Team Leach Rally-Thursday

Good Morning DTN!  I just wanted to share a few thoughts about the Team Leach Rally coming up today at 1:00 at Memorial Circle.

I had listened to a few of the Team Leach higher-ups on the radio this morning and was very glad the way they approached this.  To those of you who are against this rally, it seems that they have made it very clear that this is a simple demonstration to the administration concerning their actions in this whole ordeal.  Listening to the Morning Drive this morning with Snead and Gus (who were VERY anti-Team Leach and in my opinion did a poor job in the interview) they seemed to make this whole thing a joke, as if to say that these people don't have the right to express their opinion.  Kudos to Texas Tech in all of this for allowing it to happen at Memorial Circle and kudos to the leadership of Team Leach for being civil and respectful.  I hope the rally in not in vain and that the administration allows for details to be made clear.

Conversely, to all of our disgruntled fans (not knowing if there are any still here) who are upset about the hiring of Tuberville, the supposed death of the "Air Raid," the letting go of Lincoln Riley, etc...I hope that you will come back to support this team.  I think Casey Cowan made an excellent point when he said he will be happy as long as we score more points than the other team at the end of the 60 mins.  The world has not ended because we have another version of the spread.  I firmly believe that these games will be just as exciting as the past 10 years.  I'm not saying that you are not allowed to express your opinion (see paragraph above), but I beg you as a non-Tech student supporter, to give this staff and team a chance.  We will know nothing until our boys take the field next year.

Thanks for letting me voice my opinion.  I don't know if the boys are going to have a Team Leach thread up, but if they don't feel free to keep us all posted here for the details for the rally.  God bless.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Some that are attending rally...

My daughter ( a junior at Tech) and several of her friends are attending the rally to not only let the administration know they are unhappy with the way things were handled but to also say “thank you” to Mike Leach for a great 10 years. She even has a “welcome” Tuberville sign.

by MatadorProud on Jan 14, 2010 10:16 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Great idea

I like the idea of displaying a sign in support of the new coach that probably convinces some others that this is not a Tuberville vs. Leach thing. The Board of Rejects needs to see that people still want answers to this whole mess even though we are on board with the new coaching staff.

I love this as long as its focus is anti Hance, anti Meyers, anti Bailey (who just looks like a creeper). Obviously the rally should be very pro Tubberville. And of course very pro-Leach. I would go for sure if I was in Lubbock.

I wish someone can stream this for us somehow so we can see the turnout.

As long as they are opposing the 3 Stooges, then I’m okay with this. I’m a huge Leach proponent and will support his next team, but now on the Tubby wagon (though not happy with some of the staff changes).

by WreckerRaider on Jan 14, 2010 11:22 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'll be there in spirit...

Yes, please be civil and respectful… supportive of the team and new coaching staff…
But the Admin needs to know there are a lot of people who are not happy with their actions and the way they have handled everything…
Best wishes to Coach Leach! Just give him the money and let us all walk away from this with our heads up and proud to have been a Red Raider…

TEAM LEACH = TEAM WEAK

I just logged into the broadcast and I think they have 200 people max. I think this officially end the Team Leach fad.

by adubb05 on Jan 14, 2010 1:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Looks like a small, very small, turnout.

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I can only see the MC, not the crowd.

by Tech-ex: JB on Jan 14, 2010 1:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Tough

to call it a crowd. Maybe a small gathering. They panned around to the people, it was pretty pathetic.

"Tough to call it a crowd."

Not sure if that was meant to be funny, but I can’t stop laughing…

kinda looks like some friends

were drinking some beers and said “let’s get a PA and mic and head over to Memorial Circle”.
I’m all for it, but not the turnout I expected given the billboards and awareness of the event.

I’m laughing outloud at this…and people thought they’d get 1,000.

I keep logging on

and then closing my browser. too painful to watch. Hance is laughing his ass off at this. He’s gotta be sitting in the Admin bld calling people and telling them to check out the “crowd” in the circle.

sorry dudes. you can demand all you want. but they aren’t concerned with 50 or 100 people.

frankly, if I’d taken my lunch hour to go to that (if I were in Lubbock), I’d be pissed!

So, it actually looks like most of those kids were on their way between classes and just stopped by. I wouldn’t call this a rally. They did swing the camera around to show the kids. And the speakers are awful…just awful. Nice try, Team Leach.

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 1:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

This is close to a pathetic showing…..sad event and poor planning!

by WreckerRaider on Jan 14, 2010 1:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

So, Leach just called in. Technical difficulties…Leach was proud to be the coach for 10 yrs. Some moron keeps yelling “Coach, we love you!” Call lasted about 15 seconds.

Judging by the crowd noise, I’d guess less than 100 people actually there. The rally is now over.

Lasted 28 minutes. I’m still giggling at this.

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 1:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

how'd he know who to call??? what number to call???

Can you imagine if coach Leach had actually taken the time to show up in person??? How embarrassing.

Leach just called in...

For like 10 seconds… pretty lame I must say. I hope all this ‘team leach’ stuff will finally go away so we can rally behinds Tubs

by Vassago77379 on Jan 14, 2010 1:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I was wrong. They showed all the “crowd”…probably less than 100 were there or passing by. And they actually spent money advertising this. I guess people just like to attach themselves to a cause more than actually stand up for a cause.

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 1:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Honestly...

That showing was just pathetic. I wasn’t ‘anti’ team Leach until I saw this stuff being so commercialized on FB and everywhere online… This just looks lame and bad. All of like 12 people were there.

by Vassago77379 on Jan 14, 2010 1:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Should they have tried for the weekend? I guess they thought it would be a good time for people to ditch classes since it was the first couple of days and all, but I wonder if Saturday would have been a better day since no one would be in classes then? Or maybe they only would have had 10 people there instead of 100? Too hard to tell.

I just feel sorry for the poor sap who drove 14 hours from Arizona to attend that ‘rally’.

by theta12 on Jan 14, 2010 1:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that dude qualifies for stalking. Leach should be worried.

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 1:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

as stated earlier

I’d have been PO’d if I drove from across town during my lunch hour for that, much less from Arizona. Holy cow. They owe that guy some gas money for sure.

800 is absurd...google this for pics and tell

me if you think there was a person over 200

by Tech92 on Jan 14, 2010 9:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It looks like it could be 800 to me. Team Leach is claiming 1200-1500. Whatever the number, the group looks small because it was such a large area to fill. Similarly, 40,000 people are going to look awfully small in that 61,000 Jones AT&T Stadium year after next.

by Shallowater on Jan 14, 2010 10:04 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I did look at the pictures and the footage

and there were WAY more than 200, I think the TTUPD was closer with their 12 to 1500 estimate which is pretty good for something like that.

What was the weather like today? Can they blame the poor turnout on the weather like the first rally that was held in a blizzard?

by Shallowater on Jan 14, 2010 3:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I got out of class early, and decided to stop by the rally to see what it was all about. It was an OK turn out. . you were either a crazy pirate fan or someone curiously passing by.

Overall, it was kind of strange, but they definately pointed out that everyone present supports the current coaching staff and players. It was more of an attack on the administration.

Leach did call and that was pretty cool. Gotta move on though.

by taraebeth on Jan 14, 2010 3:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Where were all of the protestors?

Looks like we’ve seen the grand finale “Rally”. While its great that we have the freedom to get lathered up, rally, protest, and offer public opinions, it appears to me the Team Leach movement has lost it’s legs. If some want to protest against the methods of Leach’s firing then so be it, but I’m through fretting over the negatives and look forward to the Success of the Raiders led by the Riverboat Gambler!

by TDSTAR on Jan 14, 2010 4:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Lots of those facebook Team Leach members joined the group in the few days following the suspension on December 28. Support waned as the facts came out and the issues were drug through the mud. As unhappy as many people were, I believe most people have settled down to realize that: 1) Leach ain’t coming back; 2) Hance/Myers/Bailey ain’t going anywhere; and 3) there’s absolutely nothing they can do about it.

by Shallowater on Jan 14, 2010 5:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

A more massive rally would’ve provoked action…

Hard to argue with the horde of guys with the pitchforks and the torches.

It made local news

which was part of the big plan. The guy from AZ was actually happy about it haha. And there are already plans for another rally soon if nothing happens. I’m all for moving on, but I definitely see their point. As long as those 3 are in charge, the only way a coach can keep his job is if he is there little puppett. Why is being a puppet a part of the job requirements at Tech? I honestly dont see this group falling apart unless 1.) The big 3 are reprimanded (which at this point looks highly unlikley) or 2.) Truth comes out in court that shows that their actions were justified.

by RdrPwr on Jan 14, 2010 6:06 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Poor Planning...

Who is going to attend a rally at 1pm on a Thursday? People have to work. A lot of students are in class. Fridays are probably better for most people. Do it during lunch and have Papa John’s, Klemke’s, or someone bring a few hundred pizzas/sandwiches.

Also, “Team Leach” evokes the wrong message for what (I feel) most people want, which is to show displeasure with the TTU admins over how they treated Leach / handled the situation. I wouldn’t show up for a rally whose goal I thought was to bring Leach back when most people had already given up on that.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me...

And yep, I expected more people...

Just because of all the advertising (and free advertising through the media) it was getting. They needed to read some of LondonRaider’s posts about Hance instead of whoever was up there rambling.

Good points.

Couple of other points: 1) There was no special parking for the event, so people probably had to walk a half-mile away. 2) They picked a location that was too large for the crowd. A crowd of 10,000 would look small on that mall.

by Shallowater on Jan 14, 2010 6:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Lack of parking is a great point. I had to walk from a nearby church to get to class.. its not the most convenient thing ever.

Definitely should have been scheduled for a saturday

so people could park in the SUB and Library lots.

That is the focus of team leach, to show displeasure to the admins. Sure some crazies are in the group, but that doesnt make it the group’s focus. The rally today was supposedly in order to give thanks to Mike Leach and to express their concerns with the administration.

by RdrPwr on Jan 14, 2010 6:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I just meant that as a name, “Team Leach” suggests you are primarily concerned with supporting Leach. It was a better name during the suspension. Not that I have better suggestions for what to call it other than “Team Fire The Three Stooges”.

Free Food = Bigger crowd

Instead of all of the billboards and such, they should have just spent the money on pizza.
Everyone knows the fastest way to gather a crowd of broke college kids is to offer free pizza. You do that and folks come out of the woodwork.
I also think a Saturday rally would have made more sense.

Make no mistake, free food = big crowd.

It's the name.

Team Leach says Bring back Leach no matter how you try to spin it.

A better name would have gotten better results from the off-line world although wouldn’t have garnered near the results online.

Bad marketing and PR from the get go.

Plus – My understanding with some folks working at Tech is that the effort was severely hindered from the beginning with negotiations for when and where they could do the rally. Whoever “allowed” Team Leach to do the rally on campus in the first place helped ensure that the time and place would work against the rally.

Whoever was in charge either didn’t know how to negotiate or didn’t have the clout to get a better spot or time.

Remember that this rally was put together by people NOT in politics against people who ARE in politics and know about PR.
