First year QB's first starts comparison
Harrell’s first game he went 34/49 342 yards 7.0 avg 5 td’s and 1 int. The main difference was the rushing he had 138 yards total for the offense against SMU. The score for that game was 3 SMU 35 TTU.
Hodges first game was against Florida International. He went 29 of 37 454 yrds 12.3 avg with 4 td’s and 0 int’s. He also had help on the ground with 135 yards rushing. That final score was FIU 3 TTU 56
Cumbie’s first start was against SMU, he threw 40/66 for 470 yrds, 7.1 avg, 4 td’s, and 0 int’s. He didn’t get much help from the running game as the team had 67 yrds but Cumbie had -10 of that.
Symons’s Start against SMU was 23/38 for 297 yrds, 7.8 avg, 3 td’s and 1 int. The backs gave him 123 yrds on the ground. The score was SMU 10 TTU 58.
And last we have Pott’s first game. He went 34/48 for 405 yrds, 8.4 avg, 2 td and we all know 3 ints. With the backfield getting a combined 40 yrds on the ground, Potts didn’t get much help from them this game.

What do you take away from this? How do you think Potts first time out compares?

It depends on whether the offense changes to encompass Potts' arm strength
If they let him do a little slingin’ down the field, he might distinguish himself. If they keep him within the constraints of the traditional Air Raid, then I think he’ll only be middle of the pack. There’s no way he’s going to be better in this offense than Harrell, though.

Way to early to tell
I think Potts will have a huge game against Rice next week. A poor start this week but lets realize he is just getting the feel for being a starter in a high powered offense. I don’t see him surpassing Harrell by any means but he does have good size and strength. Accuracy is something Harrell had that Potts may not. We’ll have to wait and see. The UT game could be really ugly unless he makes huge strides in his performance. Tech needs to start running the ball more to give Potts the time he needs.

Right
I agree it was just the first game. I just wanted to show all the QB’s first games Potts does Stack up good compared to the rest minus the int’s and the nonexistent running game the first game. 2nd highest average compared to the rest, even with no running game.

I thought that his numbers may be off this year by Tech QB standards due to an increased emphasis on the running game.
In hindsight, I’m not sure why any of us thought there’d be more of an emphasis on that, as Leach never really indicated he’d do that. I guess with the RB talent, we all assumed he’d focus on it a bit more. If the first game is an indication of anything, there won’t be much of a running game again. We’ll see what games two and three look like, especially three.
Potts will be a decent QB for Tech and put up the requisite numbers. He certainly has the physical tools.

First game anxiousness
Though we all want Taylor to be super human it not likely he will skip the very good phase of his game and go straight to superstar. The offense is predicated on routine actions violently executed. Harrell had to throw himself into rhythm. Potts has the skills and supporting cast to be a great QB. He will improve every week. The rest of the TTU offensive cast just has to keep up with the pace of his improvements.
