Guess that 6 month probationary period didn't sound all that great to Bennie... can't say I blame him...
I’m trying to get a positive outlook on all of this stuff… but this one kind of ticks me off…
Would some of you sunshine guys please help me understand why this is a good thing…? Or even ok…?

Yeah, a probationary job
doesn’t build much confidence in job security. This way Wylie’s got something he can count on. Can’t blame him for leaving under those conditions. If he got cut loose after his 6 month probation, he’d have to wait another 6 months before any jobs opened up.

This reminds me of some advice my grandma gave me
1. Be careful around people that have never had a drink.
2. Never trust a grown-ass man in his late 50’s that still goes by the name “Tommy”.

I am afraid
You are probably correct. I have had too much to drink tonight with my bronchitis medicine to be positive right now. Please someone let me know that the High Plains Drifter will find someone to replace him in at least a 50% capacity. This is a weak sign off wreck em!
This was the last guy that needed to depart.
Not cool and not happy about this at all. They better have found somebody better…… Not possible.

This is a big blow, I think
To the overall conditioning program Tech has been able to use the last several years to shore up one of the main reasons for a team’s success: strength and conditioning. There are other people out there that are capable, but Bennie is amazing, with few who would be able to come close to matching his intensity and guidance of young boys to become solid men. Every player, especially the footballers, at Texas Tech in all sports valued his leadership, advice and tutelage. This man will be sorely missed by every Texas Tech Red Raider, not counting those new guys on the block that we fans sure did not have a hand at inviting. It is clear the decision NOT to solidify Wylie’s position with the team was absolutely the worst one this new coach could have made. I question his motives here.

bad news
The loss of leardership in the Tech condition program is equivalent to losing the captain of the ship. Tommy T you created this FUBAR with the probation think. Good luck to Bennie.
I would agree that Wylie
has helped establish this program as a place where players actually improve, and I’m not sure as to what the probationary period really meant. Maybe it was just to give Wylie time to find a new job or maybe Tuberville intended on having Wylie around for the long haul. I’m not sure that we’ll really know. I understand that this could potentially be a huge blow to the program, but I’d also like to think that Tuberville may have someone in mind that might be as good as Wylie or better or worse. This somewhat falls back to the discussion of the loss of Lincoln Riley, which some thought would be absolutely devastating (time will tell) and others thought that Neal Brown would do a good job. Again, it looks bad now but the truth is that until someone is hired and has the opportunity to perform, then it’s tough to make a call as to whether or not this is really bad, possibly bad, possibly good, or really good.

I agree. Bennie Wylie either left because he felt that his job was in jeapardy, Tubbs told him to look for another job(6 month probation), or he got a better offer from Tennessee. No question he will be missed and that he dramatically improved the players performance through his programs. I believe Tubbs wants his own coaching team in place and, as I understand, Wylie was close to Leach. This may have been part of both coaches desire to move on.
"It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired you quit when the gorilla is tired."
The real problem with this transition move is its horrific timing
A Coach in Bennie Wylie’s position does a lot in the off season. In fact it is the "season" for the strength coach. The entire focus and continuity of the program is laid on his shoulders. While the other coaches are out recruiting – he shepherds the flock. If I could name a single advantage Tech had over all the M. Sherman’s, B. Snyder’s, M. Browns, W. Muschamp and B. Stoops out in the big 12 hinterland it was the strength building factor. The EJ Holub Center and B. Wylie gave every Raider team on the field the opportunity to beat someones butt. Tubs probably has a replacement in mind but time is slipping through our fingers.

It happens....
While I will agree that Bennie Wylie is an excellent strength and conditioning coach….IN LIFE, change happens. ESPECIALLY in the world of D-1 coaching. It’s a revolving door…and everyone knows everyone.
He may have gotten a better offer. (My guess is that since’s it’s Tennesee, he probably did) If so, God’s speed to him and his family.
All we can hope for is that the next guy to fil the slot is just as good or better.
Funny how...
…all the coaches involved in the Adam James fiasco have now moved on with a helping hand from Tuberville. Didn’t both Lincoln Riley and Benny Wylie gave statements in support of Leach and calling out James on his lazy, entitled behavior?
I get wanting to surround yourself with coaches loyal to you, but given what the team went through, and publicly saying you weren’t going to clean house, you could have kept a couple of the coaches the players identified with and were comfortable with and who were highly successful in their positions.
I will support the team – I love my Red Raiders – but I am becoming more and more convinced that Tuberville does not “get” Texas Tech.
Looks like A. James may be starting this season at this rate.
There’s nothing to “get.” leach and his crew are gone. A lot if the vestiges of his regime are what some you seem to want. Why would a new coach want that? It isn’t like we’re Clemson and the new guy did away with Tiger Walk. He just got rid of coaches.
by Tech92 on Jan 31, 2010 11:02 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
There is something to “get”. The Air Raid is what made/makes Texas Tech. If Tuberville will lie about cleaning house with coaches he will lie about keeping the Air Raid.
Given Lubbock’s remote and “un-sexy” location, coaches have to use a lot of other tools to get good players to come to Tech. Removing effective coaches who motivate players beyond their normal level of play and who are respected and loved by players does not make sense. It especially does not make sense after going through such a shake up.
The other thing to “get” is that it is not always easy to lure quality coaches to Tech. When you have a good one who is loyal and successful and happy to be there, why are you getting rid of him?
I was at the Tech during the un-glory days of Gerry Moore, David McWilliams and the good but not great Spike Dykes. I don’t think a lot of the younger Tech grads/students “get” it because they have been spoiled.
I was there too. A decade of decent bowl games doesn’t really deserve this mythical status I’m reading about. Sorry. He was good, not legendary.

Only thing Mythical right now is Tubs ability as a recruiter, which was supposed to make us competitive with OU and Texas.
by raider realist on Jan 31, 2010 4:56 PM CST up reply actions
He hasn't recruited a class yet?
Do you think he recruited this class in 3 weeks? I don’t think you can judge his recruiting ability until he actually has a chance to do it. He has however done a great job salvaging this class after the head coach was fired.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Great Job?
By what standards? I’m not willing to set the bar that low. If you want to see what a “great job” is, look to the new coach at Tennessee who started with a bigger dumpster fire than Hance created at Tech, and he started later than Tuby. Here’s a bit of the latest from Rivals…
“When Lane Kiffin bolted for Los Angeles, everybody assumed the sky was falling and there was going to be no way the Volunteers would still reel in an elite class. Somebody forgot to tell that to Derek Dooley and Co. The job they’ve done is nothing short of amazing. While everybody expected the wheels to fall off, Dooley went out and helped the Vols land a top 10 class in less than a month.”

Oh, and now they have Wiley. You keep kissing Tuberville with your eyes closed though. The lower you set your standards, the happier you will be.
by raider realist on Jan 31, 2010 8:02 PM CST up reply actions
It's just not worth...
my time trying to convince you otherwise. I can assure you that I’m not making Tuberville a king yet but instead liking his job performance thus far. I do believe he has done a grreat job keeping this class together and agree with his coaching changes.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Tech92, I can bestow Leach with mythical status, say he has a horn growing out of his forehead and name him king of the unicorns if I want. To me, he was the best football coach Texas Tech has seen, and will see for a very, very long time to come. Any success that occurs over the next couple of years will be due in part to what Leach built.
Outside of football, one thing I love about Leach is that he is different and he doesn’t care. Or as Drew Barrymore would say, he lets his, “freak flag fly”. You gotta love someone who is not afraid to show that they aren’t society’s definition of “normal” but they are successful and well-loved just the same. Awesome!
So, while Leach is a legend to me, he can be just another good coach to you. You don’t have to think the way I think and I’m not going to come around to your point of view.
Give Me A Break!!!!
What is your definition of good? Decent Bowls??? At least we went to a bowl every year under Leach! What football coach has the most wins in Tech history? How many years were we ranked? How many national televised games did we play in over the past 3 years. Do your homework Tech92!!! I am not going to put Leach in the catagory of “Bear” Bryant, but he gave our football program an identity and was definitely better than the “good” label you tagged him with!!!
Funny indeed...
I could get really cynical about that… trying to refrain…

I wish Bennie the best at Tennessee! I don’t know anything about this guy but I just loved his energy on the sideline and how he was always with the players—not only the gym but on the sideline. I do agree with many of you above that we should have expected this with the coaching change and Tubs probably want to bring in his own person. I’m just hoping that the bleeding in our program can somewhat stop and we get the recruits we want on Wednesday!
BTW, I don’t think Tubs 13-0 Season would have made it that far without a good strength coach in place. I wish Bennie the best but hope Tubs has someone in mind to fill that position.
I honestly had no idea how close many of you are to the program. I had never even heard of this guy until a couple of weeks ago.
by Tech92 on Jan 31, 2010 10:59 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I am surprised
That you weren’t more familiar with him. I know that was meant with some sarcasm…. But he’s pretty hard to hide. Having said that, we have to go against my fathers advice…..trusting a man in his 50’s named Tommy.
If he has a plan and is as savvy as billed, we should be fine…..really.

A tough loss of a popular staff member to be sure....
But let me play devil’s advocate for a moment. Is it possible we just lost an irreplaceable cog in the wheel? Quite possibly. But isn’t just as likely that he will be replaced by someone as effective if not better?
Question: in the next 30 secs, without using Google, name as many Div-1 football Strength & Conditioning Coaches as you can. Hurry, no cheating! If your list is not longer than 3 or 4, it is safe to say that given the 100 or so programs out there, you really have no clue whether this move is good or bad. Don’t worry, I’m in the same boat. What you can glean from this exercise is we should reserve judgment both positive and negative until we have a new hire, and he is given time to produce. I would argue this rational line of thinking we usually apply to all other parts of our lives, be used throughout this scary/exciting transition we are in.
Good point…..who is the strength and conditioning coach for National Champion Alabama??? Uhhhhh…..who is the Head coach? Nick Saban.

Here's my logic...
If Tubs had someone better, Bennie would have been gone with Ruffin, Lincoln and the rest…
What would be any purpose in offering him a probationary period if you had someone else as good or better?
by Houston Raider on Jan 31, 2010 12:07 PM CST up reply actions
Your trying to read minds....
as Seth stated above, we have no idea what the intentions were. Bennie could have just as easily been given these months to find a job and get paid as a parachute.
Sorry, that one doesn't make sense to me...
Everyone else gets let go, but Bennie gets a “parachute”…?
That role is very important during this time of year… If you had someone better, why not bring them in and get going?
That’s what they did in every other area..,
by Houston Raider on Jan 31, 2010 1:17 PM CST up reply actions
I see your what your saying...
and the time of year may have played into why he got the parachute. To your point, that role may have needed to be filled immediately, so they could not afford to send him packing right away.
But in your same vein of thinking here, if Tubbs planned on keeping Bennie, why didn’t he give him a permanent job like he did with every other asst. he kept? Based on how he treated the rest of the staff, you can’t help but come to the conclusion he thought he could do better, or he would have given him the same deal Cumbie and Matt got.
Honestly.. I don't really want to try to read minds...
But it seems to me that he didn’t “plan” on keeping Bennie… He didn’t know whether he would or not…
My only point is if he had someone else he wanted that would take the position, it would have already happened…
At this point, it doesn’t really matter…
Just bring in the next guy and get going….
Thank you sir! May I have another?
by Houston Raider on Jan 31, 2010 1:38 PM CST up reply actions
And to my initial point...
does it even matter if you can’t prove his replacement won’t be better or worse?
I appologize Houston Raider.....the following is unrelated...
But sometimes I giggle a little as I picture DTN as the English Parliament during one of our heated debates. You know when the different guys stand up in wigs and make outlandish points, then a few like minds holler and chant, then the other side does the same. Funny picture….I digress
You make a good point, but.....
Don’t know if you ever met Bennie, but if you had, I don’t think you would have posted that. He is one of the most outstanding coaches I have ever met. He is genuine, cares about his players, and had immense respect of the players and staff (which alot of S&C coaches don’t). Can he be replaced – sure….. Will he be missed – absolutely. Guys like him come around every 10 years or so.
Sweet little 6 pound 7 ounce baby Jesus.....
Thank you for another great day in Double T Nation, and for the mediocre lunch my wife is about to prepare rather than let me go out to eat after church. Sweet baby Jesus, with your little balled up, pink, and wrinkled fists. Please forgive us cranky and stubborn Red Raider fans, we know not what we do…….but we know we hate change. Dear sweet Jesus, lying there in that manager, let us not prematurely become our fathers and grandfathers. Remind us that the stock market has actually sucked about every 4 years for the last 40 years, and we do not need to put our life savings in gold and bomb shelters. Remind us the Japanese never took over America, even after buying all that real estate in the 80s. Remind us that Cindy Crawford’s provocative Pepsi commercials of the early 90s did not signal the end of times. Further remind us that if our favorite football program, your own anointed Red Raiders, never changed coaches or philosophies, we would still be watching Nebraska run the option while laying 45 points on us at home. Give us your sweet baby grace to see that while change is scary, and sometimes bad, without it, your have proven……….we never grow.
I like to think of Jesus like with giant eagles wings, and singin’ lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an angel band and I’m in the front row and I’m hammered drunk!

Uhhhh, so I guess we just need to
move on and not concern ourselves the anything Red Raider. I’m sure that we will win the Big XII and the National Championship now that we have coaches that tawk like us and wear ties. Yeehawwwww. I caint wait for Weber State!

She said the same thing………I just finished serving burritos that would make Abuelos (the original in Lubbock) jealous!
New Coaches - Soapbox continued
I know it’s hard to accept and I personally thought Wylie was a great strength coach for Tech. That being said, I can understand a new head coach cleaning house. It’s never popular and will always leave people wondering but I’m glad he’s doing all these unpopular things now at one time rather than waiting. I sit by Benny Wylies wife and children at Tech games and have come to know them as great people. It sucks to see relationships break but all this started the day Mike Leach was fired and if you must blame somebody you can look to the bell tower for answers. This first year will be tough for all of us to accept and I’m certain Tuberville knew all of this coming into the job. Coaches have their own idealogy of what they think makes up a coaching staff. Maybe Tuberville has a strength coach he is comfortable with and feels is a better fit for the job. These are the things that happen with a changing of the guard. None of us have to like it right now but I would say expect more changes and realize this is a new staff and culture coming in. Time will tell if all this benefits our football program. Blaming the new coach and his recent methods are expected I guess but IMO are premature.

change
so if we look at this from a distance, we see an opportunity to bring in someone we know nothing about that is probably just as good or maybe better and looking for a change in life or scenery. Lets keep the glass half full and look for the chance to bring in someone that will continue to bring up the program.

Inside Scoop.....
Tubs’ Strength coach Kevin Yoxall is still at Auburn and would be the ideal candidate to rejoin Tuberville at Tech…..I’m sure Chizik would allow him to leave so Chizik can get his guy in there. This is the game coaches play at this time of year….wouldn’t be shocked if an announcement comes in the next few weeks.
BTW, he has Texas ties having graduated from East Texas State (now Texas A&M commerce) and began his coaching career at TCU.
Send beers my direction if I get this call right…..

Kevin Yoxall wouldn't be a bad move....
You got my curiosity up so I looked him up. This was a quote from a player when he was at ULCA.
“Coach Yox is real disciplined. He runs the weight room like a sergeant. When you’re in there, you’re there for one thing only, to lift. There’s no socializing, talking or resting.’’
More info…..
With his bald pate, mustache and weightlifter’s physique, Yoxall looks the part of a military man. He was an All-American weightlifter at East Texas State in 1983, then became a well-regarded strength coach at Texas Christian (1989-92) and Minnesota (’93-96).
I saw a photo of this monster on Auburn’s web site. Somehow, I don’t see baby Adam (or any other prima donna) screwing off AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT in this man’s weight room
