After the 4th game 2009

After the UH loss last year (that sits squarely on the Head Coach) Tech sat at 2-2.  The team was in complete disarray. Brandon Carter was suspended for an outburst in the locker room.  Marlon Williams was tweeting about coaches being late to meetings.  Coach banned twitter and FB for the players.  Potts looked like he couldn't find a hole in the ground (personally I think the Kindle hit scrambled his brain). Our supposed #1 receiver, Detron, looked terrible and was injured.  No  one had ever seen Sticks play and we all assumed Potts would play the whole season as a starter.

Anyone who says they were confident that Tech would turn it around is either a bold face liar or has a special crystal ball.  The Coach had lost the team at this point.  The pulled together as a team (or maybe it was Ruff) and turned the season around.  Obviously this game is the litmus test for Tech, but at this point I have to believe they can pull it together and still have a successful season.

Flame away.

Not saying I wasn’t nervous this time last year, but at I felt like we at least hadn’t played most of the easiest part of our schedule already. What would Brandon Carter break if he was on this team? Seriously, seeing Carter go off was crappy on the one hand, but on the other it was nice to see a player show that he cared enough to be that angry about it.

Also, our losses this year were some of the worst performance we’ve had as a team in recent memory, either offensively (UT) or defensively / special teams (ISU). Losses last year weren’t really extraordinarily bad performances, just a few mistakes and one whopper of a stupid coaching move. We didn’t deserve to be in either game this year.

The good news is that Saturday we can stop comparing this to last year either because we won and that made everything better, or because we’re 2-3 and we weren’t last year.

Be a team. Be the most excited to play. Be the best at doing your @#&$ing job.

FYI, it wasn’t Batch tweeting about the coach being late. It was Marlon Williams that did that.

Also, if I remember correctly, didn’t that meeting turn out to be canceled?

Human nature

9 years of experience with leach was substantially more comforting. I knew the players were pissed because leach was riding them hard. We had seen his teams turn a season just like the did a game when we thought it was lost.
Human nature….I’m not as confident with Neil brown as my oc.

There’s a lot to that thought. This staff is a completely unknown. We have no idea how they respond to true adversity or what adjustments they can make given the talent they have to work with (good or bad). It took history with Leach to develop that confidence, and it will take that same thing for us to have the confidence in this staff. That’s why patience is critical. We don’t know.

Some of us think we know how this staff will respond and are assuming we’ve seen the best we’ll see from this staff. That, to me, is an absurd line of thinking.

i look to see how he is going to respond in his statements….because I don’t know him from Adam.

I don't buy it

Why don’t you have faith in this team to turn it around? They did it last year. Coach Leach had lost them, I feel he had very little to do with the turnaround other than calling the plays.

Yes, I agree NB hasn’t called a really solid game yet, but there is more to turning this thing around than play calling.

by DarthRader on Oct 7, 2010 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

What have they done to earn my faith yet?

Hance et al are Red Raiders….should they have my blind faith just because of that? Faith is earned by actions…..I like seeing actions and words match, but definitely actions. If you don’t understand that the 9 years that Leach had previously coached counted for something as a fan….we are on different paths. I see from another post that you think that Tubs should get a pass for his success at Auburn. Problem is..he thinks he’s still there. He must adapt and have that success here.

Yes, I agree NB hasn’t called a really solid game yet, but there is more to turning this thing around than play calling.

Stating the obvious that he hasn’t called a ‘solid’ game yet…..thats kind of a big thing for an OC don’t you think?

Well, not to pick nits, but faith is a belief in something you haven’t or can’t see.

by Tech92 on Oct 7, 2010 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't randomly pick something to have faith in.

you are moved to it. And actually you can have faith in people and tangible things other than intangible or principles. That’s faith with a small f.

I was still convinced that we'd get to 8 wins...

but I was upset after the UH loss, and I agree that it sits squarely in ML’s hands. On the other hand, his winning track record earned him a mulligan in my mind.

The UT loss didn’t surprise me at all. I thought it was a toss up, just like this year. It was disappointing, but it wasn’t the heartbreaker that UH was.

Long Season

I don’t see Tech going to a bowl game this year. We need four more wins, from where are they going to come from? Not Baylor, OSU, Oklahoma or A&M and Weber State does not count. If out defense could not contain ISU, then how are they going to contain Baylor and their QB. Long season Raider fans/alumni, long season.

Hope

Hope is not a strategy and luck is not a tactic, but we need a little bit of both these days. In all 4 games we have played this year, I have not seen us have any good luck. It seems that we just haven’t had a break when we really needed it. Prime example..we are on the comeback in the ISU game and Detron fumbles (dropped) a pass without anyone even hitting him. We can complain about Detron, but we know he has great hands. The past seasons we have had some good luck along with some good execution. Maybe this game will be that game that we spark and also get a little love from the “luck” camp. Until I see an L next to this game on Saturday, we CAN still turn this season around.

Not a good comparison to this year

Tech lost by one point when Houston scored the winning touchdown with 49 seconds to go. Houston was ranked 17th at the time. We lost to #2 ranked Texas last year by 10 points – the same as this year but last year we had more total yards, more first downs and slightly higher time of possession than Texas did. There were plenty of reasons to be confident last year at this time.

This year we had less than half the total yards Texas had, 7 fewer first downs and 15 minutes less time of possession. Since then, Texas has demonstrated that they are clearly an inferior team to what they were last year.

Add that to the total embarrassment last week against Iowa State and there is no reason to be confident the remainder of this year. Now, I am an optimist at heart and a loyal fan and I will be cheering for the team like I always do but to say that this year’s 2-2 is the same as last year’s 2-2 takes a considerable leap of faith.

Yeah well...

We shall see when Tech plays Oklahoma State next week. It sure would be nice if Tech could pull out a win against them and keep them under 20 points and 300 yds of offense. I may be dreaming though…

So you are comparing ISU to Houston & UT will play for the the National Championship this year?

Neither one of these schools are in the top 25 and both kicked our ass!!!! Both losses last year were to top 25 teams(I know UT was ranked in the top 10 but they have proven they suck this year)

Instead of Texas Tech competing for the Big 12 south title, we are competing for last place in the Big 12. You win Championships by doing your job one play at a time not wearing a coat and tie to alumni functions and saying you will win championships. I’m so sick and tired of hearing “wait til Tubs gets his guys in here in 3 or 4 years”. We had our chance to do something great and we shit on all over if cause Leach out played the adminstration every single year. Anybody wonder why Leach interviewed somewhere else every year but never got hired? He didn’t want to go anywhere else- he wanted more money. What were Hance and Meyers really thinking when they didn’t extended Leach’s contract before Harrell’s Sr Year? Did they really think he would shit himself? For crying out loud- he had a 3 yr starter in his system, the best receiver in college football, 3 good running backs and an experienced offensive line. He goes 11-2 and then they get pissed he bent them over a barrell over the contract— who wouldn’t? Think about that when you go to work tomorrow— you have taken your company to new limits over the past 10 years and other companies are throwing money at you— would you seek more money from your current employer?

Support the team, drink the cool aid, believe Don Williams— play into the hands of Anders, Bailey, Hance, & Meyers. I do support the players (all players not just football) and I’m really sad they got caught up in this mess. The only program that has improved over the last 10 yrs has been the football team and those assholes figured out a way to screw it up. Texas Tech was the last school to agree to the new Big 12 and they didn’t even ask for the money that UT, OU and A&M are getting—- how do you think this conference would look with 8 schools? They needed Tech and Tech didn’t even realize it. Same dumbasses that negiotiated with Leach!

I’m sorry I’m so down on Texas Tech but Texas Tech ruined college football for me. I just don’t agree with the direction the school is headed. I honestly sat and watched the game yesterday with zero emotion—except when i laughed while our players just stood over a live ball and then Baylor ran it back for a TD.

Keep drinking the cool aid and waiting on 3 or 4 years from now. Nothing will change until the leadership changes. Yep Leach made some mistakes, lost some games he should have and won some games he should have lost but he was honest. If he lost the game for Tech he admitted it and if his players played like slap dicks – he let them know it. Tubberville will not take us to the next level and if he gets close he will be gone.

Roll up you pant legs out there in West Texas cause the bullshit will continue to rise as long as we let it.
