Red Raider Gridiron | Depth Chart Changes and Fan Reaction

Send Some Good Mojo:  If you haven't heard, Rutgers' DT Eric LeGrande injured his spinal cord in a game against Army this past Saturday and he has no movement below his neck.  You can send him your good thoughts here.

DTN Rules Reminder:  I hate doing this right after the LeGrande note, but it seems as if everyone needs a reminder on my only real rules, which are: don't be mean; and don't call people names.  This goes for players, coaches and other DTN users.  I'm asking you to comply because it makes my life easier, and normally, I'm not at all around DTN during the day.  If someone breaks the rule, then click the "action" link on the comment and "flag" the comment for being inappropriate.  Generally speaking, I'd appreciate if you read what I wrote back in September of 2009 (you know, when fans thought that Texas Tech was losing games it shouldn't):

I think you could also add to DTN's lone commandment, that what you say to your fellow DTN'ers in the comments be something that you would say to them in their face.  If you're not willing to do that, then think twice before about posting.  It's easy to hide behind the facade of a username, but keep in mind that we're all on the same team.

So when so many things happen, like they have over the past two weeks, we as a fan base will invariably all have different opinions about the direction of the program, the coaching decisions, the plays on the field, etc.

I think and I hope that DTN becomes and is a place where we can all have that bar conversation.  Perhaps the unintended consequence about losing two games to two ranked teams is that we, as fans of Texas Tech, are a lot more passionate than we were two years ago.  I think that's great.  When I'm dead and gone, I hope that DTN is the same type of community where Texas Tech fans can gather where the community polices itself and lets others know that being passionate is completely within the rules, but being an ass-hat is not.  I know, that probably means that I'll have to distinguish that gray line between passionate fan and ass-hat, but you guys are free to call a spade a spade.  Let someone know that something is not tolerated here.  We should have a higher standard than message boards.  We should be accountable for what we say.  I'm not looking for anyone to self-appoint themselves as DTN master-of-all, but let's all push each other to be as good as we can possibly be.

Depth Chart Changes:  I posted this late yesterday afternoon, but it appears that there's quite a bit of movement in the depth chart for Colorado, especially on the defensive side of the ball:

I actually like the move of Whitlock to defensive tackle as it might give him the opportunity to get into space a bit.  Agoucha is a guy that has come on quickly since being reinstated at Texas Tech.  He just might be the strongest player on the team and he's certainly got the size.  I think the coaching staff is trying to force a double-team with Agoucha at the nose guard spot with the thought that this might create a one-on-one matchup for Whitlock.

Interesting to see Fehoko as the backup at defensive end.  He obviously doesn't have the size, but there's no doubt that DC Willis is wanting to get faster on defense, which leads to the change at Sam linebacker.  Even seeing Bullitt's name at a linebacker spot is a little shocking and it's also interesting that Daniel Cobb has essentially been passed over by Peak.  Essentially, DC Willis is wanting to get faster, much faster at the linebacker spot.  With a bigger nose guard and defensive tackle (getting Whitlock at DT, you add 20 pounds and Agoucha at NG, you add 40 pounds), the thought might be that the linebackers will be better able to get to the ball.

In the secondary, there's quite a bit of movement and I'm surprised that Porter is getting the nod at safety.  He's played lights out for two straight games, so him playing isn't a surprise, but I am surprised he's playing at safety.  At some point, Davis is going to have to cover someone and not let the receiver get past him.  With Ford seemingly injured for an extended period of time, he's been removed from the depth chart for the time being.

Would love your thoughts and half-arsed theories.

So much more after the jump, including some articles on fan reaction.

Star-divide

Fan Reaction:  There's a couple of articles here:  LAJ's Don Williams, Matthew McGowan and Adam Zuvanich.  You should just read all three articles rather than me trying to take a bunch of blockquotes.  Here's just a bit:

Head Coach Tommy Tuberville:  "I like fans to be adamant on winning every game," Tuberville said. "We want everybody to be selfish. We want to win every game. I’m used to winning a lot of games. Our players like to win every game.  We take a different attitude as coaches, because we see from inside out what we’ve got to do and how we’ve got to do it. I want people to be interested in what we’re doing. There’s a lot of things that people don’t understand, but for us to get to the point where we want to get to, sometimes you’ve got to take a step backward before you go forward."

RB Baron Batch: "One of the things I’ve heard a lot is people saying, ‘We want Leach back,’ or ‘They made a mistake getting rid of him,’" Batch said. "The players love the coaches we have. The coaches are amazing, amazing coaches, and that’s what hurts, the work we put in over the offseason and the stuff we did to become a good football team. … Everybody is on board and looking forward to getting back to work."

Chancellor Kent Hance: "While none of us — the coaches, players, fans or leadership — are satisfied with our record at this point in the season, we have total confidence in our coaching staff and student athletes," said Kent Hance, Tech’s chancellor. "Coach Tuberville is a proven winner and a great coach and all of us will be rewarded for our patience as he and the team continue to work hard every day to compete at the highest level."

Re. Hostile Fanbase | This isn't the first time that Tuberville has had to deal with a hostile fanbase.  It's part of coaching and I get the feeling that he understands that fans want to win.  He wants to win, just like any coach or player.  And if some of you really believe that Texas Tech is just a stepping-stone for a bigger job, then it makes sense for him to win as quickly as possible.

Re. Players | I still don't get people bitching about the players either being on board with the current staff.  Scholarships are one year renewals that can be terminated at just about any time.  It's tough to transfer in football, which is why you almost never see it.  If you have a player that's a redshirt freshman or a sophomore, then maybe you transfer, but you almost never see transfers in football unless it's to transfer to a lower division to not lose a year of eligibility (i.e. Sam Houston St.).  Just doesn't happen.

So if the players are essentially locked into a school, are they supposed to say that they think the current staff is shitty and they hate them?  That makes a ton of sense and despite the fact that this is what you want them to say, this is completely different than what the smart thing to say.

There's also the strong possibility that some of the players didn't like Leach.  It's okay not to enjoy the company of another human being.  I've said this a handful of times, but sometimes people don't always get along.  Some people don't like me.  Some people probably don't like you.  It happens.  If Batch of Sheffield like Tuberville more than Leach that doesn't make them bad human beings and if your point is that they should have known, that Leach was the best thing ever, then you're wrong.

If you think this is true, then I'm sure that you're always right about everything that happens in your life and you've never made a bad statement or a bad decision.

Let's not throw stones at players that didn't or don't have any options.

Re. Firing Tuberville | I said this on Sunday and I'll say it again, Tuberville, at a minimum is going to have three years to see if he can't get this thing on track.  I'm not making this statement as if I agree with it because I don't necessarily want to sit through 3 years of bad football, but unless something drastic happens, this is what you got and this is what you're going to get with any hire.  So those of you that want Tuberville fired now, good luck.  And I'm not being sarcastic about that.  Send your daily email to those that you think it will have some sort of affect, but I can promise you that commenting on DTN that Tuberville should be fired isn't going to get him fired (yes, DTN is not influential).

Miscellaneous:  Sorry that I don't have time to address all of these articles, but I've got some personal things to get to this morning.  LAJ's Don Williams writes that year one at Ole Miss, Auburn and Texas Tech are similar (this is really a Q&A with Tuberville) . . . LAJ's Don Williams with three positives and three negatives . . . LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes that Tuberville is not on the hot-seat . . . FWST's Dwain Price with a Texas Tech notebook . . .  SB Nation's Spencer Hall with this week's alphabetical for week 7 . . .

Press Conference:  Thanks to the DT, I had not realized that they had video of the weekly press conference:

Monday press conference 10/18/10 (via DailyToreador)

Colorado Buffalo Links:  I don't have time to link to specific articles, but DTN will try to hook up with The Ralphie Report later in the week and you can check out The Daily Camera for news on the Buffs.

I like where this is going. I have thought that Fehoko on the end was a good idea to get speed out there. Duncan is just too valuable in the middle. I also thought Bird on the end might work too.
I like seeing Peak, Porter, and Bush on the roster. These guys are real athletes, and burning a red shirt to get the best players on the field is probably a good move at this point. I’m surprised that Porter didn’t replace Davis at safety.

Not that I know anything but returning to a base 4-3 (mostly) would seem like a good idea

In the remaining 6 games it’s got to be as simple a scheme as possible to maximize every shred of talent. When you hear a guy like Tuberville talk about a defense “straining to get turn over’s and 3rd down stops” it really equates to stopping the bleeding, controlling the pace and maximizing the opportunity to get to the magical 2 x scores up point and play downhill. Parcellian.
Defensively the Tech Coaches want to impose exactly the start OSU put on us on to this weeks oponnent.
Look for a variation of the bend don’t break mixed in with some twist stunts versus the Buffs. In extremis there is only the training and skills you have stored up. Be instinctual to allow the most speed of reaction.

No chg from OSU

I thought the same thing about chg from 3-4 to 4-3 this week then looked at the depth chart from OSU. It looks like position-wise it is still the same.

That is why Seth was able to make the 1 to 1 comparison for the selected positions.

They were listed the same way against SMU too.

Rutgers, Depth chart and other stuff

Eric LeGrande get well soon. I’ll keep you in my prayers for a speedy and full recovery. The kid has a long road ahead of him.

Depth Chart – interesting. I like the Colby to DT and Bobby A. to NT combo. Bullit to SLB. Is he big enough weight-wise to play this position. He will definitely add speed as will Neboh backing up DJ. Let’s hope this line up equals a Red Raider victory in Boulder.

This time last year, Tech fans were feeling good going into the A&M game and the Aggies were hoping to just not get embarassed. The Aggies came to the Jones and put the “Fightin” back in Fightin’ Aggies and spanked the Red Raiders.

This year neither team has much confidence or consistency going into next week’s game. Who would you call the favorite at Kyle Field?

I think we should award the winning coach of next weeks game in College Station, "The CEO Trophy"

I think its a dead heat. Both programs have stubborn coaches who just want to play a certain way. Both coaches are trying to put a round peg in a sqaure hole. Should be lots of fun.

If we play anything like we’ve played in the first 6 games, A&M wins with ease. This team could easily be humiliated again by A&M. Tech would have to do a great deal to win that game at Kyle Field.

With only 9 players on the depth chart...

… no wonder the D sucks so much! I may have missed your mention that they were omitted intentionally. How about: LB – Bird/Hubert & S – Davis/Dewhurst?

That still makes me wonder where Hyder, Barr, Cobb, Ford have gone. Injury? Demotion? Overslept next to their fat little girlfriends? I am sure some are injured like Will Ford, but I must have missed the other injuries. Or this is a bigger shake up that it first looked.

It either improves the D or we see a bunch of guys running circles when their mind is thinking CB while they are playing LB. (exaggeration)

One more suggestion for the depth chart is removing Julius Howard. This guy is invisible. Maybe you can argue that he doesn’t do anything to hurt you, but at the same time he does little to help. Let’s face it, this is a rebuilding year. Get a younger out there to gain some experience. Remove lame duck Julius, he is not a difference maker and won’t be around to (not) help next year!

The best players aren't playing

I went to Boston to visit my son in his family this weekend and didn’t have the opportunity to listen/watch the game. I also received an email from my brother who has given up this year on the Gators for much the same reason I read here on our blog – no aggressiveness or emotion. After reading the post game comments, missing the game was a blessing.

I have been a Red Raider fan since 1968 and ain’t going to change now. We will weather this storm, have seen good and bad years, and will see Tech rise again. It won’t be this year, and maybe not next, but it will. Why – because the expectation and support by the fan base is as strong as I have ever seen and we will not tolerate anything else. The facilities are first rate and the reputation Tech has garnered isn’t going to wane. Hang in folks.

I read Coach Ruffin’s and Riley’s effort against North Carolina State. That is where Leach’s offense went. Tubberville should bring back Riley and dump Brown. Why because he truly understands the Air Raid run by Leach, recruited many of these players, but most important, he has turned a boring program into a high scoring machine.

The defensive woes are traditional here and this year I expected it to struggle more, especially switching to the 3-4 and introducing more complexity. The players recruited don’t fit to this scheme. The good news is the young secondary and the incoming recruits and those who red shirted. These folks are high motor and aggressive. It will be much better next year and I have confidence in Willis.

We lost to a good OSU team; the remaining games will be up and down as the beginning, so brace yourself.

Agree

This is one reason I have more patience for what Willis is trying to do. He doesn’t give excuses and he is willing to shake things up to try and get results. Why not do that with the offense when things aren’t clicking during a game?

I’m definitely not against these changes… I’ll look forward to seeing how things work out with great anticipation… I’ll be cheering for every one of those guys out there on the field…
But if you’re making this level of change at this point in the season, you’re in pretty bad shape…
While I will keep hope alive, I don’t think it’s very reasonable to expect things will get significantly better in the immediate term…

defensively. I’m glad some players are being reassigned to other positions that utilize speed. I’m still concerned about the right corner position with DJ Johnson. I think that and the MLB position are where are biggest weaknesses are. Offensively, I’m just hoping coach Brown can figure out how to win against possibly the worst team in the Big 12. I’m not convinced Tech wins this game on the road from what we’ve all witnessed so far this season. I’ve always slated this CO game as a loss and I hope I’m wrong. I could really care less what these players think of this coaching staff or Mike Leach for that matter. I tend to think that this locker room has gone soft and I would rather hear that these players are getting reemed on a daily basis for their performances to date. Lastly, I would also like to say that my thoughts and prayers are with Eric LeGrande and family.

It was a good time for you to address the emotion on the board. Its getting a bit rough! I just hope we dont end up being the comments section of the AJ. This is generally a place that was strong support for the team and positive attitude about the program.

That's because the Jones Stadium cameras are all still standard definition

They won’t buy high definition cameras until this summer. Next year should look better. I go to the games with a person who runs Fox 34 and she was explaining that since the stadium broadcast center is at the United Spririt Arena and the network TV broadcasts are managed at the football stadium, there will be no way to put the HD network broadcast on the stadium screen. That sounds like a lame excuse to me. If Fox Sports is in the stadium broadcasting the game in HD to the world, why can’t the Texas Tech audio-visual nerds figure out a way to pipe that HD feed to the pretty new TV screen? Nothing is impossible.

Everyone around me loved the bigger TV. Though it is not HD, it seemed like the color was better.

When they have the electronic ads there is not much of a difference like you said, but the replays/footage are nicely larger when the ads are taken off.

We are moving the ball. The run game is going with Stephens, we are actually putting some drives together which is something that we had not done before the Baylor game. The play calling is getting a bit more creative, the wildcat touchtown vs Baylor was a great call, some of the screens have returned althogh the execution isnt great. Lots of the problems can be traced to Potts not hitting guys in stride as other guys mentioned.

The defense is falling apart but considering that after the first eight minutes OSU (one of the top offenses in the country) only scored 13pts in 52 minutes of play thats not too bad.

You can all be bitter and upset of what should be and what couldve benn. You can decide what type of fan you want to be, but you have to recognize that all programs have ups and downs. Florida, Texas, USC all recent national champions are having down years. The successufl programs expect to return to wining. The programs that end up down for decades (like atm) bicker, infight and get out of the winning mindset. Lets not be that kind of program.

by Gus Mitchem on Oct 19, 2010 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I think we all have the winning mind set you mentioned but we’re concerned where the program is headed. It’s hard to just view this as a new coach in year 1 issue when your given a talented and loaded offense to work with on day one. Certain things are apparent at this point and our offense being the main disappointment. I think if we all saw more emotion coming from these players and coaches we might feel better. Leach would have Brown on a short leash by this point and Potts would be yesterdays news. It’s pretty clear to me that Brown is in over his head and Potts is only going to get you so far as the QB. This season is a bitter pill to swallow after such a successful run. I do think making a change to Sheffield starting at QB might ignite this offense and possibly salvage the season. I also think that would only be successful with somebody such as Cumbie calling the plays. Brown is a bigger problem than Potts.

Yea its a damm shame, especially considering the experience advantages we have(had) over almost all the other teams in the south and I really feel bad for those SRs and JRs. I just wonder if Tubbs has is nose in Browns ear with the running plays, it just doesnt seem right then it finally dawned on me while at the cotton bowl. If your a defensive minded guy then you want to rest those guys and not score in eight seconds ! But that totally goes against what we expect as fans. I always thought he was being conservative but he is really resting the D. Seems to me that the team with more points wins either way.

not what I saw...

I took my son this week to his first football game in Lubbock. I told him all week what a great place for a game it is and how rowdy the Jones gets. Wow, did I over sell that. I saw a stadium full of seriously disillusioned fans. Everyone I spoke to not only did not think we would win, but seemed disconnected from the team. Kind of “they don’t care what we think anyway, so why should we care” was the attitude I saw. I could see it most in the response to the poor play of Potts in the first three series. He made bad reads, never seemed to get past his second progression and looked terrified to be on the football field. But no one really seemed to boo or really object to his play. The folks I talked to kind of felt like there was not point in getting emotionally involved because it simply does not matter. Potts will continue to play, the offense will continue to sputter, the defense will stay with a system its personnel does not fit and get exposed, and the fans will continue to wonder what is in store for Tech football. I wound up having to tell my son that we are just in a down year, and that when I was a kid and I went to games with my Dad, and Tech was not very good then either but we love them and root for them anyway. Welcome back to mediocrity and relevance was basically what I said to my kid. I am not seeing the improvement you are. I have seen nothing but inconsistency and regression over the course of this season. I sure hope Tubbs really knows what he is doing and is truly committed to this thing…

by dryroastedsean on Oct 19, 2010 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Well a large part of the Potts and the offense’s rough start was that the receivers dropped/missed so many balls. This happened at least once in all the first few series. The later drop on the flea flicker play killed me.

A closer game at the beginning and a better start would have energized the crowd.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 11:22 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Watch where the balls go

It’s where Potts puts his passes that cause drops & kills yard after catch. His screens either go high or go low, but never hit the reciever in stride. His 10-20 yard passes are always bullets. That’s where the most drops happen. And on the occasional long ball he almost always overthrows it by 5-10 yards. I’ve been seeing these patterns for two years now. Are the coaching staffs blind? Yeah you’re right about the cause of drops, but all the passes I was referring to hit the receivers hands. It’s just tough for me to get upset at the QB if it hits you in the hands you don’t catch it.

But I agree placement is huge. Like you said Potts passes are bullets which makes it more difficult and tough to catch especially if not properly placed.

I just read all three articles regarding fan response ...

and I just have to say “nice coordinated response” from the administration. Three different articles from three different reporters with three different perspectives all on the same day.

Did Hance dust off his political playbook from yesteryear? And for the AJ to go along with it? Really?

All I saw were excuses, softball questions, and a political blah, blah, blah endorsement from the Chancellor. There is as much disconnect within the Administration and the newspaper as there is in D.C. to the rest of America.

There are two types of people in the world: those who make excuses and others who find a way. We clearly see which camp our HC is in and his apologists at the AJ.

See how intelligent people with legitimate complaints about the CURRENT GUY are being binned the same way as screeching protesters about the OLD GUY? See what they did there?

This is what the administration thinks of you and I and other -people who are judging Tubs by his own output and don’t give a damn about Leach. No way any of us could possibly be intelligent and have a valid opinion.

What garbage. How disgusting.

So, me? A fan? Of tech football? When this is they think of their fans? Fuck that.

Just remember: If you disagree with ANYTHING they say or do all you could ever amount to is one of those fool Leacher know-nothings.

Bird

Is it just me, or has the biggest disappointment of the year on D been Bront Bird? I think I’ve seen him make ONE play all year against Baylor with a TFL. He seems to get either pushed around a lot or just plain lost in the shuffle instead of plugging holes and blanketing RB’s out of the backfield. Thoughts?

by JohnGoTech on Oct 19, 2010 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

Bird is a HS football player plain and simple. He may have some tackles this season but it’s usually after being dragged down the field 5 to 8 yards. A good majority of these players can’t finish tackles. Duncan and Witlock need to give clinics to the other 9 players.

He does make big plays like last Saturday’s huge tackle for a loss on 4th and nice interception.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 11:25 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Look at his overall body of work over the first six games. He’s a gang tackler and does little with man coverage. He gets credit for piling on from how I see it. Johnson made an interception in the end zone but that doesn’t make up for his lack of play getting burned by Baylor and OSU’s Blackmon.

I was referring to Bird’s solo tackle on 4th down and the Bird interception (nothing involving Johnson though his interception was impressive). Someone above said Bront hasn’t made but maybe 1 good play all year, so I mentioned those 2 just from last week.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 12:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Bird's pick

the problem with Bird’s int was that it occurred on 4th down. He should have just batted the ball down. By making the int he had to return the ball 25+ yards to get back to the original spot of the ball. Sure it looks good in the stat sheet, but it was not a smart play.

Good write, Seth. You have a great perspect for DTN.

The depth chart changes reflect injuries and the need to get somebody on the field….and perhaps some other thinking for the game vs Colorado.

I am surprised with the movement of Agoucha to starting NT…he just passed Wade who came in with such attention and such high expectations. Agoucha arrived a couple years ago as a project, failed, went to another school at a lower division and has returned to pass all the guys vying for pt…although some of them may be too injured to play anyway.

The moves at linebacker look as much to be moves of desparation as need for bodies. Some of those guys were planned to be redshirted, now we need them.

We now have our two prior prime middle linebackers playing completey different roles…and our current middle linebacker plays as if a great middle linebacker tackle is a bear hug….grrrrr…the boy weighs 250lbs+ throw your weight around, become a hammer, make a hit !!

The secondary is fraught with injury, so those moves make more sense.

I watch games from the tv only. That means I do not see what is happening in the secondary on defense. It also means that when Davis pops into the screen getting beat that I do not know what happened that put him in that situation. He is playing safety, what happened on the field that left him hanging. What technique is he being asked to play, is that the best techique for his ability? When a coach puts a guy on an island, he is going to get beat now and again. If he is not an island kind of guy, he is going to get beat more often. In principle this applys to every player on the team, the coaches are making the calls, based off the schemes they teach.

as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.

Eyes towards the future

I would like to ask realistically when is the right time to take a look at making a change under center? I am not even asking for the switch from Potts to Sticks. I am saying with this year looking more and more like a throw away, when do we start to groom the quarterback for next season? Potts has show what he is. Tubbs has shown that no matter how poorly Potts is playing (14-0 UT, 28-0 ISU, 21-0 OSU,) he will not pull Potts in hopes of a spark from Sheffield. So as a fan I am ready to move on and start preparing our next QB so that next year does not create the same stench that this year has. Why are we trotting Potts out to play mediocre to terrible against good teams, and steady but unspectacular against lesser teams? I cannot find a logical argument for continuing down this path for the rest of our season. Don’t say he gives us the best chance to win. A can of green beans would have given us the same chance to win against OSU and may have been able to read OSU’s cover 2 more quickly.

Sit the best guy for doege or karam?

If he did that we would be in even more outrage!

I see what you’re saying about, but the best guys have to play. Sitting Potts, Duncan, Batch, Whitlock, or any sr to develop younger guys is ridiculous and hurts team chemistry/unity.

This team is still playing to be bowl eligible. They aren’t sitting Potts for some younger guy.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 1:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Completely disagree that we should go younger and start Karam or Doege.

This is what was originally suggested. Nothing suggests the younger guys are better.

Potts (QB rating between 151.5 to 139.3 from ’07 to ’10) is better at this pt than Doege (rating of 123.9 in ’09 & played against only KU, A&M & K St) and Karam (great piano player but never taken a snap).

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Could they have done any worse than Potts?

Atleast the younger QBs would get some experience through the losses and get better with time, so by next season we would have dependable QBs. With Potts we get the same level of crap that we had the previous year and this is his last year. Who knows, maybe Doege or Karam would have played better under the circumstances atleast taking that chance is better than playing with a QB who we know cannot win big games. Also, Doege and Karam have come a long way since 2009. They had a fairly good spring game and may be I am wrong, but I don’t think they could have done any worse than Potts is doing right now.

Your funny (0 interceptions, 65% completions, 117 QB rating for game)

Good luck having a successful program when benching your best players or other srs! That’ll look great for the recruits in our 14th ranked recruiting class.

People booed Graham Harrell in ’07 and loudly cheered when Potts replaced him in ’07 for a few series against Mizzou then later booed Harrell again and asked for Potts again. These illogical, un-statistically supported thoughts occur almost every year.

Potts is an amateur athlete (not Manning or Brady). I’m not turning my back on someone just because their #s were ONLY slightly above avg 1 week.

Yelling for backups who haven’t played a snap is like yelling for Barabbas.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you mean Chris Todd?

“People booed Graham Harrell in ’07 and loudly cheered when Potts replaced him in ’07”. Did you mean Chris Todd and I think the booing happened in 2006 and not in 2007. It took Graham one season to get back on track. Also, we saw a progression of improvement with Graham. With Potts is the same thing every year. Bad throws that noone can catch, missing open coverages, backfoot throwing etc. Stuff that nobody can coach you on. The result is also the same as last year, we keep losing the big games because he can neither lead nor motivate our offense. As for 0 interceptions and 65% completion, I would rather have a QB who completes a few touchdowns rather than pad up his own stats.

by jef on Oct 19, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

No, referring to the booing in '07 at the Mizzou homecoming game

Potts came in after Harrell threw to 2 pick 6s on 2 straight passes. I think Harrell had 4 or 5 interceptions during the game. Potts came in for a few series, but never through a pass.

You’re right though, Harrell turned out to be great. Tech fans were wrong and had no stats to support their beliefs. That is my argument in this silly debate between starting Potts vs. Karam or Doege while we play to be bowl eligible.

by tech 09 on Oct 19, 2010 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Your information is incorrect

It was 2006 and not 2007. The QB was Chris Todd and not Taylor Potts. In 2007 we played in Columbia not in Lubbock. 2006 was Graham’s first season and 2007 was his second. We finished 7-5 (2006) and 8-4 in 2007.

have a 3-3 start again next year with more apathy and a true feeling that this ship is sinking. The investment in seeing what kind of game Potts will have this week is a poor investment. Give the time to someone else that will be here next year, and give us a chance to not get off on such a shitty start in 11.
As for our recruits….that would excite them that this staff doesn’t just give the nod to the guy thats been here longest. Matter of fact, all you hear is that he needs his guys there.
IF….and only if you were all for this youth movement on the defense….you should be open to it on offense. We are not going to have jack shit after this season for all of this loyalt to Potts….who I think is a good kid and better than he was last year (you remember the year when he had to be bailed out 3 times).

please tell me you did not just make an analogy that would make Taylor Potts the equivalent of Christ. Yelling for Barabbas…Really? Does that seem like a bit of an overstatement to you? You sight his last performance as being slightly above average. I disagree, when the game was slipping away from Tech, in those first three series, Potts was 4 for 13. He had the same kid of performance against ISU. Started out very slow, and once the game was out of hand, he starts to complete passes. It seems to me like he does not perform well under pressure. He gets tight, can’t make quick reads, throws absolute bullets when touch is required, and looks like he wants to crawl under his bed and hide. Once the other team drops the hammer on us, and he feels like he can’t lose the game for us anymore, he starts slingin’ the ball around like he is Kenny Stabler.

At some point a coach has to use the best of his resources. Not sure this is Potts. Evidently, Sticks didn’t make a strong case for himself prior to the season. Doege probably got more reps during the spring due to injuries to Potts and Sheffield. He’s not a true freshman…..I don’t see giving Doege a shot as being a huge risk.

not all seniors

I want to be clear in that I don’t want to bench all seniors. Batch, Duncan, and Whitlock are all integral to any success we have had this season and benching them would hurt the team badly. I cannot say the same for Potts. Benching him would have a minimal impact this season, and could pay huge dividends for next season. It is just my opinion that the risk of benching a middling senior quarterback is far outweighed by the potential reward of giving valuable playing time to an underclassman.

Why do you blame Potts for the inconsistent play? They are all playing bad – offense, defense and special teams. Actually, the whole team is inconsistent. Sometimes the offense or defense is playing lights out, then they go to sleep.

Have We Given Up

on the onsides kick?? I was deeply disappointed in the coaching staff’s refusal to try for the onsides kick in the OSU game. Surely, the circumstances dictated its use at some point.

On the issue of change, it is time for Sheffield or some other QB to be given the starting nod. Potts is not winning games for Tech. We have seen enough to know he is not going to win games for Tech against rated opponents. Whoever plays that position needs to run 3-5 times a game and needs to make quick reads on his throws. Potts will not do this.

The defense didn’t play great against OSU, but the game was lost on offense, not on defense. 17 points will not win games against ranked opponents in the Big 12.

Thoughts on Backer Basics + Basic defense

Playing inside backer in a 50 front is very difficult. Moving someone into this position from an OLB on a 4-3 defense is an exceptionally difficult move for anyone. Bird is the victim of the move.

Keys change- I’m not sure if they key backs and under-key lineman or just key lineman but numerous reps are needed and game reps are a must.
On flow to them he must be able to take on a charging guard if they have B gap responsibility and stuff him back in the hole. If they have C or D gap responsibility then they must be able to scrape downhill and not overrun the ball.

A good backer will learn when he needs to go over the top of a cutoff block or if he can cut underneath or need to go through or cut the blocker.

Then he is asked to read play action and find a drop zone or pick up a back man-man (Bird probably caught on to this easily since he was an outside backer.

Another issue is moving Duncanm. I haven’t looked at the stats but hasn’t he been involved in fewer run play stops because of his position switch.

The general rules of the 50 defense for the running game require that the defensive linemen be good enough to occupy a gap and an Olineman inside of them so that the Oline can’t get to the. backers

I know we still have a chance to fall flat in the rest of our games but I am hoping for some miracles so we don’t lose our bowl streak.

by TotalDef on Oct 19, 2010 4:46 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

addendum

And oh yes to be an inside backer you need to have a little bad-ass in you. You must have regard for life or limb because bodies will be coming at you from all directions.

Imagine yourself moving from an outside backer spot where things come at you from only one direction (except for the occasional crack block), the moving into the inside backers position. Actually Bird is probably lucky he is not dead at this point.
