New DL Coach from Recruiting Heaven
According to Footballscoop.com, Coach Tuberville is about to complete his staff by hiring Robert Prunty. RRS is also reporting a teaser about a new DL coach being targeted, so putting 2 and 2 together to identify his role is rather simple.
Texas Tech: We hear Hargrave Military coach Robert Prunty will be joining the staff. We hear Troy Davis (current defensive coordinator) will be named the new head coach at Hargrave.
For those of you unfamiliar with Hargrave Military Academy and why such a hire is relevant, HMA is no New Mexico Military Institute. From the school's website . . .
Hargrave's Post-Graduate Football program is not out to win. It is out to place. It is out to place your son in an NCAA qualified school, preferably D3 or better.
The program pushes students on the practice field, tests their character and leadership and, most importantly, gets them committed to their education. Hargrave’s dedicated faculty, staff and coaches work toward realizing your son’s dreams by teaching them self-discipline, hard work and dedication to their goals.
In other words, they take the multi-star recruits that cannot academically qualify and help them get their act together off the field. The program seems to have enjoyed a bit of success in its mission. During the Leach era (1999-2009), HMA produced SIX first-round draft picks. According to Rivals, this year's crop has eight 4-stars and nineteen 3-stars . . . and that's a fairly typical year! FYI: Time spent at the prep school does not count against the athlete's NCAA eligibility.

As did Hal Mumme . . .
but Staubach and Mumme don’t make a football powerhouse. I was just trying to make a point that HMA isn’t a typical military school (and it’s the only one that many West Texans can relate to); it has a nice football factory to go along with its military school.

Can we steal a few?
Wowsers !
I wonder what kind of deal attracted Prunty ? No intention of suggesting anything wrong, it just looks as if he might have had a pretty good thing going.
If we start thinking about his connections, our imaginations can run wild…

Nice work CRV.
I can appreciate having to put things together. Interesting to see if this has an effect this year, or if it will take a year to have an effect.

And promoted to the front pag
because I don’t have time to do notes this morning.

As a coach I know how I have tested character and leadership and got kids committed to their education. Not sure how this is going to be different from having a spoiled brat, no talent, lazy distraction go stand in time out. Helping someone get their act together is a nice way of putting it.
As interesting is the impact/influence wielded by parents, do they assist or enable the child...
One thing the world of sports is going to be looking at, perhaps not overtly, is the next circumstance that comes to light (if any) at the three institutions that have fired coaches with charges of abuse in the firing investigation.
I am finding myself mentally clicking with every comment about a coach who has a great reputation as a motivator, helper of kids in trouble, etc.
At the same time, I marvel when I read in the local ads about ‘schools’ that are termed boot camps to help troubled youngster learn discipline.

Not related but...
Ha ha not related but you will like this snippet:
Sadler ?
What position will Charlie Sadler be coaching if they are bringing in a new DL coach?
RRS is calling him a Linebackers coach. So we’ll see what he ends up doing with the defense.

It's "official"
Hargrave Military Academy post-graduate head coach Robert Prunty resigned Thursday to become the defensive line coach at Texas Tech University.
Troy Davis, who served as Hargrave’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator last season, will be promoted to head coach Friday.
Prunty, a Chatham native who spent nine seasons at Hargrave, will effectively step down as coach on Friday to help with recruiting at Texas Tech. He is expected to make "immediate contributions to the program," according to a news release from Hargrave.
Prunty, who declined to comment until the transition was finalized, has been responsible for placing more than 300 players from Hargrave with Division I football teams and at least 27 of those players have gone on to play in the NFL.
I hope his “immediate contributions” include bringing about 5 four-star kids with him to finish up our DL, OL, and LB needs for this class. And go ahead and throw in a few for next year also. If that was the case, a lot of people would forget about Ruffin’s and Lincoln Riley’s recruiting ability and have a new favorite coach.
Prunty is one impressive coach
Read the post by Ensign Buss. http://www.hargrave.edu/athletics/seasons_past.php You then begin to understand why Tuberville hired Prunty.
"Doing what is right is easy. The problem is knowing what is right".
Since Hargrave is a one year program for post-HS kids, his ability to bring recruits with him seems limited. Maybe his former assistant who is now taking over can point kids this way, kinda like HS coaches can influence kids to look at certain colleges.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Indeed, he may not bring that many with him, and the link with the Hargrave staff is valuable,
but his value seems more in the vein of being a good personality with kids who are on the border, or who have not been led well—but have the ability to be a good student athlete.
Consider the effort, connections, and networks that he has that allow him to create a new team every season with such good athletes, work with them one year, and have them ready for a next step as a true freshman in college…it is like JC, but an express lane w/o loss of elegibiity.
Apparently, he is a pretty good coach as well.
