Double-T Nation Post Season Awards :: Offensive Rookie of the Year

This is the first annual "Double-T Nation's Post Season Awards". The categories which the DTN community will be voting are as follows: Offensive Rookie of the Year; Defensive Rookie of the Year; Most Improved Offensive Player; Most Improved Defensive Player; Special Teams Player of the Year; Offensive Player of the Year; Defensive Player of the Year; and Most Valuable Player.

The qualification for rookie of the year, both offensive and defensive, is that the player must either be a true freshman, redshirt freshman or the player's first year from junior college.

It seems to me that the offense was somewhat stagnated in previous years in that there were always offensive players stepping up, but they were usually of the veteran variety. This year, things were a bit different. This year, there were young players that made a significant impact on this team. LT Terry McDaniel was starting at left tackle prior to his knee injury and I think he had the potential to hold that position for the remaining three years of his eligibility.

WR Alexander Torres is leading the team in receiving with 67 receptions, 806 yards and 6 touchdowns. Fellow IR Austin Zouzalik is 5th on the team in receiving, catching 35 receptions, 469 yards and 2 touchdowns and had 21 punt returns for 201 yards.

When RB Eric Stephens first signed with Texas Tech, I thought that he would have a difficult time finding his way onto the field, especially with players like Baron Batch and Harrison Jeffers in front of Stephens. Stephens' biggest contribution hasn't necessarily come in the running game, although he does have 49 carries for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns, or in the passing game, where he has 14 receptions for 113 yards and 1 touchdown, but returning kickoffs, where Stephens has returned 32 kickoffs for 823 yards, setting a school record.

We are lucky

To have more than one freshman make such a positive impact on our team makes us very fortunate. Torres has to be the pick, his body of work matches most seniors at any team. It is hard though because Stephens is so electrifying, especially on kickoffs. Get the right head coach and we can really have some exciting years ahead.

Cody Davis

Put strength where I thought we would be weak this year.

Offense

Cody will be a strong pick when Seth does the defensive rookie of the year.

Thank God we have something to discuss that doesn’t involve the former head coach who shall not be named.

Badass idea Seth.

Great timing too. We had discussed opening things up for suggestion for various awards as well. Maybe some unique categories.

Maybe at the end we can start a post to give everyone an outlet to post unique, funny, creative awards.

For example (pretty weak one admittedly): Best Head Ink = Brandon Carter.

All great options

I lean toward Stephens for versatility. I know Torres was clutch, especially later in the season, but Stephens did what he needed on the field. He was great on special teams (so was Zoo!) and he blocked well enough to stay on the field the entire season (not to say Torres isn’t a good blocker, because most of our WR are).

I liked Stephens also.

Torres also had a great season, he and D Lewis had almost identical numbers for the season.

I have high regard for the way Lonnie Edwards stepped up this season at Left Guard…don’t know if he qualifies as a rookie, he has been in the program for a while and seems to be one of those solid guys who develops slowly and solidly over time.

McDaniel

may have been my choice if he had the opportunity to play in more games. I hope he has a full recovery and is back on the field next fall.

Not a Player

Dude, I am disappointed Leach is gone too, but we got to let go. This is about the players.

Easier said than done…and why do i have to let it go? I ask this respectfully….

What if I ask you

guys and gals to make this one thing about the players and not about Leach? Pretty please? I promise not to stray too far way from the Leach saga, but this is going to be the only football related posts until a new coach is hired (other than recruiting). You’d make me happy if we could do this.

This is getting almost as bad as.........

Shipley and McCoy are roommates and they fish together!

I think we could tone it down for at least one post…..

Torres

This player really came to aid our receiving game this year. He stepped in and made an impact immediately and did so in the bowl game as well. He will be a huge player for Tech in years to come.

Flash with the backs gets you some wow,

but a good steady Left Tackle is rare.

Torres Is A Stud!

I loved the way he run off and left OU’s Defensive Backs priceless.

I am not as big of a fan of Stephens

As most of you…I think Jeffers is the real deal.
Having said that, Torres wins this hands down.

I hope you are right about Jeffers

all in all, I think we kind of wasted this year for him…looking back—which is really unfair—he and we would have been better served by not playing a down.
