Double-T Nation Post Season Awards :: Most Improved Offensive Player

This is the first annual "Double-T Nation's Post Season Awards". The categories which the DTN community will be nominating and voting are as follows: Offensive Rookie of the Year; Defensive Rookie of the Year; Most Improved Offensive Player; Most Improved Defensive Player; Special Teams Player of the Year; Offensive Player of the Year; Defensive Player of the Year; and Most Valuable Player.
I'd also ask that you not vote for Leach. I appreciate your loyalty, but I was trying to do something for the players. There are 20 different posts where you can discuss how pissed you are, but you'd be doing me a solid if you could play along.
DTN Post Season Award Winners:
- Offensive Rookie of the Year: WR Alexander Torres
- Defensive Rookie of the Year: S Cody Davis
Today, the DTN community is voting on the most improved offensive player, which can be a bit tough to identify who may have underachieved last year and who shined in 2009.
The first player that comes to mind is LG Lonnie Edwards, who was absolutely dominating once he was given the opportunity to play. Edwards played six games in 2008, but played in eleven games this year (didn't play the Houston and Kansas St. games). If you didn't notice Edwards throughout the last part of the season then that means that he did his job as it didn't seem that his name wasn't called for a penalty for most, if not all of the season.
WR Lyle Leong started his career at Texas Tech in 2007 with ony 15 catches for 174 yards and 1 touchdown and followed that up with a somewhat similar 2008 with 18 catches 206 yards and 3 touchdowns. But in 2009, Leong had a break-out year with 45 catches for 571 yards and 9 touchdowns. Leong's best game was perhaps against Rice where he caught 9 passes for 117 yards and 3 touchdowns, but maybe his most important game was against Baylor where he caught 6 passes for 2 touchdowns, and made plays.
C Shawn Byrnes is another guy that didn't get a ton of mention throughout the year, but last year he had the starting center position taken from him by Stephen Hamby and this year Byrnes won the position back and was solid throughout the year, starting almost every game (Byrnes was out due to injury for 1 game).

Shawn Byrnes
Although you misspelled his name, he was very instrumental in the O-line’s blocking as he called many of the assignments at the line. I think he did an outstanding job and was a leader on the line.
TTpilk
Of the three, I liked Edwards
he has made great progress from last season’s play.
I also have great regard for Leong, but I do not see the improvement per se, he has had more opportunity to play, I am thinking due to other guys not stepping up to the level he was playing even last season. Leong is pretty consistent.
Byrnes did a good job this year, he found himself between a rock and a hard spot last season and that year gave him time to improve while Hamby played…that took some character to do.
Olsen’s game was a good improvement at the critical Left Tackle spot, he went from ‘utility’ lineman to the qb’s blind side protector pretty quickly once he had the opportunity to focus on the role.
I would have to say the most improved player would be Steven Sheffield. The guy came to Tech as a walk on and worked his way up to become the starting quarterback. Thats really impressive.

I didn't
include Sheffield because there was nothing to improve upon (i.e. he didn’t play a snap until this year).
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
He was on the scout team....no?
Thought I heard stories of this. Was listed on newcomer of the year.

Abstain
I think all three did well and can that be attributed to growth and maturity that comes with coaching, experience, and age. If one had jumped to All Conference status it would be easier.
Leong Pic
anybody found a picture of that leaping sideline catch Leong made on that crucial drive of the Alamo Bowl?

I was on the 50yd Line on the Mich St side (the sideline behind Leong when he made that catch) and just saw him appear from in front(behind from my perspective) the Spartan players standing along the sideline and make that spectacular catch

hahaha!
Me too. But I was hanging from the counter of my buddies house thinking that the divide between the carpet and the tile was the end of the earth. Shrooms are one hell of a drug.

IT SHOULD BE!
Hell, if I’d made a catch like that…(and FB was around with the dinosaurs)…I’d have it as my FB photo too! All anyone can say is DAMN!!!
Linemen get no love
I really like Leong. But it’s hard to tell how much he’s improved vs how much his stats improved by being thrown to more often. No denying he made some great catches in clutch situations during the year.
Edwards was a rank rookie stuck in to replace Louis Vasquez. He went from stumbling around lost in that first game to being THE dominant O-lineman late in the year (yes, better than Mr. Facepaint and without all the drama). [Did you notice how many of Batch’s runs came off the left side?] Considering that he started so much lower, I put him as most improved.

Since Adam James
Wasn’t an option….going with Lonnie Edwards. Dude has seen the best in CFB and held his own.

If you didn't choose Edwards
You weren’t paying attention. Outside of Sheffield he’s the most important piece to our offense next season.

Lonnie Edwards is my pick.
Terry McDaniel + Lonnie Edwards reminds me of Reed and Vasquez. Which should be muy bueno for next season. I can’t think of 2 more qualified guys on the roster that should take care of the QB.
