The Hiring of Smart as Tech's Football Coach

I just saw a wire report confirming that Gerald Myers indeed offered the job to Smart, and it was immediately accepted. There is a no-cut clause in the contract, unless for cause, for the first 3 years. Unfortunately, Myers did not offer the job to Kirby Smart, the D.C. of Alabama, and friend of Tech’s President Guy Bailey (who are also business partners with Craig James in a baby’s pacifier company), but rather Keith Smart, the former Indiana University basketball player and current assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. It seems Gerald Myers (a.k.a. one head of the Three Stooges monster; Bailey and Hance the other two) could not resist returning to the source for his previous basketball hire (B.K.).

Upon learning of their mistake, Kent Hance explained this was intentional as 1) Keith Smart raises their collective I.Q.; and 2) he deflects attention away from their self-destructive imbroglio. Guy Bailey sought the same two Tech boosters who offered the $4.0M to buy-out the Baylor contract for Art Briles to again pony-up that same amount to terminate the Keith Smart contract (remember it was a no-cut contract for 3 years, except for cause. Since Keith Smart did not do anything, there was insufficient reason for causal termination).

Tech is now looking for their 3rd head coach in less than 1 week. Stay tuned. There are reports that Myers is currently looking through the Indiana University Alumni Guide. Stay tuned!

It was Maxwell Smart...

Myers was seen in an equipment shed rocking back and forth and crying… “They said make ONE SMART DECISION!”

Good Pedigree

But would he want to stay more than two or three years. He has no ties to the Texas. That is another reason Tuberville has appeal. Another thing, this just draws the decision out a little longer and I don’t know why he would be better than Tuberville and Ruff. I am falling down a spiral staircase without a bottom.

by cweber7377 on Jan 7, 2010 3:06 PM CST reply actions

Another Point

Watch Tuberville back out with this obvious slam. Over 10 years Head Coaching experience in one of the top conferences in the country and they go interview a 30 something assistant.

by cweber7377 on Jan 7, 2010 3:11 PM CST reply actions

It's official.....

Hance has a dart board set up in his office, and the stooges are just taking turns.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:13 PM CST reply actions

That's the best way to put that.

I was going to say that they’re taken turns flinging poo at pictures on the wall. But this works too.

Now...

Smart can leverage Tech’s interest to get a gig like at UGA or somewhere else, and we look even worse… if that is possible… which it isn’t.

Don't doubt

my friend, that they can’t make this any worse.

Just going through the motions

I think the admin and AD are just going through the motions. Making sure that it appears they have interviewed serveral top canidates. But, I think Ruffin has been their decision from day one. I think Tuberviller could bring something new to the program. I’m not sold on Tuberville yet, but think he has a better shot then Ruffin. I think Ruffin makes a better DC than a head coach. I hope Ruffin will/can stay if Tuberville comes in.

What do Meyers/Hance/Bailey have in common with early native Americans?

Answer: Both sold their future for fire water and shiny trinkets.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

So you're saying...

…we do get firewater? Because I’ve gotten the shaft and the smallpox blanket, but no trinkets or firewater. Just say we get firewater… please.

by antiswarm on Jan 7, 2010 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

My ancestors got the firewater. All he have left is 40 acres in Okalhoma

Knock yourself out

I own no allegiance to the Sooner state. After all, that was our Indian land they were stealing. Frankly, I can’t believe they let us keep any at all. Damn white devils. :-)

It won't be by Mushhhhhhberger

All he can say is “Colt McCoy, Colt McCoy”

by blackbeard on Jan 7, 2010 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know...

He’s a coordinator and assistant coach for the top program in the country. Not a bad target. He has accomplished more than Ruff in the same position.

On the other hand, I don’t know why there’s so much support for a new OC that has less than one week experience in that position. What has Lincoln Riley done?

by natkcole on Jan 7, 2010 3:29 PM CST reply actions

What has McNeil done?

I would still describe the Red Raider defense as mediocre we need to dominate on both sides of the ball. That was my one issue with Leach.

by blackbeard on Jan 7, 2010 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

He has recruited.....

Scotty Young, the McRoy brothers, Corker, Boone, Griffins, etc… many who have said they aren’t coming if he doesn’t stay on. He has also been groomed by leach to coach the prolific passing attack in the history of college football, and recently led the offense to a victory in our first bowl win in three years.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Ummmm

and recently led the offense to a victory in our first bowl win in three years

We won the Gator Bowl in 2007…. just sayin….

by Boarder on Jan 7, 2010 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

+1

it was the two recent trips to the Cotton Bowl I was thinking of…….I stand corrected.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

OK

Surely….there are experienced OC’s that have recruited more than a handful of 3 and 4 star recruits and have had success with a passing style offense. And those recruits were coming to play for Leach, not Riley. And they had 30 days (?) to prep for the bowl game, most of those with Leach as OC.

I’m just saying, if Tech is going to open up it’s search for a football staff, what makes Lincoln Riley rise to the top? Leach is gone…they don’t have to keep the exact same offense. OU did ok when Leach left.

by natkcole on Jan 7, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

I went to public school so bear with me......

but I do think there is a difference in an OC who has recruited in the past, and Riley who has recruited OUR 2010 recruiting class. A class which inludes the names mentioned above who have sworn their allegance to Riley. Read Scotty Young’s comments on the coaching change.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

I would be paraphrasing.....

but he said he will have to take a wait and see approach now that Leach is gone. If Leach and Riley go, his commitment will no longer be firm.

by TTUMAR on Jan 7, 2010 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

No need to get smarmy.

In my opinion, the school shouldn’t pick it’s football staff in order to please one Scotty Young.

by natkcole on Jan 7, 2010 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

Bama gets some good recruits...me thinks.

Maybe they will swear allegiance to Smart and come to TTU.

Smart Football…..

by natkcole on Jan 7, 2010 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

Pedigree...

Smart has the background of a quality candidate except for what style of offense would he run? My guess is the same as Alabama’s and he won’t be able to recruit good enough players to line up against the UTs and OUs this way.

My guess is the Administration is just doing it’s due diligence.

Just another observation….can we get past the bashing of the administration and move on?

by ttu-thewoodlands on Jan 7, 2010 3:34 PM CST reply actions

They are doing their due diligence...

…which I hope means that they are done raping the fans and alums… diligently.

by cweber7377 on Jan 7, 2010 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

I will be shocked

I’d be shocked if we actually hire him. Right now anybody not named Art, Sonny, Bowden or Ruffin looks like a long shot to get an offer, no matter how good they are, how many conference or national championships they have won

by jef on Jan 7, 2010 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

Like someone posted elsewhere

If we developed a bad-azz defense with only 70% of the Leach offense, we would reach new heights.
For the sake of our recruits, I think Ruff must stay, but we need Tub is at the helm. On offense, give the kid Riley a shot.

by 76raider on Jan 7, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

This is not an interview as reported by Chris Level—only Bailey is in attendance at the game and only because he’s a bama graduate

by WreckerRaider on Jan 7, 2010 3:44 PM CST reply actions

What’s funny is they clearly have a big issue with our defense or the admin wouldn’t keep dropping the names of defensive coaches as candidates in our lap. But they think our current defensive coach may be a good answer.

It makes no sense. Wait, don’t reply to that last comment.
