Prediction Time | Baylor Bears vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

(4-1, 1-0)

VS.

(2-2, 0-2)

I am doing everything humanly possible to change the mojo. Have even gone so far as to change the previews and what I write this week. This small sacrifice, getting little sleep and creating new logos, is me doing my part for a win. And before any Baylor fans complain, I'm going to apologize in advance. I haven't had much time to watch much Baylor football this year. Been sorta busy doin' stuff. Much of what I write will be based off of what stats. I'm giving it my best and at least I'm being honest about it.

INFORMATION: Detail
OPPONENT: Baylor Bears (4-1, 1-0)
DATE: October 9, 2010
LOCATION: Dallas, TX
WEATHER: Sunny 85
TIME: 11:00 p.m. CST
TV: Fox Sports Southwest
RADIO: Affiliates
GAME CAST: Fox Sports

Synopsis of the Game | Just not seeing a lot of defense in this game.  Look for an offensive game from both Baylor and Texas Tech.  Contain RGIII and the game should be close, let RGII run loose then I see bad things, very bad things.  Torres needs to step up and be the difference maker he was last year.  Whitlock needs to anchor that defensive line and help not allow any running lanes.

Offensive MVP | WR Alexander Torres

Defensive MVP | NG Colby Whitlock

Final Score | Baylor Bears 38, Texas Tech Red Raiders 40

Three keys for Tech

Control the Tempo with the offense, stay on the field stay out of 3rd and long, don’t scare over 4th and very short. Convert in the Red zone. Goal is :play from 2 x scores up from the end of the first quarter forward.

Throw into a rhythm, draw, shovel and QB bootleg just 3 x times but do it on first down. Fake the punt reverse or kick off reverse, do it and they will respect it..

Stay at home, strip blockers, get the hands up tip a couple passes early. Middle defender (spy) must not get tangled up – RG(3rd) keys off which way the LG/ C / RG push the containment guy at the 3 x Mississippi count

I am picking the Red Raiders To Win.

If there was ever a must win for Tubby, this is it. By now I am sure The Board, President, Adminstration, and Coaches have all given Tubby a copy of LR’s letter. He has indeed read it. He is feeling the pressure from every where. He wins or loses with this audience tomorrrow. I took the liberty to speak for everyone here on DTN. Hope you guys aren’t mad.

I think the key to the game is simply let Air Raid do its thing. Nothing fancy, just run six to seven plays well, and march the ball up and down the field. The defense needs to go back to its roots. Stay at home and just keep everything in front of you. Willis, please try not to out think your self tomorrow. Keep it simple.

I want to say it again, win tomorrow and we wear Red against OK State, lose and we all wear Black. Win or lose, this is our team, and not yours Tubby, you just get to date us.

My prediction, Tech 38 Baylor 34. Another Red Raider First Down.

Football outsiders: those are stinging comparisons

The fact is I can’t find truer words in print..
" Their short passing game and Robert “Hot Tub” Griffin III’s run-pass threat will test a Tech defense that is lacking in confidence after a 52-38 loss at Iowa State last weekend. Tech fans loved Mike Leach for the most part, but they embraced the high-ceiling potential of a Tommy Tuberville era. "

Yeah it’s been an embrace and I’m not throwing Coach Tubs under the bus.. but you the Tech staff have got to show me you can manage a game. Use the weapon. Throw, shovel dink, YAC..

“If the Red Raiders were to start 0-3 in conference play, however, Tuberville would likely lose any benefit of the doubt that he may have brought to town. Kansas State-Nebraska might see 60 percent runs, and Baylor-Tech might see 70 percent passes.”

This game will come down to who can hold onto the ball wide outs versus d backs..
and BTech I agree, dont see how each team misses scoring 4 x times each..

Score and keep scoring

Tech needs to score as many points as possible. I doubt our defense handles RGIII all day long. I expect Baylor to definately score lots of points but hopefully we can score more points in that 60 minute period. I think this game depends mostly on Neal Brown’s ability to caoch this offense early. If we have to play catch up, we lose the game. If we have good scoring momentum and eliminate turn-overs, we win. My confidence level in this game is about 50%. Defense needs to contain RGIII and cover the pass. I see lots of scoring in this game on bath sides.

Score: Tech 35, Baylor 24
OMVP: Batch
DMVP: Duncan

Key is defense....

I think, in my none expert opinion, that the D will have to go to more of a zone with a cover 2 over the top. If we play man to man RG III just has to roll out and then take off because the WR’s for Baylor will just run tech’s DB’s off the line. If we play zone we force RG III to throw and we keep everything in front of us defensively. The only thing that makes me nervous about that is that puts pressure on our safety play, which does not allow our safeties to fly to the ball to make tackles. Which means we can’t have missed tackles at the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, except that RGIII has world class speed and, what’s that? Yeah, yeah. Look, I know we lost our DE Smith indefinitely due to violation of team rules. Yeah, the guy that’s had 3 sacks and anchors the left side of the line, yeah, I know. Doesn’t matter, we’re still gonna win, WHOOO-HOOO!. Here, drink this kool aid…

Special Teams

I predict that our special teams will be the deciding factor. Both offenses have the potential to run up the score. Giving Baylor a short field to work with will cost us the game.

We have the ability to win this one but we must capitalize on every opportunity to get points i.e. field goals and (God help us) onside kicks.

by MojoRaider on Oct 8, 2010 8:38 AM CDT reply actions

OFFENSIVE LINE

The O Line is gonna make the difference. If they don’t block potts won’t have any time to throw and no running game. Of course the defense needs to make some stops but if they don’t, our offense needs to outscore their offense and the line is the key. and no mistakes and no turnovers.

Prepared to take a beating

Who should I believe…Tech or my lying eyes.

I haven’t seen Tech play a complete game yet. The special teams and mental mistakes killed the Raiders last week against a much weaker opponent. Baylor and Briles want this game bad. Tech has yet to prove it can stay focused, execute and put a quality opponent.

My heart says Raiders but my head says Bears. I hope I am wrong and will gladly take the ridicule of picking against the home team. Just too many concerns for me to pick Tech at this point.

I am with you ...

Way too much uncertainty.

The coaches have not convinced me that they can coach this team. One thing I remember Tubs commenting on how he hires coaches. The first thing he looks for in a coach is his recruiting skills. (they have to be salesmen) Then in so many words he said that just about anyone can do X’s and O’s.

If that is true, then we are seeing why our offense (4th in the country last year), which has not “changed” and who has a zillion starters returning currently ranked 60th.

Not everyone can do X’s and O’s.

Back against the wall, this team will respond

Now this could be one of those WTF was I thinking moments, but I’ve seen this team respond in similar situations (OU game, Alamo Bowl, etc).
I agree with Centex, these teams don’t really like each other at all. And Baylor always seems to play with a chip on their shoulder against us. IMO, this is to our advantage. I think we respond well and elevate our play.
Prediction = Tech more points than Baylor. I’m thinking we finish in low 40’s, maybe Baylor in low 30’s.

OMVP = Detron Lewis (needs to have a breakout game, quickly)
DMVP = Cody Davis or Sonier/Fehoko (whoever plays SLB)

I'm am with you that the leaders on the team need to step up and inspire...

but it seems to me that the players also look to the coaches to be rallied and directed. I just think back to Leach at halftime at the Insight Bowl v. Minnesota. He rallied, inspired confidence, and directed the team. They remained calm, trusted the system, were focused, and executed flawlessly.

I just don’t know if these coaches have the same effect on this team yet. Here’s to hoping that the will.

Technically that is true. If RG2 does run loose on us, we really suck. But then again, we would win the game since I’m pretty sure he has no eligibility. He may be able to pound out some 3-5 yrd gains, but we aren’t that slow on defense. I’m pretty sure we’d contain him.

Yes, if we want to win some games, we need to make this change. But if ego is more important to Brown and Tubs then Potts will play this game and the rest of this season and I don’t think we will win any of the games with the exception of Houston and Weber State from here on out. I will be really surprised if Potts can play consistently through out this game, because I haven’t seen him do so in the past season and a half.

Not a Potts apologist by any means, as is well documented. But he did a really nice job against ISU. He needs to quit hitting the receivers right in the hands, though ; )

I don’t know if Sticks is better technically than Potts when Potts is ‘on’, but I think we need a spark, some leadership, etc. Potts is streaky … the offense has been coming out flat a lot. A Dose of Reality

Look, All, I get no pleasure out of saying this, but I have been trying to temper everyone’s expectations about this team…more specifically, about the team’s coach. We have to be honest and look at the body of work put forth by both teams up until this point. Who is thinking that Tech will win? What have you seen that leads you to this conclusion? Because all I’ve seen is a poorly coached, undisciplined football team with way more talent on it than even it’s head coach seems to realize. It’s not the talent, it’s the coach. And tight ends, we need tight ends…ugh. Baylor will put 42 points and 350 yards on us tomorrow. Prediction for 2010: 3-9. Get used to it.

Just a guess, but I don’t think Tuberville coaches dropping passes; making poor reads; blown coverages; slow defenders; or holding.

Is he our dream coach? No. But to think any of the problems on the field have nothing to do with mistakes players make in executing fairly simple plays, then you aren’t watching. It’s not just one thing that is keeping Tech from being on the right side of the score.

But 3-9? I will seriously bet 5 figures on that with you.

0-3 in conference start is not good

After reading the below, it is apparent we will NOT be able to contain RG III using backup DE. Soooo.

Sorry. guys and gals. Nothing this team has done so far convinces me that thay will be able to recover from such a yucky start to the season and go on to have a good season one under the new coaching staff. Whatever the new staff thinks they know about this team, they are obviously either wrong or going about this the wrong way. The Baylor game and ythe next few games will determine where this team is at, and I am afraid it may be right back to where it was before Dykes arrived on the scene. As much anticipation I had for this team to have a great year, I now have zero.

By the way

I want Potts to have a record performance tomorrow and lead Tech in destroying Baylor. I apologize to all of you for so much negativity, but I am really unhappy with how this team haslooked so far, even in the two wins. They just are not as smooth and polished as I felt they would be. I don’t know how much Potts has contributed to that negativity, but I have a feeling it is significant enough to mean the difference in being 3-1 or even 4-0 instead of 2-2. I really hope Tech wins this by a bunch, though.

RGIII will flop

But is that enough to beat Baylor? Because we will need Potts to be at the top of his game, which has happened only once (vs. OU) in the past season and a half. His inconsistency has cost us two shootouts during the same period (Vs. Houston; Vs. Iowa State) even though he has shown flashes of brilliance in these games.

I don't know if we will win, but IF we lose tomorrow

I don’t ever want to see Tech play another game in the Cotton Bowl. Sorry Scovells, I know you all have done a lot for Tech over the years & your granddad was Mr Cotton Bowl, but that place has some bad voodoo where our Red Raiders are concerned.

11PM game time?

No wonder I didn’t see it listed at 11AM on Fox Sports. Seriously, on Verizon Fios in Plano right now the game isn’t listed as playing, and I need to Tivo it because I’m going to the Rangers game. Anyone else with Fios noticed that?

Baylor will be improved

Briles is a solid coach. Baylor will be much improved over previous years. My guess is Baylor should win. Like it or not, too much of a learning curve will keep Tech looking out of sync. I do believe Tech will show signs of improvement.
Too many fans expect Tech’s offense to be the fluid yardage eating machine of the past. This will happen, not yet though. Like it or not, Tech has too many new coaches involved. Those retained, (Cumbie and Moore) were not the brightest bulbs on the tree. Prediction: Baylor 31 Tech 27
