Taylor Potts has been given the keys, and he has no DD.
Yup, you heard that right. Now, let me explain.
I write this with cautious optimism (every Tech fan’s middle name, seems like). We’ve seen mediocre and terrible performances by the offense. We’ve seen terrible play-calling, terrible o-line play, and terrible decisions from a QB whom about half of DTN’ers wrote off as – well – terrible. But, unlike last season, when injuries and poor play led to the Sticks Sheffield show, Taylor Potts has not been relieved of his duties. We’ve seen Sheffield get a total of 3 plays thus far.
I don’t know what happened in the midst of that excruciating game in Ames, but something happened indeed. Be it mentally, emotionally, physically, or supernaturally – something just changed. There was timing, quickness, assertiveness, and drive in this offense. While it wasn’t enough to overcome costly mistakes that put us over a barrel, it was something to build upon.
My theory is that Taylor Potts has no "out" anymore. Last year, when he didn’t perform, at least there was a capable replacement. You see, he wasn’t forced to get better. Sheffield was his safety net. Don’t get me wrong, I sincerely believe he wanted to do great, he hated to struggle, and he wanted to win. But, he never had a chance to finish what he started. The coaches said "yeah, you’re struggling. We’ll take care of it for you," and he was benched. But now, these coaches have made it clear that they aren’t gonna bail him out of tough situations. You made some bad decisions? Tough, suck it up and make better decisions. You got sacked? Tough, learn to move around or next time will be worse. I called a bad play? Tough - use your safety valve route or get rid of the ball.
This, of course, comes with consequences. Two losses so far seems a hefty price to pay, especially with a senior QB. We’re less critical of those growing pains for young qb’s that can build on the experience for more seasons to come. I am holding onto hope that the point has been made, though. I’ll be the first to admit I wanted Sheffield to be our starting QB. I’d seen enough last year. I’d certainly seen enough after the UT debacle. But maybe, just maybe, we have a new Taylor Potts. Perhaps he’s been thrust into a leadership role that he’s finally realized he must take with this team. Like it or not, he is the QB, and he’s the leader of this offense. He’s by no means or measure perfect – no college QB is. He will struggle again, but I hope and pray to the Sweet Baby Jesus he can lead this team when that situation arises. We will soon find out.

I'm praying this is the new Potts
But realize this play was against ISU and Baylor. I’m still remembering what he did against UT. I hope he steps up to the challenge.

Often enough- big things come from little things.
Anyone – not just a quarterback, can make little changes that pays off big-time.
Say a guy commits to get a good nights rest every night. 8 or maybe even 9 hours.
In college this can make or break anyone, and it is much harder than it sounds.
The inverse is also true – A little lost sleep hurts performance in a big way.
It is easy for any human to foul this up.
Then, our random guy starts having a real breakfast.
Brain food and whatnot. Fuel up early for the day, instead of wasting half of it draggin “tail” and not being at your best.
Coffee is only the first step in the morning progression – not the last, and you must at the very least approximate a meal – real food, not junk.
Next, spending 5 extra minuets diving deep in the details reveals the vibrant colors of the bigger picture.
I was up on a ladder today with my eyeball in one crack and a flashlight in another. It saved me days of work and tons of money to truly know what I was dealing with in fine detail. It took me 5 minuets and I almost didn’t do it.
Any guy on the street can do these things and see the drastic difference in their own performance, so I would suggest something similar is the case here.
I call it giving yourself a better chance for success, but others may call it reconnecting with the basics, or whatever else.
It’s probably just the same theme, but the specifics are different and applied in a football approach that a quarterback would benefit from.
He probably just reflected on the basics that would make life better, and got them handled.
Hopefully he does not permit his bad habits, whatever they were to be an issue again.

I have always had the thought that Potts is going to start.
Even through all of the trials of last season, he has been the starter when he was ready. And I think that more in the sense of being physically ready. He was taken out of the game vs Michigan State under duress and with the comment that he was injured….I think many people wanted that to be because of his performance to that point in that game…as well as the emotion that had built over the season.
I am not saying I want him to start…I do want him to succeed…I want any TTU qb to succeed…I have mentioned in the past that I do not have a preference on who starts, I want success. Any preference that I have is folly, it does not matter.
What ever is going on with Potts, he is looking like the starter and has from the beginning of last season. This second season started somewhat like last season but without the injuries. The OL struggled, the qb and offense struggled. There has been better improvement this season because the qb is a year older, wiser, more experienced…and has not had to try to play through injury and concern for his spot. Potts’ second season is looking pretty good, just as we have seen in prior second season qb(s) whether Air Raid or not.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Shock it!
…Oh, and I have no idea what Raider289 was going on, but Shock that Monkey anyway!
... never punt
Never a dull moment for red raiders...
Good thoughts

I must disagree, if you watch the game last week
you would know that we have a new starting QB………………. Tyler “The Flash” Potts.
I just hope they let him start this week too!
