Javius Townsend De-commits

Looks like we just lost another recruit.  This same info was posted in the comments of the Recruiting article, but it was a little hidden in with everything else.

Date: Jan 25, 2010

The talk was Oklahoma State and offensive line coach Joe Wickline wanted to add one more offensive lineman to the 2010 recruiting class. Mission accomplished as Javius Townsend of James Madison High School in Dallas called Monday afternoon and let us know he has changed his status, switching from Texas Texas to Oklahoma State.

Ouch ! I don't like losing Townsend to OSU

They have a good looking class assembled…28 commits…I wonder how it will shake out.

Townsend joins a class of 6 OL !!!

Only thing I don’t know is if the recruits realize what they are getting into at OSU. WIth Gundy and Holgorsen both wanting to call plays, their existing OC refusing to leave (nor has he been told to leave yet), I would be hard pressed to think that the situation and the politics there are not among the worst in the Big XII and one can see from a mile away that a trouble is brewing there, I am not sure why recruits would want to ruin their career by jumping into that mess, but a couple of them have.

by jef on Jan 25, 2010 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

OSU may have a mess but...

Here’s what recruits are seeing in Lubbock:
Fire the face of the program 3 days before his 10th bowl game, then make the interim head coach (who all the players love) dance and beg for the job only to be fired later, then try and give the job to the Baylor coach, who turned them down, then announce on National TV that the school president is in Pasadena to interview the Alabama DC (but he was really there to celebrate his mom’s birthday), and then finally give the job to a guy who’s been out of coaching for a year and has been throwing his name in the hat for every opening in America. I might think things look pretty good in Stillwater too…

I don’t think the situation is as bad as that, because we have replaced him with an equally (if not better) accomplished coach. But I can see where you are going, this might be the sales pitch our rivals are giving them to swing them their way but creating fear and uncertainty among the recruits by talking trash about our program. Actually, there are only two schools that are engaging in this type of legal but unethical behavior: Okie Lite and Baylor. And I am not surprised because both have classless people incharge of their programs, who prefer to steal recruits by telling lies instead of getting their asses out to go and recruit some players. So, maybe we will lose a few recruits this year to these schools, but I feel sorry for these recruits that are buying into their lies.

You are saying you like where we are

The fact is that how we got here is an episode of cops and Jerry springer combined….we are open to this.

Oh no! I hate where we are, but the situation isn’t so terrible that the recruits wouldn’t want to be with us. Tuberville is a great coach and he will atleast maintain the 8 or 9 win seasons that we have gotten used to with Leach, so why are some of our recruits waivering from positions which are either going to see great coaching (defense for example) or where situations have not changed since Leach’s departure (O Line for example)? That’s where I think the ‘Tech is doomed’ pitch that our rivals (Okie lite and Baylor for example) are using, is causing ambiguity and apprehension among a few of our recruits. They are believing these lies and choosing boone pickens state or Waco U as their schools

by jef on Jan 25, 2010 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

I can’t help but speculate about that assumption that Tuberville will automatically give us an 8 or 9 win season. The limited time Tuberville did play around with a spread offense he failed miserably with a losing season.

I say wait until you see the man coach on the field against SMU next season. Then people can judge. But until then we as fans can do nothing but wait. We can support Tuberville but I believe making assumptions that he is going to bring Tech to the next level simply b/c he says it in his interviews is a bit crazy.

Actions speak louder than words, and so far Tuberville has not coached a single game here at Tech. So I digress that I will wait before I embrace him.

Tech Administrators pulled alot of cahones firing a son of a gun coach like Mike Leach, and they really are playing Russian Roulette with themselves. If Tuberville succeeds and gets an 8+win season, then Administrators are going to be wiping their brows full of nervous sweat. But if Tuberville fails…well I guess those Administrators are going to figuratively screw themselves over b/c I know the fans aren’t going to be too pleased with those results. That’s for sure.

by SkyBlade on Jan 26, 2010 12:49 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

My point is you can’t just throw 8 or 9 wins down for next year…..too much has changed.

Not the issue here

I am not sure that this is a whether Tuberville can win debate, it’s about our rivals giving false pitches to our recruits to steal them away. Yes, we have had a coaching change, but we have hired a damn good coach, so there might be some transition worries, however it does not call for the ‘tech is doomed’ frenzy speech that okie lite and baylor admin and coaches have been using to steal our recruits

My point is

The successful coach gets canned and all bets are off. We hope to keep recruits and we hope to win 8 or 9. When the drama goes down that just did…..other schools will use it to their advantage changing 18 year old minds.

we got very LUCKY to sign a big name coach like Tubs after this whole mess and I’m still not sure that LUCKY is the right word. Still have a bad taste in my mouth.

I Agree

Tuberville and Willis will certainly field a better defense than we have had in the past. Getting Brown and recently appointing Cumbie both are evidence to Tuberville maintaining the Air Raid and also shores up recruiting and, in the future, expands the geography of recruiting. Nothing helps a recruiting program better than winning. With the good players returning, I believe the 8-9 wins next year are a good assumption. Let me go out on a limb and say 10 wins next year. Regardless of how we arrived, the coaching team in place now has stabilized a bad situation and is better than I thought when Leach was fired.

By the way, what happened to your adament belief from a prior post that our recruiting class would remain intact because of TT? "Trouble brewing?…..jumping into a mess????…." That is exactly what has happened to our program. Let’s see now, by my count, we are down 5 recruits. We are starting to bring in kids that had NO prior offers…hummmmm…

Those Thieves!

Boone Pickens and the chief of thieves and the rest of okie lite have only one mission, to steal everything from Texas Tech, in their persistent obsession to become the tech lite. If there is one school i dislike after the aggies, it’s the Xerox State

by jef on Jan 25, 2010 5:22 PM CST reply actions

At least OSU doesn’t do stupid things on the field like their rival counterpart. This is why I show no respect for OU, UT, or A&M alike. They all have tendencies to do stuff like this. I have not seen OSU do anything like that yet so they gain my respect above those other 3 schools.

by SkyBlade on Jan 26, 2010 1:11 AM CST up reply actions

But they steal traditions,

and I will never forget OSU fans standing outside of the student entrance here at Tech before the game in ’08 jeering students as we filed in. They are right up there with them IMO. Actually….. I have to say that UT, OU, and OSU people are worse than the aggies of late. It may be from multiple losing seasons, but most aggies have backed off a little on the bad sportsmanship to Tech. Never thought I would say that… wow. I still severely dislike them though haha

by RdrPwr on Jan 26, 2010 1:17 AM CST up reply actions

They are worse. They go behind your back and cheat like thieves.

Stolen our traditions, infact a few years back they tried to steal something from our IT department, but we were able to keep it because there was some copyright on it, and because they have failed to recruit (or their recruits are kind of useless now, since they have decided to change their offense by their boss’s order) they have tried to steal our committed recruits away. With BP around, I hope the NCAA keeps a watch on this school for NCAA violations in the near future.

For the most part

I feel like this class is being held together fairly well. I would expect a few to fall off the vine but that happens even under normal situations. I have to give Tuberville credit for keeping the major recruits in the fold for now. Hopefully we don’t see any more drop off and add a couple of more surprises. So far not too bad IMO.

Mainly Baylor and Okie Lite are engage in this type of practice I think. By talking trash about our program, and creating a fear psychosis and uncertainty among recruits by pitching lies. I won’t at all be surprised actually if there is some sort of a melt down at okie lite. And Briles has always seemed like a snake to me.

I’m thinking T. Boone got on the horn and told the boys in Stillwater to totally shake things up or the Bank of Pickens was going on a short holiday. The program up there seems to be making panic moves. They will be structured in a totally different way next year, as well as engaging in what could be negative recruiting (legal but ugly). You have no choice when what you are selling is an inferior product.

reality check

seems to me a lot of the Tech “faithful”, including myself initially, were on the Tech is doomed bandwagon. The “news” coverage also didn’t really help either. There are still people on DTN that seem somewhat on the Tech is doomed wagon. Seems natural that some recruits would be too. i figure the other schools are just taking advantage of the situation and I would hope Tech would do the same given a similar situation at some other big 12 school…as unlikely it is that such a situation would occur.

I am hopeful for next year

But also have enough life experience to know this much change means we aren’t the same animal we were last year…so more unknown. Putting quote marks around faithful….ok.

I don’t think we’re doomed to be bad. I think we’re doomed to be maybe a little less exciting than we were previously. That’s bound to happen when you lose the craziest coach in the country – a guy who isn’t afraid to go against conventional wisdom and the past and innovate on the field. We’ll be a solid program next year, we’ll just be a little bit more like everyone else.

If I was a recruit and I saw Mike Leach out, Tommy Tubes in, I’d pretty much consider that a Potts for Sheffield (or Sheffield for Potts, if you wish) move. They’re both really good coaches that would be great to play for, but each has his own style and schtick. And the rest of the school is still exactly the same thing they were selling you before.

by merrik on Jan 27, 2010 12:32 AM CST up reply actions

Please don't use Potts/Sheffield as a metaphor for the coaching change

Obviously Leach would be Shefield (mr. excitement), making Tubberville Potts. I want to like Tubberville. I really do. But if he’s the Potts in this equation, I’m going to wind up hating his guts. No more Potts please.

by mbrown603 on Jan 27, 2010 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

I hope Sticks wins the spot next year.

Having Potts around as a backup in that case would be a blessing compared to the lack of competent depth at the position at some schools (see: Texas). That’s all I’m trying to say: both are capable and qualified for the job, and to an outsider who may not be emotionally attached to either of them you might not feel the uncertainty you might if we had hired say a Sonny Dykes or other unproven quantity.

This: And the rest of the school is still exactly the same thing they were selling you before.

Believe it or not, the school itself (classes/majors, facilities, bar scene, town, campus vibe, coeds…)…all that stuff matters. I know it mattered to me quite a bit. So while a new coach may be a bad thing for some of the recruits – and let’s face it, we don’t know what Tuberville may have said to some of these kids to make them reconsider…he may have encouraged one or two of them to look elsewhere – to some it won’t matter quite as much.

I am optimistic until I have reason to believe otherwise. i.e. the product on the field and the wins and losses will determine my attitude moving forward.

As for this year’s class…well, we may not finish Top 25, but when have we ever? If Tuberville is half the coach I think he is, then we’ll still have a guy to coach ’em up.

We can’t say that TT tried the spread at Auburn and failed so he is going to fail here also. You have to remember that he tried the spread at Auburn with a totally different type of offense than he was handed here at Tech. He was handed a group of players that is already highly successful at the spread so he is already way ahead of where he was at Auburn when he tried it there. He tried to turn a running team into a spread offense and was not given the chance to recruit they kind of team he needed to be successful. I am going to give him a chance and be optomistic this fall. He already has the players in place to be successful and he is getting to coach the type of offense he wants to coach. Is it fall yet?

by kmbeals on Jan 28, 2010 1:12 PM CST reply actions

Tuberville will be judged on how the offense performs compared to past seasons

If Tech is not one of the top 5 teams in Division 1 for offense, then his tinkering with what he inherited did more harm than good. We’ll see how it goes.

Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.
