INFORMATION: Detail
OPPONENT: Oklahoma St. Cowboys (5-0, 1-0)
DATE: October 16, 2010
LOCATION: Lubbock, TX
WEATHER: Sunny 78
TIME: 2:30 p.m. CST
TV: Fox Sports Southwest
RADIO: Affiliates
GAME CAST: Fox Sports

Synopsis of the Game | Another offensive shoot-out.  Both of these teams are too talented offensively for this not to be a huge offensive game, unless of course either team turns the ball over.  Because I'm a homer and I don't get penalized for continuing to pick Texas Tech, I'm going to do it one more week.  The home field advantage should prove to be significant.  I'm hoping that Lewis' less than stellar play of late (good, but not up to his potential) motivates him to come out and bust this open.  There may not be a more important player than Moore at cornerback, hopefully keeping pace with OSU's Blackmon.

Offensive MVP | WR Detron Lewis

Defensive MVP | CB LaRon Moore

Final Score | Oklahoma St. Cowboys 38, Texas Tech Red Raiders 40

Tech By Over 3

I just voted Tech by over 3. This OSU team struggled against A&M in Stillwater and was behind Louisiana – Lafayette in the 3rd quarter last week. They have several WR’s hurting. Their defense isn’t very good…..I could go on and on. This is a winnable game for Tech and one that I had pegged as a win before the season. Brown needs to stay with the pass. He’s had a tendancy to run on 1st and 2nd putting us in 3rd and short situations which we didn’t convert against Texas or early against ISU. I think he’s seen the light and knows we’re going to win with the pass. I’d like to see more of the widlcat like we did against Baylor. Let’s mix it up some on offense. The WR screen got old but our WR’s did a great job of blocking. At some point, our defense steps up and starts making plays. I like Bront Bird much more when he’s passing the rusher. With Barr and Smith out, somehow I’d like to see Bird get involved in rushing the passer but the question would be who replaces him at MLB. Getting Mitchem and Ford back will help in the secondary. Home field plays a big part here and Tech finds a way to outscore OSU. Go Tech!

I’d like to see Bront Bird “passing the rusher”.

Offensive & Defensive MVP's

Seth – On offense, my take is our offensive line continues their improved play and gives Pott’s time to throw the ball down the field and make plays. In a surprise to a lot of people, I’ll take our offensive line as the offensive MVP. I could easily go with Torres as it’s great to see him back in the lineup. The guy doesn’t drop the ball like Douglas, Lewis, etc. but I’ll stick with the O line. Maybe it’s hope more than anything. On defense, with Smith out and with us basically playing tackles at the ends, we have to somehow get pressure on Wheeden. We need leadership on defense. Defense is about emotion and getting fired up. I haven’t seen the fire and emotion that I see great defenses show. Time for a senior to step back up….great games against SMU and New Mexico but he’s fallen off lately….my defensive MVP is Brian Duncan. Whitlock is my co-defensive MVP. Need these guys to step up and get pressure on Wheeden or he’ll pick our young secondary apart. Need these guys to corral Hunter and make OSU one dimensional.

STM? No flags?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. It seems we have our old, exciting Red Raiders back. Scoring lots of points, and giving up a lot too. This is the BJ Symons game again, only this time, we’re on the winning side.

Tech wins 50-49.
OMVP: Potts.
DMVP: Scott Smith. He’ll have the best showing of anyone on D.

Scott Smith???

Before a mad scientist goes mad, there's probably a time when he's only partially mad. And this is the time when he's going to throw his best parties.

Yes. He'll have the best defensive performance.

Because the Subaru defense is going to give up a crapload of points and yards while Smith will be off somewhere smashing rocks and eating ferrets.

either way. Game is a toss up for me. I predict another year like when crabs dropped the game winning touchdown pass.

TECH 45 OK STATE 42

A&M has a better defense and OK STATE put up 38 points against them.
I think they are going to put up more points than that against us. I hope not more than 50 but thats their average. Our Offense has only put up over 50 once this year. Im hoping we see an even more improved Tech offense than last week. Turnovers will kill us.

OMVP: POTTS
DMVP: DUNCAN/ WHITLOCK

I thin Tech has very little issue moving the ball. But I don’t trust our receivers. In a track meet like most are expecting (watch it end up 20-17…) you can’t afford wasted drives. I believe that drops will stall enough drives for Tech that OSU is able to get a two score lead and we just won’t be able to force enough stops to catch up and take a lead.

Exciting game on tap. Lots of big plays for both. But OSU has one more big play maker than we do.

Like everybody I expect a shootout. Potts has been making progress and needs to have a big 4th qtr. I’ll homer it up tech 49 – osu 45.

Tech 45
OSU 28
OMVP – Torres
DMVP – Duncan

About to head out west for the journey to Tech so hopefully it’s worth the 5 hour drive. I like our chances in this one but Willis needs to bring his defense’s best.

It will be a defensive battle. OK, I can’t continue this much more. First one to 40 wins and it will be Tech. Lewis OMVP and Tre Porter DMVP.

Tech will need to score on a minimum of 8 possessions to win ...

They won last week scoring on seven possessions. The defense or special teams is going to have to step up and give our offensive at least one possession with a short field (like special teams did with NM), score a defensive touchdown like they did with UT or score a ST TD.

My Prediction:

Offensive MVP: Lyle Leong — Potts will light up the stat sheet again but the most spectacular highlight reel moments will be Leong’s. I cant get the image of Leong’s dropped catch in the endzone. THAT will not happen again. I think THIS is the payoff of having a guy with the measurables of Potts. We will discover the VERTICAL PASSING ATTACK.

Defensive MVP: Jarvis Phillips — this is a RISKY choice. If I’m wrong I will be spectacularly so. But I will give it to him or Ford/Porter. Having LaRon Moore back on the field will be like a security blanket and they will run around and make plays.

Final Score:
Pirates of the Plains – 48
Cowboys of the Copyroom – 34

cowboys of the copyroom

lol

anyways…heres what i got. We havent had a turnover in our last two games. we are poised to get one or more in this one. Im with tortilla pirate and i think that the DMVP is going to be either porter or phillips. one of these guys is gonna have a HUGE game for us. My OMVP is Leong. Fade routes for TD’s all day.

Score:
Tech: 38
OSU:35

VERTICAL patterns….go’s, deep slants, and deep posts. I think Lyle needs to make a catch for The Stache like he did for Sticks in the AlamoBowl

Close game isn't good

It needs to be a resounding victory for the Red Raiders, by 2 scores or more to remove all doubt.

If we race these two teams on magazine stats alone- things are pretty close and inconclusive.

This points to a close game. How comfortable is that kind of a win for everyone else?

by Raider289 on Oct 15, 2010 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Could care less about blowout or close. A win is a win. They are ranked, remember. And everyone here say’s we basically suck, so I’ll take a W no matter what it “looks” like.

Don't like this one.

This is a much better team than last week. Not sure if we are better than last week. Anyway Pumpkin State 45 TTU 21. They take long drives pounding the ball and wearing out our Defense. We drop the ball to much and have a weak running game with lots of three and outs. Hope I am very wrong. I was wrong last week and happy about it.

WE WIN by 14

Tech starts off where it left off last week on offense. Potts gets hot early and often. Receivers have a field day and the D gets a hand full of stops.

TECH wins 49 – 35
OMVP – Leong and Potts
DMVP – Duncan

This week the Spartans are worried about the "letdown game" after beating Michigan

Tech is worried about the “letdown game” after beating Baylor.

Just too strange of a year to feel good about OK lite, even at home. I think we had a better chance of beating Texas, OK State 49 – Tech 37. Coaching is the difference in this one.

Thin the players are feeling that way? Or the fans who think we’re a better program and deserve more than the reality of situation…

You mean the letdown? Maybe I should say Tech SHOULD be concerned.

Wish I had the sense that the players feel the urgency now that they seemed to have before the Baylor game. The big sigh of relief after that win planted that seed of concern for me, but maybe our guys are still focused.

+1. It seemed like the offense came out pissed off last week and capitalized on it. I don’t know if they were pissed because we lost the week before or were trying to prove something but I liked it until the 4th when we went conservative which might have paid off except for that delay of game. I think Brown has to keep it wide open this week. For some reason my gut tells me this will end up like the 08 game where we just dominate the hell out of them.

by ST04 on Oct 15, 2010 10:34 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Last week was an indication that this offense can be awesome

But consistency will allow it to win more games. Likewise for the other two areas-defense and special teams. With any luck at all, the whole team discovered something about themselves in the last couple or three games. If Neal Brown also learned anything, we will be seeing a Tech offense that we all recognize for the rest of the year. If not, inconsistencies will reign, as will losses. So, I am not at all confident Tech can win this one. They must overcome themselves to be able to beat a very good Oklahoma State team. Hopefully, home field will be the advantage.

I've never seen us win in Stillwater

And never seen us lose to State in Lubbock. I’m on a roll with games I attend. after watching us lose up there last year, we beat KU, Bu, won the Alamo, beat Bu again, so I’ll be there looking for 5 in a row tomorrow. I’m in lovely Vernon, Texas for the evening and I can actually se stars, I love CFB road trips.
