Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe | Recruiting Update and Red Raiders to Face Huskies

Set your DVR's:   That's right, Pony Excess, ESPN's 30 on 30 documentary on the pay-for-play scandal at SMU.  You can watch the trailer here:

"Pony Excess" - ESPN 30 for 30 Trailer (SMU Football, NCAA Death Penalty) (via StoneyCrookRecords)

Whitlock, Okafor, Stephens and Leong Named to AP All-Big 12:  Congrats to DT Colby Whitlock for being named the AP's All-Big 12 first team (the Big 12 head coaches had 3 defensive ends on the defensive line rather than 2 defensive tackles and 2 defensive ends).  Congrats are also in order for RT Mickey Okafor, WR Lyle Leong and KR Eric Stephens being named to the second team.  LG Lonnie Edwards, LB Bront Bird and LB Brian Duncan were named honorable mention.

Seeing Okafor on the second team is a bit of a surprise, but Leong and Stephens on the second team isn't a surprise to me at all.  Congrats to all of these players.

Recruiting Update:  Other than the bowl game, the next big football event is National Signing Day and ESPN's Jamie Newberg takes a look at all of the Big 12 teams.  Newberg says that currently, Texas Tech has one of the best classes in the conference, and those of you who are curious as to what's next, here's Newberg:

What's next: With 21 commitments already on board, there's not much left to do. Texas Tech is among the leaders for linebacker Ramik Wilson (Tampa, Fla./Jefferson). While the Red Raiders likely trail Auburn for ESPNU 150 tight end Brandon Fulse (Fort Meade, Fla./Fort Meade), they will get an official visit from him on Dec. 12. They are also in the hunt for cornerback Devin Gaulden (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./University School) and defensive end Branden Jackson (McKeesport, Pa.) took an official visit to Texas Tech earlier this fall. They are also in the mix for in-state defensive linemen Roy Robertson (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie), Horace Arkadie (Irving, Texas/Irving), Brandon Alexander (Brenham, Texas/Brenham) and Isiah Norton (Dallas, Texas/Kimball). All have been offered by the Red Raiders.

This looks like a pretty good list of players to possibly follow as potential commits.  I'd expect that Texas Tech signs 25 players, even though the class appears to be relatively full, there will be some attrition and some additional spots will probably open up between now and signing day.  Newberg also summarizes the highlights of this year's class.

Footnote:  I linked to AAS.com's Kirk Bohls' article yesterday, especially for the news about why ESPN has allegedly offered Texas the television deal and I didn't even catch this until this morning, but Bohls also said that an NFL scout said that there are 12 draftable seniors on Auburn's team.  That's probably a really high number, but it does give me a little big of solace knowing that Tuberville does have an eye for talent.  It's the coaching part that we have to be worried about.

Red Raider to Play Huskies:  Texas Tech will be in Seattle on Saturday afternoon playing the Washington HuskiesDT's Tommy Maggelson previews the game (DTN's preview is to be posted later today) and he talks with PG Mike Davis about the Huskies:

"It’s going to take time to get them guys into the movement of the game and the rhythm of the game because they’ve been out so long," Davis said. "But once we have everybody back, though, we’ll be full force. We’ll have two big guys again down low to rebound for us and help us on the boards as well as control the paint."

RP.com's Travis Cram and RP.com's Andy Ellis (he does the color commentary when John Harris isn't filling in) both write about the team, while Cram's article also looks at the Lady Raiders.

As usual great finds Seth;

You hit the old nail on the head. It looks like that Tubby can recurit, but can he coach. I would say that after reading some of Tech 92 link to the Auburn mess, that Tubby can’t coach. In my opinion, he relies way too heavily on his OC and DC. I really believe at the collegiate level that HC should be more involved in one or the other. Special Teams coach does not cut it. We saw where that took us this year.

I am also suprised that while the class is full, and given all the comments about how thin we were on defense, that we do not have more recruits on that side of the ball is a mystery. I am guessing that either we have good red shirt freshman stepping in next year, or we are just screwed in 2011. Much can be written about this.

And finally, I don’t think it is such a bad thing for Texas if they want their own newtork. Hopefully our new AD will be well schooled with these types of needs. I think ESPN is looking to sign up the Big 12. It would be good to get into a bidding war with ESPN and Fox Sports. Either way, I think we win, especaiily if our new AD is savy.

I think we are going to be in the Pac 16 within the next three years.

I already miss Tech Football. Another Red Raider First Down.

Tubs and his staffs have always had an eye for talent.

And for me, this is where it gets confusing. London Raider has pointed out in a couple of his articles (would like to link, but couldn’t find them) that Tubs and Leach have nearly the same winning percentage. Seems like Tubs achieved similar results to Leach with better talent.

a) So is the SEC that much better than the Big 12?
b) Is Tubs like Mack Brown?
c) Is Leach that good?
d) Is it a combo of the above?

Leach is that good and Alabama lost half their scholarships through probation when Tubs was at Auburn

Auburn filled a vacumn left when the Alabama program started to decline. Tubs record at Ole Miss, which sits in the same place in the SEC pecking order that Tech sits in the Big 12, wasn’t that good at all.

by mbrown603 on Dec 3, 2010 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

Leach was that good

No doubt in my mind we had possibly the best offensive coach in country. I do think Tuberville has a lot in common with Mack Brown especially from a public relations standpoint. I think if Tuberville has better assistants I wouldn’t be as concerned but for now I think we should be. Hopefully our young talented players can outplay what may be marginal coaching. That’s usually not the case of course.

I’m excited about our recruiting and look at it as a moral victory on the season. If this class continues to improve I will be very excited about the future.

I have to admit

I have found myself getting a little pumped about our recruiting this year, despite my best efforts to the contrary….. I hope I am not setting myself up for heartbreak….

Pony Excess

I think I’m going to have to figure out how to stomach Craig James to watch this, the trailer looks pretty good. Though I’m sure Craig is innocent…

I take this recruit as a validation of the direction of the offense.

Brewer is a really fun guy to watch in this spread offense and he is the ideal fit for the scheme.

Another in a long line of hs qb’s at TTU.

I am more excited about recruiting at this time of year than any other subject about football…and it is almost a full class. I don’t remember reading as much positive about a class in a long time. It is as if this years stars have more value that prior…I don’t know what that means. I have taken a perspective, as much fun as it is to watch between now and NSD, that it does not end until a player actually gets on campus in the Fall.

Where a couple of the names in this class end up playing is also fun for me, there are a couple that I just don’t know…one of the rb’s looks like he could be a candidate for Z…6-1, big, and with good running skills…the 5-9, 190ish lb athlete looks like a slot player…three guys one the OL, I think all three will play well and begin to show up as RS SO’s, one could show up sooner as center…if he is smart enough. How many will be linebackers, and how many will play DL and what spots.

SMU has a nice revival going with their football program, why show another round of stories about their bad days ? I know enough of that, and if it is about CJ, then it is a waste of good tv time for someone so insignificant in the scheme of college football…lay off SMU !!

Keep in mind

that about this time last year, we had a fantanstic recruiting clas. I can’t get too excited until we have ink on paper. Our class will Pearlie Graves and Myles Wade got made on signing day, last minute faxes as I remember. A lot can happen between now and February, but I am hoping for the best.

DTN only profiles commits

These are guys that have some interest in Texas Tech

Andre DavisDavis, 6-1 and 180 pounds, is a better player now than he was at this time a year ago. He’s happy with his progression as a receiver.

“That’s when I will do it,” he said. “I like Florida State, USF, Rutgers, Texas Tech, Cincinnati, Arkansas and a bunch of teams like that. I think I know of two visits — West Virginia and Texas Tech. Right now I am just open.”
http://espn.go.com/ncf/blog//name/newbergjamie/id/5783532/anthony-chickillo-having-record-season

JJ Gaines
Athlete
Irving, Texas
Nimitz
The staff at Illinois has also been in on athlete J.J. Gaines (Irving, Texas/Nimith), but Gaines is leaning towards Texas Tech right now.

John Jenkins
6-foot-4, 340-pound JUCO
Defensive tackle
Perkinston, Mississippi
Gulf Coast C.C.

John Jenkins committed to Oklahoma State last month and was supposed to bring his mom and father to the Pokes’ campus last weekend to see them play Oklahoma State. That visit never took place and it looks like the door is now cracked for its competitors. Texas Tech is coming down next week, he said.

Leon MacKey

Defensive lineman Leon Mackey (6-5, 266) of Hinds (Miss.) JC completed his official visit to USC on Sunday afternoon. Mackey, a former Gamecock signee, could be headed back to the Gamecocks if he can graduate and get accepted to USC. That will not be determined until the summer. He also plans to visit Alabama, Mississippi State and Texas Tech. His former prep school coach is now an assistant at Texas Tech.

Thanks

The D-Linemen look pretty solid. TTU has a good history of recuiting JUCO players that shine on defense. Sharpe and Slay both came in late if my memory serves me correctly.

We should hire a Blinn coach to pull in their JUCO talent pool i.e. Cam Newton. Sarcastically speaking, but kinda serious.

Pony Express

I can remember being a young kid following these guys like they were heros. I used to be a huge fan of SMU football when growing up in the DFW area and my dad would take me into Dallas to see them play. I actually got to see SMU and Pitt when Dan Marino was the QB back in the cotton bowl. Craig James and Erik Dickerson were incredible in the back field. These guys were almost too good to be real and apparently that was the case.

For some reason, I thought that Tech only had 13 available scholarships for this class due to year to year and aggregate limits. Maybe I misread something previously.

This recruiting class is really shaping up.

If this set of coaches don’t utilize the talent, I’m going to esplode. Our get drunk. Over and under on that anybody?

Three on the All-Conf team

Three on the HM. UT had only three total for all that. NICE!

OH

And at work here in Austin most of the people are UT fans. I think, however, they are of the t-shirt variety. As I continue to make Fridays my Red/Black clothes day at work, the number of burnt orange of any kind has dwindled to ZERO!….NICE, again.

Recruiting

is the key to all college sports. It’s not the Xs and Os that count for as much in college; it’s the Jimmys and Joes. The teams are not equalized with a draft. The rich get richer and the poor …

I am cautiously optimistic about recruiting this year. It is Tuberville’s strength. Let’s hope Prunty get can that 340 pound tackle to come to Tech; he is a prototype noseguard for the 3-4. Hold on to everyone verbally committed. There are future stars in this class.
