why does doege have a leg up on the competition?
Seth Doege : 47-68 (69.11%) : 1 INT : 530 Yards (7.79 YPA): 5 TD
Jacob Karam : 23-34 (67.64%) : 326 Yards (9.58 YPA): 3 TD
As we see here, karam had half the amount of tries as doege did. if we multiply karam's stats we would see the following.
Seth Doege : 47-68 (69.11%) : 1 INT : 530 Yards (7.79 YPA): 5 TD
Jacob Karam : 46-68 (67.64%) : 652 Yards (9.58 YPA): 6 TD
so how is that better than doege?? look at the damn YPA!! its 2 MORE DAMN YARDS MORE PER PLAY. it would add to more than 100 more yards for karam if we even up the amount of tries. what kind of stupid conclusion is this.
oh and yes... lets dont forget, karam is two years younger than doege and he evens up with him already.....
nothing against doege, just comparing stats. and karam blows doege apart

For what it's worth..
Comparing these two probably isn’t worth your time. I’ve heard a certain freshman by the name of Scotty Young will surpass these two in the spring.
If brewer doesn't...
but we have faith in tubs to handle this position

Faith in Tubbs?
After he single-handedly wrecked Tech in 2010, who can have faith in him? He is a “salesman”, not a coach! He’ll screw the QB decision up just as he did the offense.
I would not be surprised if Scotty Young tranferred to another school. His talents will be wasted at Tech.

I have been thinking along this line
myself. Even if it does not happen, you can be certain that he and his family are reviewing the Tech situation since if my memory is correct, Young was re-thinking his committment after Leach’s firing and certainly is probably doing the some re-thinking after watching the coaching ‘system’ decline under Tuberville this season.
You are so right Merk.....
especially single handedly f*6cking up a program that almost was. It won’t surprise me if several players with Scotty’s talent transfers. In fact, I’m sure other D1 schools are recruiting our young talent as we speak. You can forget about Brewer. He’s way too talented to fuck up his shot at success. This whole thing isn’t sad, it’s tragic. Part of me wishes we never had a 9 or 10 win season.
The starter will be Tubby's Yes Sir Man

Pretty good
I read Don Williams groveling piece somebody posted from a day or so ago and it would seem that being that kind of a**-kisser should be embarrassing for somebody with real honesty.
Dude
First off, stats mean nothing. If they did Sticks would have played over Potts b/c his stats were far better last year. No at Tech we play whomever we think looks “good”. It’s a trait we have picked up the last two years.
I'm still not sure that he is.
Think about it, all summer we were hearing how good Sticks was doing in practice and bla bla bla, then suddenly Potts won a competition hitting cereal boxes off of golf carts and he’s our starter. I’ve heard too much about Karam from folks that know more about it than most of us. They will both be great, but Karam would be a media darling. Just think of Jordan Shipley’s guitar shit on ESPiN, except Karam actually has talent at his musical instrument!
because Sticks did SOOO much...
..in our win against mizzou, and our win in Norm…wait.
I think we have bigger problems than who is playing QB next year, considering the O-line we currently have, you could put a bag of stale doritos behind center, and it wouldn’t matter.
Maybe we could just run the wildcat all game?
Good luck at getting "Sticks Fans" to believe you...
I said all along that this new system fits Potts better than Sticks, but would they listen? The first half of the Mizzou game proved my point well enough (but I’m sure that win had nothing to do with Potts coming in….in their eyes).

This is a moot point with both guys eligibility done (at least for conference games)
But what does Steven Sheffield have to do with whether Taylor Potts has the skills to be a division 1 college football QB? The existence of SS on the team doesn’t make his passes less accurate, his reads too long, his staring down one reciever rather than reviewing the entire field. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do in life but it kills me to think how good the Texas Tech football team could have been the last two years with a decent QB running the show. And I promise this is the last time I engage in a “Is Taylor Potts a good QB” debate. That is now officially beside the point. Thanks to the new regime & its “tweaks” we have much larger fish to fry.
Still at it I see Mr. Brown....
Great showing that first half against Mizzou by your boy……….
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Nov 17, 2010 12:19 PM CST up reply actions
Your reading skills need work
Steven Sheffield has not a whit to do with whether Taylor Potts stinks as a QB. period. I have no boy.
Sticks doesn't have anything to do with how good/bad of a QB Potts is...
but if you still think he would have done any better this year than Potts then you’re beyond delusional.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Nov 17, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions
And if you don't have a boy...
then why respond to yet another one of my posts where I state that Potts was the right choice over Sticks at QB?
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Nov 17, 2010 12:24 PM CST up reply actions
Because Taylor Potts is an awful QB
Which I thought I had made abundantly clear. But everytime I say “Potts” you hear “Sticks”. Ear wax buildup I suppose.
The fact still remains...
..we threw sticks back there and just as less got done, that had been getting done all year.
Like I said, a stale bag of doritos as QB or Michael Vick, if you offensive line sucks, you QB will suffer.
by ttutyler on Nov 17, 2010 1:37 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Both are average
I don’t think with the offense we ran this season it would have mattered which one of these guys started. Both have positive and negative attributes. Neither one plays at the next level IMO. We were due for a not so great QB after the past 8 or so years.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
"We started too late" - Neal Brown
Really?
You’re going to praise Potts and bash Sheffield over the fact that Potts had 3 series where he played like he gave a damn in that game? Not to mention completely ignoring the fact that the play calls on offense were different for those 3 series than any other point in the game. Potts did look better for 3 series, sure. But how many good looking series has he had this season? 9? 10? The kid sucks. Someone else should have took over the reigns be it Sticks, Doege, Karam or whomever. Actually someone else should have taken over the reigns at OC before the season ever began, then we could argue about QB’s. With Brown calling the shots, you could put Peyton Manning back there and still suck.
My life force is drained
going back and forth on Potts. I sure wish we went with karam, doege or young in order to give ourselves a future after this transition year. We thought Potts was inconsistent because of the kindle hit last year….it’s just his m.o.
Clearly sticks was not in good standing with tubs, and didn’t look good in the suspect playcalling when he was in (not that it was great otherwise). I like pots as a human, and he has taken years off my life as a qb. 2/3rds of this year, he was who I thought he was and 1/3rd he was worthy of what formerly was an esteemed position…but the algorithm to figure this out wasn’t discovered and his leash was too long.
I think I like brewer for next year..

I did an ancient post search & you and I had this same conversation in mid-August
Even then I had nothing to say about Sticks:
1) Start Karam
2) Karam looked fine in the spring game. Potts looked anything but all last season
3) College careers are short. One year is plenty of time for a starter to begin to show improvement. During that first year. If there was inmprovement last year, I missed it.
by mbrown603 on Aug 23, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions
.Karam looked fine… but have you seen Potts run the new offense yet?
I don’t see how you can discredit him until you see him run the offense. He obviously showed the coaches he was better than Karam.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Aug 24, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Stick did more in the first quarter than Potts did in the fourth quarter :)
Potts however scored his touchdowns in the second and third quarters, where Sticks wasn’t given a chance. Against OU, the coaches had a much longer leash on Potts to mess around till the game was almost decided before Sticks was brought in as an afterthought. Unlike in the Missouri game where the coaches were a lot more eager to dismiss Sheffield and bring Potts in. Sticks however did more than what Potts did in the A&M game!
Living in lubbock has its advantages
I’ve talked with a current (nameless for their sake) football player on the team, and its not the most reliable thing in the world, but he believes Doege will win next year. The coaches believe his game experience gives him the edge.
Don’t forget, Doege has legs. His Sophomore year of highschool, he had approximately 8 ypc, with over 70 carries, which is significant, even in weak competition.
Neil Brown’s offense works incredibly well with the Zone Read. Heck, it has made Taylor Potts look like he new how to run a few times!
As for me, my money is on Jacob Karam. He run’s a sub 4.6, 40, and has a stronger arm than Doege.
Ready for the next set of QB's
I’m really done with Sheffield and Potts and in my opinion they are equal as far as what they can do this season. Both have had opportunities and we’re still a pretty bad football team. The next group should be interesting but I’m hoping for more than a 2 year starter.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
"We started too late" - Neal Brown
QB
Im not sold on any of them yet. The only reason doege has the advantage is because he is the only one with game experience. But Young and Karam could possibly be better but we really don’t know yet. We willl have to see how the spring shapes up.
We need a smart quarterback that is a good leader and makes good decisions on the field.
We shouldn’t Start someone because they are faster, or have a stronger arm. If we are in the rebuilding process we need to start a freshman and give them 3 or 4 years to start like Andy Dalton and Kellen Moore.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
Our next qb will be.....

Speaking of
QB’s
I saw a HS game on tv in the 09 season and Scotty Young looked great. I think he’s enough of Potts (strong arm) with enough of Sticks (mobility) to be REALLY effective in the Air Raid.

Brewer is the real deal...
… seen him play, heisman like talent, will never go to a program like current day Tech, doesn’t have to, why would he? Tragic. Best thing we could do is recruit the JUCO’s and lower admission requirements and schedule at least 5 Weber States next year
Half of your posts are annoying.
Why are you so down on Tech? I mean I’m down on Tech right now but not anything like you. We are not a losing program. I’m pissed about the current coaches and think they are sucking it up right now. But I’m not about to freak out in the way that you are. It is madness.
And Brewer has passed for under 1,500 yards this year according to one of the other posts. That is not very many yards…. maybe his team sucks but who knows.
The staff would be making a HUGE mistake if the don't give Young a shot
Then again, I’ve seen the atrocious play calling they’ve had this year. So, I can’t say I would be surprised if he didn’t get a chance.

I think we may have a Young vs Doege debate next year. And of course the second string guy will be the fan favorite.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
I doubt he leaves
He would have to sit out a whole season if decided to jump ship. The kid is so close to having a shot at starting next season so why would he bolt instead of competing? The guy people need to be worried about right now is Brewer staying with Tech.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
"We started too late" - Neal Brown
if you look at his recruiting profile the other teams he has considered
(Baylor Bears, Clemson Tigers, Rice Owls, Tulsa Golden Hurricane, Texas Longhorns)
already have other top QB’s committed.
But i doubt he would choose one of them teams over Tech. Longwhorns are already loaded.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
there is now worry about Brewer.
I’ve commented a couple of times earlier about Brewer. No way Brewer signs with Tech for several reasons. He’s got Heismanlike talent. Seriously.
One more thing on Brewer.
See, this is the thing. Older fans will get this, younger fans won’t. The only way would ever get a look from a top 5 High School Recruit is to have a gimmick. In other words, Brewer committed to Tech last year, and it was based on what the offensive scheme (gimmick) offered a QB and his career stats. We could recruit just about any QB and Receiver we wanted and they would listen because of the “offense” scheme or gimmick. Now we don’t have that scheme “gimmick” or “gig” if you like. So, why would a heismanlike talent go to Tech? exactly, he wouldn’t.
I still think Brewer signs with Tech. I’ll eat crow at the next tailgate if I’m wrong.

From what i have seen Brewer is a strong commit....

I am thinking
similarly. If a good recruit looks at Tuberville’s ‘system’ it is extremely unimpressive on many different levels. Should Tech do poorly in the next couple of games and a potential bowl game, T’ville had better have BS given by God because it would be clear that Tech is descendant and there are other schools in Texas on the ascendant.
I think there is good reason to expect of fear some quality people to choose other than Tech. I have no idea how Kadrone Boone is doing at LSU (and I am not going to look it up) but I would be he is glad he did not choose Tuberville Tech.
OK
If that gimmick (offensive scheme) was the Air Raid, I sure as hell wish we would run it again. It did win a lot of games for us! (And yes, I’m an older fan who remembers the awful Dockery/Moore offenses that couldn’t beat a local high school team.)
Why was Young not redshirted?
Anyone know why they didn’t redshirt Scotty this season so he could have an extra year of eligibility?
If he doesn’t play, he’s redshirted…there’s actually not some form or something the school sends in. A player has five years to complete four years of eligibility. If Young didn’t see any plays this year, he still has four years of eligibility. Did he get any game action so far? I’m not sure.
I thought I saw some scary stats somewhere after the OU game
that seemed to indicated Young had entered the game. I couldn’t bear to watch the game and was hoping I had misread the stats. Did anyone else see this, or was I just having a bad dream?
So his redshirt is gone!
Has Tuberville explained why he sacrificed a year of eligibility so late in the season?
Thanks, Seth
I wondered why no one was asking why the coaching staff would do such a thing.
ESPN also shows Young throwing the pick
http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=501981
If it wasn’t Young and it wasn’t Doege, who threw the pick?
ESPN and the others are incorrect.
There were only two interceptions in the game …. both by Potts.
Here are all of the Stats from the game:
http://www.texastech.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2010-2011/tt10.html#GAME.IND

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
Tech must have corrected the error
Your link is to the same page on the official site that I referenced above. Young no longer shows up in the list of those throwing passes.
Thanks for the details.
I figure ESPN picked-up the original incorrect stats
from the Tech web-site
YW
NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
I was confident that calling attention to the error on DTN
would get it corrected!
Instead of all these allsome QB recruits, I’d love to see a great LB,a great DL and three great OL. Then lets go get an average kid who can run all over the field and hit about 60% of his passes.
I expect Doege to be leading.
He was a Mike Leach choice, even with the knee problems. I like that…and I have to believe that somehow the knees are not fragile…else he would not be risking so much just to play.
I also want to see Karam get his keys when his time comes…for similar reasons.
Then Young, then Brewer.
The thought of seeing TTU qb’s in the record books is one that makes a lot of difference to me and I believe to continue the line of good college qb’s that we have see on the field the past ten years…each one of them are important.
I never want to see another season like the last two, where we have had injuries and inconsistencies, mar the image of a TTU qb.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
