Dana Holgerson and oklahoma state
I really only have one question. Why didnt tuberville bring Dana back to tech? He said he wanted to keep the air raid in tact; what better way than bringing in Mike Leach's protege'. Is anybody else getting tired of OKst ripping everything off from Tech? Masked Rider (spirit rider) Raider red (pistol pete, stupid plastic mascot) and now.... they will be running TT signature offense. With Holgerson, and Harrell coaching up there it will look almost identicle to Mike Leach's Air raid. and we will now be running the prarie dog.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

we can let them have hance so they can really be tech
"uh, uh, well, uh yeah, I think the guys, uh played, uh pretty well in the second
half." The captains words, after uh, the insight bowl. You're the best Mike!
Probably
Wants to create an identity of his own while coaching here. Keeping the offense is probably enough for Tuberville to accept. I can’t say I balme him for wanting to bring in new blood with fresh ideas that can cultivate an already explosive offense. Coaches have large egos and want people to believe that they are what makes the machine run right. Agreeing to keep the Air Raid and implementing a run game will give Tuberville enough ownership to put his stamp on it along with a new defensive scheme. Can’t say I would do it any differently if it were me taking over.

I think some people just took the comment that keeping the air raid and adding tweaks meant keeping vestiges of Leach around. No idea why a coach would keep the old staff around, regardless. Ask what Ruffin’s first order of business was this week. It wasn’t keeping ECU’s old staff, that’s for sure.

Really hate...
To rain on your parade. Dont get me wrong, I really cant stand Xerox University for “borrowing” a bunch of the traditions they not only get off Texas Tech, yet other Universities (from what I have heard)…
One thing though Pistol Pete was first Introduced in 1958, but did not become the official mascot until 1984… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistol_Pete_(mascot)
Raider Red on the other hand was first introduced in 1971, 14 years after that of Pistol Pete… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raider_Red
Yes, both are wiki, yet are very correct. As for Raider Red following that of Pistol Pete (If anyone of the OSU supporters may argue)… Not true!!!!
Jim Gaspard, a member of the Saddle Tramps, created Raider Red from a drawing by the late Lubbock cartoonist Dirk West as an alternative to the Masked Rider… http://www.ttu.edu/traditions/raiderred.php
Just thought to make that small correction there ILIKECHEESE
I'd always wondered
if the Dirk West drawings were the basis for Raider Red. He was in his heyday about that time. Even so, it beats the devil out of that cheap plastic thing they use.
From what I’ve seen on the OSU forum over the last few years, the old-timers there say that their horse and rider were introduced by a Tech grad (and his Tech wife) working as band teacher there. It was introduced when they were looking for a mascot for their band. The old-timers also acknowledge that the guns up sign came well after ours.

From what I remember Dirk West's drawings did lead to the image we have of Raider Red.
And the drawings themselves spun off of Mr West’s thoughts of Yosemite Sam.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Warner Brothers sued Tech years ago over Raider Red & the Yosemite Sam copyright
They settled it out of court & WB allowed Tech to keep using it.
Oklahoma Tech
Yeah, I just wish there was some sort of copy right for this kind of thing, but there is noway out. Somebody mentioned earlier that Okie lite might change their name to Okie tech in a few years and from Okie lite, we should now start calling them Tech Lite. But I was wondering if Leach was still coach here, and they had hired Dana and Harrell to Okie lite wouldn’t that have been interesting? I mean Dana and Harrell had the inside track to Leach’s offense, so they would have too much information about us from hiring these two guys. Given this scenario is it better that we have a new coach and new staff? Ofcourse these doesn’t take away the fact the TT could have hired holgorsen as well.
I heard a few months ago that TTU had actually filed suit for trademark infringement over the guns up and masked rider. haven’t heard since how that’s progressed, but there is precedent for this type of suit in the 12th man (which was determined to be independently created) and the usage of “USC” more recently. Southern Cal won over South Carolina in that case.
I think Tubs realize he has a diamond in the rough with Sonny Cumbie. Keep in mind Sonny ran the Air Raid and coached in AFL — so he definitely has the experience.
The other thing to think about is Mike Gundy really going to give up the play calling to Dana. It’s Gundy’s offense—Dana will be there to install new looks.
Did Tech rip off their offense from Kentuckly and Oklahoma?
Calling the Air Raid Tech’s signature offense is ridiculous.
That is ridiculous....
Deep down you know what leach ran starting here in the aughts was unlike anything prior. Leach had bits and pieces at ou and uk…..but it wasn’t his show. You know better….or should.

Texas Monthly
Grab a copy of Texas Monthly and read the headlining article found in the September 2009 issue. You might recognize the man on the front cover as Mike Leach. In the article, it details Leach’s evolution as a college football coach. He gives credit where credit is due, but the article describes Leach’s own twists and tweaks to his offense. Kentucky and OK were his sandbox before bringing the Air Raid to Tech.
Didn't R.C.Slocum and the Aggies rip the Wrecking crew defense from University of Houston?
Old films of Melvin Robertson appear to say so. R.C. Slocum was his assistant. So, we did not rip the Air Raid, any more than you ripped the ‘Wrecking Crew’ Defense from Houston High. Lol! You are so juvenile sometimes.
Sometimes???

Just like an Aggie
So did you ever see Kentucky or Oklahoma gettting national attention for their offense. Kentucky made waves in the SEC but it was merely a scheme. Oklahoma ran it for a year, then started making changes. Ask anyone in the who is a fan of college football and they will tell you the AirRaid is Leach, more educated fans will tell you that its Hal Mumme then Mike Leach. But I dont see Mumme making much attention after the scandals he was relegated to the minor conferences. Since eveyone does major elemnts of it now, no one remembers the early years when it was just considered nuts. That tranformation from just a weirdo running a gimick offense to an actual system that gets respect and immitaded happened at Texas Tech

wait until you see
our new “Wreck’em Defense” in the fall beergut :) I know it sounds too familiar to our non-rivals.

Care to explain why this is ridiculous?

That would imply that a thought process was involved
And ‘thought process’ would imply that one was capable of rational thought to begin with.
There’s a reason that the tens of thousands of aggies fans and alums have nothing to do with the 12th man site.

I cant believe i forgot the stolen guns up!
I actually found that about raider red (it is still rediculous that both of their mascots and their hand sign are the same!) I can understand Tuberville not wanting to bring in/ keep on some of Leach’s closest friends (McNeil and Holgerson) I just thought it would have been great if he would have come back. On the bright side I think “wreckeraider” is right. Gundy is not about to had over the offense to Dana. Houston was a great offense this past year and I would hate to see it run (by anybody other than Tech) in the Big 12 where there is more talent. OSU has potential just like Tech to compete every year. I firmly believe if Dez Bryant played this season OSU would have won more games. Dez IMO should have beat Crab for the Belitnikoff in 2008. No disrespect to Crab.
I disagree with you on the second part of the observation about Dez Bryant. If Dez Bryant was so good, why didn’t he win anything last year? Why did okie lite have their back side whupped and got kicked all the way back from Lubbock stillwater in a heck of a spanking that we gave them? He was a non factor in that game, I don’t see how he would have beat Crab for that award.
Dez stats
rec yards avg long TD
2008 87 1480 17.0 80 19
Crab Stats
2008 97 1165 12.0 82 19
Fact is Dez outgained crab on less touches on a team that ran the ball alot more. Just my opinion, he was unanimous on the 2008 all-american team, and is project first round pick even though he only played four games in 2009

statistically
you have some valid points but what made Crabtree better was his body of work as a whole. He was a game changer and demonstrated better athleticism against the competition such as the UT game. Crabtree was an immediate star once he hit the field as a freshman. Wish we could have had one more year of that guy.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
I’m not real sure you could go wrong with either Dez or Crabtree. Just my thought. They were/are both stellar.
Dez was a guy you could shut down… see OSU @ Tech in 2008. It was very hard to shut Crabtree out and not allow a big play from him for a full game. Maybe that’s a product of differences in the system – Tech spreads the ball to more receivers so you can’t just key in on that one guy that must be stopped. Personally I like to think that Crabtree just worked harder and did what he needed to to make plays.
Also, Crabtree won the Belitnikoff (best WR) award each year he played for Tech (including 2008).
For a while before he commited to OSU
a lot of people wanted Dez B at TTU, he would have been an awesome player in the Air Raid…he was a player at OSU, a difference maker in a game.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Dez should have been at Tech
He should have been at Tech, but his visit was snowed out the weekend we beat KU in bball in 2007. Everyone said he would commit to the first place he visited and sure enough the next week he went to Okie Light and never looked back. If I remember correctly he was a grade risk and that is why many programs overlooked him

I think Dez got screwed by the NCAA
So don’t get me wrong. I’m not a hater by any means (except for OSU in general).
But the stat arguement is not the full picture.
A good number of those yards were gained in big statistical games agains UofH, Baylor and Iowa State.
Against UT, OU, Tech and Mizzou (all good teams that year), he has less than 100 yrds receiving in those games. And you also have to notice he had 5 games where he didn’t score. Not exactly consistent.
Now if you compare Crab, a couple of his biggest games were against UT and OSU. Against UT he has 127 and one famous TD. Against OSU (head to head so to speak vs Bryant) he only had 89 yards, but contributed 3 TD’s. Crab only had 2 games with no TD’s and that on a team with more receiving weapons compared to OSU.
Anyway, just a deeper look in the numbers and my opinion.

Let's post each players YAC, then we can have a debate...

Here to There
Holgerson was the topic of this post, but since we have ventured to Crab v Bryant, I feel I must weigh in.
1. Both are incredible talents
2. Both have been highly touted
3. Both have posted huge numbers
4. I would want both recieving the ball for my team, as long as they did not bring along the blundering idiots that advised, dinned, or sought training from(D. Sanders,Irving, and Parker) aka winkin, blinkin, and nod
