Attention Please. Want to have some fun???
With all due respect and reverence to everything going on over the past month, I thought I would throw out an idea and see if we can have some fun.
If there is one thing we can all probably agree on, it is the fact that the 4 or 5 (my case 5.5) years we spent at Tech were some of the most fun and likely irresponsible years of our lives.
Given the wide-range of age groups and years (60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, etc.) spent in Lubbock, I thought it would be fun to take a minute a educate one another.
So if you want to participate, without further explanation:
Name your favorite Bar, Pub, Nightclub and any details of the establishment from when you were in school (drink specials, special drinks, any unique features, etc). Also, if there was a particular night for a specific location throw that in as well (i.e. Midnight Rodeo on Wednesday nights).
Let's have some fun....
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

So, due to financial issues (putting myself through school), I mastered the seven year plan. 1985-1992.
Worked at The Planet/Mars for a while. Their weekend $5 cover, all you can drink till midnight is probably very illegal these days. Pushing drugs from the DJ booth was always a joy. They made some drink called a CKS. No idea what was in it, but it was red and it got me really intoxicated really quickly. After parties at Sulana’s house could border on epic.
Quad Night (Thurs) at Bash’s was always good for at least one vomit episode per week.
Sing Along with Kyle Abernathy at On Boradway (now Crickets, I think) was stellar.
Who can forget Midnight Rodeo…any night…any drink.
atta boy
Good work ’92. Had forgotten about Quad Night. Which if you have ever gone to Quad Night, you know that is not hard to do.

Yep.
J Pat’s was a great afternoon joint. Night time too, but lot of fun in the afternoon for happy hour.
Enjoyed the Depot Beer Garden during the summer. Fun hang out.
Loved The Spoon too.

+1 new liver

One more I recall
There was the seafood joint on Old Brownfield Hwy before you get to Quaker. I don’t remember the name.
They had frozen mugs & pitchers and had Killian’s Red on tap. Spent many a Friday afternoon there.
More of a restaurant than bar, but ice cold beer. Anyone remember that place?
IMWTx
Otto & Thibadeaux's was it
Good work CRV. I figured someone would remember.

the brittany on 50th
they had the best hickory burgers and milk shakes by
far. But the best place was a cotton farm out south of
town. After dark of course. hope the wifey does not log on
tonight.
"uh, uh, well, uh yeah, I think the guys, uh played, uh pretty well in the second
half." The captains words, after uh, the insight bowl. You're the best Mike!
I want to hear more about this cotton farm.........
Sounds like Lubbock’s version of the bunny ranch.
Shiner and Crawfish
at Lone Star Oyster Bar on 34th; never cared much for the one on Slide. I was there when they started re-developing the Depot District (i.e., closed the actual Depot Restaurant) and there was a pretty good microbrewery and pizza joint (Hub City Brewery?). Damn good Colorado Bulldogs at some shady bar on Q; the bouncers carried stun guns. Midnight Rodeo and Cowboys were still around and highly active. There was another bar/restaurant by the old 9-hole golf course (that was leveled for Wal-Mart; on 4th outside the loop).
Oyster bar...
That was my fav for food and drink.
I was on the 'Tech in a Decade' degree plan
This list might explain why:
Dorm years (1977-79):
Applause (Thursday ladies light and dollar Long Island Iced Teas). Needed somebody with a car for that one
Main Street Saloon – What was that mini shuffleboard table called? Pictures of the Flatlanders on the wall
Fat Dawgs (all time champion Lubbock college bar)
The Brittany – Dollar pitchers of beer on Wednesdays
Chelsea Street Pub on University
Gardskis Loft – Sunday night dinner when the dorm cafeteria shut down. Good walking date place too.
Places whose name escapes me now but whose memories never will:
Place on 19th and S, southwest corner? Part college bar, part biker bar. Lotta pool tables in the back. Video games in the front
Club on top of the Mexican Restaurant on the Southeast corner of Q and 4th St. Big fraternity hangout
Country bar owned by Eli backed up to Brownfield highway just off Indiana or Slide
Some disco on East Broadway that burned down eventually – lighted dance floor, smoke from the floor & bubbles from the ceiling. All the disco clichés.
Another Eli owned bar on Slide north of Brownfield highway. Many wet t-shirt contests attended.
Pool hall, hamburger joint in the Furrs parking lot just across from the bubble on 4th street.
1979-81 – The fraternity years:
Coldwater Country (ideally when Joe Ely Band was playing). Wednesday night Crash and Burn Night. 25 cent tequila shots & 25 cent Lone Star Beer.
The Rox (building still there, we pass it on the drive to & from every game). Saw the Ramones, Talking Heads, Joan Jett (the night Iggy Pop cancelled due to an ice storm), The Clash with Joe Ely (that was a tour), Delbert McClinton. The place that brought punk & the new wave to Lubbock. God Bless it.
- Greek Circle, then occasionally crashing parties at the other fraternity houses, although that could be dangerous.
1980-82 – The out of school working at Lakeridge Country Club years:
A dance club on top of the 4 story building in the Albertsons parking lot on Slide & Loop 289
A tiny bar behind the old Barnes & Nobles/Circuit City/SouperSalad shopping center on the east side of Slide south of the loop
Chelsea Street Pub in the mall
Harrigans
Then in May 1982 I quit drinking. I did eventually return & finish my degree but the bars no longer held the same charm for me. Those were the days my friends.
The Country bar owned by Eli backed up to Brownfield highway just off Indiana or Slide
That was Dallas Nights, I believe. And the burger joint on 4th was The Caboose I think.

Must've crossed paths...
1977-1983
Many nights spent at Rox — “This ain’t no disco” — taking hits with the owner Carlos in his office. Some great shows.
Fat Dawg’s
Abbey Road
Joe Ely at Coldwater
Town Draw — I worked there for a summer. Broke up a fight that involved a pistol. Good times.
J.Pat’s in the afternoon.
Stubb’s BBQ on the east side. My roommate used to loan him $$ to make rent. Saw George Thorogood.
8 Second Ride?? – not sure the name, but they had $0.15 tequila shots on Wednesdays. Grab some loose change from the couch and you could belly up at the bar for the night.
Abbey Road
Saw Joe Kink Carrasco there once. A very drunk friend wanted to steal Jo King’s famous crown. NOOOO. We got him out of there before he created an international incident. That was also the night the pogo dance morphed into the slam dance for the 1st time. There I was pogoing away minding my own business when a younger guy put his shoulder into my chest. WTF? No more punk dancing for me once slam dancing took over the pit in front of the stage.
This was my decade
The only one I don’t see mentioned was Uncle Nasty’s, just down the street from Main Street saloon.
Nothing seemed to compare to Crash and Burn, at Coldwater Country, the converted bowling alley, on Wednesday Night. You could always count on something “unusual” happening on that night…… One night about 50 windshields got broke out. About every other week, the fire hoses were pulled out in the dorms. people passed out in the elevators, without clothes on, oh, except for their boots……
That was near my era as well... 79 - 84...
I definitely remember one night when the windshields got broken…
And trying to steal Joe King’s crown sounds familiar… he would take his electric guitar out of Fat Dawgs and across the street on 4th and keep playing all the while…
Many good, but blurry memories of live music at Fat Dawgs…
Enjoyed J Pat’s near campus, or Stubbs in the afternoon when I should’ve been in class or studying…
The Spoon was a classic…
Then later in grad school, the Depot Beer Garden and Lone Star…
A few times, some buddies and I jumped the fences at Jones Stadium in the middle of the night with our coolers of beer… ran around on the field and threw beer bottles at each other… that was really the beginning of the Air Raid…

time warp mbrown603...nice going...
Im glad someone was paying attention…what about Copper Caboose, 3838, that disco on the top floor of the office building by the mall, silver dollar saloon, but the big guns were Fat Dawgs, Uncle Nasty’s (seeing my first wet tshirt contest), Applause, Cold Water Country, Santa Fe Station and too many others that I cant think of the names but I can sure picture them in my mind like it was yesterday…drinking vodka collins, lone star, 25c tequila shots and heading straight to weiner schnitzel after a wild night of either disco (beegees), c&w (ray wiley hubbard) or both…thanks for stirring up the memories…would not trade any of it for the world
Since this IS a sports site
One of my fondest memories was the Coaches All-America Game in the summers. You could actually bring coolers into the Jones. Saw the likes of Lynn Swan, Randy Gradishar(sp), etc.
Godfathers’s at Main and X and Uncle Nasty’s were the two good dance places during my day, but Freeman’s on Broadway was the origianl.
For a good handout place, nothing beat Fat Dawgs on 4th. Caprock still has the bar and the sign from there.
I was in a frat – so kegs on every day that ended in Y
and for you youngsters……….the women have always been hot at Tech.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
Who said drinking wasn't a sport??? LOL
All depends on how you played the game I guess. I somehow got in Fat Dawgs when I was a freshman in high school…Good times.

I was at Tech from 2003-2007
and by far, the place to be was CHIMY’S!! Greatest margaritas anywhere in Texas, tastiest nachos, all around really fun place to go. Everyone was there at any time, any day of the week. I’d give my right arm to have a Chimy’s where I live now.
Beer Garden/Daq Lounge and The Library were really fun places to chill on the weekend too. Awesome specials (The Library had $2.50 LIT’s) and all around a lot of fun!

Freshman year
The Strip!! Of course, we got older guys to buy our beer/wine coolers!
Dallas Nights – Thursday
The Planet – Friday and Saturday
The Spoon – Whenever!
Greek Circle – No need to pledge a sorority if you can get in after 10! (However, I was a KD Legacy, but I never joined.)
Next Few Years…
Bash’s
Depot Beer Garden
The Planet
Midnight Rodeo – opened my sophomore year
There was a bar on 19th St between University and Ave Q. It had a beach theme to it, but I can’t remember the name of it to save my life. All I know is that I had a lot of fun dancing on the surfboard tables.
We had to have crossed paths...
“Let’s go to the F#*&ing PLANET!!!
River Boat Gamblers are ALL IN!
'85 - '87
Fat Dawgs (at least for a year)
The Spoon
The Lone Star Oyster Bar (both)
Jazz
The Depot
Worked in the bars at La Bodega, Mesquites (made a fine bloody Mary for those that wanted to get to class in the right frame of mind) and Santa Fe (mbrown603 – That’s @ Q & 4th upstairs – and that place actually rocked most nights)
70's
Freeman’s – Thursday nite beer nite
Fat Dawgs was always fun
Main Street Saloon
Chelsea Street Pub – but it was pricey for a poor college kid
The sometimes biker bar on 19th, (I can’t remember the name either) was in a real low brow hotel. Close the McDonalds. Loved to go play pool there and have a few beers. Sometimes had to leave early to avoid trouble.
And sometimes Pizza Hut after playing basketball at night, pitchers and pizza were both cheap and they were open until 2 on weekends.
04-08
Fox and hound $2 pints anything on tap… Also enjoyed library where either bottles or pints were $1 every night… Chimy’s margaritas always put u on your ass but too Greek for me… Usually just chugged down a couple margaritas and went somewhere else to drink for the night

Fortunate for my education . . .
there wasn’t a F&H in Lubbock during my days, although I formally introduced several year’s post-TTU while on a long-term project in Winston-Salem, NC.
I served most of you people!
My first bartending gig was at Copper Caboose 4th Street when I turned 21 (1988). Prior to that I was a bouncer at Dallas Nights. I bounced and bartended at Bash’s on and off all the way until 1995. I met my wife at J. Pats 20 years ago. I was kicked out of BOTH Lone Star Oyster Bars at least 25 times each.
My first bar experience was Fat Dawgs and the Spoon (quite often) when I was 15… my sister took me there whenever I visited from Odessa.
Peace
... I'm just sayin'
Dude, I guarantee you I know you. I lived at Bash’s most weeks. Kicked out numerous times…and arrested once. Yikes. Good friends with the guys in the band Keeping Time. Remember them?? Used to hang with Danny from Touch, as well.
I would know you
… I remember those bands… somewhat. I wasn’t sober too much back then. Mike (the owner) and I were friends and business partners. We owned and operated the homebrew store that was in the place where Crickets is now. I bartended there a lot, mostly on Thursday nights though to help out with Quad Night or when we had Penny Pitchers (remember that?).
Peace
... I'm just sayin'
I knew we had a connection, you're from Odessa......

Hm… mondays are definitely reserved for penny pint night at Bash’s.
Tuesday Boozeday anywhere
Wednesday- Hump day, cheap bottle of wine and a girl obviously.
Thirsty Thursdays-also college night at Wild West and Daquiri Lounge. Cheap admission and cheaper drinks.
Fridays-Start at the Daq for 0.25 wells, then head over to WW around 1030 for the show and the girls
Saturdays-concerts at WW or the amazing house parties
Sunday Funday-beer, BBQ, and washers in the yard. (Or NFL if its cold)
Many great places...
Both O bars, J Pats, Mesquites, Fat Dogs, willow hill diner for Thursday ladies night, Stanley, towndraw, singing with Charles at the days inn (karaoke), the planet, toucans, gardskis and the beer garden.
But mostly, Jazz ( why were the pitchers not cold) and # 16 Greek Circle.

Good trick you can do with the plastic pitchers...
Pick pitcher up off table/bar with your teeth….
Lean head back and guzzle entire pitcher…
Set pitcher back on table/bar with teeth (or just drop it)…
Look Ma… No hands!!!
(Actually helps if the beer is a little warm…)

Gardski's on Slide . . .
I remember a good friend of mine using one of the speed bumps in the parking lot as a makeshift pillow after a particularly good evening. When I start thinking about the “old times”, I have to thank the good man upstairs that we didn’t live in the camera phone generation.
Man, y’all must’ve had a lot more choices than we did in olden days. No liquor or beer sales were allowed in town when I started in ‘69. The Cotton Club south of town was BYOB for shit-kickers or goat-ropers. Might be the same building y’all are calling Dallas Nights. BYOB at all the frat parties, of course. A couple of bootleggers just off campus saved trips to the strip with fake IDs, but choices were awful limited unless you liked Jim Beam or vodka.
Those were the hippie days and some of the most popular activities were frowned upon in public places. (Statute of Limitations has run) By then, we had rented a 5 bedroom, 2-story house on 13th street and became party central with hot and cold running coeds. Santana, Ten Years After, etc at the coliseum. Reefer Madness at the SUB for a hoot. No screening for booze at the football games. Hardly remember how any ended. Almost all of us had a semester or two of scholastic probation for not going to class.
Just before I left they passed liquor-by-the-drink. The first to get licensed was a rock/disco club called Eli’s on Broadway. None of the clubs around campus existed yet. Same for chain restaurants except for the IHOP on University and a Der Weinersnitzel that used to be about where Chilis is now. Nonetheless, the best days of my life.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James

….and don’t forget dodging the Liquor Control Board agents which I failed to do on one occasion in ’69
"We cannot continue to enjoy the result, if we neglect and abandon the cause."
How could I forget the Cotton Club?
I saw Muddy Waters play there. Then there was the famous end of summer 1979 “First Annual Lubbock or Leave it Attitude Adjustment Seminar”. I still hear the story of how the girl driving me home from that had to keep removing my feet from her steering wheel on the drive home. I imagine I was trying to get comfortable for a nap.
I'm thirsty now though

'80-85
Fat Dawgs – They had “hangover sauce” in their beer but they also had the best musical acts. Loved seeing Stevie Ray Vaughn (I think early ’82) and Ultimate Force was a ton of fun as well. Drunk, drunk coeds standing on tables getting their drinks on full throttle swaying to the band.
Peppers – Drinking something out a sombrero that was on fire plus they took checks!!
Applegates – 3 for 1 Happy Hour from 10-11.
Lone Star Oyster Bar – Loved the schooners o’ cold beer to wash down a ton of fried food.
JP O’Malleys – Wanna say the pitchers were $ 1.50 on Monday night. Loved going there on Fridays. So, so dark in there and it made the sun look like the world’s largest spotlight when you walked outside.
Stanleys – Saw Jackson Browne there one evening. Great place in the early 80s.
The Spoon – They used to have a shot called a “Chili-tini” that was mindnumbing.
Buckets – May have been there for a year or two.
The Diner – Started drinking Coronas here.
There was also some comedy club we used to go to in the summer and on Thursday nights we’d get 32 oz cans of Miller Lite for $ 1.
Great thread.

Jackson Browne in Lubbock in the late 70's /early 80's
I kept hearing stories of people seeing Jackson Browne in bars in Lubbock in those years. I thought they were just urban legends. Why on earth was Jackson Browne hanging around Lubbock? He never did a concert there that I could remember during that time.
02-08
Kluzos, hub city brewery, beer gardens early years
then when I turned 21 Crickets, Rockies, Chimys
Monday – Bashes 2 cent pints
White wednesdays at Crystals dollar pitches
Thursday – Conference dollar pitchers
some others…toms daquri lounge, library, jpats
They closed midnight rodeo down in 2003 If i remember correctly….way to many alchol violations! lol
PS: I bet $100 on tech tonight, they better not fuck it up!
You poor things. I can't imagine college without an 18 year old drinking age.
What did you do the 1st three years?
Lubbock is now wet
just think about coing to tech and being able to go down the street and buy a 6 pack!
Yeah, but . . .
those last minute beer runs to The Strip provided many good stories and plenty of close calls. As screwy as it was, The Strip certainly contributed to the Lubbock experience.
Totally agree
Some great times (now that we can look back alive) on late night trips to the strip to get some beer before closing time.
Not to mention it was a great place to find out about last minute house parties. Kinda feel bad for the kids today to not get those experiences.

Without stopping by Pedro’s Tomales on way back. Best thing about strip….at 11:20 at your own house party, you incite a panic by stating we’re almost out of beer, we gotta pass the hat around for new kegs before the strip closes. Collect money, go buy natty light, throw the miller or coors lids on the side so they’re too drunk to know the difference.

Cafe J’s on 19th……..one of the best secrets in town for a date and drink. We could walk in there from our house and get completely f***** up blackout drunk and someway somehow always ended up watching the sun come up from our front porch on 21st. Best part is our neighbor across the street was a cop whose shift started at 5am. Many a morning being woken up with his flashlight and sirens going. He thought that was the funniest shit he’d ever done. Our neighbors didn’t appreciate it though. That’s the fastest I’ve seen some of my friends ever run to this day.

Crammed 4 years into 6.....
1997-2000
Underage, so stuck with #6 Greek Circle. I could some up those experiences with the simple phrase, “unclean…….unclean”
2000-2003
Chelsea Street Pub (the mall): Karaoke with David Trout
The Recovery Room (the Lubbock Inn Bar): Karaoke
Adolfs: Horrible little dive bar on the back side of s crappy shopping strip in between Slide and the mall.
The Blue Light (Depot): Went to this place when it just opened replacing a piano bar. Frat brothers and I stumbled over from Tom’s Daiquiri Factory one night to see Stoney Larue playing before he had a band. There was about 8 people total. Saw Wade Bowen play there for the first time, also saw Cross Canadian, Pat Green, Corry, and eventually every other Texas Country act. When I left school in 2003 this place was standing room only, and THE live music bar in Lubbock.
Tom’s Daiquiri Factory: Tuesday nights with Matt. Just two guys, a couple of “call-a-cab”, and piss poor attempts to find chicks willing to come home with us.
Stubbs Depot: Saw West 84 become Wade Bowen and the West 84
band.
Crickets: Wed. nights listening to “Plain Brown Wrapper”
Rocky Larues: Too bright, but had some good times
Midnight-Rope-A-Ho (Midnight Rodeo): cheap beer, but too many people, couldn’t get a buzz if you wanted to, too many hicks looking for a fight
Cowpokes: Crappy country bar on 4th, eventually tore down to make way for Marsha Sharpe Frwy
4 Bar K and Old Town: Rented out for various date parties, good times
The Spoon: Has any one mentioned pitchers of “Cherry-bombs”? Stopped by in the last year and someone was stabbed in the bathroom, not the same place.
Chimey’s: this place just opened when I graduated, but when my wife and I came back to Lubbock have spent quite a few afternoons on the patio. Awesome food.
Nibbles:Yes I am going to admit frequenting the local men’s club anytime someone turned 21. BYOB, you could bring your own keg, and see all the c-section scars you wanted.
Conference: Great Greek bar on 4th across from the UMC.
My junior year in high school
we rented a fraternity house for the after-prom party. The beer was flowing freely…..

Questions...Little help please
I finished up in fall ‘94. Can’t believe I forgot Cowpokes. And I do remember Cherry bombs, wow!
The Blue Light, is that the place on the corner directly across the street from the Beer Garden? Used to go there for live music a lot, but I can’t remember the name when I was in school. Think it was called The Depot something. Too many shows to remember.
Do remember seeing Jerry Jeff Walker @ Midnight Rodeo once. Great show from what I recall.

The Blue Light......
is actually kind of in the middle of the strip of bars, not on the corner. It used to be called something like “Kyle’s 88 Keys” or something. Didn’t see Jerry Jeff, but saw David Alan Coe at Midnight Rodeo.

Started TTC in 1963...
fumbled my way around for a couple of years, working my way, and learning how to drink too much beer…not hard for an 18 or 19 year old to do if he met the right people. Met a girl, got married and went into the Navy in 1966.
Started back to TTU in 1970, learned that the best way to finish an afternoon engineering lab was to spend a couple hours with classmates at Fat Dawg’s…I never liked it but they served those weird pitchers of red beer.
Wasn’t there a great little place called “The Italian Cafe” off College Ave (University) about 14th ?
I worked a lot of jobs during all that time, the best and last was about two years with RETCO Mfg out on the Amarillo Hwy…owner Roy Thompson, a fine man whom treated me especially well. He had a beautiful young daughter who kept books, she had married a bright young, somewhat entreprenuer like Roy…I think the son-in-law and daughter, perhaps with dad’s help started the Depot as a restraurant and it grew from there.

Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship...
Until that pirate ship goes apeshit crazy with cannonballs!!! Sorry, I had to throw that one out there! AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
I was at Tech from ‘92-96 and i can’t believe no one has mentioned “The Tunnel”. Good club with a mix of hip hop, old school 80’s, and mainly techno.
I graduated high school late so was not even 18 in September 1992. They let me in anyways and here was the bonus part…..THEY SERVED ANYONE!! I literally walked up to the bar and ordered what ever hell the special was and chugged down. It was great and surreal…….of course, the fine establishment closed down in 1993 due to alcohol violations, orderly disturbances, etc.ect.
Other places like Lonesome Dove, Davelonth, all tried to copy this place, but never came close.
Great hors d'oeuvres and awesome atmosphere.
Some really great people ran/run that place. Haven’t been in ages.

Puked in the bushes and punched my way back inside for my Vintage Astros Hat, circa 2004.
I haven’t been back since. The pond behind the gaslight stinks to high Heaven, mainly when your best friend named Brian goes for a swim in November while you are trying to figure out what exactly a “dirty squirell” or a “matt shot” is and why you decided to be cool and take it. I was green for about 2 days….

2005-2008
For some reason I graduated early, but we ALWAYS hit the broadway run of Chimy’s (half & half ritas or Dr. Pepper shootouts), Mesquites (every shot you can imagine), then Crickets (every beer on tap and good live music). Also, while Cafe J’s was a good date spot, you can’t beat Triple J’s food and atmosphere for a date…plus it’s a microbrewery!
79 to 83+1
J. Pats way too often (pretty short walk from Sneed Hall— that’s what put me on the five year plan)
Copper Caboose— 4th St.
Santa Fe— 4th and Q (met a girl there that I still dream about— don’t tell my wife, though)
Main St. Saloon— another much too convenient location
Some dive on N. University that a couple of my working buddies took me to— I was the only white guy in the place
Ah, those were the days.
I think most of you are aware that I attended college somewhere else and then moved to Lubbock.
I frequented Lubbock probably as much as most of you went to class. My wife graduated from Tech, we where there from 2001 or 2002 until 2006. But, the plus side was that all of my friends from High School went to Tech, so we always had somewhere to go……
Bash’s on Monday nights for obvious reasons.
Adolf’s for Karaoke. If any of you guys have been there when a cute blonde does a horrible job at karaoke, that’s my cousin Andi. She’s the shit and she can’t sing. She knows it but just likes to watch everybody laugh.
I frequented the Silver Bullet quite a bit. It was a dive but they served beer in bathtubs as far as I was concerned. Huge glasses!! Fox and The Hound on Wednesday nights for Preacher’s Callers. The Library to get into trouble with friends. Midnight Rope – a – Hoe was also a place we liked to get into trouble.
There was some court-yard thingy we would go to for outdoor concerts around the Depot District. BYOB and just listen to music. Pretty cool place to hang out.
Daquiri Lounge – Beer Garden – Champagne Room? – Something like that. The guy that owned that place was great friends with Jeff whom owned Stan’s Car Stereo. I’m not going to tell you why we decided to take Jeff’s H1 Hummer and drive around, but we did.
Jake’s was always a good hangout for me. Frequented Bleacher’s quite a bit too. The Spoon to watch some bands play. Same thing with Jake’s. Hub City Brewery had Natural light out of the Keg for 10 cents a glass. That was rough but we did it.
Did anybody else get as drunk as I did in Lubbock?

Did anybody else get as drunk as I did in Lubbock?
Yes. In fact, the only nights I didn’t at least catch a buzz was Tuesday during the fall and Sunday and Monday and Tuesday the rest of the year. It was sick. Fun, but sick.
87-92
I’m Irish so I was at all the above mentioned at least once.
Favorites: Bash’s quad night the absolute best. J-Pat’s was always a great place to grab a pitcher after finals. Midnight Rodeo was a great place to meet older women who loved the college guys :)
Lone Star Oyster Bar and Copper Caboose always great for hanging out. The Planet was dangerous with the “all you can drink” thing. I remember several of my buddies and I getting kicked out my freshman year. I’m really fortunate to have survived my 5 years at Tech with no rehab. I have very little memory of Thursdays thru Sundays.

On Broadway. I can’t remember if it was penny pitchers or nickel drinks. I probably couldn’t remember the day after either. Would tear the karaoke up every wednesday. Then it closed down for selling to minors.
Cowpokes for the young ones, Midnight rodeo for the old ones. Chances R for the really ond ones. Chances R your gonna have a good time…and std!
Lonseome Dove… Roadhouse Rubies
Liquid 2000
Mirage (tejano bar) for the nickel drinks. We were the only white boys in the joint.
Penny for a Pint and Nickel for a pitcher would be Bash's!!

Anybody play golf in your spare time? Many good hours were had slashing away at Treasure Island.
we had a summer game there
Once or twice a week we put together a game of anywhere from 8 – 16 guys. everyone put in $5 and paid out 3 places. mostly though it was for laughs and beer.

1996-1999
J Pats – little smokie smoke in the back of the bar on occasion.
Crickets – 80 beers on tap just rocks….little expensive though. Thank God for student loans.
Orlando’s- ICE cold skooners + nuclear tortillini. Good times.
County Line- My gf actually waitressed out there and would bring me ribs, turkey, tons of BBQ. I was spoiled in my undergrad days. :)
Making me miss those days big time.
Midnight Scramble at Treasure Island
Had to be there…had to turn on the water when everyone was done.
1977-1982
I grew up in Lubbock, moving there with my family when I was just 2 years old in 1947, the year my youngest brother was born there in September of that year. I did not attend Tech until after my first marriage ended in divorce in January 1977, 30 years after arriving in Lubbock and 14 years after graduating from Monterey HS. I worked full time at Litton, in NE Lubbock off Loop 289 & (at that time) Quirt Ave. I really don’t recall the names of the bars or most of the restaurants. I was into rock as well as just getting into C&W. There was a bar by the RR tracks off Slide & 34th, I think that I went to, as well as one at the Loop & S. University Ave. I hit a bunch of the bars, including, I think, the Alamo club on the Strip out south. As far as eating places, I used to like Underwood’s until they closed, Stubb’s before he left for Austin, where I also moved to later on and went to his place again, often. Something most have done but not said here, the SP Fair was always fun to attend. They had some pretty good acts perform there. Shopping at United and Furr’s was always a must. Trying to get to all the games was a lot of fun, even if sitting by or behind the band. Lots of memories, good and bad left there. While I may not be able to move back to Lubbock, I will always call it “HOME”, and Texas Tech will always be “MY TEAM”.

Did you go to high school with Joe Ely & the Legendary Stardust Cowboy?
I remember Joe Ely telling the story about when he was at Monterey the guy who became the notorious Legendary Stardust Cowboy & released arguably the worst single in history, “Paralyzed”, was singing on the steps of the school and people were throwing pennies at him. Throwing them HARD.
2003-2008
Somehow managed to cram in two degrees in five years (150 hour program)
Chimy’s—loved doing a little day drinking at this place during the spring and summer. We would be hammered by six o clock and then take the party elsewhere.
Bash’s-’nuff said.
O Bar on 34th—what a great bar. Some of the best memories of my time in Lubbock were at that place. Too bad I can’t remember them!
Orlando’s on Q-I worked there as a cook while I was in school. After closing on Friday nights, all the closers would sit out front and drink draft beer(free) while the manager counted the till, and we would then head to one of the places above. It got so bad the owners installed an automated pouring system to deter us from drinking our “bonus pay”.
Honorable mention: Schooners (they really would serve anyone as previous posters have testiied), Bar PM (that place brought out the rowdiness), Recovery Room (but not on karaoke night), Chips (playing QB1 during Monday Night Football), random afterparties drinking Jameson or Maker’s straight out of the bottle till 5 in the morning and playing dominoes. Good times!!
