Red Raider Gridiron | Barr Out for Year; the Tennis Ball Machine Survives
Post-Practice Presser: Head coach Tommy Tuberville spoke after practice yesterday and here's the non-transcript:
Tommy Tuberville: DE Aundrey Barr was operated on his knee and will be out for the year. Hope to have him back for the spring. Everyone else will be full go for this week. Have a good game plan and need to get ready for this week. Had to do some repair work on him, but not an ACL. CB Will Ford, S Franklin Mitchem and ILB Sam Fehoko are all practicing. Have made moves on defense for injuries. Still an option to take off the redshirt and unless we feel like we're in a bind, we're not going to do it. CB Tre Porter gets himself out of position a lot, he'll play right, then left and he's just young. Plays hard and play swreckless. Will play nickel and dime. Is playing a position for a third year player. For OSU QB Brandon Weeden to come back and get his degree, that's the most important thing and it's a good rule for older players to be able to come back.
So it appears that Ford, Mitchem and Fehoko are back. In LAJ's Don Williams notebook, he also mentions that DT Bobby Agoucha will return this week, which is good, but there's no mention of fellow DT Myles Wade. I hope he's back.
For those of you looking for replacements for Barr, it's going to be a short list. Tuberville didn't give any clues as to the "who", but he did say that the defense is making moves to account for the injuries. So if you guys and gals had to guess, who might this be? Barr is listed as OLB Brian Duncan's backup. ILB Tyrone Sonier can play multiple positions and I would also think that perhaps ILB Bront Bird could fill in a few plays as a pass-rusher. Tuberville sounds hesitant to take off a redshirt for just a handful of plays, so I'll take DE Jackson Richards and DE Dartwan Bush off the list. Maybe DE Christopher Knighton?
Also wanted to mention in the above-linked notebook, it now looks as if freshman OL Beau Carpenter will keep his redshirt on this year:
With the team’s starting offensive line gaining some momentum and continuity the last three games, coaches have changed their minds about using true freshman Beau Carpenter. They’ve expected since the end of spring to play him, but now they want to redshirt him, coach Tommy Tuberville said.
The plan is to get through the second half of the season with seven playable offensive linemen — the starters, plus Chris Olson and Terry McDaniel.
Working Out Dropped Passes: LAJ's Don Williams writes that the Texas Tech receivers are trying to work out the dropped passes. Williams details how QB Taylor Potts intentionally threw to WR Jacoby Franks, after dropping an earlier pass, to get Franks back into the game. OC Neal Brown said that not having drops are important to this staff:
"We’ve done a lot of extra ball drills," Brown said. "You can’t make too big a deal of it, though. If you make too big a deal of it, it ends up being like the catcher (who struggles) throwing it back to the pitcher. They start thinking about it. You want it to be natural."
And for those of you who were curious if the tennis-ball machine survived the turnover, yes, yest it did:
"They (catch tennis balls) every day they lift," Brown said. "I think they lift three days a week, so they do it then, and during the offseason they do it. And during preseason camp, every time we have a walk-through they catch tennis balls, and that’s once a day."
Congratulations: Congrats to OLB Brian Duncan being added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List and congrats to QB Taylor Potts for being added to the Maxwell Award List. Congrats to Duncan and Potts!

Bront Bird filled in as a 4-3 DE last year when we were running thin at the position
which would mean some shuffling of Howard/Sonier/Fehoko around at ILB and I think also Langley will be moving outside to support Hyder, which means more work for Chris Perry inside. Go any further down the interior 7 depth chart and it’s all red shirts and, uh, Pearlie Graves.
The first time I heard about TTU using tennis balls machines, I thought it was a Mike Leach innovation. While it may be, I caught that it is reported that Coach Tuberville has used them for ‘years.’
Wouldn’t it be fun to give the Cowboys a good whipping in Jones Stadium ?
I am wondering what is going on with Wade. He came in with such hoopla that give the impression that he is a beast and highly talented football player and I think I read that he is not playing all that well….I fear another Perry-big-body-not-much-play-kind of guy…hope not.
Hyder may be a vialbe DE at this point, I thought Rumph had some DE potential although he may be a bit large, Langley carries less weight than Rumph. Daniel Cobb is a linebacker who is about 215 who might provide quickness and speed, he may be a little heavier by this time in the season.
I cannot see moving Bird again, he is just beginning to make his move to middle worth while. Sonier is pretty valuable filling in here and there but he is a good thought also.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Tennis balls
I’m not sure when it started in football, but it’s been around for goalies in hockey for decades. In other words, it’s a pretty common exercise to improve hand-eye coordination and, thus, highly unlikely Leach and Co. started it.
Maxwell Award Watch List
I was a “Stix Guy” but I have really been impressed with the way Potts has improved over the season. He has overcome winning over a new staff and his team mates and I believe he is starting to win over the fans too. I am glad that his hard work is being recognized on national level. Congrats TP!!

"Well I’m glad you picked us last, we put that on the bulletin board and maybe we can circle around that" - Neal Brown, Offensive Coordinator
It's not the first time we're shuffling guys around
Sorry to hear about Smith and Barr. Hopefully, some of our young guys will be able to step up.
Great news for TP.
Glad to hear that Carpenter will keep his redshirt. Hoping he can be a long term anchor like Vasquez, Ramirez and Loper were. The OL has come together over the past couple of games, and I hope they’ll be able to keep it up.
Our defense is going to have its hands full.
"This time it's different."
Seth, Yes, LAJ's Don Williams and OC Brown do read DTN on a regular basis.
I broke it here early yesterday morning about The Tennis Ball Machine. We are the official source of Red Raider Sports. And, we do provide our opines as well. Another DTN First Down.

Defense
I’m a little concerned especially without Smith being in the line up. Hopefully we can find some way to pressure Weeden. Our secondary will be sprinting all day long covering the pass so I’m hoping we see plenty of rotation among those guys. This could be a big day for Duncan at the end position. I’m sure Hunter is going to test the middle all day long. We just need to execute and eliminate the mistakes. Hopefully we can force a turnover or two.

Wary? Concerned?
Mike Graham said that – NOT Mike Gundy.
Gundy said nothing of the sort, and sounds neither concerned, nor wary, but realistic.
If anything he sounds complimentary and respectful of the team he is about to face.
Graham’s words are somehow syndicated all over the place today – and I am sure Gundy would dispute it.
Don’t tell me Gundy is chewing his fingernails and whimpering in a corner. I don’t believe this for a second. He is a man, after all, and it seems Gundy has spoken to that fact before.
Perhaps Graham needs a lecture on this from Gundy. I would like to see the look of concern on Graham’s face and HIS wariness after recieving a one-on-one lecture like that.
Or you could go on a mission at BYU or UTAH

How ironic he plays for Gundy!
At some age you would think a players intelligence gets insulted.
