Recruiting on the . . . :: Updating the Ledger
Recruiting on the . . . ; I Need a New Meme: Recruiting on the High Seas was obviously in reference to Captain Mike Leach, but since the powers that be decided that he didn't need to be charge of the football program, I feel like I need a new meme for Tommy Tuberville. I'm not really an idea sort of guy, but I'll take suggestions in the comments. And yes, at some point I'm going to change the DTN headline, but I'm being patient.
New Commits: I haven't had the time to do full write-ups on the two new commitments, but as always, I'll do my best to link to as much information as possible.

Per LAJ's Don Williams, Calhoun committed on Friday and he seems to have replaced the de-commitment of Denton Simek (more on that below). Calhoun has incredible size and in reviewing his film, the one thing that I noticed consistently was that Calhoun was a step slow getting off of the ball on almost every play. At first I thought that he couldn't go the entire film being a step slow, but that was the case. It's not a fatal flaw and you'd certainly rather have a guy with incredible size and pretty good athleticism, as getting off of the snap is something that's correctable. Calhoun is just dominating his high school counterparts and he appears to be athletic enough to keep with quicker defensive ends, so his film isn't too revealing. I will say that Calhoun appears to be quite strong physically.

Carmical's commitment comes as a bit of a surprise. LAJ's Don Williams reported that Carmical isn't sure how head coach Tommy Tuberville or defensive coordinator James Willis even found him. Carmical appeared to be sort of a jack-of-all-trades for his high school team, which won a state title last year. The only video I could find of Carmical was his interview after the championship game where he talks about running the triple-option, as the quarterback, and recruiting towards the end of the video. Apparently Carmical will play linebacker for Texas Tech:
“I was kind of a versatile player here, and part of the trouble seemed to be that when I went to camp they didn’t really know where to put me,’’ he said.
Snip.
“I’m really excited about playing linebacker under coach Willis and coach Tuberville,’’ Carmical said. “Coach Tuberville coached linebackers for 19 years before he got in the head-coaching part, so this is exciting.’’
Carmical's commitment is a classic case of two sides of the recruiting argument. You'll have one side that will claim that Carmical is Wes Welker Part II and that just because he was over-looked by almost every major school doesn't mean a thing. The other argument would be that Tuberville is failing miserably as Texas Tech recently had de-commitments and now has the commitment of a player that hasn't even been rated by either Scout or ESPN. The truth is that there are players that are still over-looked, even in today's day and age. Carmical has the same measurables as LB Sam Fehoko coming out of high school. I would guess that Carmical has pretty good wheels as he played quarterback for a triple-option team. Again, Willis and Tuberville are banking on Carmical's potential and we'll just have to wait and see as to what this means.
Much, much more on recruiting, including the de-commitments and the current commitment list.
De-Commitment List: I think it might be a bit easier to start with the actual de-commitments rather than who's committed. When we last checked in on recruiting, Brazoswood DE Dartwan Bush committed to Texas Tech (which by the way, I think that Bush looks like a great fit for the 3-4). At that time, the Red Raiders had 25 commitments. Since Leach's termination, there have been a handful of de-commitments, some of which have actually been confirmed through the press and others by just using some logic and what available free information there is. In any event, here's the current group that I believe have actually de-committed:
De-Commits:
RB Aaron Spikes
OL Denton Simek
DE Kedrick Dial
LB Fred Harvey
That list doesn't address the fact that I think Texas Tech still has some questions regarding some of current commits as they are still looking elsewhere, so put this group of players in the question marks list and hope like heck that they sign in two weeks:
Question Marks:
WR Kadron Boone (looking at LSU and Georgia)
OL Javius Townsend (looking at Oklahoma St.)
DE Scott Smith (although he's signed his LOI, he apparently has not enrolled in classes)
DB Tre`Vante Porter (looking at Arizona)
As an aside, WR James Wright committed to LSU over the weekend, and this may narrow Boone's choices to either Georgia or Texas Tech. If I've missed anyone on either list, let me know, but I think for now, this is a pretty solid list of who's in and who's out.
I also wanted to update a few more notes around the interwebs in that Southlake Carroll DE Jackson Richards stated that he's committed to Texas Tech and that LB Zachary Winbush (more on Winbush below) is solid on Texas Tech, per the title to this Scout article.
Current Commitment List: I typically like looking at recruiting lists in terms of position rather than stars or some other method of ranking. If you need more information on any of these players, then feel free to check out the sidebar on the left of the DTN home page for Rivals, Scout and ESPN profiles. Typically, the ESPN profiles have free video of each of these players so that may be a good place to start. In any event, as of right now, this is a pretty good class and most, if not all of these players, sans the question marks listed above, has re-confirmed their commitment to Texas Tech.
| Position | Commitment |
| QB | Scotty Young (6-3/185) |
| RB | Delans Griffin (5-10/180) |
| WR | Shawn Corker (6-1/189) Kadron Boone (6-1/197) Ben McRoy (5-9/165) |
| OL | Beau Carpenter (6-7/260) James Polk (6-7/290) Javius Townsend (6-2/300) Eric Lawson (6-6/320) |
| DL | Jackson Richards (6-4/240) Coby Coleman (6-3/280) Lawrence Rumph (6-4/270) Donald Langley (6-2/295) Scott Smith (6-7/275) Dartwan Bush (6-1/245) |
| LB | Zac Winbush (6-2/200) Joe Carmical (6-2/225) |
| DB | Desmond Martin (6-0/173) Russell Polk (5-11/200) Brandon Smith (6-1/175) Urell Johnson (6-0/180) Tre'Vante Porter (6-1/185) |
What's Next: These are just guesses, but assuming that this group actually commits to Texas Tech, I think it's safe to assume that there's still going to be some work to get done. Namely, if Tuberville wants to continue his switch to the 3-4 defense, then I think he's got to get some more linebackers. Tuberville apparently makes a living getting faster players on defense, which means that you could see some of these players switching positions once they arrive on campus.
As an aside, and I wasn't real sure where to put this note, but it appears that California RB/ATH Lucky Radley (5-9/185) (Rivals, ESPN and Scout) will be taking a visit to Texas Tech after he was offered a scholarship on Saturday night. Radley is listed from a position standpoint from running back, to safety to linebacker, which perhaps bolsters the thought that Tuberville wants projectable athletes that he can mold into various positions.
The candidates for a position switch, at least in my mind are Russell Polk and the aforementioned Dartwan Bush. Polk looks to have some pretty good size, already at 200 pounds. With 4.5 speed in the 40, he seems like a natural fit to lose a little bit of 40 time to pack on a good 10 to 15 pounds to be able to play linebacker. Polk will redshirt and I think that will give the staff plenty of time to make a decision on what to do with Polk. Regarding Bush, I absolutely love his production. He's got issues regarding his measurables (i.e. he's not tall enough) he produces on the field. With the switch to a 3-4 defense, Bush seems like the perfect outside linebacker.
If those two players can play some sort of linebacker position in the future, then I'm less worried that Winbush is the only linebacker commitment (other than the newly committed Carmical). I don't think it's any secret that recruiting along the defensive line is the toughest position to recruit, and there a quite a few projectable athletes that could prove to be good players in the future. I think it's much easier to find an athlete and convert said athlete to a linebacker spot, but it's more difficult to find players with size and convert that player to defensive tackle or defensive end.
Immediate Needs: The situation involving Scott Smith, who signed his letter of intent, but has not enrolled in classes is a bit disconcerting. Smith has perfect size to play defensive end in the 3-4 and the defensive end position is a position of true need with this team. With that being said, it was thought that Smith would be with the team for spring practice, but now that's not the case. If Smith decides to play somewhere else, he either has to appeal to the NCAA to retract the LOI he signed or transfer, sit out all of next year, and then have one year of eligibility left. It doesn't make sense for Smith to go the second route, but I've been plenty wrong before.
Langley and Rumph are two additional JUCO players who I suppose could play somewhere along the defensive line. Again, I have no idea as to how quick they actually are and if they played defensive tackle of defensive end at their respective JUCO's, but again, this team is fairly desperate for some defensive ends with size, and other than Pearlie Graves, there may not be many options. Keep in mind that typical 3-4 defensive ends are pretty darned big, for example, the Dallas Cowboys defensive ends, Igor Olshansky and Marcus Spears are in the 6-4/300 range, and the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive ends, Travis Kirschke and Brett Keisel, are also in that range. I know it's a tough comparison between the NFL and college, but I think at the very least, you're talking about players that are bigger than the typical college 4-3 defensive end, a best example are this past year's defensive ends, Brandon Sharpe and Daniel Howard, both around 6-3/240. I think it would be safe to assume the the starting defensive ends next year will be closer to 270 rather than 240.

Recruiting on the River?
Man, am I ever looking forward to Feb 3rd. I really hope we can keep most of the guys still on the fence. Thanks for the great write-up.
How about....
Recruiting…..if it’s ok with Hance.

Recruiting With The Double T
or more simple: Double TT Recruiting
I kind of like the double meaning….
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
That's not bad.
At least Seth won’t have to worry about changing it every time there’s a coaching change!

If you want to play around with our coach’s “Gambler” nickname: Newcomers to the Card Table.
If you don’t want to get in too deep with a newbie and maybe have to think too hard every few years about a new recruiting tag line: Red Raider Recruiting.
agree 100%
We continue to hear about this river boat gambler style but I bet we don’t see:
1. Going for it on 4th down inside our own territory at least 1 time a week.
2. Going for it on 4th and goal from the 1 with a 5 point lead in the 4th quarter.
3. Onside kicks and fake kneel downs.
4. Calling time out to score, again.
5. Passing with one minute left and a 28 point lead.
Not trying to re-has any ML vs. TT talk but will can he really be considered a gambler after what we’ve grown accustomed to? It’s going to be like retiring from the World Series of Poker and playing Go Fish with the kids.

Excited about Carmical
Always felt like one of the best places to find quality defensive backs and linebackers were lower tier HS quarterbacks. Ususall these type of schools have their best player with the most touches and playing both ways. While all HS QB’s can go D1 as a QB, they still usually would have the talent for another position. Good find.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
could be
another diamond player that was overlooked. Leach always had the midas touch for sniffing those guys out. Maybe Tuberville has those tendancies as well. I think this kid will be a worker for Tech and give it all he has.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Carmical led his team as qb and lb to the Arkansas 5A State Championship and an undefeated season.
I have a lot of respect for that as an hs program accomplishment.
I also take comfort in the notion that the first TT recruit is a linebacker for the DC’s (who coached linebackers at his last assignment) first recruit. If Willis is a good as his reputation, this kid is a good football player, and will be expected to be a very good college linebacker.
HIgh hopes !!

Question
Do we have a place kicker in waiting when Matt Williams graduates? I’m sure there will be walk ons but I was wondering if a kicker was worth going after now rather than later.
Perhaps we should talk to the people at Lynnwood townhomes to see who they suggest.
"Life's a garden, dig it."
Also I'm not always impressed by stars
There is a lot more to look at in a player than what someone else thinks. To me starts are like the polls, is a collection of opinions by sports writers, who we all know only drink coffe and discuss with each other. The stars guys are the same ones who rated USC in the top five for 2009
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
The stars given are in direct correlation to the reputation of the colleges recruiting the kid. That’s it. If any of the Big Five aren’t recruiting you (Texas, USC, Florida, Notre Dame and OU) then you can’t be a 5-Star or 4-Star (not literally, of course, but you get the drift).
You notice some kids go from 2-Star to 3-Star or 3-Star to 4-Star simply because XYZ University got intererested.
The ranking system is slightly less credible than the national team ranking system. If a Carmical spent his summer in any way other than going to every skill/evaluation camp, there is little chance of him being rated or getting much attention. A parent you drop some coin, subscribe to a recruiting service (to assemble a highlight reel, spread some word, and get some camp invitations), and send lil’ Johnny to a few summer camps before his junionr and senior years . . . voila! He’s now on the scouting service radar.

"Rollin on the Red River".....
The “Tech guys” on 104.3 seemed to say that Scott Smith is having some of his own personal trouble in Hawaii and even without the Pirate gone then Scott would still be in Hawaii. I don’t know if it is legal or not but it seemed that way, but maybe not. So I just hope he makes it here in the summer. Also, they seemed to feel his waiver to transfer would not be accepted so it seems he has punched his ticket on the Riverboat and I think we need him next year. I also think it is important to remember what TT said about his defense and that is that he likes to give several fronts and his goal is 70-30% 3/4 over 4/3 but it will take time and players to get to the true 3/4 so let’s see if they transition into it. Lastly, if TTech can keep the class that we have now largely intact and add a few folks on the edges( like carmichael) then I think T2 & Willis have done a very good job. Wreck’Em Tech
I would love to see Smith here. It seems to me that he either plays at Tech or is largely giving up on football (considering he’s already muffed at one D1 program, spent 2 years of eligibility at JUCO, and now sacrificed an off-season). At some point, you really start questioning his desire to play . . . and maybe TT saw that as soon as they talked.
I would like to see...
this guy make it to Tech. He has great size and speed for the DE spot. Not sure why the hell he’s not in class yet? My best guess tells me he’s not going to be on this team or he would be here come rain or snow.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Thank You, techgolf44 for the 104.3 input.
That makes sense. Yes, he did apply for the waiver…he like a lot of people may have reacted too soon, perhaps as a plan B…but prudently.
Smith is probably smart enough to know that he may have a future beyond college in football…he knows that he can get that only if he excells on the field…he knows that he needed to enroll in college. I wonder if he has considered withdrawing the waiver request or if he has and it is not reported…..
I am willing to give the man the benefit of any doubt that something else is likely happening. I hope so and I hope it is something that he can get through and be on campus as soon has he can.
I also applaude that you show there has to be some thinking about TT’s stated goal to play more 3-4 than 4-3. In Tuberville’s earlier comments, he pointed to that thought directly, he said something to the effect that his current use of the term 3-4 is more to point out that that is what he will recruit…so I agree that we will be smarter to expect more 4-3 this season that 30%.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
It's important to note . . .
that a few of the de-commitments weren’t necessarily the recruits’ choice. For example, Harvey was being recruited by Bama until Willis had the in-person visit; not too hard to see why he dropped off the list so quickly here. I understand something similar went on with lil’ Fehoko; he had stars but I don’t think he had the height they were looking for. Similar story on Spikes; he de-committed after discussing his role and it was mutually agreed that a change might be good. As for Simek, he fell from grace after he stated that Tech was his back-up plan. It is easy to dismiss a recruit’s de-commit as the recruit’s choice, but the coaching staff has a say in the process as well.
Academic qualification . . .
is going to be a factor in ultimately judging our class. There is one 4-star and two 3-star’s that haven’t yet qualified. Fortunately, they are spread across different positions and we have a pretty solid academic support system in place.
Academics Must remain a priority
We once recruited and signed an oustanding running back by the name of Domenic Rhodes……….he could not get in……….it happens, but why waste the time and money on someone that can do the school work? Personally I would rather find someone we can count on in the classroom and DEVELOP as a player. If we can get both – all the better.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
I agree . . .
but I think you can also take a kid and DEVELOP them into a student. Plenty of these kids have the ability to succeed in the classroom but haven’t been provided the guidance or resources. Let’s face it; we all had to develop our study habits and apply self-discipline and self-motivation to get our degrees. To your point, the coaches have to evaluate their academic skills to a certain degree . . . and that is an attribute far more difficult to assess than their athletic abilities.
Love...
recruiting…if it’s okay with Hance. Also like recruiting on the riverboat.
Thanks for not changing the tagline yet, Seth. I’m not ready to see “find your inner pirate” go away yet. Tuberville’s slogan will reveal itself in time.
Recruiting on the high plains-my suggestion
Im confident in saying that we will sign all our on-the-fence guys come feb.3. i hope whatever ails smith gets sorted out and he’s here come fall. Carmical is very intriguing. I think he has great upside. He used to play in a triple option like GT uses, so he can run, give a hit on a DB, and really fight for those tough yards. Since he also to used to be a QB, maybe see a lil wildcat? :D Im liking how our class has shook out so far. I would still like to see Porter in scarlett and black come fall.
For the recruiting, something like…
“Recruiting Red Raiders to the Riverboat”
For now, a new tagline should be something like…
“Double T Nation…We’re going to keep the Air Raid…(with wrinkles)”
if we want to try and get past Leach. I think this has been TT’s most quoted and scrutinized comment thus far.
That's just not right.

But you’ve gotta keep the inner pirate headline. I have a vested interest in this- lots of pirate crap around my house now that I don’t want to get rid of.
An Ol’ Miss fan asked me what a “Red Raider” is at the Cotton Bowl and I really didn’t have an answer. The pirate theme helped define that. Raider, Pirate, Zorro, Yosemite Sam, The Joker. They all kinda tie together.

We used to be the Matadors
Then some radio guys started calling us the Red Raiders because of some bright red uniforms we got. Seems like it would take more than that to get the school to change names, but apparently not. I always assumed Raiders referred to the old term for marauders on horseback, whether they were Army or outlaws.
The fact that we still use Matadors in the school song and more recently inscribed it into our new end zone wall probably confuses lots of folks. Add pirates to the mix and it seems we don’t have a big fixation on names. It’s our independent, unpredictable, in-your-face nature that seems to be our identity rather than a mascot name. Suits me.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Matadors
When Texas Technological Clooege changed the mascot from the Matadors, they wanted a name synonymous with the area. As a result, they drew from the old calvary command headed by Col. William (I think) MacKenzie-the park is named after him. His group hunted out “dangerous” Indians and arrested or killed them. They were called “Mackenzie’s Raiders”. So, by putting the colors to that name, they came up with “Red Raiders”.
Since we have moved on from Th’ Cap’n to Th’ Gambler, the line might need to reflect that. Although, there probably was never a more logical name for Leach than The Gambler, it might become an easy transition from Pirate to Gambler and still maintain some form of recognition of what Leach has done to establish this offense. So, maybe something like:
""You’ve got to know when to gamble"………
The recruits would become our “Gambler’s Stash”………
How about it? Sound good?.

We should probably distance ourselves from Col. McKenzie
From what I have read, he basically chased the local indian population into Palo Duro Canyon and starved them to death. Just what I read or was told in one of my history classes, I could be wrong.

You’re right about Col. MacKenzie, except his name was Ranald MacKenzie. And he did kill those Indians in Palo Duro Canyon. One of my professors actually wrote a book about him and made him out to be a great military mind and hero. It’s all about whose view you take. Not taht any of this has to do with anything. People don’t come to DTN to read about 19th Century war heroes! ;)

Slight correction ... or "alternative history" of origin of 'Red Raiders'
On its Web site (texastech.cstv.com/trads/text-m-fb-atoz… Texas Tech describes its nickname this way:
“The first athletic teams became known as the Matadors … thanks to the head coach’s wife. Mrs. Ewing Young Freeland preferred Matadors because of the Spanish architectural influence on campus. The college colors of scarlet and black and team name of Matadors were adopted by students on March 15, 1926, during a convocation. The teams remained as Matadors until 1936 when Red Raiders was adopted.
“The name-change from Matadors to Red Raiders came from Lubbock Avalanche-Journal sports writer Collier Parrish, reflecting on their red uniforms and a strong season. Covering a football game in 1932, he wrote: ‘The Red Raiders from Texas Tech, terror of the Southwest this year, swooped in the New Mexico University camp today.’ The name caught on and by 1936, the Matadors had faded into history, replaced by the Red Raiders.”

Here is the link to Col. Ranald S. MacKenzie. While his raiders may not be the namesake of our beloved Red Raiders, the story of his experiences certainly resemble the reason Collier Parrish uses for naming them Red Raiders.

I like Recruiting on the High Plains
And I would like to give Tuberville the nickname, The “High Plains Drifter”.
Is that the movie where...
Clint Eastwood paints the whole town “red?” and they proceed to slaughter the gang of invading bandits?
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Or is that the one where he plays the ‘minister’ who saves the mining camp from the hydraulic mining baron?

High Plains Drifter is definitely the one where the town is painted red and he goes psycho like only Eastwood can, it is in a mining town as well though.
Eastwood is literally the devil in that movie
That’s what I remember. I’m not ready to call Tuberville the devil until he has us scoring only 10 points a game.
Then I’ll be angry.

Red Raiders
The term Red Raiders was used by the settlers around San Antonio to describe the Comanche indians of central and west Texas. This tribe liked to plunder the settlements of other indians and settlers and return to the safety of west Texas (1700-1800s).
Not sayin’ that that’s what was intended, but that’s where the term comes from.
i beg to differ..........
The third head coach of the Texas Tech Matadors, Pete Cawthon, driven to make his team into a national powerhouse and distinguish them from all comers, secured a loan from his father-in-law to purchase new uniforms for the team. In that dat the conventional college football uniform for anywhere was tan canvas pants and usually white jerseys. Coach Cawthon purchased RED SATIN uniforms out of Dallas, went on to a 10-1 regular season beating teams from coast to coast. The new boys of the day labled the Matadors, the Red Raiders.

I know I've said this before, but when my Dad was at Tech....
‘50-’56 interrupted by the Korean War, he said the Red Raider was an aloof (sp), stealthy, demon-type figure, scary as hell, nothing what you’d think of as Raider Red, but more like the last Dude Masked Rider we had X’s 10. (without the cool stache)
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
I’m a big Clint Eastwood fan and anything in that genre would be great. “Texas Hold’Em” is certainly invogue, so anything referencing that as well would be great! I also like the “death card” ( an ace of spades with a skull and crossbones in the middle).

I have many leather-bound books and my coaching office smells of mahogany.

I came across something on Rivals (not a paying member so just a brief title) but can anybody substantiate the report that he has switched his commit to Okie State?

So, the Carmical kid goes from something like a 40 and a two star to a 70 and a three star…Tech has pull now : )

It goes something like this...
Who? Oh, yeah, maybe we ought to take a closer look.
There is a element of who is recruiting a player, we know the services cannot see every player…I wonder the percentage that they actually personally evaluate.
The evaluations do take on a sense of popularity…mostly in the context of a player’s services being in demand.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Being on demand
Will get them more stars only if the “big boys” are doing the recruiting. The rest of the schools might get a recruit on the map by going after him, but the real good ranking only comes if UF, OU, UT, ND, PS, SC, etc. make attempts to sign a kid.

Townsend Gone
To Okie State per ESPN ticker during the KU/Mizzou basketball game. Scratch that one off the list.
I Say...
Keep the “You’ve got to find your Inner Pirate” headline until Tuberville gets his first quality win against a legit opponent like SMU (who slaughtered Nevada in their bowl game this season) here at home in Jones Stadium to mark his first game as Tech’s head coach.
If Tuberville pulls off a good victory against June Jones SMU squad, then I think it is okay to change the title. But until then, I think it is best to take the safe route and just wait for the end results of the first game of the 2010 season b/c no one can prove that Tuberville is REALLY going to take Tech to the next level.
The head coaching change does have the potential to implode and ruin our program if Tuberville fails during his first season here at Tech, and doesn’t back up his words with some good results on the field.
How about.

Recruiting in Raider-ville
Sorry I’m late to the ballgame here, been tied up with that time sucking commitment called J-O-B. Raiderville has nice alliteration and ties in Tuberville’s name. It’s classy and understated, two hallmarks of the Red Raider Nation. HA! ;-)
Also – Tubs better hold another women’s clinic, because I’m not changing my profile pic until I get a photo with the new hc. Just sayin.
