Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 01.08.10

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I've always promised that DTN would not become political (and I'll ask that you not comment on his political leanings) but I can't pass this up:
"I think Americans today, if you placed us back in 1765, it would be the same scenario," James said. "We’ve got the American revolution taking place again."

Coaching Candidates and Interviews: So yesterday was relatively uneventful in terms of actual information trickling from the administration, but there were some events that happened that are at least making me pause. News broke yesterday that Texas Tech President Guy Bailey, an Alabama graduate, would be informally interviewing Kirby Smart, Alabama's 34 year old defensive coordinator. Per LAJ's Don Williams, Texas Tech AD Gerald Myers had this to say about the situation:
"That’s something that I’m not aware of,’’ Myers said Thursday afternoon. "I know he’s a good young coach and a good young prospective coach, but at this point we haven’t made any plans to contact him.’’
I'm not sure what's going on here. If Bailey is running the show and giving Smart an informal interview because he's an Alabama guy, but the part that mystifies me is that there could at least be some sort of communication between the principals. And if there is some communication, then please don't lie to your fans.
Also yesterday, interim head coach and defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill was "interviewed" a second time yesterday, although this second interview was characterized as "just a talk". Again, per the LAJ, here's McNeill:
"He just called me in and we just revisited what we talked about — my philosophy and what my plan would be and those kinds of things,’’ said McNeill, who interviewed on Monday. "I thought it went pretty good. There’s been some time in between, so I was pleased to have a chance to go back over it.’’
I'm trying not to be a conspiracy theorist, but this doesn't sound right. I can't put my finger on this, but something about this second interview doesn't sound right. I don't think that you interview a person and ask them the same thing a second time and I can already hear the snide remarks, I can't imagine that Myers would have forgotten between now and Monday. As always, I do not have any inside information, but I would agree that this is "just a talk", but I have a feeling that this talk may have been about something else.
Also in the LAJ article was more quotes from Tommy Tuberville, who had this to say about the situation at Texas Tech:
"After I left, I felt great about it in terms of if I did come to Texas Tech, I thought everybody was on the same page,’’ he said. "Tech has got their foot in the door. I think Tech needs somebody to kick that door in. I feel like I would work well on both sides.’’
Board of Regents: "It's Not Our Fault": I get the feeling that the emails, phone calls and letters are being heard (I plan on writing more about this over the weekend when I have more time) as the Texas Tech Board of Regents released a statement (pdf) regarding the current situation, per KCBD:
We want the record to be clear for all to understand: it was his poor judgment regarding the mistreatment of an injured player and his unwillingness to work with the University leadership that led to Coach Leach’s suspension and termination.
The BOR is blaming the entire situation on the treatment of James, and LondonRaider has already detailed that it's not about the concussions and it's not about the money, it must be about something else. The administration and the BOR would be doing themselves and everyone else a favor if they instead made a statement about everything that's happened. You are not building a very good case to your public. Simply saying that it's not your fault isn't good enough at this point. Tell us what really happened.

Game Tomorrow
Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Oklahoma St. Cowboys

Television: KAMC (Lubbock); Fox Sports SW; ESPN 360
DTN Preview: Tomorrow
Non-Conference Success: LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that the Big 12 success has been their play in non-conference play this year. Head coach Pat Knight knows that the Big 12 is a tough conference:
"I think everyone, talking-wise, knows we have the best league in the country," Knight said. "Kansas and Texas are No. 1 and 2, Kansas State is ranked, we’re ranked, A&M’s been ranked, Baylor’s about to be, Oklahoma State could be."
And PK knows that there's no problem with politicking for the Big 12 (re. the Big East last year):
"They were all saying they should get eight to 10 teams in, then that gets in everyone’s mind," Knight said. "We’re sitting there worried about getting four or five in, and we talk about we should never worry about getting six in. There should be at least six every year because of how good our conference is."

Wow
Craig James should be more careful with his words. Adam James would have been tarred and feathered in 1765 or worse.

The Myers comments and Seth's assumptions make perfect sense...
Seth – hate to repost this, but I think it will perhaps shed some light on the recent comments made by Gerald Myers:
"That’s something that I’m not aware of,’’ Myers said Thursday afternoon. "I know he’s a good young coach and a good young prospective coach, but at this point we haven’t made any plans to contact him.’’
and your comments:
“I can’t imagine that Myers would have forgotten between now and Monday.”
True story….
My father attended TTU from 1970-1974. As you all know, good ole Gerald became HC of our basketball team in 1970 – my dad’s Freshman year at Tech. Gerald had a player on his team named Steve Miller (the same name as my father).
One night while my father was in his dorm room at Murdough, he recieved a friendly call from Coach Myers. The call went over something like this:
Myers: "Steve, we’re going to be practicing tomorrow night at 7pm sharp and…."
My Dad: "Coach, sorry I think you’ve got the wrong Steve Miller."
Myers: "Oh really? Shoot, I’m awfully sorry about that."
A somewhat intelligent person might make note that the number he just called was incorrect, but not Myers. My dad says that he had the same conversation with Myers at least 6-7 times during the 70-71 basketball season. Seriously??? 6-7 times of getting a phone number wrong?
In regards to Myers quote about Bailey interviewing Kirby Smart after the game, I imagine Myers FORGOT that Bailey told him he was going to interview Smart. Hell he probably forgot Bailey was even going to the game.
Your comments in regards to Myers second interview with McNeil… He did forget!! He forgot what he had for breakfast this morning. He forgot that today was Friday. Dude just has a terrible memory period.
Hope this helps!
I had wondered wy that BoR letter used the term "profane."
My wife has made it her personal goal to see to it that CJ never sniffs political office, especially since he lives in our county, district, state.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Tell you wife thanks and I'll help any way I can.

Go figure...
That Craig James is going to be speaking in Austin about politics.
Coincidence? I think not…
In 1765...
CJ and his son would have probably gotten hung for treason a long time ago. I’m just sayin…
I am going to use ‘ludicrous’ again=CJ’s chances of success in politics. For me, not worth the effort to follow.
The story about Sowell talking to Smart makes sense. It allows ‘TTU’ to get a feel for the guy w/o becoming involved.
Whether he knows it or not, memory or no memory, the AD, under the circumstances may be wise denying any knowledge of that inquiry.
By the way, my memory for certain facts has never been worth 2 cents, yet as a Mechanical Engineer in the chemical industry, I lead a number of pretty successful projects and ended my career as an internal consultant.
The second talks with both McNeill and Tuberville sound like genuine interest in both guys, I see it as the result of a group getting together to assess their individual thoughts after the interviews and a second round of questions arising.
I am buying in on the BOR statement as well, I have concluded that it is just that simple…for those looking for a conspiracy this kind of thinking has to be disappointing, maybe ludicrous ;-), I am ready to believe that had this not arisen, Mike Leach would still be coaching. LondonRaider is accurate, it is not about money, it is not about concussion—it is more about how a person reacted in the face of an employer’s required response to a parent / player’s complaint…a very small and stupid set of circumstances.
I am going to stay out of the legal proceedings, I do not understand enough law—it is like a foreign language to me—and I really do not want to learn it.
Men and women’s basketball are starting their ‘2nd’ season, the real one on Saturday and I am anxious to see how the both match up to their expectations…the men kind of have me peaked and the women I expect to fall short at first and grow with the season. They are pretty young.
Tonight I am off to Brazosport to see the local hs girls bb play an important opponent, grand-daughter’s jv team looks to have another straight forward win, they are 17-0…the last game as a starter she got to play all of about 6 or 7 minutes because their opponent was so out classed. This level of basketball is interesting because there is a lot of improvement in individual players some of whom seem to just explode onto the scene while others—even ones who had played extremely well to this point, just fade away.
An additional thought
K Smart is 34 years old, way too young to be a HC, he is an honored assistant and may be available to Georgia as DC according to some reports.
I think it more likely that he is being considered as a DC for TTU rather than HC.
That would be...
a step down. I don’t care how you spin it.
