Recruiting on the High Plains :: A Meme for the Day
Test: Just testing out the meme. Not permanent, just taking it for a test spin.
Parade All-American: If there was ever a selling point for a receiver, perhaps a receiver out of Florida, it might not be a bad idea that the same quarterback that you'd probably end up playing alongside was just named a Parade All-American. Commit Scotty Young was named one of seven quarterbacks named to this honor and DMN's Adam Boedecker talked with Young's high school coach, Joey Florence:
"More than anything else it’s humility," Florence said. "Scotty’s been well-grounded. That helps you at that position [quarterback] because there’s so much pressure that goes with that. He’s very humble and that’s a key attribute at that position." Congrats Scotty! "[ The West Virginia visit] went pretty good," said Boone. "It was better than I thought, man. I had a pretty good time talking with players and coaches. Right now, I am still committed to Texas Tech. I never decommitted. I just plan on taking this last visit to LSU this weekend and come home and talk about things with my family. After that, whatever happens, happens," Pound it real hard for more on recent Arkansas commit LB Joe Carmical, everyone's favorite writer Dennis Dodd ranks the coaching hires, and Texas recruiting lists.
College 3-4 Defenses: I was pointed to a criticism on RP.com regarding my assumption the other morning as to the potential size of the 3-4 defensive ends, especially in the college game. I thought that Tuberville would want defensive ends closer to 270 than 240, which was the approximate size of Daniel Howard and Brandon Sharpe. To address my critics, I often get up at 4:30 a.m. to put these notes together and sometimes I run out of time. Second, I was somewhat at a loss for teams than run a 3-4 defense the other morning, but I had been considering it since then and the two that came to mind are Alabama and Virginia. I couldn't find either of these teams official depth charts, but each of these teams Rivals sites had depth charts and the sizes of the starting defensive ends for both of these teams are as follows: 6-5/290; 6-4/287; 6-2/290; and 6-7/270. I'm sure there are other examples out there, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that the defensive ends will be much bigger. I also didn't think that assumption needed to be proven, but whatever.
Just a Note: This came up in my Google News search this morning and apparently Florida DT Michael Dozier (Rivals, Scout, and ESPN) will be visiting this week.
Boone to Decide on Signing Day: ESPN's Gerry Hamilton writes that WR Kadron Boone will make his decision on National Signing Day, February 3rd. Here's what Boone had to say about his visit to West Virginia and his upcoming visit to LSU (who by the way, just received a commitment from James Wright, the #42 ranked receiver and LSU passed for a whopping 181 yards a game last year):
Carmical's Commitment: Pine Bluff Commercial's Troy Schulte talks with recent Texas Tech commit Joe Carmical on his commitment to Texas Tech, who says that head coach Tommy Tuberville and defensive coordinator James Willis just wanted to see the film on Carmical:
"I know (Tuberville) got a hold of my film and that’s all coaches really care about," Carmical said. "They aren’t too interested in measurables, they want to see the film."
And Carmical is excited to play for Willis:
"He’s the type of coach I want to play for," Carmical said. "He’s been in my situation. He played in high school, college and the pros. I was already in a good mindset before I even went out there."
Snip.
He said Willis told him his defenses are built around the middle linebacker, who is trusted to make checks and audibles before a play. He also said Willis told him he doesn’t "recruit players to redshirt." Carmical will arrive on campus next fall and his plan is to see if he fits anywhere in the rotation at linebacker.
Recruiting Lists: LAJ's Don Williams and the FWST have come out with their recruiting lists. Peruse at your leisure.
Everyone Agrees, Cumbie is Great: RRS.com's Joe Yeager writes that Tuberville's promotion to inside receivers coach is a great promotion:
But Cumbie will be valuable for more than just his X's and O's. At 28 years of age, he will be another young coach who should be able to connect with recruits. He is also an extremely personable, articulate man with a considerable amount of presence. The fact that he is at heart a West Texas boy will only add to what Cumbie can accomplish on the recruiting trail. The appointment of Cumbie to Tech's staff should dramatically strengthen Tech's recruiting efforts in Texas and ensure that while many future Red Raiders will hail from SEC country, the local boys will not be forgotten.
Ranking Coaching Hires, Part III-ish: I think this is the third or fourth ranking of the recent coaching hires, but it's fodder nonetheless. CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodds writes that the Red Raiders had the 2nd best hire in the nation:
2. Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech: After Leach, Texas Tech was never going to find another coach who was going to a) stay 10 years and b) win 84 games. Tubs was hungry to get back, running out of BCS conference opportunities after sitting out a year. This is the perfect match, then, for a wounded program. Tech is grateful to have a laid-back non-lawyer in the fold while Tubs is grateful for the chance. The Red Raiders will run more than they did under Leach and definitely play better defense. Translation: It's back to being about chasing BCS bowls more than "electrical sheds" in Lubbock.

Maybe its just me, but
I’m getting damn tired of these “pundits” talking about “electrical” when it has been stated under oath that this is not the case. And I would still like for someone to tell me exactly waht the abuse was. Damn.

A lot of people are taking opportunity to use some form of reference to the shed.
I would not expect any of that to be accurate as much as attempts at humor. (actually funny or not )

Yes, there have been many photos of the shed.
It is actually more the size of a single car garage…it is a metal on wood frame building, think portable building, with a roll up garage doors, lots of space for training field equipment, ice maker, etc.

About Gerry Hamilton
He usually reports anything negative that may come up about Tech. So, I am not putting too much weight on his speculation about Boone.

Hamilton's bias shows
Hamilton either reports negatively about Tech, or sarcastically about Tech. Here is a link to google search page about ‘Gerry Hamilton’ and ‘Texas Tech’. He has refered to ‘Lubbock’ as ‘Lubik’ just for fun and his body of work on Tech includes only reporting on those recruits who have changed from Tech to other schools. His bias clearly shows, because he reports positively about Baylor and A&M:

Yep.
And here is the problem with something like that. These “services” don’t have to follow the same rules as the coaches. They can contact the kids whenever they want. Or at least that appears to be the case to me.
So what is to stop someone like Geoff Ketchum from OB.com from talking negatively about a rival school? I think the people from these sites should have to follow the same rules as the coaches when it comes to talking to the kids. Just my $0.02.

Recruiting on the High Plains...

A good example of why I don't follow recruiting
Pardon me while I step on my soapbox.
Maybe it’s just me, but there appears to be a direct correlation between a players ability on the field and their ability to learn the definition of the word commitment. It seems the more “stars” you have next to your name, the less you understand what that means.
Now I’m not trying to pick on a 17 yr old kid, but how do you reconcile still being committed to Tech with “whatever happens” on signing day??? And it isn’t just Boone. This is entirely too common. Quite frankly, parents of these kids need to teach them what it means to be committed.
And to be clear, I don’t care how many trips a kid takes to various schools. For all I care, they can go see every campus in the country. And I don’t have a problem with someone saying [fill in the blank] University is in the lead as of now. But once you are “committed” to a school, then all this other nonsense should stop.
climbing down now. thank you

On the other hand it has to be hard
to simply say no to a week end on the other guy’s ticket. Not only do you get to go and enjoy all the attention, but then you get to go back to school and enjoy the adulation of all your green with envy friends who want to know all about it.
Not saying it is right or wrong…just what can be happening with some of the prospects…college football has a lot of money and it is spent pretty lavishly.

that's a fair point
And I can’t blame them for having a little vacation fun. And I wouldn’t have an issue if a kid said “I’m fully committed to xyz school regardless of whether or not I go visit another campus.” At least then you would feel he is honoring the committment and just taking advantage of a school spending money on him.
It’s a lot like getting married. If you want to be with other/multiple women, then just don’t get married. If you want to visit/be recruited by multiple schools, then simply don’t commit to any of them until signing day.

These kids should feel gratitude just being offered by a school. Too much sense of entitlement with these youngsters. Man, I sound old. I think Bonne stays with tech in the end strictly because Scotty Young and Corker have not to mention the McRoy brothers. If we can keep him and the ones mentioned….look out. Don williams report on recruiting
Don Williams’ report on recruiting shows that Tech is still being outrecruited by a number of out of state schools (including parasite schools like OSU, LSU and OU). One of the weakest points of the Leach era was that we were never able to successfully make inroads into the cream of Texas High School recruits. However, Leach always thought out of the box and he had developed a national pipeline of recruits instead. One of the reasons for this was in the early years of Leach era, the High School coaches were falsely recommending their 3, 4 and 5 stars to choose UT or A&m and was offering the 2 and 3 stars to Leach. This probably pissed him off and he developed a national pipeline of recruits for Tech. Recently however, after Tech’s sustained success, one of the common complains in the Texas High Schools is that Tech does not recruit enough from within the State. Hopefully, with Tuberville we will be able to change some of this trend and be able to bite into a creamy chunk of Texas High School recruits in the future. But time will tell.
by jef on Jan 27, 2010 8:54 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
It does kind of make one wonder...
Mike Leach did have connections, his ability to find coaches has shown to be pretty strong…on the other hand, I have the impression that he was not all that strong or enjoyed doing the leg work for players…he did place good recruiting coaches in that role though.
Tuberville seems to have more fun working the recruits, maybe we will see him make more impact in Texas with more time to get connected and work his sales.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
by TallMike on Jan 27, 2010 9:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Leach was never known as a good recruiter. He left most of that to the assistants, though he did some. Tuberville seems to really enjoy that process of selling. And that’s ALL recruiting is. Sales.
I give Tuberville a huge pass on this year’s class. He’s at a distinct disadvantage, but I do expect some nice things moving forward. I’m pleased.
by Tech92 on Jan 27, 2010 9:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe we will,
but I’m not sure that more “leg work” from the HC is what does that. There’s a dynamic at work in recruiting that is a more subtle and difficult thing to balance. Making more calls to a prospect can make you appear weak and even desperate. The psychology of recruiting was actually a strength for Leach and it’s just odd to see some people here claim he was not a good recruiter. I guess there are still people that think he wasn’t a good coach because he didn’t run the ball enough. Results are what matter, and so far we have some reasons to be concerned.

Ya, really.
I think Leach is underrated as a recruiter, given our situation. He was also able to sit in a living room with parents and be credible when he told them that academics and graduating student athletes were important to him. And in case you missed the head fake Tubs gave you, he is interested in making his players “better people”, but translate what’s not said and you get not so interested in graduating student athletes. This may well open up a larger pool of players for us to draw from, but I think there good reason to be concerned about our credibility as an academic institution if you intend compete by pulling kids from the football factory in Austin. During Tubs tenure, Auburn was right up there with Texas as a national disgrace when it comes to graduating student athletes.
So how do you measure recruiting? I guess I’m thinking the guy who can recruit to any of the military academy football teams is a better recruiter than Mack Brown. Just a matter of different priorities… and if the price of a NC is to be a greater whore than UT, then I for one am satisfied with our recent record of beating the evil empire as an underdog, and with kids that still learn something about the value of an education.
by raider realist on Jan 28, 2010 12:59 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Tuberville also spoke to graduating players, even as he spoke to making them better people.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
by TallMike on Jan 28, 2010 10:12 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Nope. He said the exact opposite...
From his very first presser….
“I’m not here to get them a degree, per se. My job,
I’m a teacher. And the one thing that I want them
to learn and understand and the parents when I
recruit these kids to come to Texas Tech
University, is that when they leave here, they’re a
better person. You know, that means more than
education, that means more than football.”
by raider realist on Jan 28, 2010 1:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Indeed, he did say that
later in the same presser he spoke to sitting with parents and prospects and saying that ‘you will have to earn a degree,’ he spoke to that as part of his comments about having two full time jobs, and he said it at least three times.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
by TallMike on Jan 28, 2010 3:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct, Tuberville did talk about graduating players:
Link:
What I tell the recruits when I recruit them with their parents sitting in front of me – I say, Listen, this is the first time and only time in your life that you’ll have two full-time jobs. Academics will be full-time here at Texas Tech University. It is going to be hard. It’s going to be time consuming study halls. You will have to earn a degree. Then you have to turn around and have a full-time job in football, and that’s going to be just as hard. And if you can survive those two, you know, you’ll leave here not just a winner and with a degree, but a better person. That’s what I always look forward to in seeing those guys put the cap and gown on and walking down that aisle, getting that degree and going off. Then coming back and being great alumni and great fan supporters of the team that they played for.

Mike Leach didn’t do the recruiting himself. He hired people to do that FOR him. A wise man will know his own weaknesses and allocate those duties to someone who can do it better.

BS
I’m not knocking Leach but we all knew he was no public relations specialist. That is a big part of recruiting and sending your assistants isn’t always enough if you want to compete with the big boys. Mike was the face of the program and if you think hiring people to do that face to face with recruits and parents is enough your mistaken. Recruiting is the life blood of a successful program. No soapbox here just stating some simple facts about how competitive recruiting is. If you think I think Tuberville is an offensive genius your wrong and I never said that. I think he made excellent hires to instill what Leach built here offensively. I said Tuberville will out recruit Leach and I strongly believe that. “Apples and freakin’ hand grenades”…not sure what your talking about.

My thoughts
On how you reach High School coaches…Invite them to campus. Invite them to come to town and observe practice and visit with them about schemes. Let them sit in coaching meetings, etc. Nothing get’s people on board more or faster than a little personal attention.
And in some of these schools, the HC’s recommendation goes a long, long way with the kids and their parents.

Congratulations to Scotty Young !!
and to Coach Tuberville/Coach Brown for helping him see he has a future at TTU. Parade All American !! Nice !!
I am not too concerned about the 3-4 and this season’s recruiting, there is little time to really work it, and there are a bunch of guys who are going to play this year who are already on campus and who will play no matter who is recruited this year. I am thinking of the 3-4 simply as a goal or a direction…give it a couple of years to develop.
I have to admit, that even with Boone’s comment that he never de-committed, he sounds soft with other quotes.
The more that I am reading about Cumbie as a coach, the more I like who he appears to be. I hope he is a recruiting kind of guy, he might become a fine HC some day.
I noticed on FWST list, a TE, Antonio Johnson, 6-6, 250 from Diboll who is considering Tech, I take that as TTU…he shows up on other lists as a OT. They also showed Quinton Parks from Humble Atascacito as a wr considering Tech.

I still can’t figure out how Boone, a 4.6 – 40 guy, is so sought after. I watched his highlight video. It’s good and all, but not much different to me than most kids at his position. He’s flat out slow. Unless we have some awesome speed coaches, I don’t see how 4.6 cuts it at the D-I level.

Agreed. But Welker is built for the slot at 5’9". Boone, not quite as much at 6’1". A bit too tall to get lost in the mass of bodies like Welker often did. I am not trying to dog the kid. Honestly, I’m not. I don’t think he’ll suck, I just don’t understand the hype surrounding him.
Welker was a diamond in the rough and I am hesitant to compare any HS kid to what Welker turned into. Not yet, anyway. Welker was unique in a lot of ways. His makeup had as much to do with his success as ability did.

If it is not his speed it must be intangibles !!
I really must look a a film of Boone, I heard he was kind of like Crabtree and Filani in that he was strong with the ball. Remember neither of those guys had particularly great speed either, but their strength made a lot of difference both getting open and then yards after.

Crabtree...
was only 1/10th faster and Boone’s at the same weight Crab was before he came to Tech. I see him being more of a possession receiver than a speed guy.
He is a few inches shorter than Crabtree which what I see as more of a disadvantage than less speed when it comes to a physical type receiver.

Not saying his going to be as good a college receiver as Crabtree. I’m only saying that their measurables are similar at the time both are (were in Crabtree’s case) committing to a school.

You’re probably right. Again, it’s the hype I don’t understand. His video didn’t blow me away. Then again, I’m not paid to analyze these kids so I’m not exactly stellar source material for this…or much else.
by Tech92 on Jan 27, 2010 11:16 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
for boone, it’s more about body control and power than true speed. Very similar to crabtree in this regard. Remember that this video from this year is of him 1 year after a knee injury. He’ll be faster when he steps on campus. Keep in mind that he’s playing in one of the fastest regions in the nation and players aren’t catching him in the open field.
I prefer to have a combination of power guys, quickness guys, and burners and leapers to run the air raid proper. This year we have a few speed guys a leaper and a bunch of “hands” guys in torres and swindall, but no power guys like boone would be and no quickness guys that made the 2 deep. He’ll work in this offense, I think, and will show why he’s rated so high.

HC in Texas recruiting.....
I think it is a big deal when the HC is out recruiting. To me growing up in Texas that did and would mean alot to parents and to High School Coaches. And Coaches have their own “faternity” and to have someone with stature of TT out and about seems to be a big deal in Texas. TT just needs to keep it up. I know TTech has had Coaching camps the past few years and Leach I’m sure talked about his Offense, I just wonder how much hand slapping he did. Wreck’Em Tech
