Thursday's Five Questions

Sorry for the lack of a DTN DD today.  Been busy with a couple of personal items.  No matter, the tradition continues, marking it's third week in a row, Thursday's Five Questions.

  1. Last night it was reported that there is a memorandum from Texas Tech University which essentially stated that Craig James threatened to sue Texas Tech if the University did not investigate Leach's actions in regards to his son, Adam James.  Craig James' public relation firm flatly denies any sort of threatened lawsuit.  Obviously, one of two parties is not telling the truth, either the University or Craig James.  At this point, who do you believe?  Acceptable answers include no one.
  2. Also last night, the men's basketball team played one of the top ranked teams in the country, Texas, to eventually wear out the last few minutes of the game.  Texas Tech was out-manned, with PF Darko Cohadarevic out due to a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team and PF D`Walyn Roberts out due to injury.  Any thoughts on if those two would have impacted the team last night or did the Red Raiders?
  3. Thanks to CRV's FanPost for possibly piecing together the puzzle of who the new defensive line coach may be, who is the current head coach of Hargrave Military Academy, Robert Prunty.  As pointed out in the FanPost, Hargrave is known to be a place that produces quite a bit of talented college football players.  What do you think about this type of hire?  Follow up question, does anyone have any reservations in that this seems vaguely similar to basketball coaches hiring AAU coaches to lure recruits?
  4. Since we're all recruiting experts, some quick predictions.  Who will be the best offensive and defensive player from this current class and who do you project as being offensive and defensive sleepers of this year's class (see the sidebar for a list or Monday's post)?
  5. One more prediction about last year's class (please note that this was the signing class from last year and there were some players who didn't qualify or already left campus), but who do you think will make an impact this year, offense and defense?

Folks I dont trust anything the Craig James machine says..

The C. James threatened lawsuit is just more of the same. Tech administration looked at this as an opportunity to dump a troublesome employee. No consideration – beyond Geez that’s a shame ya’ll.. was given to the effect on the fan base.

The TTU administration better pray Tubs does one better than Leach in 2010. Just sayin..

1. Threatened lawsuit? There may be a memo that says that. My guess is that James said something. He intended one thing (investigate) and Tech inferred another (investigate or else I will sue you) and wrote a memo accordingly.
2. I was proud of Tech’s effort. I think Roberts would have made an impact on rebounding and interior defense in the 2nd half when the game turned due to UT’s superior athleticism on the inside. Don’t think Darko would have made a difference due to his limited athleticism.
3. Love it! Direct access to talent. Not same concerns as hiring an AAU coach. I get the impression that Hargrave helps weed out the troublemakers and the guys who aren’t going to qualify vis a vis the AAU guys, who often deal with the outlaws.
4. Best offense: Aleon Calhoun, great tools
Best defense: Jackson Richards, needs to gain weight, but will, then look out
Offensive sleeper: Ben McRoy (think Dexter McCluster)
Defensive sleeper: Donald Langley (good size-already here-has his act together)
5. Last year’s class
     Offense: Eric Ward (great measurables)
Defense: Myles Wade (he will be a beast in the 3-4)

New DL coach ...

What will TT do with Charlie Sadler if he brings in a new DL coach ?

1. Everything Centex stated above sums it up.
2. I don’t know enough about BB to comment.
3. Prunty – I think Tuberville probably thinks under Willis this guy will good and using his recruiting connections and reputation speaks for itself.
4. Best offense player – Scotty Young QB, best defensive player – Scott Smith if he shows up but if not Jackson Richards. Sleepers – Carmical at LB, Griffin at RB, Rumph at DT
5. last years class Offense – Ward, Defense – Graves

1. No one
2. Great effort by Tech hopefully we will be at full strength next time we play them.
3. I like the hire and him having a pipeline to a great recruiting source is just what this school needs as long as he keeps it with in the rules. I don’t want Tech to get NCAA penalties.
4. 1. Scotty Young
    2. Jackson Richards
    3. DT Coleman (great size and still has a sub 4.8) DE Lawrence Rumph. RB Griffin
    4. Ward (can’t wait to see him play), Graves.

1. TTU has a memo, James has already denied the threat, so now it is alleged. The media has released information coming off the open records act…and both lawyer teams are reacting or thinking of what is smart in the circumstances. I can make no conclusion without going on a speculation spree. I’ll pass on that.

2. Darko and Roberts out resulted in playing a small quick team that did pretty well until they ran out of gas….there was not enough bench to keep up with UT’s bench. It showed me some insights that the coaching staff could come up with a pretty good game plan even if they did not have the horses to complete it on the court.

3. I did think about the AAU thingy. The next dot would be the stream of recruits that follow Prunty (man, that is a difficult to remember name !) to TTU. The thing that is very different is that and I am making the assumption that Coach Prunty is, indeed, a qualified coach and teacher who is working his career coming off of a proper college degree.

4. The best defensive player in the current class is Smith. On offense it is Young.

5.a. If Ward, Gray, and Clark, do not contribute this season, they are over rated out of HS. A 4 star out off of a RS season should be ready to make some noise…Stephens already has and he is a player, I expect him to play better this year, more consistently perhaps even more impressively (he was close to getting a couple of td’s last season on returns, with some great ones called back on penalty.) Then there is Aaron Fisher, great height, probably heavier, and who has made some eyebrows rise from his work last season….he may be the one who surprises us.

5.b. Wade needs to be exciting/solid this year coming out of the chute. Graves needs to be showing as a valuable second guy at whatever position. Mahoney needs to make a solid run at OLB, as a starter. Karam is caught between a rock and a hard spot with great depth ahead of him. Ford is kind of like Stephens in that he has shown his stuff and will get better. Any guy who has potential to be a DE has an opportunity.

Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.

My Thoughts . . .

1. I have no basis for trusting either James or Hance. It’s not a stretch to imagine James making such threats, just as it’s no stretch to think Hance would fabricate such a claim. I really do not think it has relevance to the legal case: due process was not employed regardless of what the triggering event may have been.
2. As much as I would like that win, I believe tu would have found a way to pull it out. They are too deep and had much to prove coming off losses. And, I believe PK makes enough to justify the purchase of a suit and tie.
3. I believe it’s a brilliant hire. This man’s Rolodex (young guys: that is like a paper-based address book) likely contains the names of every powerhouse HS coach in the eastern and southern US. It gives at least a 5 year boost to recruiting and hopefully a Year 0 boost with some transferred commitments. AAU coaches are positioning themselves as brokers between the HS recruits and the programs; HMA is primarily working with athletes who couldn’t qualify for D1-D3 regardless of their intent.
4. Defense: Scott Smith (if non-MIA); Offense: Beau Carpenter; D Sleeper: Joe Carmical; O Sleeper: Shawn Corker; Lucky Radley shakes this up if he signs.
5. Defense: Kerry Hyder; Offense: Will Ford

If Karam isn’t leading #2 QB race in spring, I predict he transfers. I hope that I’m wrong but . . .

by CRV on Jan 28, 2010 11:15 AM CST reply actions

I wouldn’t think Karam would transfer if he’s not #2 this year. With Potts and Sticks ahead of him as seniors, that would leave the door open to be #1 in 2011. He apparently has a great attitude, so I don’t think he would be too whiny in 2010.

I think he would beat out Doege in 2011, but he might have some competition from Young by then (depending on his development after the redshirt year). If Young beats him out in that situation, I could see him entertaining the thought of transferring.

by pcrawttu on Jan 28, 2010 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

1. Who is telling the truth?
Difficult to say at this point

2.The weakness was defense. 80+ points against UT on the road was as much as a team can expect, but without defense (we let them score 90+) its difficult to win any game against div 1 opponents on the road. Inability to coach defense has been PK’s and our teams weakness so far

3. I like the Prunty hire. Not just because of his contacts that will help us build inroads into this recruiting channel, but also because his ability to coach these guys up to the levels where they become highly sort after recruits.

4. I am torn between Scotty Young, Boone, Porter and Lucky (assuming they all commit) on the offense, but I think we will see some real stars emerge on the defense (sorry for being vague here)

5. Eric ward

Was at the game last night -

Saw three things that lost this game

1) Lack of defensive rebounding
2) Inability to get Robertson shots in the second half
3) Brad Reese

by raider05 on Jan 28, 2010 12:44 PM CST reply actions

Was Reese that bad? how about Tairu, he also laid an egg I think? thanks for the update.

by jef on Jan 28, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

Sort answer is yes, and not really

Reese made some horrible decisions with the ball. One example, TTU is up going into half, and we have the ball with the shot-clock off, Reese shoots a wild 3 pointer with 13 seconds left, gives UT the ball back, which of course they capitalize on. Being at the game, it was clear he was out of rythm, and that his shot decisions and inability to rebound were huge. When singletary went out with 3 fouls, we had to rely on him more, which was the beginning of the end.

by raider05 on Jan 28, 2010 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

That was actually Tairu

at the end of the half, I remember that the announcers kept calling Reese’s name, but I think it was Tairu who took that shot at the end of the half because Pat was “talking” sternly to Tairu when UT called a timeout.

Not only did he miss every shot, but he took a lot of shots. The only element of his game worse than his offense…..his defense.

1. I saw both James’ and Hance’s lips move – so they are both lying.
2. Good game plan last night, just not enough horses. Could have used Roberts.
3. I don’t care who we get for defensive coaches if we make a stop on 3rd and 7.
4. Boone – offense / Smith – defense (if we find him)
5. Jeffers – offense with Karam a close second / Erxleben – special teams – and I am betting on Mahoney on D.

oh, and did I mention that Craig James can bite me?

by blackbeard on Jan 28, 2010 1:31 PM CST reply actions

1. I trust both sides about as far as I can throw them so, NO ONE.
2. Would not have made a difference, they are too deep and at home. We might have a chance in Lubbock if one of the two players is back and the team plays as well as it did last night. Still not much long term confidence in Pat Knight.
3. He could be a coach that is able to Mentor the borderling players and help keep them from leaving the program. How many connections he has, I don’t know. I do not see any thing similar to the AAU coaches in basketball. That system, unfortunately, has become a haven for scumbags who coach, take advantage of youth, and maybe even some scumbag college coaches. I know some are good, but some of them are on the same level of used car salesman and trial lawyers.
4. Best offensive players – too early but Boone and Lucky if they commit. Best defensive players – don’t know.
5. Eric Stephens on offense/special teams – another year of knowledge and experience. Ward could be something special. Defense – off the wall but Myles Wade should and we need Pearlie Graves to grow up and be a beast. It seems to me that both of these will have to help out on DE if the 3 4 defense on first and second down running plays their size.

Oh, and for blackbeard, I agree, Craig James can eat a rock.

Watch out

I heard that trial lawyer remark. :-)

Oh, and Craig James can bite Blackbeard once for me, too. Hope you’ve had your shots, Blackbeard. God only knows what you could catch.

by TechFirst on Jan 28, 2010 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

I think...

1. Craig James? I think enough has been learned about this "who me?!?!?" douchebag to withhold comment to what I’ve just written

2. I watched the game and felt it was a lot like the Seminole/Blue Devils game last night. Whatever happens the favored team is gonna find a way to pull it out. Good teams do that. The Red Raiders played a hell of a game.

3. I won’t repeat what most here have already said about Coach Prunty. Suffice to say I agree with everyone else’s assesment of the guy. BUT. Has anyone else noticed the vibe going around out DEFENSE this off season? I feel Coach Tuberville "The South Plains Drifter" is putting into place a REAL plan of action into our defense. There is a logic behind Tubbs’ moves. He’s putting a guy to run HIS defense in Coach Willis and the hires of Tommy Mainord and the other guys are all part of a master plan. Now the hire of Robert Prunty will serve a purpose too. Our new defense will need Tuberville type players NOW. Sure, we have guys like Bront Bird and Myles Wade who will flourish in a 3-4 scheme. There will surely be others who will benefit as well. But the quickest way to get those Tubbs-type guys will be to find a pipeline. Coach Prunty will very likely be our connection to PREP/Post Prep guys who are eager to get their grades right and get on the field. A program known for placing guys in D3 would LOVE to upgrade that to D1 (FBS, yes I know) and the #1 public university in terms of graduation rate is a natural fit.

Think about it…It beats the hell out of “fire the DC and hope the inside hire (Ruffin M) does a good job”. That is a HUGE step up to a guy who could very possibly be putting in place a defensive system that is just as committed to schemes and recruiting “their” type players as much as the offense is. Mind blowing. I REALLY LOVE THIS DEVELOPMENT.

4a. 2010 Class Offense Contributor – Boone/Corker. I don’t care how good our current stable of receivers is now. Boone/Corker’s talents will NOT keep them on the bench and SOMEONE will be overtaken. Just ask Tramain Swindall.
4b. 2010 Class Defense Contributor – Dunno. I will just throw a dart at Scott Smith. I like his measureables. 6’7" – 275lbs. Seems like an excellent DE in a 3-4 scheme where he is not the guy in pass rush duty.

5a. 2009 Class Offense Contributor – Eric Stephens seems like the unanimous answer but I still like Harrison Jeffers. When this guy explodes it will be spectacular.
5b. 2009 Class Defense Contributor – Will Ford. I think the ceiling on this guy is no where near being reached. He will continue to improve

Question 1

I believe James is lying. The sense of entitlement and arrogance that permeates the James father and son team makes this assessment a slam dunk. Now the Administration may be "wormy" and cowardly, but logic tells me that the speed in which this occurred showed that Tech feared a lawsuit due to the bad publicity it would bring the University worse than admonishment by the Tech fans and the Captain. Look at how the outside media portrays Leach. Majority of the media, especially ESPN, would continuously comment on what a brilliant coach he is, but quirky, and he should have exercised better judgment and signed the letter of apology. Leach’s side of the story was released in dribs and drabs, particularly his explanation why he didn’t sign the letter, and so it never got any traction. This, folks is the politically correct world we live in.

Assuming I am correct

….about why this went down the way it did, Tech’s Administration could have performed a thorough investigation rather than practicing preventive law and taking the expedient safe route rather than the correct route.

Wouldn’t it have been more politically correct to handle things by letter of the law…and how was anything in the way this was handled “the correct route”?

IMHO performing a thorough investigation WOULD have been politically correct, to the letter of the law, and the correct route.

1) When the University releases statements about Craig James that he vehemently denies, you know that CJ is the one who is lying; especially since it was the University who fired Mike Leach. Either that or the University has finally come to the realization that the only chance they have of scathing away from this legal case without a financial settlement to Leach is to direct the attention off of them and point the finger at Craig James with hopes the settlement falls on his lap to pay rather than the University. Either way, I don’t see CJ or the University winning this case and I see justice being served in Leach’s favor. Granted 6 of the 7 charges are being considered for dismissal by the judge, but one charge is all Leach needs to walk home with a huge sum. Hopefully, this “James-A-Rella” soap opera will teach the University several things:

One, If a person has a problem with a faculty member talk to them DIRECTLY about the matter FACE to FACE and not speculate bs drama through 3rd party e-mail. All they needed to do was bring in Leach and ask him what the deal was b/w him and Adam James, what the deal was b/w him and his so-called “interviews” with other Universities, and then call Daddy James back and tell him that if he wants to complain then he can take his joke of a son and transfer him since “standing” is too much of a physical disability for him.

It also should teach this Administration that they seriously need to grow up and stop living in an easy going sophomoric fantasy world where secretaries are hot cheerleaders and Presidents/AD’s/BOR’s/Boosters are all jocks who thrive on their upper socioeconomic status when it comes to managing what I thought was a professional educational institution but has proven to me time and time again to rather be the equivalent of Parliament having sex with Cinderella.

Reading the exchange of e-mails among those fictional characters within Tech Administration was enough evidence of immaturity for me (esp considering those involved in those conversations were equivalent in age to Gandalf the Grey)

Can we please get some young fresh blood up in that bell tower? Our University is showing signs of oligarchy sucking on “sovereign immunity” lollipops, and I’m really sick and tired of it.

Questions 2-5

2. Proud of the player’s performance…a big turn around from the Kansas game.
3. Tubbs picked Prunty to instill character, grit, and determination into the defense. What is Hargrave noted for? Taking academic slackers and problem players and molding them into top notch players. The players success at the next two levels under Prunty speaks for itself.
4. This year’s class:
Offense: Young (best player); Corker (sleeper)
Defense: Richards (best player); Carmichael (sleeper – like the intangibles)
5. Last year’s class:
     Ward (Offense)
     Graves (Defense)

by jdhud on Jan 28, 2010 6:05 PM CST reply actions

1-2

1. I have to believe Craig James is lying. I guess I haven’t seen the memo, but James and Texas Tech were on the same side of this whole debacle. Texas Tech was required by law to let this information out – they didn’t volunteer it at any point during the last month. Texas Tech has no reason to make James look bad now. Craig James, on the other hand, is trying to still play the “I am not a douche” card even though everyone can plainly see that he’s a giant douche.

2. I was excited when I glanced over and saw that we were holding our own. I hope that it improves the team’s confidence that they were alive and even winning against a really good team until very late in the game. Totally different story than the Kansas game. I don’t think Darko would have made a positive impact.

by merrik on Jan 28, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

1. Everyone is a liar when it’s convenient.
2. Roberts was greatly missed. Darko, who knows? The play before halftime when the shot was taken with 13 seconds left, which allowed Texas to take the last shot and cut the lead by three made me turn the game off. That kind of selfish and stupid play will cause a team with lesser talent to lose, and it did. That play took allthe momentum gained in the first half away from the team; they were never the same. Basketball is funny that way; every possession can change the game and the result, particularly if it is a bonehead play.
3. Impossible to judge this hire. I hope it is a good addition in every possible way. Time will tell.
4. Scotty Young
Scott Smith if he shows up. Otherwise, Jackson Richards. DEs are going to have to play.
5. Eric Ward. Time to play. Time to shine.
Will Ford. Future 1st team all Big 12 and NFL player.
