Synopsis of the Game | If you can tell me what Texas Tech offense is going to show up then I can tell you who wins this game.  I don't think the Texas Tech defense is going to surprise us for a second game this season (I'd love to be wrong) so I think this game is about whether or not Texas Tech can out-score Houston.  Good and consistent Taylor Potts needs to make an appearance and the offensive line needs to establish themselves early and often, whether it's passing or drive-blocking.  This Houston defense is giving up a ton of yards.  Houston hasn't been terribly consistent recently and playing at home makes a difference.  The line has Houston currently getting 9  and originally started at Houston getting 10.

Offensive MVP | LG Lonnie Edwards

Defensive MVP | CB LaRon Moore

Boy, what a difference a week make. I think last week this time something like 15% predicted a Weber State win – which was foolish and out of spite, not reality.

by Tech92 on Nov 26, 2010 8:04 AM CST reply actions

Now, now Tech92

What you call spite, in reality is fear for many of us. And 15%, is that really something to get upset about?

C’mon it’s Thanksgiving weekend – so many things to be thankful for! In the college football world at the top of my list is that UT is not bowl eligible – woo hoo!! And they are in sole posession of last place in the Big 12 South!!

I hope we win but.....

I honestly believe which Tech offense shows up, depends solely on which Tech defense shows up. If the D is playing ok and we look like we can get some stops then I believe that TT and NB will try to open up the playbook yet again this week, meaning we will not seize up into our 2 draws one pass type of offense. If the D is getting lit up, and that might be a better possibility this week, then I predict we once again retreat into our “slow the game down, and try to grind it out mode” that so many of us have loved this season. If that happens, then it will be hard to get out with a win to end the regular season…

Either way, I hope the kids play hard and do their best to overcome whatever obstacles are placed in front of them tomorrow….hopefully play calling will not be one of them.

Tech wins, but not convincingly...

Tech’s defensive personnel just isn’t what it used to be. I think these games are valuable experience for our young and banged up secondary, but UH will not have too much of an issue moving it against us.

I’m excited for next season, and a strong finish to this season. I would love to see Potts go out with a bang over his last couple of games. He’s a fellow Abilenian, and I do wish him well. I think we’ll begin to see this young defense turn the corner next year, it’ll be interesting to watch.

Also, it’s black friday. Anybody else about to go out in these frigid temperatures for those sales? The family is dragging me into this, I hope I can keep my sanity!

Not Much Enthusiasm

Demonstrated on the board today. I’m looking forward to the game on Saturday. I still hold a grudge for Houston costing Texas Tech a SWC championship in 1976, my freshman year. I want Tech to blast the Cougs back to Houston and cost them bowl eligibility. As a small aside, that will also guarantee UTEP a bowl game.

I’m driving up Saturday to watch the game live. I assume the attendance will be less than sterling. Tech needs this win badly. 7-5 is much better than 6-6. 8-5 is better still. Tech needs to finish strong, have a good recruiting year, and generate some excitement during spring practice. Finishimg on top of UH and UT this year isn’t a championship, but it isn’t terrible.

UT in last place is terrible. Que lastima Horns. Tech needs to generate some excitement for the program and take advantage of every opportunity which presents itself. Guns up!

I predict we will try to control the game by grinding it out on the ground...

We’ll try to keep the ball away from their offense the way teams used to try to do to us…
(And we rest or “help” our defense at the same time…)
It’s all going to come down to whether we can convert the 3rd downs… lots of them…
Pray that our defense gets some take-aways…
(Grinding it out on the ground = 50% or more running plays on offense…)
There will still be lots of scoring…lots of big plays on defensive breakdowns for both teams…
Tech wins what many of us will consider a sloppy or ugly win… but a win is a win is a win…
Go Raiders!

Hat tip to SMU (7-5) for a berth in the Conf USA championship game with their win over East Carolina (6-6) today, 45-38 in OT.

They wouldn’t make an AQ conf championship game by any stretch, but kudos to what June Jones has been able to do on the Hilltop in a very short amount of time. Bowl eligible two years in a row for the first time since the 80s.

That win for us looks fairly respectable at this point…I think…probably…for the most part…I think…

Lol- "I think…probably…for the most part…I think…" I believe I picked up on the inside ball here"

My sentiments as well about the SMU program. And yes that win against the Mustangs is a good notch on our post this year.

by Raiderit on Nov 28, 2010 8:59 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

How the mighty have fallen!

Counting a win against SMU as being “meaningful” is so telling! TTU has fallen, and wins against SMU, Weber St., U of H (without Case Keenum) to help us towards a Bowl, well, says more about the desperation of the Tech football program than we care to believe.

In a down year in the Big 12, Tech is down further than ever. So, what’s changed? The coaching. That’s what. But, on DTN, we aren’t allowed to be negative.

I’ve commented that your continuous negative comments are a complete beating and you sound like a broken record. It’s a tired bit. No matter what, your comments are negative and I don’t believe that you know how to be intellectually honest.

My comments may sound like a broken record, but who’s right? You or me? We often take different positions, but because my opinions are contrary to yours, I become a tired bit and cannot be intellectually honest?

I could begin with my own diatribe about being intellectualy honest, but candidly, it’s not worth the effort or time.

Yes, even when TTU wins by 6 touchdowns, this is your first comment:

A Signature Win

A Signature win for Tech over perennial powerhouse Weber State! This amazing win will catapult Tech deep into the Top 100 rankings, and assure Tech of its 11th bowl game. – somewhere in a 3rd tier city and Bowl. Wow! We did it!

by Seth C on Nov 27, 2010 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

Huh?

So what does that have to do with your prior comment accusing me of being intellectually dishonest? Prove your point. You can’t! And as founder of DTN, and as managing editor, you should be held to a higher standard. Yet you stoop low because you can’t stand others being critical of Tech.

If you want to accuse me of being critical and negative – you are right. If you want to say it’s a “tired bit”, that’s your right. “Broken record” – right again.

“Intellectually dishonest”? You lost all credibility. It seems you misspoke, or simply don’t understand.

I have said all along that Tech 2010 is not nearly as good as Tech 2009. Check any stat, check the W’s and the L’s, check whatever you like – you’ll never be able to convince me, or anyone else, that we are a better team. The offense, defense and special teams are far worse this year than last. That’s not my opinion – its fact. Indisputable fact.

“New coaches”, “poor returning talent”, “new system”, “young players”, blah, blah, blah. Those are your excuses and reasons for Tech this season. Leach had to deal with those elements, just as most coaches do.

I’m pleased Tech is bowl eligible for the 18th straight year, pleased they finished with a winning record, and pleased we could win 8 games this year after a bowl game victory. But I think Tech took a step down this year from last year, and the past few seasons.

I was sarcastic about Tech beating Weber State – an FCS school – to gain bowl eligibility this year.

If you want to continue your daily editorials with the “glass being half full”, that’s your right. But I too can express my opinion – even if it’s different than yours – and that does not make me wrong, nor does it make me intellectually dishonest.

I’m still a fan, but one who expects more of Tech. And expect more of you.

Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!

It means that you even with a huge win, you complain and are condescending to the team. There was little to complain about, but you found a way, just like you find a way to complain about everything. And when you open up by saying that you’re not allowed to speak your mind on DTN, I’m the only person that ultimate say on who stays or who gets banned and when you infer that you’re not allowed to say what you want, then it gives the impression that you’re talking about me and I think I give everyone a pretty long leash.

And I wrote that you can’t be intellectually honest because the very first thing that you write is negative. To be even-handed, i.e. the offense was really sharp, but the defense continued to give up a lot of yards, although it was 3rd and 4th string players, seems to be lost on you.

Go Raiders . . .

"YOU" are not DTN.

Seth – you are sorely mistaken. The fans are DTN, not you. Believe it or not, I was not referring to you at all. I was referring to that part of the fan base that is critical of anyone who is critical of Tech. I’ve received my fair share of negative comments because I’ve been critical. And I understand that. I can take the heat.

If you want to rail against my criticism, I’m fine with that too. Just don’t state I can’t be “intellectually honest”. Because one is critical does not mean they are not “intellectually honest”. I could accuse you of the same thing for making excuse after excuse about Tech, but I don’t.

Everything I’ve stated is supported by fact. No meaningful statistic in 2010 is better than 2009. While we’ve kept the 3rd longest active bowl eligibility streak alive this year, it was a disappointing year, and there’s nothing in your “glass half full” mentality that will change that.

I don’t expect you to agree with me, but don’t expect me to agree with you when you give Tech a pass week after week. I’m tired of Tech being a mediocre school, and until we challenge everyone – Administration, B.O.R., coaches, players and alumni, we’ll never take the next step.

I’m sophisticated enough to understand the game of football, and have been a longtime follower of Tech. Yes, we played 3rd and 4th string players against Weber State, but we beat up an FCS school to gain bowl eligibility. And while the Tech players and coaches could do nothing about the schedule, I was being sarcastic about those that reacted as if we had just whipped OU.

I’ll agree to tone down my criticism if you agree to be less of a homer.

When the game was played, the win vs SMU was meaningful.

And every blow game that we have played as been realized because our eligibility included wins against a pretty soft early schedule…just as it does for every eligible school.

So in that regard, what is different ?

+1. I think our attitude and swagger have been missing since 2008. Its like were afraid to play all out or to get nasty with a bigger/better team. We had that from 02-08 but it seems like the 09 team and this years team don’t have that chip on their shoulder to prove that we belong.

The coaches are partially to blame, but most of it goes to the players. They need some leaders to step up.

Not negative on DTN?

I get to be negative on DTN anytime I want to! It’s just that you can’t make personal attacks on other posters on this site (a policy I support), but as far as attacking the coaching staff, administration—man, I feel free to let it fly. If you want to have someone dogging you for not being a faithful, unquestioning Tubs supporters, log on to the other major Tech fan site (you know which one) and see how quickly the pro-Tubs and pro-Hance people fly out of the woodwork and call you a commie, UT sympathisizer, etc, and start a bunch of juvenile neo-junior high weenie-waving attacks on your manhood. One really can’t make any intelligent comments over there without a lot of repulsive personal attacks—that’s why I post over here. DTN doesn’t put up with that juvenile BS!

Improved performance

I predict an improved performance on offense, defense and special teams. I see (as i look into the crystal ball) nothing spectacular on offense but less “3 and outs” and more 7 – 10 play drives. Defensively, better stops against the run. Particularly, better defense against draws. Tech will give up some underneath passes due to a large cushion but will not give up the big play.

UH 24
OMVP = Potts
DMVP = Porter

No right to negativity???? PLEEEAAAASE. Not so much on this thread of predictions, but just check history. Better yet, give a small dose of credit to this year’s coaching staff. Make sure you duck.
