredibly surprised with the amount of comments and content.  I wanted to take this opportunity to ask everyone a favor, although I think everyone is pretty much on board.

When I first started DTN, I was pretty much by myself.  If there were any comments on game day threads, it was usually me talking to myself.  But that's how these things start.  I've always been a very consistent on the content and I think the content pretty good (although I know I need an editor, most, if not all of the time) and best of all DTN is free.  You can check the sitemeter at the bottom of the page (to the right) to check out how slowly DTN started and where it is today, which is close to 2,600 visitors a day.

With so many visitors and so many opinions, there's going to be differing thoughts and analysis on the game, a play, an entire series, coaching decisions, etc.  I've always tried to maintain an open and honest channel through DTN at the program.  I'm not perfect and I've surely made mistakes when dealing with certain users, it's going to happen and I'm human.  I've tried to err on the side of letting you guys say your peace rather than be a censor because I disagree with your opinion.

The only thing I've ever asked from this blog is to as that you don't be mean. That's it.  The only other minor rule is that you not call anyone a name.  It doesn't matter how childish or silly the name you may call someone, and that includes a player, but when you have to result to name calling, that you're really doing yourself a disservice. I've always thought that calling someone a name is the easy way to try and make your point, which will fail miserably when you result to those types of tactics.

You're better than that.

I think you could also add to DTN's lone commandment, that what you say to your fellow DTN'ers in the comments be something that you would say to them in their face.  If you're not willing to do that, then think twice before about posting.  It's easy to hide behind the facade of a username, but keep in mind that we're all on the same team.

So when so many things happen, like they have over the past two weeks, we as a fan base will invariably all have different opinions about the direction of the program, the coaching decisions, the plays on the field, etc.

I think and I hope that DTN becomes and is a place where we can all have that bar conversation.  Perhaps the unintended consequence about losing two games to two ranked teams is that we, as fans of Texas Tech, are a lot more passionate than we were two years ago.  I think that's great.  When I'm dead and gone, I hope that DTN is the same type of community where Texas Tech fans can gather where the community polices itself and lets others know that being passionate is completely within the rules, but being an ass-hat is not.  I know, that probably means that I'll have to distinguish that gray line between passionate fan and ass-hat, but you guys are free to call a spade a spade.  Let someone know that something is not tolerated here.  We should have a higher standard than message boards.  We should be accountable for what we say.  I'm not looking for anyone to self-appoint themselves as DTN master-of-all, but let's all push each other to be as good as we can possibly be.

At the end of the day, I'm proud of you guys and gals and I think that 95% of the comments I've read today are exactly the type of comments that I'm okay with posting on DTN.  There's always the delicate dance that college bloggers have to undertake because the athletes that are criticized aren't professional, and the likelihood that any more than a handful will play professionally is minimal.  Most of these guys play the game because it's what they love to do and because they hope that a college degree is a door to a better life.

I'm not asking anyone to take it easy on the players, but what I am asking is that when you do criticize that you not attack the player personally and you be specific as to the play or series of events that you feel like need critiquing.  Throwing out generalizations or half-truths make you look like a fan that doesn't know what you're talking about and merely repeating what you heard when you grabbed your lunch at Applebee's.  I believe that when you make specific arguments about plays or players it does two things.  It makes you be critical of the actual play, but perhaps more importantly, it also removes yourself a bit from the emotional side of a loss.

If you've stuck with me this far, I'd like to open up this post to your thoughts or questions.

As I've mentioned above, I think that when I hang up my keyboard, I'm sure that I'll be forgotten and replaced by a new, smarter and better Seth C, but I hope the type of community sticks around for in perpetuity.

Wreck 'Em!

Seth, your charge of DTN is a gift for Tech fans looking for steady, thorough and open information about their team.

Plus, you say things like “ass-hat” and “perpetuity” in one post. That’s awesome.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

We're better than the Longhorn Fans aren't we?

After we beat the Horns in Lubbock last year, all I heard from Longhorn Alumni was “if we had just had that interception” …well you didn’t—-and you lost—-so deal with it!!!

Here we are in the same predicament. If Potts had made the the 7 from the 1 on 4th down Leach would have been a gambling genius. He didn’t. We lost. We need to learn from it and move on. We can still cause a lot of trouble in the Big 12 and we will. Our players are passionate and i’m sorry for them that they had two tough losses in a row. Hopefully it will make them stronger and wiser as a team and we as fans should applaud their efforts not focus on their mistakes. Looking further down the road…I predict we win the Big 12 in 2010 with Taylor Potts at the helm.

Really?

No way a true freshman ever starts as Leach’s QB for a variety of reasons

Karum. A dual threat qb in this system would be deadly

Accountability

The team has lost 2 games in a row on the road to ranked opponents by a total of 11 points. Not bad, I expected better, but anyone who has been following tech should know that this is what we do. We are coming close to not being typical tech, but it is still going to take some time.

I just get tired of the excuses that come from everyone; the refs screwed us again, for example the first touchdown by UH was called a touchdown, then reviewed and still called a touchdown, bottom line is if the refs say it’s a touchdown, then guess what it’s a touchdown. Like Tom Grieve when the Rangers are playing, well that ball was outside the rectangle on my monitor, but the umpire called it a strike, therefore…it’s a strike.

It’s funny the talk about missing Graham, I for one do not miss him. Yes, he could make all the throws, when he had the time. I miss the O-line from last year more than our quarterback. Remember the Nevada/OU/Ole Miss game last year, not the greatest QB performances I’ve ever seen. Potts has only started 4 games, be patient…

How about giving our opponents some credit for stepping up when we didn’t, i.e. UH. A 95 yard game winning drive scoring with :49 seconds left, pretty impressive, regardless of what happened on a 4th and 1. Teams lose games, it just happens, I didn’t like the outcome of the UH game and was really pissed about it for 3 days, but now I realize that what happened was…we lost.

Leach has been doing things like not kicking field goals when he should, going for it on 4th on the wrong side of the field since he has been at Texas Tech, that’s how we roll get used to it.

Everyone wants to blame someone or something besides themselves, so step up and be accountable.

Thank You

I mean this from the heart, Thank You. Your point is well written and should be heeded by all. I for one am proud of the way you stated the facts. This is not about how demeaning fans can be, but how well we can stand up for those who really make all the sacrifices for our enjoyment. These Coaches and Players put so much into being RED RAIDERS I can only wish the best for all of them. When someone attacks them I sometimes react without thought to the author of that post, I truly apologize for my reactions, I should be more considerate. I truly enjoy the efforts that you put forth for our enjoyment and it makes feel a part of the group, even though I am in Kansas. I go to every game to pull for the Red Raiders, without fail I will be at every game, home or away. I am proud that my son choose to be a Red Raider and has allowed me to be a small part of it also. Thanks, Seth. Good post.

I am with you on the whole thing. For the most part, Tech fans have all been upright and fair, although we all have our own opinions on any given subject. We also tolerate those from “alien” fan bases that often are not as upright and fair, especially over the last year. Those same fans seem to be attacking the AJ blog and ESPN’s Tim Griffin’s blog when there is an article concerning Tech. It can be very frustrating when other team’s fans attack Tech, the fans and Lubbock, sometimes in the same sentence. But, as someone posted, this is a free country and we are all free to give an opinion. I do wish everyone who visits this site will try to be less acidic towards the aforementioned. I was raised in Lubbock, graduated from Monterey, and after the Navy toue and a failed marriage, went to Tech a few years, but was unable to complete school and get a degree. Through it all, I have never left Tech as a fan and will always cheer them on on the court, field, course, or podium, while representing Texas Tech and, for that matter, Lubbock. I love both and hope sometime to be able to move back there. If not, I will continue to love them both. When a fan from another school does visit, they must do so with respect, as us Raider fans do when visiting other blogging sites. Whatever is expected from the Tech fan base must be double so from others who are “alien” to this site. Now, about next week. WRECK ’EM, TECH!

I think the biggest difference between the LAJ and ESPN and DTN (I think) is that I’m going to hold you accountable and you can’t just post a comment if you’re not going to add to the conversation.

Well put Seth.

It takes courage to stand up for what is right. There was some grey area here before this post, now…not so much;)

No name calling...

CHECK.

What about comments on each other’s mothers?

Seriously though… great post and more importantly great set of guidelines for a site to live by. That (and your great news coverage and personal insights) are the primary reason I don’t even bother going to ESPN anymore… I can’t stand to read those comment threads, and Tim Griffin is fairly hit and miss as can be expected from anyone tasked with covering 12 teams equally and unbiased.

Great reset Seth.

I like having the goal of NOT becoming a msg board. Always thought they were stupid and uninformed (I know, no name calling).
Anyway, what I have enjoyed about DTN is the well informed community and diverse opinions. Ultimately we are all Tech fans and want the best for the program and school. Hard to question the credibility of an educated fan. Thanks for the work you do…

Comment about mothers

No comments about your mothers or grandmother, for that matter. This one is always here! Like Pilk, was raised near Lubbock, attended Tech, but, did not degree there(one huge regret for me);but, live & breathe all things Red Raider. I am very proud of this school. Know that all (engineering, medicine, nursing, education, fine arts, etc) are well thought of natl. It bothers me greatly to hear over & over again how this is the “same Tech” , doing what “Tech always does”. Those remarks have been made for decades.
We, those of us who love Tech, should never utter those words. Do you understand self fullfilling prophecy? If that is all these kids hear; do you really think they will strive for greatness? They will continue to make mistakes & lose some games(hopefully not); but, their record over the last several yrs indicates that they are not the “same old Tech”.

We hear you

This site has always been a great place to express opinions etc…I think the expectations for our football team this season has been depleted a bit so we may have a sour taste in our mouths. As Red Raiders we will continue to rise above it and hold on to our integrity. We appreciate your work Seth.

Seth. I love this site and visit it everyday. I appreciate all your hard work and love for Texas Tech. I have been on DTN since 2007 and I have enjoyed every minute of it.
