Defensive Matchups | Texas Tech Red Raiders Defense vs. Texas A&M Aggies Offense

TEXAS TECH | I mentioned this earlier in the week in that it appears that S Brett Dewhurst is now the starting ILB. I'm a little surprised by this move and am trying to figure out DC James Willis' motivation for supplanting Julius Howard with Dewhurst. I've never thought that there's a huge disparity between Dewhurst and Howard in terms of speed, but Dewhurst has always had a knack, at the safety position, to make the right plays, although he is limited physically. As Willis continues to tinker with things, I'm certainly not opposed to this move and think that Willis is willing to put himself out there and try just about anything. Of course, Dewhurst gives up about 20 pounds to Howard and it's a little nerve-wrecking to think about how this will play out against a very good TAMU rush offense.
The defensive line stays intact for the most part this week. DE Donald Langley, DT Colby Whitlock, NT Bobbie Agoucha and DE Brian Duncan are still your starters. I did see that NT Pearlie Graves has moved ahead of NT Myles Wade on the depth chart, I'm sure largely based on his darned good performance last week. I think it's also interesting that DE Sam Fehoko is no longer listed as any sort of linebacker backup, but is just listed as a defensive end backup.
And perhaps the move of Dewhurst at linebacker won't matter too much as ILB Tyrone Sonier is starting alongside ILB Bront Bird. Maybe the thought is that no matter what comes through the middle of the field, Willis wants big enough linebackers to be able to fill those gaps and stop the run. It's interesting that Daniel Cobb is backing up Sonier and Cobb has moved from backing up Howard to moving inside. If I had to guess, I'm thinking that this is still about getting as much speed on the field as possible.
If you haven't checked, the Texas Tech pass defense is the 2nd worst pass defense in the country. You don't have to believe me, you can look for yourself, but you'll need to scroll down a bit. In my opinion, the move of Tre' Porter backfired a bit last week against Colorado. Although I've only seeen highlights, Porter looked like he had a very rough go at it with his first start at safety. Porter will eventually be fine, but he needs to learn how to tackle and wrap-up. D.J. Johnson continues to get burned on a weekly basis and I think at this point that there really aren't any options. With CB Will Ford continuing to be out, we're all going to have to live with Johnson. Tuberville praised CB Jarvis Phillips for his play last week, which included 6 tackles and 2 pass break-ups.
More good-strong after the jump.
TEXAS A&M | Turnovers. Turnovers. Turnovers. That's it right there. The TAMU defense isn't bad (it's actually pretty good) and the offense isn't bad (16th in the nation in total offense), but it's the turnovers. The correlation between turnover margin and wins and losses isn't a novel idea on my part, but it's certainly true for the Aggies. In the 4 TAMU wins, the Aggies are even, 9 turnovers gained and 9 turnovers lost. In the 3 TAMU losses, the Aggies only have 5 turnovers gained and 9 turnovers lost. The Aggies worst turnover margin performance was a win, -4 against Florida International (a 27-20 win), but when the offense turns the ball over 4 and 5 times it puts your defense in a tough position. The Aggies have gotten better, especially over the past 2 games where the Aggies didn't have a turnover against Missouri or Kansas.
Everyone is talking about the quarterback decision, and like Tuberville, I think we'll see both Jerrod Johnson and Ryan Tannehill. I've always like Tannehill as an athlete and never understood why he didn't see the field more. Johnson has to do a better job of managing the game, and although I don't think that you can pin every loss on Johnson (there were 3 fumbles lost against Arkansas), Johnson's inconsistency has been a big problem. Perhaps Tannehill's presence simply means that Johnson needs to perform in order to keep his gig. Either guy has talented players to throw the ball to, and the best receiver on the team and perhaps the receiver with the best future in the NFL is Jeff Fuller (as it seems that OSU's Justin Blackmon has a problem drinking and driving). Fuller has 44 catches, 687 yards and 9 touchdowns, close to 100 yards a game. I had always thought that Uzoma Nwachukwu was the Aggie's 2nd best receiver and it was surprising for me to see that Ryan Swope was actually 2nd on the team with 42 catches, 414 yards and 2 touchdowns. Obviously, Fuller is the best and most explosive receiver on the team.
I've always liked both Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray and either one can beat a defense. Michael has been the better runner this year, averaging 84 yards a game and 4 touchdowns while Gray is averaging 44 yards a game and 3 touchdowns. And if you can limit the running game for the Aggies then your chances to win are much better. TAMU averages 210 yards a game in their wins and only 98 yards a game in losses, whereas it doesn't matter if you stop the pass against the Aggies as they average 296 yards a game in wins and 314 yards a game in losses.
The Aggie offensive line is young and a bit maligned. LT Luke Joeckel is a true freshman, while RG Patrick Lewis and RT Brian Thomas are both sophomores. LG Evan Eike is a junior while the lone senior is C Matt Allen. The rushing offense is the 49th best in the country at 162.29 YPG, but this line (and I'm sure that Johnson gets some blame too) is allowing 3.57 sacks a game, which is 113th in the country. And the line isn't significantly worse in wins (3.00) or losses (4.33).

CB Jarvis Phillips vs. WR Jeff Fuller
I can't imagine that D.J. Johnson will get the nod against Fuller and the Texas Tech defense needs their best cornerback on Fuller. Last week, Tuberville gave Phillips the defensive player of the game after his performance against Colorado and I wonder if it was intended to pump up Phillips a bit. The Texas Tech pass defense, as mentioned above, has been awful and Fuller is a true talent that can get behind a defense and is a physical receiver. Phillips had better bring his A-game this week as I think he's going to have his hands full.

| BRETT DEWHURST | |
| Position | Outside Linebacker |
| Year | Junior |
| Height/Weight | 5-11/197 |
| Stats | 16 Tackles | 1 Pass Break Up |
I mentioned that the Aggies win games when they're able to run the ball and it's interesting that Dewhurst is getting the start over Howard. I have to think that DC Willis watched tape from last year's rear-kicking and perhaps the plan is to have a rangy player, like Dewhurst, who is probably faster than Howard and can somewhat shadow Johnson and Tannehill. Of course, Dewhurst gives up 50 pounds to Johnson and 20 pounds to Tannehill and more times than not, Dewhurst isn't going to stop Johnson or Tannehill one-on-one, but if the thought is that Dewhurst can get a hit on Johnson (the team's 3rd leading rusher) which then gives the defense a chance to collectively make a play, then maybe this might work. Dewhurst is very active and I thought that Howard would be that type of player for Texas Tech this year, but obviously, the staff feels differently.

Best effort
It’s pretty evident that this game is going to take Tech’s best effort to pull off a win. Just looking at what Seth stated above scares the hell out of me. We will have to have our best defensive outing of the season to stop C-Mike and CG. The middle is going to get lots of attention all day long and our defense had better be able to finish tackles. Fuller is probably a top WR in the country and DJ Johnson has no business covering this guy. Jarvis Phillips may provide our best chance despite his youth. I won’t even mention JJ’s ability to run the ball. Know your assignments and finish tackles! A&M’s offense is better than what we faced last season with a much improved O-Line.
On the offensive side of the ball for Tech I say the same. This has to be our absolute best effort with no excuses about starting late etc… 3 and out will drain the life out of our defense. I think our O-line has improved and is capable of holding off the aggie pass rush enough to make plays. It’s purely going to be about offensive game planning and execution. If we come out flat early we will never be able to catch up to these guys. Kyle field is loud and difficult but once you get up on these guys the crowd noise goes away quickly as we have witnessed in the past. Lets not let these fans spend too much time kissing one another. This game falls largely on both the coaching staffs ability to plan. These teams are both struggling for identity in the south and loser will stay a loser more than likely for the remainder of the season. This is what I would consider the 1st BIG WIN for Tuberville if he can pull it off.

disagree about thier O-line
They have been injured and playing 2 – 3 freshman some this year. They did turn things around and play well against Kansas, but that was Kansas.
This should be a game that Whitlock and Duncan can cause big issues for the offense.

Fuller is a 1st rate reciever.
I wish he was on our roster. At 6-4ish and 215, with speed, and likely a mis match for most cb’s, plus he is an athletic football player…we have Johnson, 6-0, 190 backed by Neboh, 5-10, 175…Help !! I am hoping for a step it up kind of game from Johnson.
Now I am wondering what is going on with Wade, is he injured—I hope so.
Good grief, how did Agoucha all of a sudden become starting NT ? Well his 6-4, 341 lb frame suggests something…if his strength simply just matches his size and if he can keep his pads low, we may have something.
Darn it, Neboh is like a freshman walk on !!! Straight off the scout squad…
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Neboh has been on the 2 deep since the Spring i believe
I mentioned his ascension at least once in spring practice notes.

I think he’s only made it into the 2-deep since last week (my recollection). He’s been a player for sure and mentioned a couple of times, but not on the official 2-deep. I think the hamstring injury to Will Ford and Tre’ Porter moving to safety has opened up a spot at cornerback for Neboh.

thanks, guys
I did a jerk knee there more to speak to the depth than to abase Neboh…coaches are having difficulty finding 25 players to play a game.

It is painful....
to watch our db’s NEVER turn back for the ball. It is sickening, like watching someone cut their finger off in front of you. And we play behind the receivers and NEVER break on the ball, we keep them in front of us. I know that both of these are not by chance…that is how Willis thinks he has to play this year. Did I mention how awful it is to watch?
Dewhurst is in because he is a sure tackler, something sorely needed.
Our rush defense is solid, but it seems that our pass pressure is always just late and our coverage is non-existant….other than that we are great.

And I will go to my grave stating that Stick’s mobility was a big reason why….that and the Tech Mensa group made that trip

We have owned A+M for 10 years
We force them to pass the ball and they kick field goals and we score touchdowns. It is really that simple. If the current staff can’t figure that out then there is really no hope.

And we are not playing
those teams again…AnM have a better program over all than in the past 10 years.

I have seen
nothing that makes me think A+M is better, other than the usual preseason crap that we have heard for the last 10 years. They always have great talent, the problem is that they come in great and they are coached into being average.

To be fair....
You saying “I have seen nothing” is a little hard to quantify. A lot of really smart people who do nothing but get paid to know about college football think A&M should be better this year.

agree that Tech's pass defense is bad
but Oklahoma State’s pass defense is only 4 teams above Tech and only 12 yards per game better.
Somehow OSU gets the win.
Why can’t Tech?
"it may look like zombies destroyed it, but that's actually just Garland"
I am strictly talking about watching DB's play the reciever and the ball
It is maddening, and we will only get INT’s that bounce off of receivers or are airmailed

Our secondary is in horrible shape. It’s probably going to take some really solid recruiting to fix things back there. We lack size and speed which are killing us.

The biggest hit our secondary had
was Scott smith. Mizzou could be brutal.

I know!
This only proves that we should be putting 95% of the blame on Brown. Oklahoma State is only slightly better than us on pass defense (worse on rush defense) yet they manage to win games. I may be reaching but maybe it is because they have a legit OC.

I tend to think coaching won these games in the past 10 years and not so much our players. I think A&M has better athletes so it’s going to take above average coaching and that scares me.

I agree
On paper, A+M always beats us, it just hasn’t worked out that way on the field.

I think it’s because Leach was all about player development and intimidation. He not only intimidated his own players but opposing teams as well. Mike was never afraid to throw gas on the fire if he thought people would get a rise out of it. Not always PC but surely fun to follow. More with less is what this Tech team has always had going for it and I just hope we can continue that trend.

Aggie game week - Excuse a few Leach quotes gigging the Aggie Nation
"How come they get to pretend they are soldiers? The thing is, they arenβt actually in the military. I ought to have Mikeβs Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When youβre a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, weβll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."

"A&M wants to rip on our fans and all that. Our fans are as good as their fans are. One thing our fans donβt do is sit around and whine about other teamsβ fans. A&M spent a significant part of the week whining about what our fans are like. Itβs interesting to me that all these Aggiesβwhether theyβre at A&M or hereβare sitting around with halos over their heads and they have some divine expertise on fanmanship. I just donβt believe thatβs the case. For the record, I think our fans are better than the Aggie fans."

"Coaching won these games...not so much the players".
Really. So our robots were just better programmed by our superior coaches and then superiorly manuevered by the Head Pirate. The players, oops robots, had little to do with it since they skillfully executed per the programming without failure. The loss in 2009 is explained by a virus getting into the programming?
Well.... instead of the usual soldiers
They sent out fat little girlfriends and army rangers last year. While we put out Lubbock Montery’s second string. That’s my story anyhow. That or… even a blind squirrel finds a nut ever once and a while.
Yes, when Robert Johnson caught that pass in the corner of the endzone it was all Leach.

The difference btw what was and what is...
Raider’92 touched on this, but I wanted to expand that thought. One of the reasons we beat teams like TAMU in the past was the perception (and usually reality) that no lead was big enough. Add to that the idea that if you got behind, you were really screwed.
This perception by teams not named OU and UT caused the opponents to try too hard and eventually they made mistakes. Then we get the ball and put up another TD.
The issue now is our offense no longer intimidates other teams as it used to. They know we still have talented players, but we are not putting up points as we did in the past. So we are going to have to earn back that perception. Teams just don’t seem to be fearful of our offense anymore. Can’t blame them.
Anyway, just my 2 cents.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that angle.
In the past, opposing players and coaches might have been afraid of getting embarrassed, especially if they fell behind by a couple of touchdowns. This would cause them to press harder, possibly start making mistakes and BAM, suddenly you have the Nebraska game. Or TCU. Or A&M. Or Iowa State. Or A&M.
Now, we’ll always do our best to keep it close. Within 10 points if possible. 1st and 10 with 2 minutes to play, a 3 point lead, and we’re on the opponent’s 22? Victory formation baby!
It makes the coaching conference lunches so much more enjoyable in the offseason.
There are other ways to think of things.

I will be wearing my Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Although I am clueless what a dreamcoat is. But I’m wearing it anyway for good luck.
Aggies are a pretty good team
They almost beat Okie Lite in Stillwater and their defense is actually quite good (inspite of the meltdown against Missouri). I hope Potts bring his A game (and hope that he is not ailing from the stomach virus as well) to College Station.
Mizzou is very good
They have demonstrated this. OU, or at least their fanbase, is now assuming they’ll meet and beat them in the Big XII championship. As a matter of fact, the fans are looking past Mizzou. They’re grumbling about Stoops also. .
Just start Sheffield
The game will be won. My feelings and they don’t change. Right, oldschoolraider?

Our LT and RT are true freshmen. We need to be able to run the ball and obviously limit turnovers. I’m concerned about our poor tackling vs KU. If we tackle like that against y’all, you will score 40 on us. Cannot believe we are favored by 7.5.
