Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 01.29.10

Dallas Recruiting Review: I've secured my tickets for the Dallas Recruiting Review on Thursday, February 4th and I've only received 1 email confirming that other DTN readers will also be there. I'll be there with friends taking pictures and I'll be like a reporter in that I'll try to give you as much information from the event as humanly possible, but I won't be like a reporter in that I'm just like everyone else and pay for my own admission. If anyone intends on showing up, shoot me an email or leave a comment.
All Three Sports: Holy Smokes! This marks the first time in quite a while when the DTN DD contains news on all three sports. Don't forget that tomorrow, the basketball team takes on the Aggies and I'll have a preview tomorrow morning. Also, we're only a few days away from signing day (which makes me happy in that we can stop wringing our hands over the decisions of 18 year olds).
Winter Weather: The DT staff took a bunch of pictures from the winter weather that hit Lubbock yesterday. If you're not in Lubbock, then take a look.

Hargrave Coach Hired: We have confirmation (not that we didn't have it yesterday) that Hargrave Military Academy head coach Robert Prunty will be named as a defensive assistant after National Signing Day. LAJ's Don Williams, the Pittsylvania Star Tribune and goDanRiver.com's Damien Sordelett all have stories on Prunty taking a job with the Red Raiders. This is from Williams' article on Prunty's talents:
"He’d get a new crop every year and have two to three weeks, tops, to jell them into a team before playing the first game against whatever competition,’’ Wiebking said. "That takes a lot of knowledge about personalities and how to manage young men. He did an impressive job with that.’’
This has the potential to be a terrific hire for Tuberville. It's already been discussed here on DTN, but Hargrave was known to produce a ton, and I mean a ton, of talented players each and every year that played at a high level in college football or the NFL. That sort of potential pipeline could prove to be an advantage that pushes Texas Tech closer to the recruiting giants of the Big 12. I'm not counting on Prunty being able to produce some of that talent at Texas Tech this year, that wouldn't be fair, but this will certainly be something to watch.
One other thought is that I like how Tuberville is thinking outside the box a bit in terms of his hires. When Tuberville said before he was hired that he had been thinking about football for the last year, I believe him. That's not to say that I think that Tuberville had decided on exactly who he wanted to hire, but I do think he put together a list of coaches that he would target to be a part of his staff. The hire of Prunty seems like it's out of thin air, but I'd guess that Tuberville's been thinking about this hire for quite some time.
Grading Hires, Part . . . Whatever: Rivals.com's Mike Hugenin grades the coaching hires from major conferences and here's his rational for giving the Tuberville a C+:
Texas Tech and Tommy Tuberville
Buzz: Texas Tech is getting a proven head coach and one who has made his bones on the defensive side of the ball. The Red Raiders became relevant nationally because of former coach Mike Leach's offense. If you were an offensive player, you signed with Tech because of Leach's funky offense. If you were a defensive player, you signed with Tech because, for the most part, it was the best offer you received. Tuberville's mission is to keep the offensive pipeline open while also bringing in better defensive recruits. Tuberville is used to recruiting in the shadows of more established programs, but he must be prepared to do that on a different level now. Texas and Oklahoma generally have their pick of the top-flight talent in the state of Texas, and Tuberville and his staff are going to have to change some perceptions on the recruiting trail. Plus, you wonder if part of Tuberville wishes he had bypassed Tech and instead waited on something else -- and that "something else" could've been the jobs at USF and, especially, Tennessee. Recruiting for Tuberville would've been easier at those schools.
C-plus
So let me get this straight, it appears that Hugenin's reason for giving the hire a C+ is because Tubberville is going to have a tougher time recruiting against the likes of Texas and Oklahoma, because everyone knows that recruiting in the SEC is incredibly easy?
Right now, the Rivals recruiting rankings have Tennessee at #7 in the country, behind the following SEC schools: #1 Florida, #3 Alabama, #4 Auburn and #6 LSU. That's four teams in front of Tennessee, which is great because recruiting in the SEC is easy, and the teams in front of Texas Tech? #2 Texas, #5 Oklahoma, #12 Texas A&M, #24 Oklahoma St. and #29 Nebraska.
It seems to me that Tennessee will have great recruiting classes, they always have, but I'd guess that competing against all of the other Big 12 teams ahead of Texas Tech shouldn't be as difficult as recruiting in the SEC.
Its one thing to give the Tuberville a hire based on things that he's actually done, or the job that you'll think he'll do at Texas Tech, but giving the hire a C+ because recruiting will be more difficult, which it will not, and the thought that he might have taken the Tennessee job isn't a reason on the actual hire itself.
I give Hugenin an F+ for his thought process. Click.
Miscellaneous Links: LAJ's Don Williams reports that former Red Raider Eric Morris will join the Houston coachign staff (Congrats on the job!) . . . <sarc>ESPN analysts</sarc> break down the Big 12 of recruiting, which means that they really just break down the recruiting of Texas and Oklahoma, although they do say they'll talk with Tuberville, but I can't seem to find that video . . . DTN Preview: 8:00 a.m. tomorrow :: Open Game Day Thread: 7:00 p.m. tomorrow
Looking for a Win on the Road: DT's Mike Graham writes that the Red Raiders know that they need to get a win on the road, especially after the Missouri loss, and are looking to do so this Saturday against the Aggies. Here's PG John Roberson on the importance of Saturday's game:
"It’s real important," Roberson said. "Especially since we lost to Missouri at home, we have to get that one back. This is a winnable game for us and I think we’ll get it done."
And SF Mike Singletary knows that it's what happens in conference:
"We know that they’re a good team," forward Mike Singletary said. "And we think we’re a pretty good team. All that stuff we did before conference really doesn’t matter to us right now. It’s all about what you do in conference and who you beat in conference."
One other note was that Roberson wasn't quoted, but he did seem to say to Graham that he would expect that PF Darko Cohadarevic would be back on Saturday from his 1 game suspension, but that he was unsure if PF D`Walyn Roberts would return from his ankle injury.

Return of Baseball! LAJ's George Watson writes that the baseball teams starts practice today, and despite a handful of injuries, head coach Dan Spencer is confident. Here's Watson on the injuries:
Before the first pitch is even thrown in the 2010 season, Tech will already be down four players, all of whom had reconstructive elbow surgery — commonly known as Tommy John surgery — since the middle of the fall. Gone are proven left-handed reliever Robbie Kilcrease, outfielder Nick Hanslik, who missed all but 18 games while battling an elbow injury in 2009, and highly touted recruits Zach Fowler, a left-handed pitcher, and Duke VonSchamann, who was expected to pitch and play first base. All four were injured while playing this summer.
Spencer isn't feeling sorry for himself or the team:
"There was a week of feeling sorry for ourselves when we had those guys hurt, maybe two weeks," Spencer said. "But nobody is going to feel sorry for you. Nobody cares. People have injuries, and that’s the way it goes. The percentages are with us not to get anybody else hurt."
And Spencer thinks the talent is better all over the field:
"Our talent is better, and not just on the mound, and it is drastically better on the mound, but we’re better positionally, we’re faster and we have a lot more experience positionally," Spencer said. "We have some great players in this program, guys who are going to be high (draft) picks and high-profile guys. They have a tremendous work ethic as a group."

Really enjoyed Jenny Slater's comments on Bob Davie
when she discribed him as an obvious “brazen starf@cker” siding with Team james during the Alamo Bowl.

Nice day to start baseball practice. Better wear your fur-lined jock. Better make it faux fur. You’d hate to piss off the PETA spies reconnoitering the animal labs.
Those pics of snow on campus bring back memories. Met my first serious girlfriend in a snowball fight. Do they still make huge snowballs and push them out into 19th to block traffic? Or did OSU steal that tradition?
Prunty gets more impressive the more I read about him. Here’s hoping his colleagues at Hargrave can point kids this direction.
I had to laugh at the Penn newspaper’s description of Tech:
Texas Tech is a teaching and research school offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with an enrollment of approximately 28,000.
Founded in 1923, it is located in West Texas.

I think he would
Have been better off not giving his rationale for C+. It’s about as arbitrary as the rankings for recruiting. I am very dubious during transitions…but this was a good hire (results tbd).
I think I still have a pact to go to Omaha if tech ever makes cws…it’s a good time.

I believe
1. Bob Davie should be in the Top 10. I wonder if Craig James is still to come. Maybe the three stooges will be there as well.
2. Loved the snow pictures. After growing up in Houston, that was one of the many pleasures of going to TTU.
3. After that grading of the Tuberville hiring, how can we believe any of the Stars they put on the recruits?
4. I agree Seth, I believe Tuberville has a plan and each Asst. Coach that has been hired or retained with much forethought of what he wants to accomplish. I would have liked to see more of our old ones retained but, if they prove themselves elsewhere maybe they will be back.
5. Eric Morris is another example of Mike Leach recruiting smart, hard working people. I believe he enjoys their success as much as he has enjoyed his own. He will be back.

You should really
start requesting media credentials for attending events, etc. Many bloggers are recieving them these days, and for the amount of time and work you put into this excellent site, at the very least you should not have to pay for entrance fees, tickets, etc.
This site provides more information on Tech athletics than any other commercial or school media outlet and i’d bet the reader circulation could compete with any of them as well. The monetary impact this site (inadvertantly) has in terms of publicity for school athletics is almost immeasurable, but very substantial.
I don’t bring this up because I think you do any of this for any personal gain whatsoever. I bring it up because I think media passes to events that you cover (better than the pros do) should be the very least of your compensations for the service you provide.

I've talked to the
Texas Tech media folks before and the biggest problem that the university has is the possible slippery slope of allowing some bloggers access and disallowing it for others. I understand their quandary.
Personally, I resigned myself to the thought that I’d almost prefer to have fun tailgating, having just enough drank to feel good and still remember 75% of the game. If I’m in the press box then there’s a certain amount of decorum that I’d have to follow (i.e. not be drunk) and I wouldn’t be able to cheer.
In the long run, I’m happy doing what I do. I don’t mind paying for tickets and the possible access that I could receive doesn’t out weigh the fact that I get to write just about anything I want and no one can take away my credentials because I don’t have any. If this last month has taught me anything, it’s that readers appreciate the fact that we can speak our mind here without the thought that someone may revoke certain privileges.
I would agree that DTN has stood a relatively short test of time and I think this community is really what the whole process is about. I would agree that initially I had aspirations of being part of the “media”, but I think that this outlet is as good as it gets.
I appreciate the compliments because the biggest difference between the traditional media and DTN is that it’s a true back and forth between members. We may not all agree, but the thing that frustrates me about comments on the LAJ is that there’s no interaction between the writers and the folks that read the writing. I would say that the two writers for the Columbia Tribune (Missouri) understand this concept and there is that interaction, but for 99% of traditional media writers the folks that comment don’t have opinions that count, whereas I believe that those that comment are just as important, and to some respect even more important than what I write.
It’s all about community, and I think we have a pretty cool one.

Well written and well considered thoughts.
You touched on the essence of freedom/liberty…privileges become leashes…
Something that I see in this blog is that there is really no one defending a position at the expense of another. Most people are actually expressing a thought, an idea, a point of view…that activity fills a great need for me (yes, I do have way too much spare time)…I like to talk about ideas, sometimes without showing my personal position, simply because I enjoy exploring an issue.
This is a great community and it is that way because like all projects, it reflects great leadership…well, good leadership ;-)

To be young and in college
I’m sitting at work smiling at the winter pictures from Lubbock trying to remember what it was like to have a snow day snow ball fight. Man those days were fun.
Sorry, all I got from the post is winter pictures. I can’t concentrate on the sports. It’s too cold for baseball, too early for football, and the basketball team is average at best (I give them some credit, they gave Texas a tough game).

Tired of people saying Tuberville made a mistake and wishes he could have a take back.
We are going to destroy some people this year.

myself as well
Tech is a great place to coach and an upcoming program that is well known on the national scene thanks to Mike Leach. Plenty of well known coaches around the country would love to have this job including Tuberville. USF and Tenn in my book are well below Tech in regards to where their programs are now. Tech will always be harder to recruit to over UT and OU. We will recruit just fine for our brand of football as shown in the past couple of years. Recruiting is more about finding good player that fit into your system versus all these so called rating services or popularity contests.

Ditto !
I wonder how informed Coach Tuberville is/was about coaching moves or potential coaching moves…could he have some inkling that some of them would happen?
The Tennessee job especially, K is clearly an up and comer, and has deep roots out west…USC is a great job ! What a legacy !!
The deal with some of these programs, i.e., Tennessee is working for/with the AD….etal.

Agreed
Tuberville seems a comfortable fit in W TX. In FL you are recruiting not only against the SEC but Miami and FSU as well. If getting the highly rated recruits was the criteria, ut and ou should be winning national championships every other year. Its a team game. With Tub’s staff and the talent available we are likely to slip up on some folks this year. Fine by me.

Tuberville's grade
It looks to me like rivals gave the Tuberville hire a B which I still think is low but its better than a C plus. Rivals gave a C plus to Cincy, Fla. State, and Virgina.

The article by Hugenin is ridiculous. Stating that he wishes he could bypass Tech for better options?? I could understand Tennessee but other major names turned down that job to settle for Dooley. What a ridiculous piece of journalism!!

B +
After looking at the article my understanding is we got a B+ and not a C+.

Correct, that's the way I read it also
However, I agree with Seth’s analysis, except I would give Heginin an F-. Why, because he is mouthing the same garbage as many sports pundits that give credit to Tuberville but treat Tech like some backwater school not worthy of a top 10 coach. Second, when he sees USF as a better coaching position, I then realized Huegin isn’t smart. I have been to USF and it isn’t close to Tech as a University. They have to compete with UF, UM, and FSU. Tuberville came to Tech, because he sees a lot of talent, good facilities, and the Big 12 where he can score big on defense. He isn’t dumb and knew other coaching opportunities would surface. He seemed to leap at this job. I think I would take Tuberville at his word before I accept Huegin’s BS.

I think your perception of Tuberville's evaluation of Tech is on mark.
especially the point that he may see his talent for defense being an edge.

Dont apologize Seth demand an explanation.
I have no way to accurately grade T. Tuberville. But it would appear his reasoning for taking the job was a perception that Tech was on the cusp. It has the facilities, faculty and where withal to spill over the top. OU and UT are juggernauts but they are not supermen. It would seem to me that we – the informed fans – right here on DTN – are not stupid about our team. The 2010 squad has a very real opportunity to be that "special" team. Tubs recognizes this and know he has that lasts 10 % of coaching acumen required to get the defense to shut out 3 or 4 opponents and ride the # 4 – 5 ranking right into a BCS game.JMO.
