Post Game Thoughts | Texas Tech Red Raiders 27, Colorado Buffaloes 24

THE RESULT | RELIEF, YET AGAIN | If there's any indication as to where I'm at in my fandom, it's that I'm relieved any time that Texas Tech wins. Obviously, I didn't get to watch the game, but I took a ton of notes throughout the game. Drive by drive. I'm posting them after the MVP's and hopefully, for those of you who didn't follow the game, can read that recap. I'm not proof-reading them other than spelling errors.
I had mentioned in the prediction thread, that I thought the offense was still inconsistent, but that Texas Tech would figure out a way to grab a 2 point win. Well, Texas Tech ended up getting a 3 point win, so this game, no matter how it turned out, is what I expected. There's no doubt that the offense and defense will be inconsistent all year because they have been inconsistent all year. This team is what it is, which is still good enough to beat some teams and I still think that this team has an upset in them.
So at the end of the day, I'm relieved, yet again, that Texas Tech was able to get a win. Wins don't come easy, so any time you get a win, hopefully you can celebrate a bit. And this week's performance wasn't good enough for this team to get complacent. The things that have plagued Texas Tech continues to be the case. There's plenty of room for improvement.

THE STORYLINES
WHY DOES EVERYONE INSIST ON THROWING THE FOOTBALL WHEN TEXAS TECH DIDN'T THROW THE FOOTBALL WELL IN THE FIRST HALF? | While perusing the open game day threads, it seemed that people were upset at how the offense was chugging along, with the thought that there was too much running. Really? At some point in the 2nd quarter, Taylor Potts completed 2 passes in 6 attempts for 2 yards. You really want to keep throwing the ball? The running game was actually netting positive yards so I guess I don't get the argument, and maybe someone needs to set me straight. After last week, everyone commented that the OSU offense was great and they loved seeing OSU run the ball when the defense dictated that. In the open game day threads, people get upset that there's too much running the ball, despite the fact that none of us were actually watching the game, and what if, stay with me here, the Colorado defense was giving the Texas Tech offense the run rather than the pass? Don't you want to run the ball? Don't you want to take what the defense gives you? Maybe I'm confused, but what I've been writing since the 3rd or 4th game of the season, is that it's not about the type of play an offense is running, it's whether that offense is efficient. There's no doubt that the offense was abysmal in the first half. Abysmal. There was one drive, an 11 play, 79 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. Other than that drive, the Texas Tech offense netted 26 yards of total offense. Inconsistency.
But in the second half, things opened up a bit and there may not have been a more important drive than the 2nd drive in the 2nd half where Texas Tech scored it's second touchdown and started at Texas Tech's own 7 yard line. Texas Tech had to go 93 yards. How did it happen?
Potts to Leong - 7 yards
Batch rush - 4 yards
Potts to Batch - incomplete
Batch rush - 11 yards
Potts to Torres - 45 yards
Penalty on CU - Jimmy Smith for unsportsmanlike conduct
Potts to Zouzalik - 1 yard
Potts to Torres - 15 yards, TD
That's 7 plays, 2 rushing plays that got you positive yards, and the offense getting the ball down the field and you could even consider the incomplete pass to Batch as part of the running game. And truthfully, what was the more efficient part of the offense? RB's Eric Stephens, Baron Batch and Ben McRoy had 30 carries for 171 yards, that's a 5.7 yard per carry average. QB Taylor Potts completed 24 for 38 passes for 286 yards for a 7.5 yards per attempt average. A 7.5 yard per attempt average passing isn't bad, but I'll take 5.7 yards rushing per attempt every day of the week. It's easy to complain about the running game, but it's making this offense better.
NIGHT AND DAY DEFENSE | Having not seen the game, I don't know whether or not to attribute the turn-around of the defense to the Texas Tech defense or the poor play of the Colorado offense. I'm sure it's a little bit of both, but in the first three quarters, Texas Tech gave up 325 yards to Colorado. In the fourth quarter, Colorado managed 34 yards on 6 drives (although the last drive was with only 0:19 remaining) and zero first downs. The announcers said that the Cody Hawkins' passes were fluttering in the wind in the 4th quarter, but as rough as the defense was in the first three quarters, when it mattered, that defense came through. From my count, this defense only played 19 players and the radio broadcast said that the defense only brought 22 overall players. I should also mention that in addition to NG Bobbie Agoucha and DE Donald Langley getting the starts, OLB Julius Howard was replaced in the starting lineup by Tyrone Sonier and Sam Fehoko got the nod as well.
RECEIVER POSITION CHANGE | During the game, it was mentioned that Alexander Torres and Detron Lewis switched positions. Torres, formerly an outside receiver, and Lewis, formerly an inside receiver, made the switch and there was some success. I'm not about to declare this as a success, but there was some success with this move as Torres had 6 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown while Lewis had 6 catches for 84 yards. It should also be mentioned that Darrin Moore replaced Lyle Leong at the other wide receiver spot. Interesting.
A DISCUSSION | Texas Tech announcer John Harris said that head coach Tommy Tuberville, offensive coordinator Neal Brown and QB Potts had a discussion after Potts throws his interception on a pass intended for WR Detron Lewis. In describing the play, it was trips left with Lewis split wide to the right. There was one-on-one coverage for Lewis and Potts threw a fade route. You need to watch the KAMC video linked above for a view of the pass. It was awful. I don't know if it was the wind, but Potts threw that fade with too much room inside of the endzone rather than in the corner of the endzone where the only results would be a touchdown or an incompletion. Harris said that Tuberville and Brown had a discussion, and Potts was pulled in late. Harris intimated that Tuberville thought that the play-call was a bad call, but that doesn't sound like a bad play-call, Lewis with one-on-one coverage, but it was the execution of that pass that was abysmal. That interception came on a 3rd and 5 at the Colorado 12 yard line. That drive was actually building up to be a pretty impressive drive and maybe what Tuberville wanted was a first down rather than going for it all on just one play. I don't fault Tuberville for that thought (if that was the case), which is get the first down and not turn the ball over in the redzone. Had Potts not thrown the interception, Texas Tech could have, at the very least, gone up 3 with a field goal.
DEFENSE HARD TO GUAGE | When you can't watch a game, at the very least with the offense, we can look at stats and make some assumptions about who played well and who didn't. With the defense, it's not that easy because tackles do not always equal good plays, but it is easy to see who made plays. DT Pearlie Graves had 3 TFL and 2 sacks in his first collegiate game. Yes please. S Cody Davis had 2 TFL and 10 tackles. CB Jarvis Phillips had 6 tackles and 2 pass break-ups. OLB Julius Howard ha 3 tackles and 1 TFL and DT Colby Whitlock had 1 TFL and 3 tackles. And that much beleagured and injured defensive line limited Colorado to 28 rushing yards for the game. Sure, Colorado pretty much gave up on the run in the second half, but RB Rodney Stewart had 20 rushes for a gain of 46 yards but a net of 34 yards. That's a 1.7 YPC average.
POST GAME PRESS CONFERENCE NON TRANSCRIPT |
Tommy Tuberville: It's fun to win a game. It's hard especially on the road. Make mistakes, but was able to make enough plays to get a win. Defense gave up yards in the first half, but shut them down in the second half. Field goal kicker was great and special teams was good. Scratched and clawed and found a way to win the game. After Tyler Hansen went out, we went press coverage on their receivers, but 7 or 8 in the box and just took it away. New defense put in this week. Tried to create a 5 man rush and play coverage instead of zone. Makes them go to a different offense. Needed to play a good game. Needed to play begger. They were playing press man coverage on the outside, were givin gus the run, and once the run got going, then the pass offense opened up. Matt Williams kicked well, especially with the wind. Were going to defer anyway. Getting the ball in the 4th quarter and having the wind at your back, and Zouzalik catching the ball on the 20-25 was one of the bigger plays because he didn't let the punt roll. Didn't get turnovers, but made play defensively. Offense looked better with the sideline routes, and the pass protection improved. CO played some zone with 4 man rush. Needed a win like this to get some confidence.
OFFENSIVE MVP | WR ALEXANDER TORRES | Just a huge game from Texas Tech's new inside receiver. Made a ton of plays and that's what this team needs."It was a fight the whole time. They came out, and we came out, and it was a dog fight and it came down to the last minute. It’s real big for us and it’s a really great feeling right now, but we know we’ve got to forget about it tomorrow and start getting ready for next week. We needed this win. We needed to come out and show that we’re going to fight the rest of the season, and we’re never going to give up."
DEFENSIVE MVP | DT PEARLIE GRAVES | Where has Graves been hiding. I'd love to know how he looked, but 3 TFL in his first action, he was pretty good.
"We didn’t really do anything different. We just came out with a lot of swag. We just tried to go out there and do what we do best. That’s to go out there and stop runs and do what we can."
SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | K MATT WILLIAMS | Probably my MVP of the game. Texas Tech doesn't get that win without Williams' leg.
"I was just trying to stay relaxed. I tried to focus on other things than kicking the ball, but I just took a deep breath and kicked the ball. I know God gave me the talent to kick the ball through the uprights, and that’s why he put me here. I just have to do my job."
GAME NOTES | These are my notes from the game, without editing.
#1
CO: Pretty big gains in the first drive. Forced a 3rd down. Damn.
TT: Potts in SG; RB behind and RB to his right. New formation and got 6. Swindall gets a 10 yard gain. Sticks as WR and in wildcat with Stephens as QB. Jailbreak dropped by Detron Lewis. 3rd/8 was incomplete with Darrin Moore. Punt, LaCour had to make the tackle. 58 yard punt, 44 yard return.
#2
CO: Starting at the TTU 42. Huge punt return for Colorado for 45 yards that ended up on the TT 40 yard line. Colorado only had to go 40 yards for the touchdown. Defense has 3rd/1. CO has 2/TE and gets 1st down. CO loses yardage on reverse and receiver slips. The QB draw gets a few back. Dartwan Bush has redshirt lifted and is playing. Also in is Pearlie Graves. The receiver that doesn't really do a whole lot offensively got open. Also mentioned that Pearlie Graves is playing at DT and then makes a stop in the CO backfield. Nice to hear that TT defenders were dragged around by Will Jefferson. QB sneak by CO gets 1 yard TD.
TT: Ben McRoy gets the handoff (maybe motion) and gets a 1st down. Alex Torres drops the pass, said it was uncharacteristic of Torres. Detron Lewis is now at the outside spot and Torres is inside receiver. Batch makes a catch and Corn Douglas holds to bring it back. Poor play after the penalty, 3rd and long (actually needs 24) and now they punt again. Not much of return, only 2 yards. Yea!
#3
CO: False start, so some good news there. I'll take anything at this point. Hansen to Stewart and get a fairly easy first down. Pistol formation, but only gets 2. Lawrence Rumph and LaRon Moore get in the game. Moore was on CO's best receiver, McKnight.
TT: Torres misses another pass, thrown out of reach, but he did have his hands on it. Batch gets 2 and now another 3rd down. Potts is sacked. You could almost see this happen on the radio. I'm thinking deer in headlights since the broadcasters called it as it was happening. Corona punts, only his 3rd of the day. CO will have to go 70 yards with a 56 yard punt.
#4
CO: Bront Bird gets Jefferson with only 3 yard gain. Force a 3rd down and 6. Moore doesn't let as well as Sonier, Jefferson get up field. Jefferson converts on a 3rd down for 15 yards. Dewhurts hits him and doesn't wrap up. Another 3rd down, Patterson catches the ball, but takes for a 7 yard loss. Let's see if TT can not gift another 3rd down. Pearlie Graves gets the sack at the 36 yard line. Right now, Graves has 2 TFL, including a sack. CO punts and Tre' Porter has a block in the back.
TT: Level mentioned that Chris Olson was switching from TE to RG and taking out Deveric Gallington. With Potts 1-5 for 4 yards, it would seem smart to maybe do the same thing with Steven Sheffield. Leong catches the ball and loses yards. Potts should be 2-6 for 2 yards at this point. Offisides by CO. Positive yards! Eric Stephens with a gain. TT went 5 wide on 3rd down and all were looking for the sideline for the call and apparently everyone was taking a smoke break. Had to call a timeout. Torres is tackled at the 45 and gets 17 yards. Stephens for 7, Keown and Edwards open it up. Stephens gets another long gain (25), while Batch gets a carry. 2nd/9 with a pass to Leong, will be interference on the defense, Jimmy Smith. Credit goes to Leong for this hopeful touchdown. Ball on the 2 yard line. CO forces a 3rd/1 and Aaron Crawford gets a touchdown. The right side of the line opened up the hole. What? Jacoby Franks has a broken bone in foot.
#5
CO: Hansen is decked by Julius Howard. Shoulder pad into the headgear. Hasen is nailed by Howard and is on his back. Hawkins is in the game. Throws incomplete. Hawkins gets a play for a 1st down, 11 yards. Swing pass. Fehoko makes a good play, forces a 3rd and 8. Tony Clemons makes a catch in front of Jarvis Philips, maybe a bit short of the 1st down. Just an inch short. CO is going to go for it. Langley, Graves, Whitlock and Graves. Hawkins under center and short of the 1st down and but spins to just get it. Loss of 8 as the defense strings out the run, a sweep. Seriously, how do you get a loss of 8 on a sweep? Time out. McKnight is apparently wide open and now inside the 25. Was in between Howard and Cody Davis. Catch was in front of D.J. Johnson. Yuck. 3rd/1 and Stewart gets 1st down. Result is a FG.
2ND HALF
#1
TT: Torres makes the catch. An actual first down on a drive. McRoy gets the ball again. Said that the ball was high by Potts and now another 3rd down. Another incompletion to Franks, sounds like Potts again as Franks had to dive. Said that Leong was wide open.
CO: Hawkins throws incomplete, coverage by Phillips. Hawkins to Clemons, again with Phillips for 23 yards. Huge chunk of yards. McKnight gets the 1st down with Johnson on coverage. Why is Brian Duncan making a play down the field and the running back is running straight up the field? Sack by Whitlock and Bront Bird. Loss of 7. Now 2nd and 17. Someone makes a play for 14 and now 3rd/3. Clemons makes catch for 25 yards and said that Johnson is looking at Porter and asking why Porter isn't making tackles. Now at the 3 yard line. Paul Richardson gets the TD.
#2
TT: Dumb penalty, on special teams, the ball is at the 7 yard line. This is going to go well. Positive yards on a 1st down pass to Lewis and Batch with a 1st down run. Potts overthrows Batch on the very next play. Batch does get a bit back, 11 yards. Torres makes a big catch, goes for 45 yards. Apparently Jimmy Smith has been mouthy all game long. Coverage is great. Wow, a Torres touchdown. Threw flat-footed and threw a bullet 15 yards for a touchdown.
CO: Hawkins is throwing the ball all over the place. Just threw for 15 yards, Dewhurst on the tackle. This says volumes about the pass defense. Cody frickin' Hawkins is a good quarterback against this defense. Whitlock makes another play behind the line, forcing a 3rd/15. Moore holds on the previous 1st down play, but then he makes a pretty good play on 3rd down. Perhaps TT will get a touchdown on offense.
#3
TT: 1st pass is dropped by Baron Batch. All CO secondary is playing press coverage. Another incompletion on 3rd down. 3 and out. Awesome. Franks' broken foot, will require either him being out for the year or having to work through it.
CO: Hawkins continues to throw the ball like he's Joe Montana. Stewart gets the ball on 3rd down and does eventually get it. Cody Davis tries to hit Stewart up high and misses. This defense is a mess. Johnson allows another touchdown, by Paul Richardson. A freaking 60 yard touchdown.
#4
TT: Stephens gets no gain on rush. Swindall catches a pass, but now he's slow to get up after 4 yard catch. Leong gets the catch, but gets the 1st down. Stephens gets a hand-off, for 30 yards. Behind Waddle and Edwards. After a long run, it's 3rd/8 and delay hand-off and doesn't get the 1st down, still 2 to go. 4th/2 Lewis gets enough for 1st down. Potts to Moore and the ball is over-thrown. Batch with another delayed hand-off for no gain. 3rd/10 and Potts is sacked at the 24. Pocket collapsed and no receivers are open. End of the quarter. 40 yard FG by Matt Williams..
CO: Hawkins throws incomplete, but it was due to Johnson just running Clemmons off the field. Whatever works. Stewart gets the ball for 4. 3rd/6 and incomplete. A 3 and out? What? What are the words I am typing? Punt, but Blake Kelley gets blocked into the football and now it's CO football. Really? It's come to this. I'm sure that people will blame Tuberville for this, but that seems extreme. The long punt return? Yes. A player being pushed into the ball? No. CO now has the ball at the 35. Clemons and Phillips battle again, thankfully falls incomplete. Clemmons with Philips on him for 5. 3rd/5 and Paul Richardson gets the ball for an easy 1st down. Johnson with the coverage. Luckily the result was a missed FG.
#5
TT: Lewis gets a grab, something different, but they don't describe it well here. Throw to the outside and then let the other two block. Leong gets another grab and then Batch gets enough for a 1st down. Austin Zouzalik gets another 1st down and the offense starts to click, 16 yards. Lewis gets 32 yards on a pass on Jimmy Brown. Ball on the 6 yard line. Leong with a fade pass for a touchdown. This never happens.
CO: Hawkins to McKnight for no gain. Hawkins to McKnight again for 4 and Johnson gets the tackle. Hawkins throws incomplete. No screw-ups on special teams.
#6
TT: Said that Jacoby Franks is out for the game, Harris thought that this means that Franks is probably out for the year. RB Harrison Jeffers with the carry, holding on Edwards. Yuck. Mis-direction and almost gets back to the 20, still a long ways to go. Lewis gets a long catch and now it's 3rd/2. Lewis gets the 1st down. Thank you. Zouzalik drops the pass, right in his hands. Seems like this is the one time that it wasn't Potts' fault. Moore makes a short catch, for 1, and now 3rd/9. Torres makes a huge catch, was hit as he makes the throw, and picks up 42. Potts bobbled snap and incomplete. Potts completes pass now 3rd/5. Trips left, Lewis on the right. Jalil Brown makes the interception on Lewis. Potts wanted 1-on-1 coverage. Tuberville and Neal Brown are having words with Potts. Tuberville went after Brown and then Brown and Tuberville and Potts get in a 3-way? I can only hope.
CO: Hawkins hands off to Stewart, only gets 1. Dewhurst makes a play, forces 3rd/6. Hawkins to Clemons, but bobbled the ball. 3 and out.
#7
TT: 4:26 with the ball at the TT 47 yard line. Moore to the left, trips right. Potts to Lewis for a 1st down, 15 yards. Swindall and Torres with the blocks. Batch with the ball, and another 1st down, 14 yards. John Harris is looking at the coaches' pants. Milking the clock a bit. Stephens gets to the 21 for 4 yards. Stephens gets the ball again, goes down to the 16. Now 3rd/1. Pistol look, Stephens behind Potts and Batch to Potts' right. No gain and now a 4th down. Matt Williams with a 37 FG try. Williams makes it. First lead of the game. Dear sweet clean football gods, please make this stick. Carona kicks it into the endzone for a touchback.
CO: Hawkins throws an awful pass. Patterson catches the ball, with Moore on coverage. Pick up of 2, maybe 3rd/8. Hawkins misses Clemons. Only 1:51 left in the game. Go for it on 4th/8. Incomplete. Ball goes over to 4th down. Johnson on McKnight. Maybe his best play of the day.
#8
TT: Tuberville tells Brown, the ball stays on the ground. He's coaching like a guy desperate for a win. And will have to call a timeout. Now 1:44. Potts takes a knee. CO calls a TO. Won't be able to run clock down to zero. Now 4th down and 0:50 left. Colorado will have a play or two. Batch runs the ball. Now 16 seconds left and at their own 30. Turnover on downs.
CO: Hawkins to Clemson out of bounds. Hawkins to Richardson and incomplete. Only 3 seconds left. The pitch routine and TT recovers.

Was hoping...
You would have said something about Tubbs decision at the end of the game- Victory formation :)
Morning from Boulder also
Clock management at the end made us nervous, but we are 4-3 and two games away from bowl eligible.
"I spent 18 months, off and on, with the script writer. I might as well have not spent one second with him." Don Haskins.
Made us nervous?? More like gave us all strokes.
The end of the game management has been abysmal now on several occasions. That’s something that needs to be fixed, especially if we’re trying to win games by 2 or 3 points.
"They challenged us. They said, 'Here, try to run past us, try to run inside us.' And they were better at preventing that than we were throwing and catching it." --Mike Leach
Yeah.
I should have expounded on this:
Tuberville tells Brown, the ball stays on the ground. He’s coaching like a guy desperate for a win. And will have to call a timeout. Now 1:44. Potts takes a knee. CO calls a TO. Won’t be able to run clock down to zero. Now 4th down and 0:50 left. Colorado will have a play or two. Batch runs the ball.
It was ugly, and inserted in there should be, “TT had to call a TO because they couldn’t get their ‘S’ together.”

I didn’t have a problem with running the ball. Except on 3rd and 24. But I felt like we were running it because the passing game was executing poorly more than that being what the defense dictated. Running did open up big passing plays later on. I don’t like feeling like the team is working around a disability by focusing on something else.
At one point in the second half I think only 4 receivers had touched the ball. Only 6 receivers had catches at the end of the game. 28 yards passing in the first half. The ball’s not being spread around very well.
Be a team. Be the most excited to play. Be the best at doing your @#&$ing job.
The ball...
…is not spread around b/c Potts is terrible. A couple of times on the radio the announcers said if Potts would have look away from where he was going he had guys wide open. Potts cannot go through reads and progressions. He is not a good QB. Sticks can and is, but our stupid coaches will never put him in b/c it would make them look bad. These coaches leave more than something to be desired.
And yes, running the ball on passing downs is so stupid and rarely works with our offensive line. Especially on 3rd and 24.
Seth, I think your comments about wanting to pass more are spot on for the most part. I think the sentiment from people saying to pass more is that under Leach, playing CO, we could at least move the ball passing between the 20’s. If Tech fans knew anything it was that we could get yards and get in a position to score in any game. Leach didn’t have the running game we all wanted inside the 20’s. I think most people would be happy with the improvements to the running game (how could you not be), but our passing game has fallen apart. Of course, I think that is a direct reflection of playing our worst QB on the 5 deep as a starter, and Neil Brown sucking at play calling but whatever. Also, against Baylor, ISU, and CO, when we started scoring, it always had to do with big passing plays and throwing the ball. Sure a few runs are mixed in, but passing got us down the field. If the pass game isn’t working, we will not win. That is why people want to pass. As you say though, it has to be efficient. And that is a Brown/Potts problem.

I'm with this guy.....
Even when Ports throws a TD it’s the wrong read! And even though Sticks throws a lot of pick-sixes, the read is always right, it’s the receiver who us out of position. Bench Chuck Norris and fire Charlie Brown…..and every coach who was stupid enough to start Potts!! Err….just fire the last coach to start Ports!!!
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
sarcasm font
I’m assuming you are being sarcastic, but most of what you said is actually true. If Sticks throws a pick 6 and 5 TD’s that is 50 times better than the BS we are dealing with in Potts. Also, you have to keep in mind that Potts has been given the opportunity to work with the 1st team and have the most reps pretty much all last year and this year. Sticks came in last year on limited reps and still out performed Potts (and the rest of the country). I feel like I’m talking to a mud fence here but Sticks is just better. Potts is not good. At least put in Scotty Young, Doege, or Karam. Anyone.
It’s not a situation of anointing Sticks a hero before he has done anything. It’s a situation of knowing Sticks had the highest QB rating of QB’s with 3 games (or whatever the criteria was) in the nation last year. Then having Potts play horrible all year, and refusing to play Sticks. Its a joke. Brown and Tubs are a joke. Special teams are a joke. The defense is a joke. The kids are playing hard, but the coaching is a failure. Good thing this team was used to winning or we might have given up against Baylor and CO. How would we look then…
I think when it comes to anyone who would dare talk down about this team...
It’s a safe bet that you’ll see TTUMAR use a sarcasm font.

That's nor fair, I agree with you guts and still no love
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Agreed
there has been only one game (baylor, but only in the first half) where you could see Potts go thru his reads. As much as Brown and Tubs have said Potts’ mechanics are better this year, he is still not a consistently good QB. With this offense there is always someone open, thats been proven over the last 10 years, he just needs to settle down, make the right reads, and throw the ball.
The conversation between Tuberville, Brown and Potts
I would really be interested in knowing the contents of the conversation that happened between cTT, Brown and then late Potts. I heard from someone who was at the game that this happened just after Potts threw a bad interception in the end zone. Apparently, Potts did not like the conversation, he muttered something and threw a hissy feat, while on the bench. Brown came by and told him again something pointing a finger (not the middle one though). Unfortunately, there was only a fleeting reference to this event on the media reports. So, if others have more information on this can you please share it with us on this board.
Brown & Potts
probably playing the blame game since they’re both pathetic performers.

One problem we have had the last few games is that there is only about 4 reliable wr out there. The drops are still killing us. I know Potts wasn’t on target either but some of those balls were just flat out drops too.

It should also be mentioned that Darrin Moore replaced Lyle Leong at the other wide receiver spot. Interesting.
Trying to get Potts to spread the ball around instead of zeroing in on one guy?
Who is Darren Moore....
and where the Hell us Eric Ward?
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
I read something recently that Ward wasn’t working hard in practice. I guess we could go a couple of ways on this, but when I watched Ward as a true freshman, he struggled to figure things out. He was much better this spring, but if he’s not putting in the work, then . . . Seems that this was a problem with Franks last year too.

is in class with me. He came in one day, sat down next to me and asked Okafor, “If I have a concussion do I still get to travel?” Yea. . I almost cried.
Try Potts at inside receiver & send him across the middle most of one game
If he survives he might be a little less skittish behind center. Then the coaches won’t need to run a wishbone offense to compensate for a questionable passing game.
It just hit me that the name Air Raid comes from bombers flying overhead in WWII and NASCAR describes vehicles tethered to the ground except for the rare times one goes airborne in a spectacular mishap.
NASCAR isn’t supposed to be a passing offense. How could I have missed it? It is so obvious.
Ah ha... you're right... brilliant... bummer...

RE: the comment by John Harris about the play call on the fade attempt that was intercepted
The most successful passing play Tech has had this year as far as scoring has been that fade route to the corner of the end zone. I’d venture to guess that half the passing touchdowns this year have been fade passes to Leong. So I can’t imagine Tubs being surprised or mad about the play call. Unless he told them during the week to stop using it so often.
They didn’t expound on the why, but there was a discussion. If you watch the KAMC video, you can see the pass and it was awful. Harris was making an educated guess?

Yea heard...
The Colorado fans are/were the worst fans in the BIG 12, ummmm with us behind them… Would have liked to go to that game just to see what all the commotion is all about.
Maybe
he was mad b/c Potts was the one throwing it and he sucks. Under throwing a fade to the corner of the endzone in a tie ball game is about as bad as a QB can be. Literally terrible and could have cost us the game. Good thing we are keeping our best QB well rested on the bench.
Been wondering
when that often used fade would be intercepted. Watched in Cotton Bowl when it was used to come down around the 25. That has to be perfect and the coverage was good. Leong has often caught it due to his athletic ability despite coverage. CO had to know it was coming. You can’t make a living with it.
I keep wondering about Potts inconsistency. He may have a better arm but certainly is no Harrell. Keep wondering whether he would rather be bird hunting than in the film room. Harrell was smart and had a work ethic that allowed him to work the progressions. Is that missing in Potts?
Going forward
It’s nice to come away with the win and especially one on the road. This offense still has me thinking that it’s mismanaged. Next week against A&M will pose some really tough challenges and I’m hoping for a much better performance. Defensively, I think Willis is working as hard as he can with what he has to work with. A poor first half against A&M will leave little chance for a come back. For now I’m happy with this win but it doesn’t make me feel very comfortable about what’s next.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach

Pretty sure
that over the last 9 years, defenses “gave” tech the run and focussed on the passing game, just like they have this year. The raiders we all knew and loved wanted the ball first, would line up to pass, the defense knew what was coming, and they still couldn’t stop it. I’m not opposed to the running game, I suppose I am just frustrated to see that this team can’t execute a slant, bubble screen, (or any kind of pass) until our running game “gets going” and forces the other team to change. (thank goodness the former coaching staff recruited great talent at the running back position). So what happens when the Oklahoma’s and Missouri’s can dominate our running game with the front 4 and our passing game still can’t complete a simple pass. It’s gonna be ugly.
I'll take a shot at your last question..
in that case, the game will look like Norman 2008.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Running vs passing... and complaining about it...
The thing I’m struggling with is this:
Tubs philosophy = we’ve got to run in order to set up the pass…
So it seems that we very consciously try to establish the run during the first half of the game… Not that the play mix is that significantly different… it’s a little more toward the run… 60/40 or so… but it seems there are more called runs between the tackles on 1st and 2nd down… to establish the run… (and to set up the pass…)
I’d be interested to know, out of our old 70/30 mix, how many of those runs were on 2nd, 3rd (or 4th) and short… or a draw on a longer distance…
So early in the game while we’re trying to “establish” the run… if we’re not too good at it… the offense goes nowhere.. especially if you mix in a bad pass, drop or penalty…
And, although we’re getting better, we’re not too good at it… Or at least, you would have to admit it is not our strength… (although, at this point I don’t even know what our strength may be… it used to be our passing game…)
It seems the times our offense has moved the best this year were when we either had very little time left in a half or were trying to come back from a deficit… we had no choice but to “open it up” more… maybe the mindset then is more “pass” oriented? Maybe we’re not as concerned then about mixing in the run off tackle? Honestly, I don’t know… but it feels a little bit like that to me…
So, in essence, my problem is I don’t believe in the basic philosophy = you have to be able run to set up the pass…
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen us pass successfully for several years without needing the run to set it up… and I would say, statistically, we were able to run just as effectively last year (and some other previous years) as we are this year… perhaps the pass was setting up the run?
So I think this is where some of the complaining is coming from… it’s not so much the pass/run mix… but the philosophy behind the offense… and I think the philosophy is different in a very significant way… and, as someone said, “transition is hard”…

I’ve got to go here in a few minutes, but if you look at the numbers, and this is true especially last week, but it was the inefficient passing offense that forced so many 3 and outs. It was heavy on the pass and perhaps the thought is that with inconsistent QB play (yes, I want Sheffield in there rather than Potts) that having a somewhat decent running game is good. It was also good to see the line blow up the CU d-line on Aaron Crawford’s TD. That’s a byproduct of having a good running game.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
I went back to my PGT from last week and the offense passed on 14 of the first 18 plays. That’s not running to establish the pass, that’s just offensive inefficiency from Potts, the receivers, the line, and getting into a hole that TTU couldn’t climb out of.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
What are the down and distance for those 4 running plays?
I don’t know the details and am just commenting on what I think I’ve seen… (and my perception/interpretation of it…)
Again, it’s not really the pass/run ratio… but when we are running and what we are trying to do with the run…
Ex: We could run on 1st and 10 for 4 drives.. gain nothing… pass on long down and distance when the defense is keyed in on it… have a few drops, bad throws, or penalties… go 3 and out… and have a 60/40 pass to run ratio…
I’m not saying this is exactly what’s happening… but my perception is that we are more focused on “establishing” the run…
Maybe it just seems that way to me because Tubs keeps telling everyone that we’ve got to be able to run…
My real point is that there is a significant change in the underlying offensive philosophy… (it may be for the better once Tubs get’s it all lined out the way he wants…)
But this is what everyone is seeing and feeling uncomfortable about… even though the pass/run ratio is not that different…
(We’re seeing are the inefficiencies experienced while trying to make a significant change…)

Are you asking if the team is practicing the run a huge amount of time for no reason
and then focusing on the pass in the game, and are thus unprepared? I don’t think anyone here can answer that without having been at practice, but you it seems unlikely, and there has been no statement or evidence to support that theory.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Not practicing the run for no reason... but because it's the core philosophy that you've got to be able to do it...
Of course I don’t know…
But it seems logical to me that Philosophy —> Strategy —> Focus & Preparation —> Execution
And our passing execution is way off this year… (yes, there are personnel factors, but we’ve had different people succeed before…)
Our power running game is getting better gradually… (we used to not have one at all…)
I’m assuming this is taking some time and preparation…
Do we practice longer now to do both effectively? Or is there less focus/prepapration on some details in the passing game?

I think they should still be able to execute a simple in route even if they aren’t practicing the play as often as before. It’s a fairly weak excuse to me. If our players can’t practice BOTH the run and pass without one of them being terrible every week in a game, then you have your answer…our players can’t handle being more than one-dimensional.
Two big differences on offense, from previous seasons, seem to be dropped passes and YAC. Receivers appear to be dropping more passes than usual and not getting as many yards after catch. Probably the two biggest reasons why are passing game blows this year.

YAC
Is because half the time Potts throws behind the receiver or to high or whatever. Potts kills YAC.

Please tell me you're joking.
Leading the receiver just a little bit comes in quite handy in our offense. While there are many plays that involve Potts putting it in one spot, there are an equal amount of plays that require him to put it in front of the receiver.

Discussions of the coach being fired after this game, coaches son the loosing QB, and mom standing by listening in as the press grills her son. Ugly and getting worse. Some things that stood out, and some that really tweaked a nerve…
A coach on the brink finally went over it with Colorado’s 27-24 come-from-ahead loss to Texas Tech, the second-worst defensive team in the Big 12.
Against a defense ranked 102nd nationally, Colorado scored just seven more points against Tech than New Mexico did.
With Hansen out, Texas Tech played man-to-man coverage on the receivers and stacked eight or nine men near the line of scrimmage. The Buffs’ own no-huddle offense seemed to baffle their young receivers, who continued to turn the wrong way.
“They got in our huddle and told us to screw ourselves,” Cody Hawkins said when asked about the adjustments Texas Tech’s defense made in the fourth quarter. The point he was trying to make is the Buffs started beating themselves. There was Aric Goodman’s crucial missed field goal, a 29-yard punt, and a miscommunication between Hawkins and Richardson on a key third down."
The kicking game cost the Colorado football team once again Saturday at Folsom Field in another loss that might get coach Dan Hawkins kicked to the curb.

This is a pretty weak offense we’re seeing now and I doubt it changes all that much in week of prep. Brown has no clue how to manage this offense so don’t lose any sleep thinking we’re going to have some element of surprise to work with. A&M is making changes for the best and we simply are not.

Run vs Pass
Over the last ten years, the run was called by the quarterback, as has been mentioned before, because Leach only sent in passing plays. Whatever the defensive setup, the quarterback had the OK to change into another passing play or a run. Now, however, when the run is called, it is by the OC and the QB only is allowed two other options if he decides. What those options are we can only speculate, but it is obvious to me that the run is followed through with, even when the defense is set up to stop it from gaining anything. Also, on passing plays, the receivers are given specific route to run on each play call, with no chance, except when the protection for the QB breaks down, of “adlibbing” as has been allowed in the past. All of this, it seems has taken away the sponanuity of the offense, the ability to make something out of nothing. I don’t mind more running, but smewhere, somehow, the coaches need to realize that the freeness of the offense from years past is exactly what allowd it to excell unde any circumstances. While the running game has seemingly improved, it may be that it is being utililized a bit out of scew to where it needs to be run. All the changes are much more than any of us anticipated after we were told that we would not see a difference. Well, we can see a difference. That difference is that it takes the offense, and defense, way too long to get in “sync” with what the coaches want, putting them all behind in the game and needing the make adjustments to start taking advantage of what the defense is really giving. We are having to make up for poor game planning from the start. If the coaches want this team to excell from the start, they simply need to improve on their preparations by knowing better what any particular defense will throw at Tech at the start of a game, then calling for the correct alignments based on that improved preparation. The run can work, but pushing it at the wrong times may be what is getting Tech in trouble from the start. “Go with what brung ya”. That would be the pass. Then bring in the run to compliment the pass.It would also help, I suppose, if the QB would actually make more than one or two reads on any given play. But that would be a personnel issue, which I don’t think this coaching crew has a clue what they have and how to best utilize that talent in a way that would give Tech a much better opportunity to win.

At the beginning of the season, Craig James voted for Tech. It surprised me that he’s a voter due to the obvious conflict of interest with his son being a player.

Something to think about...
Tech last played Colorado at Boulder in 2006. The Buffs were 0-6 when the Red Raiders went to Folsom Field. Colorado stomped down on us big time, winning 20 to 6. Here are statistics from that game.
Tech:
15 rushes for 31 yards, 0 TDs
Harrell was 29 for 45 for 245 yards, 1 TD, and 3 Ints
Colorado:
46 rushes for 228 yards, 1 TD
12 of 19 passing for 152 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 Ints
As you can see, not the greatest Red Raider performance. Granted that was Harrell’s first season as a starter, but for a Leach-run offense it was pretty lame. I’m glad that our running backs are getting more work and garnering more respect than they had in previous years, as I’ve thought Tech has pretty talented RBs for a pass-first team. And at least we know when Potts is having a slow game, they seem to be stepping up and producing positive offensive plays. However, I agree with those who believe that switching to a run-first offense deteriorates our identity as Red Raiders. I enjoy watching us rack up immense numbers of yards through the air, seeing 4 or more passing TDs, and all the excitement that goes along with the Air Raid. I definitely think that creating an effective running game with backs like Batch and Stephens, coupled with the Air Raid of old, would make us an offensive juggernaut.
I still think we can have a productive second half of the season if we play on offense like we did against Baylor. Everyone’s saying ‘yeah, it’s just Baylor,’ but look at them this year. And we did a decent job of containing RGIII comparative to most other teams. Basically all I’m saying is don’t give up hope, we are Texas Tech, we have the ability beat anybody on any given day (or at least I hope we still have that ability). It’s tough to continue to support a team that seems to be ‘failing,’ but it’s not like we ever were undefeated under Leach like some people on here seem to think. We had our down games under him too, i.e. Colorado or even Mizzou that same season when Harrell threw back-to-back pick 6s and was booed off the field.
And hey, if anything, Tech and Texas have the same record right now.
Wreck ’em!
+1
Agree on all points.
If you’re a true fan, it’s not hard to support your team when they’re down. It makes the strong seasons that much more satisfying.
Being disappointed? That comes with the territory. Lots of folks just hurt about the Leach dismissal (rightly so) and feel a struggling team gives vindication. Talking alot of crap about the new coaching staff and the current players doesn’t show support for Leach. Doesn’t show alot of class either.
This is bull.
Leach and his staff were better. Why shouldn’t I talk crap about the current staff when we had a better thing going and the Belltower Boys F’d us???
And don’t give me the class BS.

better thing last year? Yep.
Yep. We had a better thing last year and for several prior years at Tech than we do this year. I’ll agree with that.
Makes it hard to remember those two 7 win seasons Leach started his Tech career with. And thank god we were playing Stephen F Austin back then.
Leach’s 2009 staff had been together for a while. The staff we have now are still getting on the same page with each other. The key players in this staff weren’t one coaching unit before they arrived, either. Look at Florida. Not near as many changes in staff as Tech but changes in key positions going into this year. Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator (changes last 2 yrs)+ Head coach on the fence about returning for this year. Makes for a disjointed effort.
I know most don’t see it like me but I find it more rewarding to take a position of support than of criticism. Anyone can point out where hardworking coaches and young men come up short. If you like, and you probably do, you can do that every game, for every team, win or lose, high school, college or NFL.

I know the team is still learning what the new coaches want, and the new coaches are learning, more or less, on the fly what plays to call and how to win in the Big-XII. Through all of this, the bottom line is to win, whether it is pretty or ugly, just win. Three times they have failed. Four times they have succeeded. I am hoping for at least three more wins. This is a down year for a lot of team, but if Tech can get to that 7-win level, the year won’t seem quite so bad. As much as I had anticipated a 10-11 win season, I was obviously not seeing and reading all the signs correctly. Also, with as many injuries, plus a huge probation issued, as we have had, there is just no way continuity or spontaneity (there, got it right) can be obtained without some difficulties. So, just win and get to a nice bowl game and win it also.

1 ΒΆ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

I was definitely not expecting 10 wins...
I am upbeat about where I think this team can go…some speedbumps will occur, but I will be cheering for the scarlet and the black (and sometimes all white)

Hopefully we can win at least 1 of the next 3!
If we go 7-5 with a bowl win this will be an ok season. I would trade 1 of the last 2 games for a win at Norman.

Went to Boulder also.
My wife had to go get coffee to stay awake the 1st half lol. 1st half was pretty slow for both teams.
My assessment is our offense is sporadic & spastic. Some drives we look awesome then the next we look terrible. I would say that the receiver drops are about 60% Potts making our receivers drop the ball,( yes they could catch some or those but they would have to become contortionist) and 40% receivers just dropping the ball.
I think we can beat A&M and I am hoping for an upset of Missouri Or OU.
Oh I didn,t see it but a Tech fan got a punch threw at him by a CU fan, but the Tech fan was really being obnoxious and probably had it coming. We saw the cops talking to the Tech fan and asked a bystander what happened and that was his story.
Good to get a win!

Tech gets a win in a very difficult place (historically) for us to win. Let’s celebrate the win and not continue to get down on the players.
Seth thinks TT has an upset in them
Maybe, …but it might have already been against Baylor.
I like the glass all the way full.
I refuse to call Baylor an upset, even if they're number one in the south.
So here’s to that tradition still being alive. OU?
Baylor was not an upset.
The game did not look like an upset when it was happening.
We played good defense and adequate offense…and I believe that TTU’s current team has the ability to outscore BU about 2 to 1….
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
