Post Game Thoughts | Missouri Tigers 17, Texas Tech Red Raiders 24
Box Score | Post Game Quotes | Post Game Press Conference
THE RESULT | A WIN IS A WIN | I had so low expectations for this game, essentially hinging a win or a loss on whether or not QB Steven Sheffield would play a significant amount of time. I'll get into this a little bit below, but Missouri essentially implemented a similar defense that former Red Raider Graham Harrell struggled against and it stumped Sheffield as well. Potts playing well was a surprise and I was also somewhat surprised by head coach Tommy Tuberville and OC Neal Brown having a relatively short hook with Sheffield, but I thought it was warranted. And honestly, I wouldn't mind Potts having a similar sized leash in that if it's not working out for a quarter and a half, then give the other an opportunity.
There were a lot of good things to talk about with this game and I honestly didn't think that Missouri played even close to their potential. But I'm not taking this one for granted. I thought that Texas Tech was essentially doomed to, at best, a 6-6 record. This is still a real possibility and I there's still a strong chance that if this team doesn't play up to their potential, they could lose their final two games. I think it's going to be tough to get a win next week in Norman, but I can stress about that for the next 6 days. Today, we get a win and I'm happy about that.
Storylines and MVP's after the jump.
THE STORYLINES
WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE | I was almost shocked to see Missouri try the same thing again, the same thing that forced Harrell to throw 4 interceptions in 2007. Missouri had 4 down linemen and had every other defender within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. When Sheffield took off to run, the reason he did so was because there was nothing open in the mid-range of the field. I listened to Friday's episode of Tech Talk and Tuberville talked on Thursday night that they script only about 10 plays, but that they're open to changing those plays depending on the down and distance. A lot of great coordinators, namely Bill Walsh, did this and I see the benefit of knowing that a team has 10 or so plays that they need to run to perfection. I think this is where Sheffield's impatience caused problems in that he didn't take the time to look down the field.
But once Potts got in the game, he was more patient and he give the offense more time to settle down and there were things that were available past those 10 yards. And once Potts found those seams, the running game opened up and there were times yesterday that I thought that if this is the type of offense that we can eventually see then I can live with that. It can potentially beat a team a couple of different ways and has the potential to take advantage of a defense that previously gave this offense fits.
And your weekly quarterback numbers show a more efficient offense with Potts under center. Sheffield had a 4.95 YPA average while Potts was is usual steady self, averaging 6.71 YPA. And I want to make this clear, I'm not giving up on either Potts or Sheffield, or declaring one the winner over the other. I still say that Potts is what he is, and there are times when he may not be the right option, but if the offense isn't giving you anything, then I hope the staff realizes that perhaps both can give this team an opportunity to win.
THAT'S YOUR DEFENSIVE LINE | I didn't have the opportunity to keep track of each play that this was true, but your defensive line for a good part of the game, especially on passing downs, was Colby Whitlock, Brian Duncan and Sam Fehoko. That's it. And they probably played at least 50% of all Missouri snaps with those three along the line, and most often in 2nd and 3rd down plays. Don't get me wrong, both Pearlie Graves and Donald Langley saw plenty of time, but it was really nice to see DC James Willis figure this out during the week, which was that getting pressure on Gabbert may not have been the most important thing, but filling the gaps and floating with Gabbert, with ILB Bront Bird, was the most important thing.
There was nothing special about what Missouri did on their two long touchdown runs except that they blocked those plays exceptionally well and Texas Tech took some awfully poor angles to get those tackles. After that, the Missouri offense struggled.
There's no doubt that Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert struggled to hit much of anything, but this week I thought that the defensive backs did a much better job in coverage. Much better. And so you ask yourself why Gabbert struggled and you could probably say that it's a little bit of Gabbert being off and a little bit of the defense plays good coverage in the middle of the field. It's not fair to give some credit to the Texas Tech defense after playing awful for a good part of the season. This group deserved some credit yesterday. What Texas Tech did on defense is the same thing that the Missouri defense tried to do to Texas Tech offense, which is flood the middle of the field and force everything outside. With Gabbert having trouble hitting the sidelines, it worked to near perfection.
THIS IS WHY ZONE BLOCKING WORKS | I made notes this morning and the one thing that I tried to note was all of the times that the offensive line was zone blocking vs. man blocking. I'll have to check the numbers later, but it was probably 2 zone blocking plays to every 1 man blocking play. And the same reason why Texas Tech does this is the same reason why Missouri could have used this. I thought that the Missouri defensive line wasn't sure what to expect during the game. All of those plays where RB Baron Batch was able to cut back on the offensive line were essentially zone blocking plays and all of those short yardage plays that Aaron Crawford ran were mainly man blocking plays. Being able to do both adds quite a bit of versatility to this team and I firmly believe that had Missouri been able to take advantage of a really small defensive line in Texas Tech, then we might see a different score.
And with Batch, I'm not sure how he was able to rush 28 times for 134 yards for a 4.8 YPC average as he was most likely distracted with all of his off-the-field ventures. After RB Eric Stephens fumbled the ball, again, I think I saw on the film where Tuberville was talking with RB coach Chad Scott and essentially told Scott that Stephens didn't need to be in the game until he could figure out how not to turn the ball over. We saw Stephens take one more carry in the 2nd half, and that was his 2 carries.
And kudos to Aaron Crawford for sticking with it. He was great as a short-yardage back and he also had an 18 yard pickup in the 2nd half that was huge.
RECEIVING TOUCHDOWNS LOOK EASY | On the Lyle Leong's first touchdown, it was something that we've seen so many times this year. A fade to the back of the endzone to finally put some points on the board. We've seen it 1,000 times it seems like and it was beautiful. But that fade, and the fade that Leong constantly runs, set up his second touchdown. On the 10th drive of the game, Leong gave a fake that he was going to run outside, the Missouri defensive back had to bite and did, and Leong stepped into a Potts' pass for an easy 6 points. It was really a thing of beauty, but it was predicated on Leong being so successful at going up and getting a pass that he's done so often. Leong finished the game with 9 catches for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. This team is going to miss Leong next year.
And Detron Lewis' lone touchdown was more about the play call than what Lewis did. With 0:20 left in the first half, Texas Tech had gone down the field relatively quickly, Texas Tech was at the Missouri 8 yard line and was facing 3rd and 4 yards to go. Lewis was on the outside of this formation and goes in motion towards the offensive line and it's painfully obvious that Lewis has man coverage and there's no one going to help with the Missouri defender covering Lewis. The pass was nothing more than a quick out-route and it was an easy touchdown. With Lewis going in motion, Potts knew (I think) that Lewis was going to be all by himself and it was really pretty to watch.
TRICKERY | We saw three trick plays yesterday and really only 1 worked, but it was a big one. The first one was in the 3rd drive, IR Cornelius Douglas goes into motion towards the backfield, receives the hand-off. The entire left side of the offensive line essentially go to the ground on the play, let their defenders get past them, and then get back up to block for what was supposed to be a pass back to Sheffield. Douglas was just short of hitting Sheffield and with three offensive linemen essentially setting up a wall, it looked as if Sheffield would have scored easily.
The second trick play was in the 8th drive, which was Potts first drive and Texas Tech had done a pretty good job of moving the ball down the field. In fact, also in this drive, Detron Lewis had made one of his appearances in the quarterback slot, the line man blocked, Chris Olson was at tight end and a pulling Lonnie Edwards did a good job of creating some space on the left side of the field. Anyway, Texas Tech faced a 4th and 2 at the Missouri 23, and the play that Texas Tech faked was one that they seemingly had run all year, which was hand the ball off and watch the running back run into the right side of the line for no gain. But what happened was that RB Ben McRoy was in the slot on the right side, Potts faked to Stephens and Potts hands off to McRoy to run to the left side of the line. A really beautiful bit of mis-direction where McRoy was able to out-run anyone for the Missouri defense to the sideline for a 9 yard pickup.
Last, but not least was a double-pass as Potts threw the ball to IR Austin Zouzalik and in the middle of the field, without a defender really around him, was Detron Lewis just waiting on the pass. The pass hit Lewis' hands (again, he had to wait on the ball), but it would have been a pretty nice pickup.
Both Douglas and Zouzalik are former quarterbacks and I think it's interesting how OC Brown is trying to utilize some of these talents on his team.
TWO BIG-TIME PASS BREAK-UPS | The game was never really out of Missouri's reach and the last handful of drives had me obsessing over when Missouri would tie the game. Of course, that never happened, but there were two huge pass break-ups in Missouri's final drive. Missouri was at the Texas Tech 33 and was facing 3rd and 7. Gabbert threw into the endzone on 3rd and 4th down and both times you had a Texas Tech defensive back make a play on a pass, a pass that would have been a completion the past few weeks. LaRon Moore broke up a pass intended for Wes Kemp on the 3rd and 7 play, while little Eugene Neboh broke up a hugely important 4th and 7 play. Neboh jumped at just the right time and knocked the ball out of Jerrell Jackson's hands. It was a huge play and if you had to pick one play that was the play of the game, it may be this 4th down play.
OFFENSIVE MVP | RB Baron Batch and QB Taylor Potts | With Batch running and Potts finding holes, I didn't feel like I could leave one or the other off as MVP. Also considered was Leong.
DEFENSIVE MVP | DT Colby Whitlock and ILB Bront Bird | Whitlock was on the field a ton during this game, as was Bird. There may not be a more important player on this team, more so than Whitlock. Bird hasn't had the best year, but he did exactly what he was asked to do yesterday, which was shadow Gabbert and the running back and he did it incredibly well (sans the two long running plays).
SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | RB Gerardo Acevedo | When watching the game I had no idea who Acevedo was, but I kept seeing his number down there for kick and punt coverage, either making a tackle or around the scrum. He was excited to play and he was getting down the field.

I mentioned this in the animated drive chart post:
Post game thoughts are up, and surprise, I think the only reason TTU won the game was being able to run the ball so effectively from the 2nd quarter and on. And the icing on the cake was that last drive, where TTU ate up 3:57 of clock (I was watching the game with a handful of friends, yes I have friends, and said that someone would complain that we ran the ball too much), the offensive line mauled, Batch looked great, and Potts kept another zone-read play for the last first down of the game.
I should have mentioned this in this PGT, but I’ve got to go work outside as my wife wants me to paint today. And the picture for the story, is Neboh’s pass-break-up on 4th and 7 the play of the game. I thought that was a great play.

Scratch that...Offensive MVP: Freedom, Defensive MVP: Freedom, Special Teams MVP: Freedom
Freedom played a hell of a game tonight, He was all over the place!!!!
I found the chants bit perplexing.....
I mean, Missouri’s not exactly a charter member of the Soviet Bloc.
I thought is was pretty special also...
that the crowd could rise above the game to cheer for the guys who fight the real wars.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Detron seems to have a lot more drops this year than previous years.
I was so proud of Potts…I guess playing with a chip on your shoulder pays off sometimes.
I would love to see Zouzalik get more touches (passes included)
I really hate that Stephens can’t seem to hold on to the ball.
I thought the biggest play of the game was the trick play on 4th to McRabbit. HUGE!
Wreck’em…lets do it again next week.
Tommy Tuberville can bite my shiny metal ass!!!
I know they had camo on them, but did anyone else notice how awesome it was to have the all black uniforms again? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Tech played awesome in their all black, at night, in the Jones. Hopefully Tubs will realize the benefit of the all black uni’s for future night games.
All the makings of a typical Red Raider season
One huge upset on national tv (Missouri)
One bad loss (Texas)
Now only if we can beat Houston in the final game, we can cap a typical Tech season and go to a bowl game (beating OU in Norman looks impossible at the moment but stranger things have happened).
You are not that far off the mark…if Tech gets dropped by OU, beats UH, beats Weber, wins a bowl game…well, there’s your fairly normal 8 win Tech season. More of a roller coaster this year, no doubt. But in the end, does it matter if we yo yo to 8 (or 9) wins every year? With that, the end result will be darn near the same with only the cast of characters being different. The recruits won’t bail en masse and we will be optimistic heading in to 2011. Dare I say Typical Tech – but without the malice?
The problem with this thought process
Is that 2007, 2008, and 2009 saw 9, 11, and 9 wins that could have been more. Same thing with 2005 and 2003. There is a big difference between saying we are lucky to get 8 wins with a bowl, and "man if we just caught that ball and made that one sack we would have 10 wins. This year has been disappointing b/c we have needed every bit of luck we can get to just get to 7 regular season wins.
How many seasons couldn't have been more
unless you go undefeated? Even then you might have gotten cheated out of a NC game because others were undefeated or BCS. The 2008 season was great and could have been greater, but it could have been worse. Crab makes an awesome play at end of game or we lose to ut. Need I mention the interception that ut should have caught just before it. Harrell says “tape me up” at half and plays lights out or we lose to Baylor in 2008. Seems to me that there was another close one or maybe two where we escaped and won.
These guys have struggled with more serious injuries than previous teams that I recall. There may be some “crow” needing to be eaten if a bowl trip yields an 8 win season, but will anyone acknowledge the hard work with the see-saw season or just attribute it to “luck”?
Our defense bailed us out of an early game that year (2008) against Nevada. The offense stunk that game but the defense kept nevada off the field.

Funny how when we win a game we tend to forget the lucky breaks that got us there, but when we lose it’s always, “if only…”
In any game decided by 7 points or less, 1 play could have been the difference between a win and a loss. I often wonder if we “deserve” as much as our rose colored glasses would tell us.
Seth, good analysis (as always)
I have to confess that I went on to other things after both the offense and defense looked so inept in the first quarter. Fortunately, I had the DVR running. I was pleasantly shocked when I checked back in at the end of the 3rd quarter to see how bad the score had become. Enjoyed watching how well the team rallied and pulled it all together this morning.
As to the QB situation, I think Coach Tuberville clearly stated the reason for the change last night and perhaps the reason for previously choosing Potts as the starter.
"He was taking half the field out (of consideration) and running to the sideline. He was taking a couple of receivers out of the play, so we felt like we knew Potts would stay in there and stay in the pocket, because he’s done it all year long."
there were times yesterday that I thought that if this is the type of offense that we can eventually see then I can live with that.
I had a similar thought.
Kudos to Neboh, I see why he is one the field other than being forced by injuries…he has passed some guys on his way to playing time.
O.K., I have been listening to Coach Tuberville’s press quotes long enough to venture an opinion. He does not call O plays, he does not call D plays, he may ask his cordinator what was that after the fact, or he may say, we have had enough of Stephens (or some other player) for this game. Other than that I think he is giving answers to reporter’s questions based on how he sees football rather than how his cordinator sees football…and it looks really funny to me.
On the road next week vs an interesting opponent, I am very surprised that TAMU took it to OU so strongly…and have an uncontrolable urge to chuckle of the latest from the program down at the lower 40…..
There is an upside to those two games, the unending stream of arrogant comments on facebook from hornies has been replaced by an equally boring stream of whoooops…you know like I say when I drop my ice cream cone or something…
Regarding Acevedo, I think he has been playing well on kick/punt teams for a couple of years…one of those unhearlded guys who has found a niche.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Acevedo
I agree that Acevedo has been a great addition to the special teams. However, he does need to learn not to collect penalties along the way. If I recall correctly, he hurt us a couple of times last night with bad penalties. Otherwise, he has been around the ball nearly every time when he is on the field. His blocking on offense has helped in spots also.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Offense
I think some have mentioned the difference in play-calling when Sticks was on the field as opposed to when Potts entered. But the bottom line is that the change was a positive and it could be that it will work the other way, with Sticks replacing Potts, sometimes. They play a little differently and if a defense gets into a mode of covering for a particular QB, a change can really mess them up, allowing the offense to excel, at least for a while, just like last night.
Also, the idea of getting a bit more conservative going into the fourth quarter can be a negative, causing the team to lose any momentum gained. It did not cause a loss this time, but it could in another game. That would be on the OC. The defense seemed to play the last two quarters with a lot more energy than during the first two quarters, since they did not let the running game continue to surprise them.
Overall, good changes made on two sides of the ball that overcame the poor third side (special? teams). Again, it was enough for this game because Gabbert was obviously off target, but Tech can’t let anything go without adjusting as needed when they play OU in Norman. To see them win there would be wonderful. It would also mean Tuberville was able to reverse terrible losses to UT in Lubbock, OSU in Lubbock, ISU anywhere, and A&M anywhere with great wins against three teams and/or in places the Captain had difficulty in getting wins-CU in Boulder, UM anywhere, and OU in Norman. If he can pull it off, then the season will not be such a wash as we have all thought it would be.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
And with Batch, I’m not sure how he was able to rush 28 times for 134 yards for a 4.8 YPC average as he was most likely distracted with all of his off-the-field ventures.
Your sarcasm stings deep to the core. I’m glad Batch was able to shut up and take command of the run game. I’m glad he proved me wrong, I’m eating some tasty crow right now. Now if only he can finish strong this season and be a key factor for an upset win at Oklahoma, it will be a sweet memory to his senior year and to all Tech fans and alum.
+1

Batch has Heart.
Batch has heart, and I’m glad he has those off-field “distractions”. He’s an inspiration to many, and candidly, if Tech ran the same offense as last year, perhaps he’d be more of a key component. He showed heart with his strong and determined runs – all with bum shoulders.
If all of Tech had his heart, well, perhaps we’d have a W or two more.
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
He had his second best career rushing game last night
how could be more a part of the offense?
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Yes, he did. Your point?
In 2009, Batch was #7 in total rushing with 884 yards, 5.3 yards/carry, and 14 TD’s. He was #12 in Receiving with 395 yards and 1 TD, and #12 overall in Total Offense with 1,279 yards and 15 TD’s.
In 2010, Batch is #9 in total rushing with 499 yards, 4.7 yards/carry and 2 TD’s. He’s not ranked in the Top 12 for Receiving or Total Offense.
My point, is that neither Tech nor Batch are designed for smashmouth football as it relates to the running game. Batch, in my opinion, would have more rushing and receiving yards – therefore more total offense, if Tech ran a more vertical passing offense such as the Air Raid.
I guess you did not “dress good” tonight.
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
Wait until next week for this one
If he puts up 100+ rushing again that would show that it took time to adjust to the new scheme. I think we all accept that our offense would have been better all year had Leach not been fired, and most of us expected a bit of a drop off. I’m still not sold on the new coaching staff, however, I am holding off on judgement for one more game now.
If we can get to 10 wins next year...
…I don;t care if they run 50 times a game. I just want to be a serious contender, and be more than an also ran" in the BCS Rankings at the end of the year. Let’s just win!
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
I agree with "just win!"
However, I don’t see 10 wins happening next year regardless of who is coaching. Too young.
Like his blog
Every time I read his column in the AJ, I chuckle about his comment on the chicken bones piling up in the trash after a Wingstop run. I’ll have to celebrate all future wins and any of Baron’s good plays with some of my own trips for chicken wings, etc. Mmmmmm, there’s nothing like the “Miracle of the Golden Bird!”
Amazing, amazing ambassador
Agreed, Batch is an amazing, amazing commentator, public relations specialist, mentor, writer, reporter, guru, yogi, and ambassador for the university.
I’m sure that Batch isn’t the only one with off-the-field stuff, Batch just may be the most out-there. I hope that he, and his teammates are visiting kids in the hospital or visiting classrooms or volunteering their time. They’re mostly well thought of in the community and I’d hate to discourage that. I don’t know that Batch and this team will be able to beat OU in Norman. That’s a really tough task (I went to the game in 2008 and it was the craziest place I’ve ever been to in my life), but I’d love to have it.

Why on earth would you give Bird credit for anything in this game if you watched it? He was awful, absolutely awful. He still hasn’t adjusted to MLB in that he can’t shake blocks worth a darn.

I have to agree...
Yes Bird was all over the place, but it was because he was chasing after missed tackles, or receivers and backs he was too slow to cover. He has looked slow all year, and rarely squares up for a proper tackle, and instead relies on weak arm tackling. I know he is a good kid, with lots of heart, but frankly he was slow and weak last year, and I don’t see much if any improvement.

Replying to you and RdrPwr, but but I think this is what Bird was asked to do for this game. There’s no doubt that he can’t keep certain plays in front of him, and he wasn’t perfect by any means, but he was essentially asked to float each and every play. Take away those 2 huge running plays and the TTU defense limited MU to 215 yards. Not perfect, but I thought he did a good job of what he was asked to do.

I just get tired of seeing him get blocked 10 yards downfield before he gets loose,
then fall on the pile and get credited for the tackle. I’d say hats off to our Corners on this one.
Agreed - Bront is for the Birds.
Bront seems so confused. He runs the field but has no idea where he should be. He is nowhere near the player he was last year. He has not seemed to pick-up the D yet. Lost is more like it.

Hat in hand
Sheffield did not generate the energy that I thought he would. I made the point that the intangibles Sheffield would bring to the game would ignite the whole team. Actually it was Potts that brought the spark. Three fabulous drives. Kudos to the defense as well. The “harmony” between the offense and defense seemed to really help.
One final note. Potts came apart after the three drives. Right after a pick, then a sack and a couple of hits. His confidence was gone and the passing game disappeared. It undoes him every time. Thankfully Batch really stepped up.
From the bleachers
It was nice to see most of the fans stick around for the whole game for a change. The TD before the half kept them interested I guess.
Best comment I heard…after seeing the UT final score this guy said “there’s gonna be a special at walmart, buy a longhorn shirt and get a free ticket to the game.”
Also, I don’t mean to get on a soap box but if you’re a young man riding a crowded bus to the west commuter lot after the game and an elderly person or female gets on after you give them your seat!
Thanks, I needed to get that off my chest. It was great to get a W and see the team bounce back after the two long runs by mizzou. I’m having crow sticks for dinner tonight.

I heard the commentators say that adam james has the best hands on the team as he caught his one pass. Is there any truth to that statement? Im not trying to start any rants. I just haven’t been able to see many games where I live, and his stats don’t accurately reflect the statements made.
His boyfriend might
be the only one that could corroborate that….that was his first catch in forever.

ha!
Pretty sure if he had the best hands on the team he would have a lot more catches to his name. I could outplay him tomorrow if I was asked to, and thats not me being conceited, thats me just recognizing a complete lack of talent.
Did he get booed...thought I heard

Oh lord yes.
Everytime the ball went near him I heard a lot of booing besides my own. And everytime he stepped on the field (which was way too much to be such a talentless, little, asshat, queer, insert other insults here, F-er) I heard a lot of people hurling obscenities in his direction.
Wrong.
The comment was that if he was not interfered with, he has great hands and may have caught the ball. Who really cares about Nancy James anyway.
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
Guess you weren't catching the sarcasm in my statement!!!
It’s hard to get that across when typed. But they did in fact infer that he had the best hands on the team.
no...actually the annoucer is friends with cunt jmes so he decided to thrown in some of his own made up commentary to fill in for some actual researched commentary
If he had the best hands on the team wouldn't he be a starter?

I think he saw his white legs and confused him for Torres.

I think that Daddy James
made that claim of ‘best hands’ for baby James when Craig was commenting on Tech games. It certainly isn’t true when Crabtree or Torres is around, maybe had some merit when Edward Britton was dropping passes regularly.
Great Analysis Seth.
My daughter came home for the weekend, so I didn’t make the trip to Lubbock. Got home from work (where Iwas listening on the radio) at the end of the first quarter and watched the remainder of the game on TV (my wife went to a different room to watch because she got tired of my screaming).
Great win for the program and absolutely necessary. This game should seal the deal on recruiting for those kids who have already committed. The game looked great on TV, and from talking to my friends who attended live, the stadium was electric.
Before this game, I felt Tech would play well and in the prediction box I said Tech would win by more than three. There are too many good players at Tech who have to be sick and tired of all the criticism from Tech’s fans. The players still think they are winners and they are sick of Leach or any coaching staff getting more credit than they (the players) do for winning the games. I know from my playing experience that I always thought the players won the games and the coaches usually were not a big factor (except in some losses when they did stupid things to cost the team losses).
The playcalling finally looked “on”. The execution prevented some plays from succeeding (the Lewis drop on the double pass and the Potts interception when a field goal would have been huge come to mind ). Great running game and way to dominate the ToP. Only major criticism is the inability of Tech’s special teams to catch the friggin" punts! What the H*** is the matter with Lewis and/or the coaching staff? Don’t they get it? Every team is going to keep rugby kicking if Tech refuses to catch those balls. I’m sick of the sixty yard punts. Forget runbacks! Catch the f***ing ball!
The season of up is down and down is up continues next week in Norman. Tech never wins there: therefore, Texas Tech wins in Norman next week! I still believe in our Red Raaiders! Guns up and great win!
The rollercoaster ride that has been this season finally got fun last night!
Was glad to see Stick(s) start, too bad he didn’t play better. Was thrilled to see Nick Freedom play the way he did. Definitely see the advantage to playing both QBs.
Liked the trick plays. Let’s keep trying them.
D was best I’ve seen from them all year – way to go!
Willing to give credit to the coaching staff but I’m still not on the Tubs bandwagon. Still have concerns about clock management. When you’re only up by a touchdown, keep moving the ball. That is a dangerous game to play and if Missouri had been playing better we could have lost that 7pt lead in a hurry at the end.
Plus, while last night was a GREAT game for us, until there is some consistency it will be hard to relax and enjoy. Yes, I’m aware that I probably take football way too seriously! :-) But I can’t help it – I LOVE my Red Raiders!
Batch did a great job as did Crawford.
SO excited to see the players fired up! Also glad to finally see some emotion from Tubs.
I hope we’ve turned a corner here and at the very least win one more game so our seniors can end their college careers by playing in a bowl.

I have to agree with you I’m not sold on Tubs either, but I was listening to Phil Steele on 790am in Houston and he made a great point. It is hard to be the guy who replaces a great guy. Steele said that Tubs has his faults and that they are only highlighted even more being the guy who is trying to replace Leach. I am giving him credit for this win. Now he has to do what the other guy did and harness the energy that comes after “the win we shouldn’t have gotten”. Leach did that well by taking the momentum from an unexpected win to the next week. Let’s hope we can use some of what the ags did in exposing OU.

I will slightly disagree…Tech had a big tendency to lay an egg after a big win. We typically played better as an underdog or with something to prove. Not always, but that is the memory I have of this type of big victory. The next big game often ate us up.
Ended 05 with a win against OU, lost Cotton Bowl
Last year killed Neb on the road, got killed by a bad aTm the next week at home
Not always the case by any means, but that’s sort of how it seemed to go a lot of times.
Counter argument would be Ok St after UT in '08 though.
I’d say its just a mute point from either side.
pr, didn't get to see or hear game last nite,
so in a nutshell, what was wrong with sticks?
"uh, uh, well, uh yeah, I think the guys, uh played, uh pretty well in the second
half." The captains words, after uh, the insight bowl. You're the best Mike!
Eh... lots of things.
He seemed very “antsy” in the pocket. He looked like he was just in a huge hurry for the most part. Now part of this could have been due to the fact that the D had everyone up close, and nearly every play call had nothing but short routes. In our 3 TD drives we aired the ball out a bit more to stretch out the D. Potts did look much more comfortable in the pocket, but had about the same results as Sticks other than those 3 scoring drives. I wonder when our staff will see that us being able to actually air out the ball 10-15+ yards per pass enables to score.
so hats off to the D I guess.

Yeah
Mizzou had over 150 yards rushing and two rushing TD’s in the first quarter alone. I would love to hear what Coach Willis said to them to get them fired up after that. I have a feeling Tuberville wouldn’t approve of such language.
I'm thinking it was something along the lines of...
golly gee boys, those fellas from missouri sure are playing tough. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, we’ve got ourselves in one heck of a mess. But I believe in each and every one of you. Now go out there and win one for the Tubs!

I think if he is referring to himself, "Catfish Jesus" has more charisma. Good call.

have to say that Detron an Leong had Monster Games. they both made up for the loss of Torres and Franks. I thought Detron did very well in the wildcat and in punt returns.
I just hope we see our Defense keep up whatever it is they were doing. Well At least for one more week. I don’t expect Potts to perform the way he did every game but at least the D can help out a little bit so we aren’t behind 2 or 3 touchdown like usual.

Great Game Analysis but..........
Donald Langley started at DE and play well. Donald has been a solid player all season, maybe not great, but OK. He certainly is earning his ship.
Zone blocking or man blocking, we don’t have a good OL this year. Our O worked when Potts made Quick throws. Sticks couldn’t get in a rythym and Potts got nailed every time he tried to let a play develop.
Our WR did a better job of getting open, possibly because the RBs did a better job running the ball. Lyle Leong makes catching TDs look easy.
Tech has created a new defense...
Tampa Bay invented the “Tampa 2” defense, but Tech has created the “Raider 8-er” defense. Three “spies” on the line looking for anything out of the backfield with eight LBs/DBs in coverage. Creating ABSOLUTELY NO physical pressure on the QB apparently creates significant mental pressure. Genius! Gabbert played like a drunken sailor all night…or maybe he actually was drunk. Either way, we win!

That is our silent sack defense….
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
oh almost like the silent scare!!
haha i jk i thought the defense did great. if it works, i’ll take it.
