SBN Box Score :: TTU Box Score :: Post Game Quotes

The Result :: I Don't Care, Texas Tech Won: It would be real easy for me to sit here and tell you that none of yesterday's result mattered. I'd love to tell you that I didn't get a tad bit emotional when the Gatorade was dumped on McNeill and the first thing he said to those players was that he loved them. I'd love to tell you that McNeill's comments about the administration after the game didn't hurt, but that doesn't mean that he just might be the best man for the job.

Quite simply, what I am telling you is that it's okay to be conflicted about how you feel regarding this entire situation and the only reason I'm saying that is because I know too.

I want to focus on the game as much as possible, but I saw a handful of comments last night voicing displeasure about McNeill giving a shout-out to the administration. I hate to break it to you guys, but there's a few things working here. First, McNeill really wants this job and it may not be a stretch to say that if he were to get this job, he would be the head coach as long as Texas Tech allowed him to be. Second, no matter who Texas Tech hires, they are going to credit the administration. It's just words and we have no idea how they really feel, no matter if it's McNeill or Tubberville or some other head coach possibility. And McNeill may know better than most in that the administration may not be in charge much longer. This is part of the game that's going to be played out no matter who is hired. If you're going to start a new FanPost each time a head coaching candidate endorses the administration then I'll ask you now not to do so because it's inevitable.

I'm as upset as the next person, so much so that I admitted to my wife the other morning that I was pretty sure I was despressed about how this entire situation and she agreed that I haven't been myself the last week. I feel like there's this divide amongst fans, which is eating away at me, whereby certain fans want you to continue to be ticked and other fans are ready to leave the ensuing drama to the courts and continue to be fans. The problem is that there isn't any right answer.

I hate the fact that I had to write a post yesterday morning about potential coaching candidates (this scheduled to be posted tomorrow morning and I've talked to the guys at the Auburn blog about Tubberville and Malzahn and they have some interesting things that I think you'll want to read), but as the guy that helps run this blog, I've got no choice but to move forward because basketball games will be played. The baseball season will heat up shortly. And the football recruiting season ends in a month.

Sorry for the rambling mess, let's get to the game.

The Storylines ::

Defensive Lapses: I'm going to give a ton of credit to the offense shortly, but I thought that the defense's biggest problem was that the safeties had one of the roughest night's I've seen in quite some time. Both Cody Davis and Franklin Mitchem bit on moves, gave up too early on plays that eventually became big plays for Michigan St. and as a result, provided a spark for Michigan St. offensively. I hate to give too much credit or blame for the play of any particular player, but I can't help but think that Texas Tech fans are accustomed to having tremendous safety play and sometimes we forget that much like any other position, these guys can have off-days as well.

It would be unfair to blame McNeill for how the safeties played on the field, but it's not unfair to blame McNeill for continuing the practice of not having any sort of linebacker or support for the defense when the quarterback takes off. As an aside, the times where the defense has trouble containing a running quarterback is when the opposing offense is in a spread formation and the linebacker picks up a slot receiver. I'm hoping like hell that this is part of the change that McNeill wants to implement in the offseason, i.e. converting safeties to linebackers. However, this still means that this is a scheme issue in that there's not even one player over the middle of the field. Perhaps this is just a cost-benefit analysis by McNeill in that he knows he's playing a team without a true running quarterback and would prefer to have that extra player in coverage. The problem is that Texas Tech fans have seen this with quarterbacks who are capable of simply walking for a first down.

Star-divide

Playing With Nothing to Lose, Part I: Statistically, the Spartans only gained 315 yards (averaged 407 for the year) and were limited to only 62 plays (Texas Tech had 85) the difference here is that Michigan St. played like they had absolutely nothing to lose and they played it extremely well. Fake punts, flea-flickers, all sorts of wildcat looks, etc. I thought Michigan St. threw just about everything they could at Texas Tech and it was fun to watch. Lots of credit goes to Michigan St. for making a bowl game incredibly entertaining, and that's really not to discredit the job that the Spartans did, but rather a compliment. It was fun, Michigans St., despite the suspensions, still has some true playmakers on offense and Cousins has a pretty good arm.

Playing With Nothing to Lose, Part II: For the first three quarters of the game, I thought that McNeill was playing not to lose the head coaching job. The commentors (no need to mention their names, right?) certainly made mention of it, but I thought that McNeill was playing like a coach who was trying not to lose a head coaching job. You may not give credit to McNeill for making the decision to replace Potts, but he didn't overrule it, i.e. he let his coaches coach. At that point, McNeill played the game to win. The third quarter was a bit of a mixed bag in that QB Taylor Potts led the team on a danged good touchdown drive where WR Jacoby Franks grabbed the 14 yard touchdown. After that, Potts struggled a bit with a punt and an interception on his last two drives. Credit needs to be given to Lincoln Riley, who realized that Michigan St. wasn't going to go away quietly, and despite the fact that Potts had actually had a pretty good game, sans the interception, Riley needed a perfect quarterback and that's exactly what happened. QB Steven Sheffield came into the game, completed 9 of 11 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown and the rest was history.

Credit also needs to be given to Ruffin McNeill for having a pair to go for it on two fourth downs, where it would have been very easy to simply go for the field goal and play not to lose. Granted, this isn't as if McNeill had anything to lose at this point, but something certainly clicked in that McNeill figured that if he was going to go down, he might as well go down swinging.

I'd also argue that the fact that Riley made it a point to give WR Alexander Torres a little swagger after dropping a sure-fire first down on a third down play decided to do the exact same thing again. Cajones. I like that.

Pound Batch: It was refreshing yet again to see so much of RB Baron Batch get the ball. There may not be a more talented player on the offensive side of the ball and McNeill/Riley could have gotten fancy by failing to keep the running game involved, but the team ran the ball 31 times for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. Batch went over the 100 yard mark rushing the ball and don't forget the 6 catches for 85 yards from Batch as well as 3 catches for 33 yards from RB Eric Stephens and RB Harrison Jeffers had 2 catches for 12 yards.

Players Seeing Time: I thought the players who did play was a bit odd. Can anyone remember the last time that WR Detron Lewis had 10 catches for a game this year (to go along with 114 yards and a touchdown)? Hasn't happened all year and his 10 catches yesterday were a career high. In fact, against Oklahoma and Baylor, Lewis had a whopping 3 cathes for 30 yards for those two games. What about WR Tramain Swindall and his 7 catches for 49 yards? Swindall hasn't had 7 catches all year long. And what about Harrison Jeffers, who seemed to be shut out of the offense a bit at the end of the season (he had zero receptions for the past 4 games)? He finished the game with 1 carry for 4 yards and 2 catches for 12 yards.

I don't know if this is a bit of a situation where some of the players who may have previously been in the Leach doghouse were now out, but the staff seemed to tells these guys that from this point forward, they would have a fresh start, that their effort on the practice field would determine their playing time in games, and they'd give everyone a fair shake.

Players Support McNeill: I'm going to get into this a bit more after today, but I would expect nothing less from this group of players not to support McNeill. I am not an insider and I have no idea as to how things "really" transpired, but what I saw last night was a man in Ruffin McNeill who I think genuinely cares about his players and players who genuinely care about him. I've alwasy told people that there's nothing wrong with showing emotion and I think that's what I saw last night. I have no idea how all of the players feel about Leach and this entire ordeal. Most likely, they are as confused as you and what they say in public may not be what they say in private, but what I can say is that I truly believe that this group of kids absolutely love McNeill. Now, I have no idea how this should play out in the coaching hire. It's real easy to dismiss the thoughts of 18 to 22 year old athletes and say that they have no idea what they're talking about, of course they do not want change and someone else might be better off for the program.

On some level, I'd agree, but the truth is that you know about as much as they do.

Unless of course you can see into the future, all we have right now are opinions, and I hope to bring something to the table for you to draw your own conclusions, but don't discount those players' feelings. They matter as much as yours and they don't deserve to be dismissed because they're not old enough to drink.

The Offensive Co-MVP's :: QB Taylor Potts : QB Steven Sheffield : RB Baron Batch : WR Detron Lewis: Yep, it's a cop-out for the last game. Potts wasn't perfect, but I thought he played with some passion and I'm looking forward between the quarterback battle next year. Give Batch the ball 20 times a game and you can chalk up a "W" and nice to see Lewis get some attention late in the season.

The Defensive Co-MVP's :: LB Brian Duncan : LB Bront Bird : DE Brandon Sharpe: Duncan and Bird's play against the run was pretty danged stellar. Other than Baker's long run, Michigan St. only had 102 yards rushing. Bird's crushing hit to stop the third down was a thing of beauty. Sharpe finished off an incredible year with two more tacles for a loss and generally harassing Michigan St.'s quarterback.

The Special Teams MVP :: K Matthew Williams: Who knew that Williams could actually kick a field goal from more than 35 yards. I don't think it's any secret that Williams doesn't have the biggest leg, but he nailed 2 of 3 field goals and for the year, he's only missed 1 extra point.

Great write up.

I would like to apologize now for the enormous amount of cursing I let loose last night. I’m still pissed about all of this. But the thing that kicked me in the throat was ESPN giving credit to James after the game. Totally uncalled for. If you didn’t read this, it is available in the 4th quarter thread. Again, I’m sorry but not regretful.

More later

I will be going to church this morning. Aside from praying for my own sins and inequities I will be praying for all those involved in the Texas Tech situation. What transpired there may affect not only Texas Tech athletics, but all athletics for all colleges across the country. As I said, I will have more later, but at the time I am torn between many thoughts and hope to sort them all out as I go forward. Here is hoping all of Texas Techdom has a wonderful New Year and we fans continue to supportive of our chosen institution.

I like your sentiment

We do not have to have a Sunday and church services to think those thoughts…they can be a seven day a week kind of thing.

The Raider Nation is going to survive…we hope that it comes out stronger rather than weaker. Yep, I am concerned with all the devisiveness currently being voiced…some of it, however justified, is sadly so ungly.

Seth – finely written post, as usual. Personnaly I see no reason for another blog but it’s a free country. For me I’ll stick around here.

I thought the game was entertaining from a pure spectator point of view. The game was sloppy at times for both teams. I thought the Michigan State coach did an excellent job considering his problems as well so he and his staff deserve alot of credit.

As for Ruff, I have no problem with his lobbying for the job. His comment regarding confidence in the Tech administration was humorous, but understandable considering he wants the job.

I know some people are leery of Ruff getting the position. I had to remind myself that Leach was an assistant coach once upon a time also. My biggest concern with Ruff would be who would be his offensive coordinator and would that person continue to run the Leach model. Considering the style of atheletes Tech has recruited and are on the team now, I would suggest that would be prudent.

I’m not sold on Tuberville. If he was that good, why is still out of coaching as being ousted a couple of years ago from Auburn?

Under different circumstances, I’d like Briles. Good coach and good guy I think. But i don’t think he’s prepared to leave Baylor.

Summerlin at Houston intrigues me but I don’t see him leaving just yet.

I see a scenario in which Ruff is named head coach and given a two year window. If he works out, fine. If not then he’s out and we start over again.

Unfortunately at the end of the day, that’s what it comes down to – we get to start over again.

Ruff as DC, Riley as OC, Someone else as HC

I think hiring McNeil as the HC would be a colossal mistake. With A&M, Baylor, and OSU on the rise, we don’t have two years to experiment with someone who is not a proven HC and recruiter. We have to win now or not at all.

Further… why is anyone excited about last night’s win? Tech beat a team that went 6-6 before suspending 14 players. And we did it in front of a very friendly crowd, and we only won by 10!

Don’t get me wrong, let’s keep Ruff at DC. He’s been great there. And let’s promote Riley to OC. That kid has talent, as Leach well knew.

But why would we want an HC that is unproven and barely beat a wounded 6-6 team in his debut when we could have Tommy Tubberville? He’s a classy guy with a 13-0 season (in the SEC!) on his resume.

Slow down, Raider Nation. Good things come to those who wait. Hiring Ruff now is just too risky, and we’ve got a long way to fall.

by battledome on Jan 3, 2010 10:53 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

See your points, battledome but . . .

Here’s what concerns me a Tuberville hiring.

If one states we have to win now, then Tuberville would need to accept an offense structured with Leach-type schemes because of the personnel we have now. I could be wrong but I don’t think Tuberville ran this type of offense at Auburn.

If Tuberville WOULD run this type of offense, then I’m on board with your suggestion. Head coaches strike me a creatures of habit and experience. Rare would be the HC who would scrap their pre-existing concept of how how to run an offense and adopt a radically different philosophy.

I like Tuberville from a prestige and past performance standpoint.

If we want a “win now” solution, I’m not sure he’s the answer for that objective.

If we want a " take two to four years to win " solution, Tuberville is probably the solution.

I've got some great thoughts from the guys

that run the Auburn blog, Track Em Tigers, that I’m going to post tomorrow. They have a very interesting perspective on Tuberville and some of our assumptions about him may not be as accurate as those who closely followed the Auburn program.

From an outsider

A few points on Tuberville.

I read somewhere on line that Tuberville got canned because he wanted to go to a spread offense featuring the quarterback rather than a run offense featuring the tailback. That was apparently deened “un-SEC-like.” That said, he always struck me as a highly unimaginative coach, which would be exactly the opposite of what you’re used to.

Also, it seems to me that Tuberville is such a traditionalist that he would never ever have had the stones to go for it twice in a row on fourth down.

I think it’s interesting at least, if not significant, that he hasn’t been hired by anyone anywhere since he got fired. (It could be that he got a stream of money from Auburn that would end if he got a new job.)

Finally, from what I read here, it seems likely that he would want at least as much money as Coach Leach was getting, and that seemed to me to be more than what the Emperor of Lubbock (Mr. Sowell) wants to pay anyone. (I guess if you don’t give a crap about Texas Tech football, you don’t have a problem hiring some guy at cut-rate prices.)

Anyway, as I said, I’m an outsider, and you can take all this for what it’s worth. Good luck.

I am excited about last night’s win because we perservered through adversity when other teams may have crumbled. I almost teared up watching the team come out of the locker room with their arms locked.

As for the HC situation, I think Ditka should be available and we all know that he could defeat a hurricane (unless it was named Ditka)

flow of the offense

Was incredibly smooth last night. With Potts it was good, with Sticks it was memorable. My memories may be sugar-coated a bit, but I can’t remember a game where every play felt like it was dedicated to Leach’s philosophy of exploiting space. The combo of runs, quick screens, and downfield passes was perect.

We all still feel mixed emotions. I’m still screaming mad at the Admin, and if they don’t give me Oscar Myers head (job) as a sacrifice (and soon), I won’t attend a single game next year. Simple as that. It did feel good to see the Big Man with his heartfelt interview talk about the turmoil and his love for the kids. I would be untrue to myself if I wasn’t able to acknowledge how much the players pull for Ruff and how much respect Ruff has for the players and for the game of football. Waking up this morning, though, it’s incredibly cloudy. I know those emotions were real, but I don’t know if it’s what’s best for Texas Tech football going forward.

Thomas Jefferson said for someone to be pulled out of the depths of poverty they had to be made to feel uncomfortable. To use this as an analogy for football and motivation, these kids are VERY comfortable with Ruff so I’m not sure it’s the best combo to put up W’s. Maybe with the right bad cop hired as a coordinator along with Ruff, we could make it happen. Maybe a coach with a history of success is the right call – I don’t know. I look fwd to discussing it.

I woud completely

agree with your first paragraph. The offense was different but I haven’t watched the game again to figure this out.

Taking advantage of our blocking advantage on the edges

The reason Torres and Britton didn’t get that many targets was because they were too busy blocking the hell out of cornerbacks in the swing/screen game, which had the added advantage of just letting Potts throw the ball, and not worry too much about reading defenses mid-play. I think Lincoln Riley reads the Tortilla Retort.

by mojavereject on Jan 3, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They used split backs more than ever!

Using split backs did not tip their hand on protection/run schemes, gave running back a lead blocker from the backfield(Batch & Stephens both ran and blocked for one another successfully), ran the screens across the flow/formation after snap and behind the QB to create assignment coverage confusion, gave the QB more time and someone to dump off to

From TTU Official Sports Report

“Down four points late in the fourth quarter, Potts said he left the game with a slight head injury, and said after the game that the doctors and coaches felt like he could not keep playing because he had lost his vision in one eye, temporarily.”

It seems the qb change was precipitated by an injury, not a coach’s strategy decision. I wonder if injury reporting will change with Leach being gone.

I haven’t read the post game report, but I thought that it was a contact lens problem. At one point, they showed him on the sideline with a trainer, and I am pretty certain he was taking the contact lens out/putting it back in. Interesting that he actually lost vision. That is generally indication of something serious. He really needs to get checked out.

The game will be replayed on ESPNU at noon today. (At least that’s what my Dish Network schedule shows.)

For those that didn’t see the live broadcast, I’d suggest the mute button or a vomit bag.

Brandon Carter chimed in after the game

But offensive lineman Brandon Carter had a message for fans: James isn’t the one to blame.

“This was not the first situation,” Carter said. “This was just the last straw. Sooner or later, something was going to come out. Adam is part of our family. Hopefully, this washes over for Adam and he can stay and he won’t have to go.”

I think you have to take all player comments with a grain of salt. As long as the guy is still on the team and considered a teammate, no one will bad mouth him. Even Riley changed his tone after he realized the kid was still going to be there.

I don’t really know since I’m just an outsider looking in. On one hand, there are several reports that his attitude if fairly common on the team. OTOH, the only such comments I’ve seen are from players who’ve been in the doghouse for breaking the rules or have been demoted from starting at some point for poor effort. If I heard the same comments from somebody like Batch, that would be a different story.

Batch

did say this:

I think the best thing for Tech and for Tech fans right now is just to move on. I looked up in the stands and I saw `Team Leach’ and `Bring Back Leach’ (signs) and Leach ain’t coming back. That’s how it is. We got what we got. We got the coaches we’ve got. We got the players we’ve got. The best thing right now is to move on and understand we’re still a very good football team with good players and good coaches.

good win last night

Our boys played hard last night and got the W. Our screen game was eating up the spartans. Yeah our run defense didnt get on the bus we the D made enough plays to give us a chance. The O was really humming last night. Potts played great, and then sticks came in to ice the game. I still maintain that Ruff is our new HC. The win was kinda sloppy but a W is a W. He and riley made some gutsy calls that really paid off. I personaly like agrressive play calling; to quote herm edwards:“YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.” Heres to next season guys.

I also like Potts heart and character, although I believe Sticks is the better qb. Lastly, I think Carter, Swindall, Perry and and of courseJames have fallen from favor with Leach, so they naturally aren’t happy with him. So those players speaking against Coach Leach is expected. There are probably others. Bottom line, I believe the administration needs to be investigated for their role. I have called, emailed, and written the Governor to initiate an investigation of the BOR and Tech’s administration. Now I think we need to move on. I vote for hiring Tuberville if he will agree to keep the Air Raid offense intact and the coaches to make that happened like Riley. Can you imagine a offense that Leach created and a defense like Auburn had under Tuberville?

I'll continue "to be ticked"

-while I fight for Hance, Myers, and Bailey to be replaced.
-root for a huge settlement for Leach
-wait patiently for Leach to coach again
-enjoy the $ saved by not going to any TTU events or buying merchandise
-enjoy the time saved by not watching any TTU games on TV

I choose to carry the burden principle and endure the discomfort of what’s meet and right. They didn’t fire my favorite coach. They did something to a man that shouldn’t be done to anyone. I can’t dismiss that just because I really want to watch the UTEP game today.

Embarrassment in San Antonio last night

Many of the Tech fans were an embarrassment last night. You walked the Alamodome grounds and set in the stands hollering "re-hire Leach" while Ruffin and your team was trying to win a bowl game. You support a moron like Leach who had no allegiance to your school. And blame Adam James for the firing; when his role was just cover for the real reasons leach was fired. And Boo the MSU band when they performed brilliantly. And, boo your quarterback when he missed a pass or two. These are just a few of the reasons we have the reputation of being pinheads from Hicksville.

This illogical reasoning for supporting Leach is not going to change one thing. Leach is gone! Myers is going to retire voluntarily this year – and not because of your behavior. What’s done is done! You have the most illogical reasoning for supporting this weird, quirky, insubordinate coach and it is not going to change anything. Add some dignity to our university and community by pulling your heads out of your rears. If you are a Real Raider fans you’ll back the Raider Nation and forget this talk of Pirate Power and Team Leach.

I'm not embarassed at all...

In fact, I’m quite proud of the support Raider fans showed for the most successful coach in Tech football history…
I don’t think it’s illogical at all… I guess your logic against it is that he’s “weird, quirky and insubordinate…”
Sounds like pretty flimsy logic to me…

Regarding McNeil’s interviews, what is he supposed to say? He was asked those questions about his position and his hopes for the future…did he slip a list of questions to the reporter?

His comments regarding his friendship with Mike Leach were absolutely clear, a very good friend to whom he feels great graditude, one with whom he has gone through much tribulation, one whom he loves.

They both know the nature of their profession…and it does not get in the way of their personal lives. Who knows, maybe some day Ruff McNeil can hire back his old HC as an OC a la Lyle Setencich !!!

There were plenty of ups and downs in last night’s game. The win is great, GREAT !! A comeback win by a fine team of players and coaches who focused on football !!! I liked it !

The televized version of it would have been so much better had there not been another word about the HC situation after half time….but it went on and on and on and on….there was a football game being played !!

I do not want Tubberville at TTU.

I do not want anyone from the pro ranks at TTU.

I want only people who have some level of understanding and great respect for the Air Raid offense…no others are qualified IMHO !! (even as I see it changing with greater imphasis on running)

Thanks Seth

…for your excellent work on DTN. You have a crazy gift to verbalize most of my thoughts. I’d like to make three further points:

1. I’m proud that the players, the remaining coaching staff and the fans showed up to support the Red Raiders last night for an great victory.

2. TT football is not going to be the same for me without Coach Leach. Even though I knew he wouldn’t coach the Red Raiders forever, this was far from a satisfactory departure. I was entertained by Leach’s uniqueness, his style of football, the national attention he attracted, and of course the success that followed. I’m going to miss him at TTU. But I also know that Red Raider football is not purely entertainment; it is competition, and I’m willing to put my entertainment needs behind the need of TTU to move on from Leach and continue to strive for competitive excellence.

3. As I mentioned in my point #1 above, everyone showed up to support the Red Raiders yesterday; everybody that is except for the TTU administration. They were busy gathering self serving affidavits on New Years Day so that they could release them to the media on game day. The Red Raiders deserve a better administration than this. The administration unnecessarily went nuclear with Leach’s firing the week of the Alamo Bowl Game and continued to add to the distraction on game day. Fellow Fans: let’s do our part to shield the Red Raiders from any further distractions and let’s somehow work to get a better TTU administration.
