Recruiting on the High Plains | SG Toddrick Gotcher

I'm incredibly late with this, but better late than never.  This is the 5th commitment for Pat Knight and his 2011 recruiting class as SG Toddrick Gotcher commits to the Red Raiders.  For those of us who have been complaining that PK has recruited too many JUCO band-aids, this is five high school commits for the 2011 class.  It may not be pretty after this year, but this is the right way to build a program.

The Measurables:

Toddrick Gotcher
Position: SG
DTN Profile
Rivals Profile
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile 88 Grade
Ht: 6'3"
Wt: 185 lbs
High School: Lakeview Centennial (Garland, TX)

Star-divide

The Player Speaks:  It's been tough to find much of anything on Gotcher actually committing to Texas Tech, but there's lots of news on Gotcher.  Last year, Gotcher averaged 17.6 points per game, 2.3 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game for his Garland Lakeview squad.  Gotcher talked with The Recruit Scoop about some of his school choices and this is what he had to say about Texas Tech:

Texas Tech: “The school is also close to home,” he said. “I can be a star there and turn the program around. The coaching staff is great and the system they run is nice. The fact that it is in the Big 12 and has a great campus makes the environment an amazing place for me.” Toddrick will take an official visit to Texas Tech on September 25th.

All of this is true.  I think that Gotcher and Petteway have the ability to be stars on this team.

Gotcher was named one of the top 30 2011 prospects by DFWBasketballNews.com (remember that fellow Texas Tech commit Jordan Tolbert is also on this list) and was one of the top 3 players on his AAU team (scroll down to April 6, 2010).

Video:  No dice.

Scouting Report:  I found two scouting reports on Gotcher.  ESPN has a report, basically saying that he's an explosive shooter and scorer, but just needs to improve his strength.   The Recruit Scoop also has a scouting report on Gotcher:

A 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Garland, Texas; Toddrick is an elite three point shooter. He can shoot the rock from NBA range and has the consistency, as well. Gotcher can also get to the hole when he wants. Being ambidextrous really helps him out as he can do a lot and switch hands. His defense is another superb part of his game. Without the ball, Gotcher struggles a bit. He needs to work on that along with going off the dribble. Otherwise, he will make a school happy with his “3′s and D.”

Yes, more of this please.

Toddrick, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

The 2011 Class:  This is the first table I've put out there.  Let me know if I've got anything wrong.  Some of the prior recruits had their profiles updated (i.e. Wagner was not rated by ESPN, but he is now).  I didn't see where any basketball players are given a Rivals Rating and I may take out that column if it doesn't get updated soon.

Position Commitment Ht/Wt High School/State Rivals Rivals Rating Scout ESPN ESPN Grade
PG Kevin Wagner 5-8/145 Estacado (Lubbock, TX) N/A - 2 3 88

I have said this before

But it may be worth mentioning again. The Raiders really need to get a big (6-11 to 7-2) center. As for Gotcher, I had a schoolmate with the same last name and it is pronounced GO-chur.

I'd love to get a big

Dwight Howard type of post player, but what I think is happening is that those players are choosing other schools and PK has to try and sign other players that might fit a mold that he wants to build around. We haven’t seen any film on Tolbert or Robinson, but being 6-8 and athletic can go a long way in college. I completely agree that it would be great to have a low post scorer, but it appears that PK is getting what he can.

And in retrospect.

I’d love to have that type of player, but we’ve had 7-footers before, Rizvic and DeBem, and they never saw the floor. The thing that I want more than anything is the ability to play the game and I’d rather have high schoolers rather than JUCO’s. The thing that Rizvic, DeBem and Cohadarevic all had in common is that they were band-aids to a bigger problem, and they weren’t that great. If PK could have used them for 4 years, then maybe so, but 2 years isn’t a lot of time. And yes, I realize that Rizvic’s career was greatly affected by that elbow to the eye socket, but he was always just a big guy and not much else.

I want basketball players.

Agreed, Seth

I would really like a big guy to come in as a Frosh and learn the system so he can be a force in the future. JC transfers just don’t have time to really adapt, plus some just don’t do well at the higher level of competition, no matter how well they may have appeared to be in JC. But yeah, what we really need are athletic biggies that can fit well with what is being asked for by the head coach. As far as the head coach, Knight, as far as we can tell so far, he is learning the nuances of being in charge, but I think he still may rely a bit too much on what his dad inputs to actually be THE head coach for Tech. I seriously feel that this is his have-to year. I think a top of the order finish in conference and at least a couple of NCAA tourney wins is necessary for him to remain. If Tech only matches, or regrettably doesn’t match last year, he has to be released and a strong recruiting effort for a new coach performed. We all want Tech to be competitive, and that starts with the head coach. This will be a season everyone will be following closely with high expectations and great hope.

Oh Yeah. Tech does still play basketball.

I am so hopeful that this and other recent additions to RR BBall will return us to a competitive force. I can remember in (several) years past being filled with excitment of a winning and competitive season ahead. Today, for me, that doesn’t exist. Mens or Womens. With King Gerald stepping down perhaps we can return to former glory.

The problem is that Myers isn't leaving

until 2011. Does that mean he hires the new coaches? Are they going to name a successor relatively soon. Basically, I think the men’s and women’s basketball are both on the edge of either getting new contracts or being replaced and the women’s volleyball continues to struggle. You could make a case for baseball, but I really like Spencer so I’m hoping he stays.

How about Krista Gehrlich?

Meyers will not hire her. She has done nothing but win at WT. She was heir apparent to Marsha but Meyers said NO. Hopefully, once he is gone she will be in.

Mens BBall, I don’t know. A long road.

I am thinking the Women's program has turned the corner

with good recruiting the last two or three classes.

They are currently incredibly young, but have a pretty strong core of good players to build to winners.

I am with you, Seth, on this

For those of us who have been complaining that PK has recruited too many JUCO band-aids, this is five high school commits for the 2011 class

If anything about this class has caught my attention, it is this simple point. And with that, I am not looking all that close at the rankings…of course, it would be easier to jump with joy if they were all 5+ stars.

I like that someone-anyone, The Recruit Scoop, reported that Gotcher can and will play defense in addition to his offense.

There is a lot of commentary about the big man need.

That may be so. It certainly fits the prior paradigm for success, it works when a good one comes along.

I am watching to see what the staff can do with what they recruit. What they are going to do with this group especially.

I think there is one more scholly to give, maybe they have a beastie JC to convince to come over…or a HS’er whom they are still evaluating-persuading…or waiting till this HS season is over and leave a spot from the early signing period…or just cannot find one they can get near.

as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
