Athletic Director For One Day
Congratulations! It's your lucky day. You have been named Athletic Director at Texas Tech - for one day. Even better, it is Hire the New Head Football Coach Day in Lubbock, so you get to pick your man. Here is a fairly decent list of HC candidates that are either confirmed or strongly suspected. And no, you can't re-hire the Pirate. He took a job waxing surfboards at Pacific Beach in San Diego and is rumored to be happy as a pig in mud.

That was too difficult
I voted for Ruff, I think he would maintaine the staff and momentum…maybe get a more experienced OC, one who would be able to fill in for Riley’s youth…Riley has a great future ahead, I think he is not ready.
I also like any of the ones who would use the Air Raid Offense…probably the strongest with that is Sumlin who has Holgersen as OC.
Sonny Dykes is not on my radar.
Graham over Malzahn.
NOT Tuberville, Lynn or any other legacy coach including Zach Thomas….
I am really torn with McNeil, whom I think would work hard to keep the Air Raid intact and who would give us the very best chance of having a good season next year…maybe also being the most likely person to keep the best of this year’s recruiting class together.
That thought raises the question of when will the decision be made, I think McNeil is being interviewed tomorrow…maybe that is a good sign and maybe it is just to give him the first look even as eyes are longing for a prettier girl.
I honestly see Briles, who would be a great choice also, as a long shot, almost a pipe dream.
Tubberville
I like Sumlin as a close second but I would rather have a well seasoned coach who is respected in one of the toughest conferences(SEC) and found ways to win there. Tubberville isn’t perect but kids will listen to this guy if he shows up at their HS or home recruiting. I also like the ties he has to the southeast along with Texas of course. I also think Ruffin and Riley will remain as DC and OC. Tubberville would be a great voice for TT football and you can bet he will get attention at Tech immediately. This hire would also piss aggies off everywhere. I doubt Tech would pay him but if it were me trying to fan the flames I would say this would be a good start.

NOT Tubberville!!!!
In my opinion, Tuberville would not like Tech’s existing offense after a year, and would change it – No Doubt!
Not knowing how the spread offense works, any loss (big or small) will cause him pause and Tubberville does not handle pressure with integrity. Hiring Tubberville simply does not fit for Texas Tech.

Why not???
I was thinking we could get Tuberville and he could bring in a quality DC and also nab Holgerson away from UH to serve as the OC. That would be a solid staff in my opinion. HOlgerson has modified the air-raid at UH and made it even more powerful, and with the way Tuberville could recruit quality athletes on defense and coach a defense as well would make us a force to be reckoned with.
dude thats a totally fucking epic ass great idea
but i just thats too many egos and too many dollars to fit in lubbock.
the university got in trouble because between leach myers and hance that was too much for tech and lubbock so… you know.
Fresh since 1822
When it came down to it, I had to go with Ruffin. He gives us the best chance to keep the momentum we’ve got. Sumlin was close second tho.
Bad news>>>Welker torn acl and mcl…
Really?? Wow, that’s awful. What’s the rehab time on that? These days it seems like they cut, rehab and put them back out in six months. But two ligaments. Ouch.
It was same injury Brady had
9-10 months rehab is expected

Mike Leach?
Seriously though, of what’s available, I say Ruffin for the sake of continuity, not just keeping recruits and current players, but keeping the identity TTU has. If not, I’d go with Tubberville. If nothing else, he has a good record against teams with hues of maroon.
Criag James
but seroiusly Malzhan would be the best bet to keep an offense that is close to what you have
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: DIck Lebeau, Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Chris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer
"If you give Arians a fullback, he won’t use one. Instead, he insists on using Matt Spaeth, who probably doesn’t cast a shadow because it would require blocking sunlight." Cliff harris is still a punk with some very true words
but who can trust ESPN?

I’m torn on this guys…..my gut says to go with Ruffin, but it will be somewhat Bill Stewart-esque at West Virginia. Remember that hire…..Stewart was hired after Rich Rod left after an emotional bowl game and it has been fumbling through .500 seasons the last two years. But Ruff has the heart of the players and recruits…..BUT I’m the athletic director and this is how I’m going to do it:
I’m going to hire Kevin Sumlin and make sure he keeps Ruff on the staff. I would prefer Sumlin bring Dana with him. Yes, this sounds very Jerry Jones-ish but this is how the current good ol boys do things. I’m a control AD and my HC will not have the freedom to assemble his own staff. That’s why Tuberville and Fedora were weeded out through the whole process….
If Sumlin doesn’t like my plan, then Ruff will be named HC. Press conference scheduled Wednesday before the BCS national championship.
This scenario makes me happy.....
Because it means that Gerald is no longer the AD.

Anyone who keeps our existing style of offense running!
My hire would be a coach or OC that knows the existing Tech / Leach “Air Raid” offense.
If we lose our core passing game, then we will be back to the Spike Dykes days.
You must keep the Tech’s Offensive Coordinator position in tact!
We cannot compete against OU, UT, aTm, or other SEC teams with getting top recruits (from TX or anywhere) to run the so-called regular college offenses that those teams run.
That is why Leach’s system was so innovative, productive, and recruit-able.

My initial vote goes to Briles...
But more realistically, I would have to go with Ruff in order to keep stability (what remains). Hell, even Holgerson would be good for us. Any of those but Tubberville or Sumlin!
Ruff, Ruff
Only because he would probably maintain the status quot, with very little change. I say this because it is Tech’s best chance to continue their winning ways, with at least 8, sometimes 9 or 10 wins a year. I am not sure any candidate will get Tech to a Big-12, much less a National Championship game any time soon. Mike had us on track, but when he became too rebellious this past year and his practices affected team loyalty, he sorta lost control of the situation. He is still an excellent coach and with a new start somewhere where he will actually be wanted, he will do very well, sooner than he did at Tech, as it was a learning place for him. He will make the needed improvements in his methods so I don’t think he will suffer anyway. In a few years, if it is not working out for Ruff, then there will be a few more candidates available at that time to guide Tech back into relevancy, and the new regime at Tech will make more sound decisions….hopefully.

These guys will not return to play for us next year...
DT Ra’Jon Henley, DT Richard Jones, DT Victor Hunter, DE Brandon Sharpe,
DE Daniel Howard
*LB Marlon Williams
*CB Jamar Wall, DB Brent Nickerson
*OL Marlon Winn, OL Brandon Carter, OL Shawn Byrnes
*RB Ryan Hale
**WR Edward Britton was not a major contributor
We’ve got some linemen that will need to step up quick as this is the area that is gonna be hit hardest by graduation.
Why is anyone considering Lynn?
He’s never had a head coaching job or even a coordinator’s position. He’s never coached in the college ranks or recruited.
He doesn’t run the spread.
More importantly, his son graduated from Celina high school with Adam James. They were on the same football team together.
Chris Peterson (Boise St)
Kyle Whittingham (Utah) and Bronco Mendenhall (BYU) would also be good grabs, but I doubt any of them would leave, even though Tech could pay them significantly better
by NM99 on Jan 3, 2010 9:42 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
We may possibly be able to pay better.
If Leach gets his way and ass-pounds the admin/university for every cent they have, then we can’t pay them anything close to what they are getting. We may be having to get the TX 1A high school state champion in here.
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Stewart....
I think if you check actually Stewart has won 9 games the last 2 years and we could only hope Ruff could do that…I’m torn as well because I like Ruff but…..Riley did a great job last nite and I like his new wrinkles….Tubberville if he keeps the staff and brings a SEC Defense attitude….Please no Briles—what has he ever won outside of High school? NO Dykes…..So bottom line anyone should keep the staff if the staff will stay! Wreck ’Em Tech
A last note on Leach
I have info from my bro. He said a friend was in the courthouse when Leach and his lawyer arrived for that hearing (yes, Leach WAS there). When the judge told Leach’s lawyer to respect him and his court and for him to change from a sweatsuit into more suitable clothing if he wanted the hearing to take place. When Leach’s lawyer left, Leach and the other “parties” entered the chambers together to wait for Ligget to return. Well, they all started discussing the issues and Leach told the administration reps he was going to coach the team at the Alamo Bowl. They told him he wasn’t allowed to because of the suspension. Leach told them that he was going to coach and the only way they could stop him was if they fired him……Well, we know what happened. He was fired right there, before his lawyer even returned. That is why when Ligget did return, he was handed the letter showing Leach was fired. So, Leach made a bonehead statement and got himself fired right there. As much as I have been behind him on this, Leach obviously was headed down the wrong path when he entered that courthouse without his lawyer. I hate that this happened and it does not exonerate the administration for their vendetta. I hope they do get what should be a minimum of job loss, maybe even some form of fine. Leach will win something out of this and move on, maybe the best thing for him right now. The best thing for Tech will to settle the HC issue quickly, but hopefully with a legitimate and acceptable candidate.

I hope you're just bullshitting us here.
I’m new around these parts, so I don’t know posters by their reputation.
However, assuming what you say is true, it further solidifies my opinion that Leach did not select his counsel wisely, and that ultimately played a large roll in his demise.
Number one: when you go to the courthouse to see a judge (even if you don’t think there will be a public hearing), always always always wear a jacket and tie, especially when you take your client with you, and more especially in high-profile cases where there will be media present as well as observers; and
Number two: never never never leave a client alone at the courthouse with the other party or their lawyer.
Does anybody know if this guy had been representing Mike for a long time? I can’t believe Mike’s attorney wouldn’t have enlisted the assistance of additional lawyers. He should have had no fewer than three or four attorneys with him at the courthouse, even if the junior two were only qualified to carry briefcases.
Okay, I’ll stop now. Lawyers are not supposed to talk bad about other lawyers, but Jimminy Christmas!
Oh, yeah
I heard the lawyer recently had major surgery. That’s no excuse; just another reason to enlist the assistance of bigger guns.
Hope I'm not making a giant faux pas.
Ligget’s not a poster here on DTN, is he? Hope I’m not insulting a major poster here.
lol i think everyone is just asleep...

True
I had already heard some of this before my brother said anything. So, yea, his selection of representation, whether as a lawyer or as an agent, leaves a whole lot to question. I know intelligent people are prone to do some weird things, and Leach sure qualifies there, but this one takes the cake, I think. All that and I am still a fan of his. I just wish him well as he moves on once he is done with all he is doing with this situation.
TTpilk
So, they typed up and printed a critically important termination letter on the spot?
That sounds iffy. They could have brought it with them, but it might be harder to use after the hearing if Leach wins. Plus, they don’t save themselves the $800k if they don’t fire him that day. Sorry, but I don’t think I buy this one.
I like Sumlin and or Holgerson!
Houston led the nation in total yards and yards per game. This is what we’re about at Tech. Running the style of offense we had with Leach, I felt we had a chance to win any game and come from behind in any game anytime. Man, it made for some exciting times the last 10 years.
As far as Leach goes, I feel I have been going through grief after his dismissal, it all happened so fast we really had no time to get ready for this. I know this sounds silly and I can’t believe I let this affect me the way it did. It will take time but I will get over this like everything else. I just want what’s best for Tech in the future, whatever it may be.
American farmers feed & clothe the world!
its a very interesting thing
i think hiring Ruff would make the most sense for now, and he would continue the program and air raid. but idk if he could do that full time. i can see him maintaining it for a year. but in five years when its all his kids does he a good team and great team or a bad team.
Sumlin would be the sexy pick. but i doubt it would happen, i doubt he jumps ship on UofH that quick. and you dont know if he is the man behind that offense of the OC is the man behind that offense and i doubt you could get both.
tubberville would be great to gain tech national recognition and national recruits. but the air raid would most certainly be gone. and it would take the program about 3 years to get back on its feet after that.
of course you could get some crazy. Ruffin as DC, sumlin as OC and tubberville HC. but no way in hell that happens.
Ill end with this. either you go for sumlin and that OC, or tubberville. or you make the safe bet and keep ruffin
Fresh since 1822
Ruff and Riley, NO BRAINER!!!
Having Ruff come back makes, by far, the best sense, but only if Lincoln Riley or Dana (who I doubt would leave Houston unless he is made HC) is made OC. I have read some other blogs of other schools such as LSU, and even their fans are hoping we pass on Riley as OC so they could get him. Ruff andRiley would give us the best chance to keep the current recruiting class intact, and seeing that they were responsible for most of the recruits to begin with, it bodes well for future recruiting.
Biggest mistake would be to go for Lynn. We would lose all our top offensive recruits instead of just losing Kadron Boone. As for defensive recruits, a few have already said that they plan on staying if Ruff remains, but would de-commit if he leaves. Lynn would also have a tough time recruiting in Texas where all the high school offensive studs want to play for an electic spread offense.
Tuberville also would be a dissapointment. Didn’t he try the spread last year with Chris Todd? How did that work out for him?
Here's my coaching staff
Head Coach – Woody hayes
OC – Mike Leach
DC – Mark Mangino
Recruting Coordinator – Barry Switzer / jackie Sherril
Sideline clapper – mack Brown
Jackie and Barry together could be dangerous recruiting
