Hope Springs Eternal: It's amazing what the possibility of a quarterback change can do to improve the out look of a community. Just remember folks that the defense is still really bad and a change at quarterback may not equal wins. I said this after the game, which is that with a handful of games in 2009 and 2010, QB Taylor Potts is a guy that completes 60-65% of his passes for about 7 yards/attempt. We know what he is, and it's not all bad, but when those inconsistencies creep up at inopportune times, then it can be devastating for a team. KLBK's Brandon Rawe tweeted this yesterday:
Of Taylor Potts' 11 drives vs. A&M, 2 went for TD's, 5 were 3&out, 7 were 5 plays or fewer
That's it in 140 characters or less. Again, not everything is Potts' fault, but the difference in the offense between Potts and QB Steven Sheffield is staggering, no matter who is calling plays.
And yesterday, per LAJ's Don Williams and DT's Mike Graham, head coach Tommy Tuberville opened the door for both Potts and Sheffield to compete for time. Here's Tuberville:
"They’ll get pretty much the same reps (in practice)," Tuberville said during his weekly Monday news conference. "We’ll put more of (an emphasis) on whoever does the best. Play this like a game. Play it during the week. Be ready to go in practice, and maybe this will help us."
And although I don't want to fall into the habit of thinking that Tuberville is choosing his words carefully, I feel like that Tuberville is essentially giving Sheffield a road-map for what he wants: practice hard, don't improvise and follow the game-plan. If Sheffield does those three things, then the chances of Sheffield starting is almost guaranteed. Non-Cowboy fans will tire of these comparisons, but I recall one of the things that Parcells disliked about Romo was that he didn't always follow the game-plan and was a bit too wild for Parcells' taste. This feels eerily similar in that if Sheffield would just do what he's asked, then he just might have been the starter from the get-go.
And Potts didn't shy away yesterday at the Monday press conference:
"If I’m on the field, I’m confident in myself that we have a good chance to win," said Potts, who has started 12 games in a row. "If that’s not the case, I’m going to be a team player and support everybody on the team and, from the sidelines, help our team win."
Torres Out for Year: DT's Mike Graham and LAJ's Don Williams did confirm that IR Alexander Torres is out for the year. This stinks and the names suggested, Darrin Moore and Eric Ward, are both outside receivers, or at least I think they should be, so I'm not sure who fills Torres' spot other than Austin Zouzalik, who Tuberville said is only at 60% at the most. Other inside receivers are Blake Kelley and Cornelius Douglas. I also wonder if it's time for Aaron Fisher to get some time.
Press Conference Quotes: LAJ's Don Williams and DMN's Mike Graham both have selected quotes from yesterday's press conference. In the LAJ article, there's the quote from Tuberville about how the offense hasn't changed, which I'm sure will raise the ire of some folks (although perhaps a different quarterback will make a difference). LAJ's Don Williams also has the three positives and three negatives that Tuberville always highlights during the press conference.
The DT also has some video of the press conference:

Coach tt about sticks “he brings energy and we need some of that now”. That’s what most of us who wanted a qb change have been saying all year. This offense has looked so flat for long stretches of games. Why not bring in Sheffield against ut, okie st, leave him in and see what happens.
by wcraider on Nov 2, 2010 6:49 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
It will be Potts
This competition thing at this point is bogus. He is doing it because he knows he is under pressure and Sheffield is the QB that can get it done. So, this dog and pony show of a competition, which will be ultimately won by Potts and Potts again will lead us to another humiliating loss to Missouri.

Nailed it
This is a smoke screen if you ask me. And a load of crap. We have 8 games worth of playing time with Potts, they know what they have there. If they are even gonna consider making a change, why not give 100% of the reps to Sticks and give him the job for this game and see what he can do???
It’s a bogus attempt and I’m pretty confident CTT’s pride will keep Sticks out of the starting line up.

How did these coaches know
A 4-4 teams qb controversy sucks…too many warning signs before we were in the big 12 south cellar.
Would really like to see a defensive emphasis on finding the ball in the air….db’s are not turning to find the ball and that’s not by accident.

Consider ...
That our DB’s coach, Travaris Robinson, only has two years of coaching experience: one at Western Kentucky and one at Southern Miss.
He replaces the retired Carlos Mainord, a coach who knew how to coach and recruit. Mainord has oodles and oodles of proven experience at the D-1 level and the NFL. He had the ability to mold inexperienced players into all conference, NFL types.
If he or someone of his caliber was here, I would almost guarantee that this DB technique issue would be close to being solved.

I agree
I tend to think we have grab bag of position coaches among the defensive side that aren’t helping us improve weekly. I do understand we have been hammered with injuries but technique was bad before that. The inexperience among this staff is compounding the problems.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
"We started too late" - Neal Brown
How can it be
that Robinson, the players from last season, Willis, Tuberville, men who have seen a lot of football, not know what the db’s are doing regarding finding the football in the air ?
It is kind of like the we can’t tackle thing that went on for years until Coach McNeill started focusing on practicing tackling………..shocking…

I believe that they do see it ...
but they can’t get the guys to adjust … and I think that is the difference between a proven coach and an unproven one.

Priceless quote
“If I’m on the field, I’m confident in myself that we have a good chance to win,” said Potts
Ha ha! just like he was confident in our other wins against texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
Would you expect him not to be confident? I’d rather have athletes that are confident that they can win games rather than those that say that they have no chance. I’m not giving Potts a pass here, because I think he is what he is, but I don’t find anything wrong with his statement.
Go Raiders . . .

Nothing wrong with his statement at all...
but lining up Potts versus ou and Mizzou is like me traveling to the next marathon and expecting to win. It’s the coach’s issue, not Potts.

seth,
Yes, I would expect him not to be confident. If I made straight F’s in organic chem., I don’t think I’d be loaded with confidence. How could ya? What facts would that confidence be
based on. Nothing! Granted he hasn’t made STRAGHT F’s,but I think it very safe
to say he has an F average in football ( for a lack of a better analogy)

I disagree.
I’m sure that you are not as likely to admit each and every fault to the public and holding press conferences doing so or calling your local paper and admitting every fault that you have. It’s part of the deal with athletes, you expect them to be confident, but not too confident.

I still disagree. So you’re saying that you want every player and every person that’s not been good at something to fully admit that they have no confidence to do a particular task? And 18 – 22 year old college football players are supposed to admit this on a day-by-day basis. I remember when I was in college, I was awesome at everything. Now, I know better. Even then, I still don’t fault any player for lacking in confidence. Seems like an awfully small criticism about a player, especially when it’s evident to you and me that we can see he’s not getting the job done. I still don’t want or expect him to say it.

These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no brave last words, only their eyes, filled with confusion, questioning "Why?" I don’t think they were wondering why they were dying, but why they had ever lived. When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? QB Change v. Bad Defense
I understand that a QB change will not likely result in a win v. the next two opponents b/c we do still have a struggling defense, but I would rather see an exciting offense get outscored than a dull one.
Agree with Seth on the confidence issue
Potts has and should have confidence. His problem is consistent execution not talent. He has at times performed extraordinarily well on one or more drives completing pass after pass. Elsewhere in the same game couldn’t buy a first down with Donald Trump’s money.
So Sheffield is a little like Romo. That is not all bad and could brighten up the next couple of games which at the moment look like dismal routs with the D that we have. Either QB could be disappointing in Norman with MO in Jones a toss up for some O spark to make it interesting. At this point, it would be nice not to be embarrassed in the next two to be “confident” enough to pull out the last two. The 2008 dismantling in Norman pretty much destroyed that team.
Regarding the offense
I gotta disagree with CTT. Maybe he is referring to the fact that we run a spread offense this year and we ran the spread in past years. But beyond the name, I don’t see much in this offense gameplan that looks like we has been successful in the past.
You can pick out a few plays here and there that are similar (i.e WR screen), but this offense looks quite a bit different to me. And I have an Aggie friend who was at the game and has watched Tech a lot and he said it looked very, very different from what we have done previously.
I’m not a CFB coach, but I just don’t buy CTT’s line about this offense.

yep, we wore helmets and shoulder pads in 2008 also, just like this year
does not mean a freakin thing. tubs is a total waste and a mental midget.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I caught that also
the best I can come up with is similar to his we are not having problems scoring td’s, we are having problems being consistent comment.
The only sense I can make of that is that he believes we have the people who can score, but the team is not playing good team football…whatever the reason, who ever is the goat.
For the offense comment, I am thinking that we are seeing part of the offense rather than the whole, because that is what we can execute….taken in the context that the changes incorporated—like the focus on zone blocking—are not really significant changes in the offense.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Potts
I’m with Seth here too. I’m glad Potts is confident and I would hope every player on the field goes out thinking they are good enough to win each game. If they don’t have that attitude, they should not be on the field.
IMWTx
"We thought we were too good to play Texas f-ing A&M. Now how in the F can that be?" ML
Game management vs winning
I see TT and possibly NB wanting their QB to manage the game and not loose it. The problem is that the Air Raid is not designed to manage a game but to impose our offensive will on the defense. If our QB is only trying not to screw up we only make throws that are what the defense is allowing. Hence we have more lateral passes than deep balls. The Air Raid depends on spacing and forcing the D to cover the entire field. Once we start managing the game instead of imposing our game plan it becomes a chess match between NB and the D coordinator. Then the inexperience or experience takes over in play calling vs defensive calls. Sheffield can bring the ability to go out and try to make plays instead of not screwing up. That is the attitude that we need to win.
Doing more with less...
Sheffield is a bit like Tyrone Thurman, Zach Thomas, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola and so many others that have played at Tech. His heart and energy allow him to accomplish more with less ability. This has been Techs livelihood over the many years I have been a fan. We HAVE to rely on those players that bring more to the table than ability. The blue chippers usually go elsewhere.
Potts has the ability to be stunningly good…and stunningly bad. It has nothing to do with his arm. It has to do with his head. He can go from super confident to Eeyore in seconds. Mostly after a sack, big hit or interception.
Put in Sticks! Not because of his arm, but because of the intangibles he brings. I think we will see the offense become better than the sum of its parts. Who knows, it may even wash over to the defense.
Tubboy, you need to learn this.
Could not agree more. And thanks for the reminder of Tyrone Thurman - loved that guy - talk about heart!!
That is countrier than a biscuit. - Garth Brooks
Sticks has a much better arm than Potts
Because he can control the speed & placement of the passed ball in game conditions & Potts can’t. The only thing Potts beats Sheffield at is height.
Why is Austin Z. only at 60%? Don't recall what is his injury?
That is countrier than a biscuit. - Garth Brooks
Leach was asked on the radio the other day...
What has happened to Texas Tech? He said he didn’t know…All he knows is that they returned sixteen starters from last year. I wonder what he meant. Hmmmmm……
he was just taking another stab at the new coaches as to say that we were supposed to be good.
Just makes him look that good.
I would bet his stab was aimed more at the administration...fairly if you ask me.
That is countrier than a biscuit. - Garth Brooks
Or maybe it's just a stab at the people who welched on over $2,000,000 in money due him
If somebody stole $2,000,000 from you what would your reaction be whan asked about them?
If he has a problem with those people speak to them...not my alma mater....
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
At present they are your alma mater
When I was a kid Richard Nixon was my president. This too shall pass.
No, they are not
No individual defines the school, no individual defines the USA…Nixon was only a president.
There have been too many people who have done good things, great things that define those institutions…one or two or a handful did not define—the whole of them acting together define.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
They are my alma mater too and it's okay with me if he speaks to them! :-)

USAFRaider stay safe my friend and it looks like the your pic above is in Lubbock. I think Eric Stephens said it all in that 3 and out will wear out a defense. I do think Sheffield gets the opportunity to start against Missouri. I think these coaches need a win and need it badly especially a home win. “Played their hearts out”…well I call bullshit on that. Lets not keep patting players on the back for losing. This isn’t my 5 year olds soccer team here. Tuberville needs to start toughening up and demanding more of his players and coaches or we’ll continue to decline. This team needs leadership and accountability badly.

Both Quarterbacks will Play
Ill Bet Potts starts but they know what sticks brings and will put him in first sign of our offense struggling. i don’t have a problem with that.
But if Potts plays a game like Baylor that’s good too.
Thanks for serving our Country
USAFRaider and Mojavereject stay safe, God Bless and here’s hoping you get home soon to your family and Raider Nation.
If the defense doesn’t show up on Saturday, it won’t matter who our QB is.

I want Tommy Tuberville to succeed...
I want him to be able to talk about championships and for it to be a meaningful or reasonable discussion…
But when he says “… It’s not any different offense. It’s just we’ve tried to get the best out of some of the players, like our running backs, we possibly can…”,
he’s either:
- just trying to make up excuses (and not doing a very good job at it)…
- flat out lying to us (and thinking we’re stupid enough to believe it)… or
- so ignorant about our offense that he really thinks what he’s saying is true…
I’m not really sure which one I hope it is…
"Transition is hard." - TT
I'm afraid it's #3
He doesn’t seem to understand a thing about what a spread offense is and how it works beyond being able to pronounce the words “spread offense”. All the rest is Greek to him. Hence the endless bemoaning the lack of a running game.
That would actually be pretty funny if it wasn't so sad.

I am wondering why USAFRaider is in a photo with guns…Air Force has bombs’n rockets.

Out of harm's way
Thoughts and prayers for USAFRaider and mojavereject for staying out of harm’s way and for a safe return home.
Let’s hope you get some stress relief this Saturday with Tech upsetting Mizzou or at least having an exciting game.
I think they should give Sheffield a chance but I also don’t place all of the loses on Pott’s shoulders.
The QB position is a very visible spot but there are so many areas we have issues with. Lack of depth, injuries, failed executions, fumbles, dropped passes, time management, etc.
NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
I'll be glad when I don't have to look at or hear from Taylor Potts ever again.
Every time I see him at a press conference spouting his BS it makes me want to vomit….on that note, Wreck’em Tech!

May sound a little familiar, but then they were 25-2 the two previous years. Biggest difference seems to be that they didn’t go through a screwy coaching change trying to beat the predecessor out of his due money.
" Brown said yesterday. “And the hardest thing is, fixing things is simple to the public eye and the media because everybody just wants somebody fired. Everybody wants players taken off the team immediately. They want people ripped in public. They want coaches by name ripped in public.”They want you to make them feel better, and none of those thing help you win. In fact, it hurts your staff and hurts your team."
Mike Leach is dead to me.
Neal Brown, I'm not sure where you are going to coach football & not have some sort of public commenting on your work
Maybe you can coach football in Indiana or Kentucky where the fan base is all about basketball & your team is an afterthought. If nobody is gathering together & talking about your team nobody is criticising you by name. Face it, you are a public figure now. Ever hear of the great Supreme Court libel case The New York Times vs Sullivan? The one that gave us the standard of “actual malice” before a public figure can sue for libel? Do you know who Sullivan was? He was a football coach in Georgia. And he lost in the Supreme Court. You are in a business subject to public & media criticism. If you move up in the ranks, it will only get harder.
I thought that was a "Mack" Brown comment???

great read
I really think the conference is changing and some of the blue chip players UT may have aren’t all of what they’re cracked up to be. A team like UT should have the best RB’s and I just don’t see that in Austin. Teams like Baylor and Iowa State have lesser players but great coaching and that will elevate those schools much like Tech in previous years. I like seeing stories like this because recruits might see value in looking at other schools for greater individual opportunities.

curious
UT has the number one recruiting class coming into next year.
I wonder how their losing season will affect that.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
My guess - marginally at best
They played for the national championship more than once in the past 10 years. That should put visions in 18 year old heads. A lot of NFL guys come through there. What do you think?
I am not so sure that your class will be hurt that much by the bad year. They are buying the future and coach relationships. Go 2 or 3 bad years and huge impact.
They are having the year Oklahoma had last year & nobody in Oklahoma remembers it today
UT will be fine. Now if they fire Mack Brown & blow the place up all bets are off.
How many freshman start and contribute their first year
That is why we are now rebuilding. The 2011 recruits won’t play until 2012.
