A Look at Texas Tech Football Graduation Rates during the Leach Years

Most Texas Tech fans are well aware of the high graduation rates of the football program's players.

Since 2005, when the NCAA introduced the Graduation Success Rates (GSR) as a revised method of measuring players' graduation rates, Texas Tech's football program has placed at or near the top of the Big 12 during each and every year that the assessment has been in place.

So just how good has Tech’s performance been over the years and particularly during former head coach Mike Leach's tenure?

Star-divide

Graduation Success Rates

The NCAA employs a methodology called Graduation Success Rate (GSR).

The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained."

The NCAA evaluates graduation rates by four-year blocks of incoming classes.  For example, the 2009 reports measure the graduation rates of incoming players from years 1999-2002. The assessments may seem to lag far behind the years measured, but this lag takes into account six-year graduation cycles as follows:

  • 2009 Report (incoming class 1999-2002)
  • 2008 Report (incoming class 1998-2001)
  • 2007 Report (incoming class 1997-1999)

There are criticisms of this methodology, but the NCAA argues that the GSR methodology is a fairer way of measuring player graduation rates than the US Department of Education's approach.

For a more detailed comparison of football program GSRs, see the impressive discussion by the folks over at The Bootleg (a blog dedicated to Stanford sports).   To evaluate specific schools, you can go directly to the NCAA.org's own website here.

In the analysis below, I limit my review to the 2007,2008 and 2009 NCAA graduation reports – the years when most players would have played for Mike Leach.

First of all, a nod of respect to the top football programs.

In 2009, the FBS football programs with the top 10 graduation rates were:

1. (tie) Notre Dame, Duke, 96%

3. U.S. Naval Academy, 93%

4. Northwestern, 92%

5. (tie) Boston College, Vanderbilt, 91%

7. Stanford, 89%

9. West Point, 86%

10 (tie) Miami (Ohio), Penn State 85%

Among these programs, only Penn State finished the 2009-10 season ranked in the Top 10.  That is a remarkable accomplishment.

The U.S. Naval Academy also achieved the distinction as the only other program to finish in the Top 25.

Hats off gentlemen.

Big 12 Graduation Success Rates (2007-2009); Source: NCAA.org

Over the past decade, Texas Tech's football team ranked third overall in Graduation Success Rate in the Big 12.   Nebraska, Baylor and Texas Tech are separated by a margin of just one point.  These three programs lead the rest of the Big 12 pack by a significant margin.

Big 12 Graduation Success Rates (2007-2009 NCAA reports)

Grad_rate_1_medium

UT and OU rank last in graduation rates in the Big 12 and are in the bottom 20 of all 120 FBS programs.

Nothing more needs to be said about Mike Leach and the Athletic Department’s commitment to academics, and of course the hard work of the players themselves.  Leach might not have been able to beat Texas more than twice, but for what it is worth, Leach’s players outperformed Mack Brown's player by 30 percentage points in the classroom for a decade.

Re-Ranking the Top 25

USA Today does a neat little exercise where it re-ranks the top 25 teams based on the their graduation rates. Since the NCAA’s report came out mid-season, USA Today’s rankings only included ranked teams at the time.  Below are the updated end-of-season rankings (Inside Higher Ed conducts a similar exercise using a mock NCAA bracket approach for basketball teams).

Final Top 25 Rankings - Rearranged by Graduation Rate; Source:  NCAA.org

In case you were wondering...

For those of you who might be curious, Tuberville’s graduation success rate at Auburn was 59% during the same period (the same as Texas A&M).

(Possible theory:  Neckties were cutting off blood circulation to the players’ brains).

In unrelated news, the Tech men’s basketball team’s GSR clocked in at a healthy 48% over the same period (Division 1 average 59%).

Notes:

For those of you who would like to see a more real-time snapshot of a school’s performance, you can examine the Academic Progress Report (APR), a reporting regime implemented by the NCAA in 2005.

Another note:  I could not find a 1-120 ranking of the FBS schools.  If someone can find a list, could you please post the link on this message board.

Final note:  Tech graduation rates declined in the 2009 report,  but so did the graduation rates of Nebraska and Baylor over the same period.  I don’t have information on these declines, but thought it would be fair to note the drop off.   Fair and Balanced.

Leachs graduates

If I remember correctly Spike Dykes also had a high graduation rate when he left. That was one incorrect statement made by Leach in his ESPN press conference.

by East Redraider on Jan 29, 2010 10:18 AM CST reply actions

Spike also had two really high profile running backs

Bam Morris & Byron Hanspard. Neither had time to attend class or study, or anything like that. I’ll take Leach over Spike in this area

Do teams with low graduation rates

have more players leave school to go pro?
Do they attract the type of kid that only sees college ball as an opportunity to go pro?

Auburn Football under Tuberville and compromised academic standards.

Stanford brainiacs point to a stat called “graduation rate gaps” that need to be considered here. A snap shot from one of Tubs years at Auburn (2006) places them in the midst of some of the most academically compromised programs (Texas being one of the very worst.) Find an eye popping discussion from the link below, but this comment stands out…

“These graduation rate gaps reflect the difference between a school’s overall student body and its football players. You could think of this gap as one indication of the extent to which a school has compromised its normal academic standards for the sake of football.”

and this gem…

“Schools such as Texas, UCLA, USC, and Cal suffer from persistent academic underperformance by their student-athletes as compared to their regular students. Texas, UCLA, and USC have parlayed their academic compromises into quite a bit of athletic success.”

great find with these quotes that just confirm what everyone already knew. there are plenty of middle-road students out there who get denied at UT, but then half their football team barely qualifies for the minimum requirements to get into a community college. they love to make it clear that they are tier 1, but then take more pride in their “students” that are literally illiterate.

Thank you for this information.

I was wondering how Coach T compared at Auburn.

I hope the admin has challeged him sufficiently to keep and improve the graduation rate/ranking at TTU along with the other success parameters.

No surprises here !!

I ran into a former Texas player last week and he asked me “If I wanted to SUPER SIZE my order”…..rim-shot, LOL

We all know how much money is being made in college and pro-football. Just look at the 2009 seasons TV ratings and how the UT football program brought in $86 million last year. Is greed and profit making the OU and UT administrators overlook the graduation rates of these programs? Ofcourse !! College football is only going to get bigger and more profitable for the BCS conferences.

The question to ask yourself…..would you take a championship in lieu of a higher graduation rate?

by MFAB91 on Jan 29, 2010 11:12 AM CST reply actions

The answer is no, but. . .

that choice is not necessarily a binary one.

If you look at the NCAA champs over the past 10 years, two programs have graduation rates higher than the NCAA GSR average. Those two programs are Florida and Miami who have average GSR’s of 70% and 72% respectively (kind of changes your opinion about Miami players doesn’t it? It did mine.)

The other winners Alabama, Oklahoma, UT, USC, Ohio State and LSU had GSRs below the NCAA average over a 10 year period. Of these programs, only Alabama showed significant improvement reaching the NCAA average of 67% in the 2009 GSR survey.

Here are the numbers (sorry for the formatting).

2007 2008 2009 Average GSR
Miami 70% 70% 75% 72%
Florida 72% 68% 69% 70%
Alabama 49% 55% 67% 57%
USC 57% 54% 58% 56%
Ohio State 53% 52% 62% 56%
LSU 51% 54% 60% 55%
Texas 42% 50% 49% 47%
Oklahoma 44% 46% 45% 45%

Florida and Miami surprised me as well, kudos to those staffs when you consider how many NFL players they turn out. I would have thought aTm would be higher and Nebraska lower. Good job of putting this information together LR !!

Beautiful information

I don’t know how, but it would be interesting to see what the average grades are for all football teams each year, compared to that of the rest of the student body (re: non-athletes).

I'm guessing...

…that the dip in our rates for ’09 had to do with maybe one or two defensive players who basically flaked out or quit going to class because they thought they could leave early for the NFL, etc.

Auburn recruited from Miami University High, where diplomas are bought for $400.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/27/sports/ncaafootball/27school.html?pagewanted=1

The scam H.S. mentioned in Skin Patrols post is a factory for HS athletes in Miami that fraudulently produces transcripts. They feed athletes into programs like Florida, Florida State, South Florida, Florida International, Tennessee and Auburn. Then of course, the University recruiting these athletes has to go to some extraordinary lengths to keep the athlete in school thru creative facades like “independent study” classes and other smoke and mirrors, hence the reference to Auburns “Professor Petee”…

After reading the nytimes articles, I understand more about the SEC. Honestly, it gave me chills about our new Coach Prunty.

They better be smarter than to bring that kind of stuff to TTU….I am not saying they have or they will, they better be smarter.

I'm with you Tall Mike

I got chills remembering how embarrassed I was when the news that Hanspard had a 0.0 GPA came out. Not that Spike, or any coach is completely responsible for a few bad apples, I just don’t ever want to go back to that. Winning is great, but making these kids work for a degree is vital in today’s economy.

So Tubbs is supposed to be the guy who 'cleans up' after Leach?

If I have to hear that crap one more time…

I had no idea about the extent of these scandals. Shocking stuff. Well, its too late to turn back the clock, so let’s hope the fans and the administration turn up the heat on Tubbs now, before we start recruiting at University High ourselves

TallMike, I didn’t appreciate the parallels between those articles and Tuberville’s hiring of Prunty. That makes me nervous. Seth asked if there were hints of AAU stuff going on here. I think you and he are right to address the question now.

I would like to know if anyone at Tech or in the media will ask the legitimate question of whether Tuberville can put this past behind him and question him on how he intends to improve his performance this time around at Tech. More importantly, who other than Gerald Meyers, will stay on Tuberville’s ass to make sure that sort of nonsense doesn’t end up at Tech?

(sarc) I am sure there is nothing to this, and I should just be happy to have a coach who makes his players wear suits. (/sarc)

I think it a fair question to respectfully ask at the Recruiting Luncheons next week.

Isn’t there a body on campus that is charged with maintainly credibility in academics for athletes? One that spilled out of the awful mess that occured at the end of Coach Dykes’ tenure ? One that drew national attention for its depth and effectiveness after it was put in place as a corrective measure ?

Don't expect anyone at LAJ to ask the questions or do the digging...

But your posts seem to get plenty of circulation around Tech admin London, just based on the flames you get from people supposedly behind the scenes that “know what really happened”.

I think this is ripe for a DTN headline along the lines of your “Fact-Free Response” posting that initially got Tech so stirred up. I would bet that you’ll get more readers than the local media does anyway.

Selling your soul for a Championship

I hope I’m wrong…but it just feels like TTU sould their soul for a “Champion”.

I don’t want Tech to become UT or OU.

It reminds me of how angry I get when I see comments here, or elsewhere for that matter, that spew out the garbaage of “I don’t care how we win, just WIN”.

Well…I do care how we win. I always have.

Anyway, there is something nice about

being down by 21 in the 4th and knowing that we can still come back and win. I know that there is the arguement that if we had a better defense that we wouldn’t have the problem in the first place. But I think that the excitement factor plays a key role in this case.

Leach was never scared to bet the farm and that made football fun to watch. It didn’t matter who we where playing, we always had a chance to dominate and embarass the other team. I, for one, loved that about Tech Football. Call it typical Tech, but I still liked it.

I think Tubbs will do a good job for us, as long as he can keep that excitement factor, I’m on board to see what he can accomplish.
