* Post-Practice Press Conference
Tommy Tuberville: Good to be back on the field. Have some guys that are going to have to play this week young guys. Offensively, we have guys that just need to go through a week without contact. Beautiful day and we know what we have instore for us in Boulder. Christopher Knighton is going to play, Tahrick Peak, Brent Dewhurst and need to get Franklin Mitchem healthy. Bobbie Agoucha is going to play this week. Probably have 30 blue jerseys. Cut back in contact about 3 weeks ago, and you know about the mid-point of the season. Sheffield is back at quarterback and he thinks he likes receiver. Trying to get him over to linebacker or free safety. Tre' Porter is getting better at safety, he made us look like first-year players. Starting to play a little faster. The receivers, some have played off of us pretty good, sometimes you have to break a tackle and make a play. That's big in any passing offense.
RB Eric Stephens: Very good defense in Colorado. We are just trying to stay focused on the game ahead. Went 0-10 and 2-8 in high school. Have to take it one game at a time. The running game has gotten much better and it's been successful, must get the offense on the same page together. Been practicing hard lately. Receivers are doing a great job of blocking down the field. Running backs are just reading what they are supposed to read. They have good defensive backs, average linemen, they hustle.
S Tre' Porter: Told himself to step it up a bit, not play like a freshman. Rotate all of the positions, and easy to rotate to safety. Pretty good to get so much playing time in only 6 games. They trusted me when they came in to recruit me. They will run the ball until death do you part.* LAJ's Don Williams | A little YAC would go a long way for Raiders

I just read the weather forecast for Saturday's game at Colorado;
Partly cloudy and breezy. Breezy, our HC said in his post game presser that we can’t throw the ball in the wind. Does that mean that since Sticks is a running quarterback that he will replace Potts at some point on Saturday.

Disagree with Tubs if that is truely his attitude about wind. Leach loved playing in windy games and believed practicing in windy west Texas gave Tech an advantage.
It’s all mental, if you tell players they won’t have as much success in certain conditions, they probably won’t have much success.

Pretty sure he mean they couldn’t go downfield as much into the wind…something that we have always struggled to do. Would be nice to see the ball in the air for 30-40 yards a pop from time to time. And be completed.
+1
We have to make opposing defenses respect the deep threat. Taylor has a cannon for an arm, so it’s not like establishing the deep threat is impossible.
Long ball require either the o line to block
for an extended period of time or for the qb to move the pocket and buy time….he can’t do the 2nd. All of his deep balls will be fade routes or timing routes. We are limited.

this week it will be the ole "thin air" excuse..........
page 33 of the coach’s excuse book………..near the bottom.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
In the YAC article, check out this bomb that Detron Lewis lets slip:
"I don’t attribute it to … our athletic ability," Lewis said. "It’s the scheme coaches go into the game with, us running particular routes, and I think that’s the cause of us not having as many yards and yards after catch as we’d like. It’s nothing on the coaching. It’s nothing like that. It’s just the scheme we go into the game with."
Lewis says the passing attack is "the same stuff" Tech used in the past, but shorter routes have been selected for some game plans.
Seems like the players are pushing back a little.
The rest of the article, Brown moans, groans, and dumps on the kids … publicly. I don’t know how productive it that is, I think that type of critique ought to be handled internally and externally Brown ought to say we just aren’t playing well and we are making adjustments to play better. What are your thoughts DTN?
Someone made a good point that don't expect players to make negative comments about the coaches
because they want to play, and scholarhisps are a year to year award. However, as the season begins to unravel, we can probably expect more slips coming our way. I would hope and expect that coach Tubby does hold his players accountable, but in a private way.
Leach aired it with the media. That’s what made him so much fun. Last year, after the Houston debacle, Leach did right the ship. I don’t know if a lot of people expected us to win in Boulder this week, especially in a place we have never won before, but if we come out 3-4 and 1-4 in the Big 12, and the we get humilited in College Station, its all gong to start to come out.
Lets hope that we can start a new tradition this weekend.

shorter routes
I noticed this in the OSU game. The offense looked the same in many ways, but I did notice that on the first 3 series that all of our receivers, even in 5 wide sets, seemed to be running routes at basically the same depth. I was shocked not to see at least one stretching the field. I don’t know if this is a product of reads the receivers make on their routes or not, but it allowed the OSU defenders to just play behind the routes and then break like hell on our receivers once the ball was in the air. I also thought they might be running the shorter routes to help out Potts with two things. One possible reason is to help getting through his progression more rapidly and the second reason I could see deals with the fact that Potts tends not to throw to a receiver until he is open. What I mean by that is he does not seem to have very good anticipation of the moment when the receiver will come open to catch the pass. Lot’s of QB’s struggle with this and literally wait until a receiver is totally open, which results in late throws and less YAC, or throws forced into coverage hoping the receiver comes open. There is a fine line between a covered receiver you should not throw to and a covered receiver should throw to because there is about to be an opening. I think that ability to throw into windows is what separates good QBs and great QB’s. Here the shorter routes allow for Potts to look at each route/receiver to the end of their route in a shorter time frame. Problem is you better have at least one wide open receiver each play, and Potts has to have time to get to him in his reads. Just theories on my part…

There must be a really fine line between throwing into coverage and waiting till a guy comes open.
I guess it is whether or not the ball is caught on throwing into coverage, if coverage is tight and the pass is complete it was a great pass….if it is tight and the pass is not complete, well, he threw into coverage. Recievers are supposed to catch a football, they are supposed to go after it. Catch it with their hands, adjust if it is high, low, in front, behind. I am putting a lot on the wr’s at this moment because I believe the current qb had kids in HS who could catch his passes, other than Leong.
From the other stuff I have read from the coaches about pass protection the shorter routes may be to allow the O-line a break on protection.
If the routes are shorter, there is then a element of that helps the opposing D…the field cannot spread as much…sounds as if the coaches are trying to make up a lot of ground for the recieving corps, when they should be the ones making it hard on the D.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Detron
Sounds like Detron has come to realization that his draft stock is at zero and the Neal Brown offense is killing this team.

Is Tubs losing his team?
I want Leach back so bad. He lost teams and won 9 games.
“Sheffield is back at quarterback and he thinks he likes receiver. Trying to get him over to linebacker or free safety.”. That is so confusing. So what position is he playing now?
by ST04 on Oct 20, 2010 8:34 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Tuberville was joking about the move to defense, I was in a real rush this morning. When Sheffield has played this year, it’s been as a wideout for a handful of plays (I think).
Go Raiders . . .

or does he mean back up at QB?

okay then that means he's still backing up Potts
Thought for a moment with Potts sprained jaw and whatever is up with his thumb that Sticks was finally going to play.

But they are committed to Potts and the run

You are good with the company line. So good you could be the spokesman for the team. wouldn't you love that job. Only better job would be spokesman for the chancellor.

I am a smart ass....
I worked 20 years in corporate America and now work for a 12 person company that we all own. I don’t plan on spewing any company lines for the rest of my life. I am knocking on wood (my head) as we speak.

Stupid question...
in Tub’s comments… what is a blue shirt? Is that a term used for an injured player or for someone who suits up, but doesn’t play? I don’t think I’ve ever heard that term before.
However, it the player is a blueshirt AND
has a blue tie, the THAT is something special

Someone not to be killed
Think clothelined from the Longest yard….they don’t want that happeninig to the blueshirts. If that is the case, what color does Nancy wear?

He definitely had brown stains on his backside
after the one one pass attempt/hit in both the UT game and the Baylor game. I truly think if Tubby would have a public flogging of Nancy, it would buy him 3 years of peace and quiet.

I am wondering ...
if all the physical contact that they have been enduring since two-a-days is taking a toll on their bodies. They are getting so beat in practice that they can’t perform in the game.
I know that Tubs said they stopped full contact three weeks ago, but it makes me wonder because the body is only able to absorb so many collisions (think of being involved in multiple miniature car wrecks every day) before it just begins to break down.

Might have the same effect on other teams that have been used to winning...

Scrappy Mentality == West Texas Mentality
I liked Batch’s blog (article).
I especially liked the following sections:
“When the "scrappy" mentality sees a cup left out, whether it is half full or half empty, it asks, "Are you going to drink that?" because the "scrappy" mentality doesn’t know when its next drink will be. The "scrappy" mentality takes nothing for granted.”
/////
“If it was important enough to start, it is important enough to finish. Don’t quit. Hold on, cling to what is yours until your fingers cramp, and once your fingers cramp switch hands.”
/////
I am glad Batch reminded the world about the Rutger’s player and his spinal injury.
My prayers are for him and his family.
