MVPs 2010

Now that the regualr season is over and we have put up the white helmets for the year, I would like to pay homage to a couple of seniors that have worked their asses off, played hard, and played very well all four years they were allowed on the field.  On defense, a giant hat tip to Colby Whitlock.  Colby has anchored a defense riddled with injory and full of less experienced players.  He kept his head up and his butt down and just worked to get his job done.  Well done Colby.  My favorite play was his tackle in the ut game to get us a game leading safety.

On offense the MVP of this bunch of seniors has to be Lyle Leong.  With hands like glue, the accrobatic senior made catch after catch.  His knack of getting open, creating separation, elevating at the right moment was a pleasure to watch.  While not he biggest knife in the drawer, his blocking skills improved year after year.  HIs catch in the Alamo Bowl where he seemed to get 6 or 7 feet off the ground was a thing of beauty.

Gonna miss you guys.  God's speed.

Agree on Whitlock. Thought we’d see more out of Duncan this year. He wasn’t terrible, just not as big a factor as I’d hoped.

I give Batch the oMVP this year. I agree Leong was huge…I give Batch the nod maybe out of respect for what he’s done in his career. Best RB we’ve had since Hanspard.

I was expecting a whole lot more out of Batch. With the increased focus on running the ball this season I think he was predicting a 1000 yards rushing. While we are very forunate to have had Baron, T Henderson and Sammy Morris both had more impact on the field. Batch may deserve MVP for helping hold the team together, but not for what he did on the field.

I agree FriscoR...

I think Henderson and Morris were actually better on the field than Batch. I really enjoyed having Batch at Tech and respect him tremedously but I’m not in the club that ranks him so highly.

Henderson v. Batch

Henderson
Career Rushing: 587 Att, 3241 Yds, 5.5 Avg, 50 TD
Career Receiving: 303 rec, 2058 yds, 19 TD
Career Kick Returns: 2 Ret, 27 Yds, 13.5 Avg, 0 TD
Career Scoring: 69 TD, 414 Pts

Batch
Career Rushing: 462 Att, 2490 Yds, 5.4 Avg, 27 TD
Career Receiving: 139 rec, 1105 yds, 5 TD
Career Scoring: 32 TD, 192 Pts

Didn’t realize just how productive Henderson was. Knew he was good, but not that good.

Henderson

I really thought he was the complete package especially in the Leach offense. Kid was tough and made games like the Tech-OU goal line winning TD stick in my mind.

Sammy Morris??

1995 he was a redshirt. In 1996, he rushed for 226 yards in eight games. He did not play again until his senior season in 1999, sitting out his junior year due to NCAA eligibility rules. He was a team captain his senior season, finishing with 562 rushing yards in nine games. (thanks, Wikipedia!)

You really think he was better overall than Batch?

Henderson…he was good…all Big XII.

Sammy had a knack for coming up with the big play just at the right time(see A+M game, I am too old and lazy to look it up, but you should remember). He has done pretty well in the NFL, although not a star.

sure, he was good

and the aTm game was his biggest…but overall? I would take Batch any day, even though that’s not a slam on Morris. At the time, he was a punk who wouldn’t go to class and had to sit out because of it…and it cost Tech. Obviously, he’s matured and is a solid pro. Heck, he’s made over $10 mm in his NFL career (oh, and Joselio Hansen…remember him? He’s made over $8 mm)

Sammy had more heart than anyone....

he was hurt for one of those seasons and didn’t look like he was coming back. A buddy corresponded with him and he is so mentally tough it is freaky. We sat behind Rod Hobbs at the CU game (he lives there in Denver) and he was there with Sammy and it is agreed that he is a Beast. The fake punt at college station with Sammy scampering….wow.

And our Ricky Williams, wow he was great, I can’t believe I forgot him.

Whitlock and Batch are going to be missed

I agree that safety in the south endzone against Texas in 2008 was classic. I am sure someone has a you tube link, I would like to see it again just to fire me up for the bowl game. It was really fun to watch Batch put the hurt on the defense in the open field. I know that it had to be tough on them this year.

But overall, you have to tip your hat to all the seniors. I have not been near as composed as that group has been all year. It would please me nothing more for the seniors to go out with a bowl win. Then, maybe we can start the healing process.

My picks

Offensive MVP – Leong hands down made the best progress this season and probably gets to try out for a few teams at the next level. I would have never guessed Leong at the start of the season.

Defensive MVP – Easy one here Witlock. Surrounded by a bunch of weak sisters he was able to secure the line respectfully.
