Red Raider Gridiron | Have a Happy New Year!

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

Happy New Year:  It's a little premature, but I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year's Eve tonight.  Stay safe and don't drink and drive.

Post Practice Press Conference:  The official site, with their official blog, has a new post and new video of yesterday's post practice press conference.  A couple of things here, which is that someone asked Tuberville if he intends on running the ball next year, which is somewhat interesting since I pointed out the headline and implication from DMN's Tom Spousta earlier this week.  Anyway, Tuberville said that he still wants to pass the ball, which is what Texas Tech actually does, although it never gets old to joke that this doesn't happen.

Also, if you can't go a day without a snarky comment about the team or the players, then I don't recommend watching the second half of the video, where there are a handful of players, DB Cory Lee, QB Jacob Karam, S Desmond Martin, DT Cody Rogers, WR Nick Cheesman and DB Jared Flannel, who visit the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.  The thing that jumps out at me is how engaging Karam is with the folks in the hospital.  If Karam never takes a snap for Texas Tech, and I hope that he has many snaps under center for Texas Tech, I think I can guarantee that Karam is going to positively impact other people's lives when he's done playing football.

Mitchem's Career Challenge:  LAJ's Don Williams writes about S Franklin Mitchem and the handful of injuries throughout his career.  Mitchem received his degree in general business last spring (Congrats!) he's sad-happy about looking at the last game of his career:

"I feel pretty excited about my last game," Mitchem said. "Also kind of sad, too, because the season’s coming to an end and my college career’s coming to an end, but the whole experience has been fun."

Northwestern and TicketCity Bowl Links:  Sippin' On Purple's Rodger Sherman with a double-official preview of Northwestern and Texas Tech, and with a score prediction . . . Chicago Tribune's Teddy Greenstein with a profile of NU's Venric Mark, who's mom graduated from Texas Tech . . . SI.com's Stewart Mandel previews the game and predicts a winner . . . DMN's Tom Spousta writes that a Northwestern win would be the first since 1949 . . .

Leach Stuff:  Again, it would make me incredibly happy to keep the comments to Leach in this FanPost unless there's some sort of breaking news, but Leach did meet with Maryland yesterday, but apparently he's not the only candidate

2011 Recruiting Table:  As Tech92 pointed out yesterday, Texas Tech has apparently moved up in the Rivals.com recruiting rankings, which as we all know doesn't mean much until sometime in February.  Still, I would think it's encouraging to see a highly rated class possibly coming to Texas Tech.  It's interesting to see so many people praise Tuberville for his recruiting efforts, but keep in mind that typically, it's the position coaches and coordinators that make the initial contact with these players.  The coaching staff has taken a bit of a beating for their coaching efforts on the field, but they do appear to be getting after it on the recruiting trail.  Personally, I'm not willing to say that these guys can't get it done on the field, especially after just one season (And I still don't get how people are more upset at the offense not being up to snuff when the defense fell 67 spots in total defense, but fell 13 spots in total offense.) as I think I'd like at least one more year to see what these guys can do, especially defensively.

Anyway, my new and updated recruiting table has been officially updated is after the jump.  I've also updated the recruiting sidebar and the 2011 football recruiting page has also been updated.  I tried to go over everything carefully:  LB Sam Eguavoen was given a rating by all of the services (I think he was not rated previously); LB Terrell Hartsfield was given a 4th star by Rivals and a higher Rivals Rating; WR Marcus Kennard was given a star rating by Scout;  and Jace Amaro was given a tenth of a point higher Rivals Rating.  You can compare and contrast the changes with the table at the end of the Kennard profile

My General Comment This Morning..

There really is no good place to put it so here it is… Does the Big 12 really suck this bad this year…..? I have watched some of our “better” teams this year get beat by bottom feeders in other conferences this year… This does not appear to be too encouraging for those lucrative TV contracts we have been promised….

hit the wrong button

Is the state of Big 12 football on a downward spiral? Top assistants are abandoning ship, our defenses have all looked inept, except for NE, but they were playing a weak UW team…. Our spread offenses have sputtered, and we have yet to witness another potential OU meltdown in Arizona yet….. are we challenging the big east for last?? Oh and I forgot to mention the fact that none of us know how we will look in Dallas……

Neb got manhandled up front by Washington. Gave up almost 270 yds on the ground. So they looked pretty inept, too. Especially on offense.

The Big XII is vastly overrated in my book; especially this year and last. And bowl season often proves that out. I think there are two really decent teams and then a bunch of teams that happen to have nice records.

I think a head to head round robin tourney of the Big XII and Pac 10 or ACC would be pretty enlightening.

FG don't let a few facts get in the way of a good story

So the Big 12 is 1-4 in its bowl games so far? So what? So is Conference USA.

- Baylor (lost to 6-6 Illinois)
- Nebraska (lost to 6-6 Washington)
- Missouri (lost to 7-5 Iowa)
- Kansas State (lost to 7-5 Syracuse)

In reality those other teams were juggernauts whose records masked their true abilities. The Big 12 teams fought valiantly and the only thing which proves those other teams were better teams is the final score. So, it’s just a technical argument anyway.

Plus Nebraska won’t be in the Big 12 next year and neither will Colorado which has the same colors as Missouri, so you can’t really count those losses.

Baylor lost to Illinois who was coached by Ron Zook who used to be the head of coach of Florida which is in the SEC so effectively Baylor lost to an SEC team, which can happen to anybody. Remember when we lost to Alabama on a fluke field goal in the Cotton Bowl?

Kansas State was playing in New York against Syracuse, so it was more like a home game for Syracuse anyway. Did you see how windy it was?

You’ve just got to look deeper into the numbers than the (air quotes) “scores.” Anybody can do that.

Witness Oklahoma State’s domination of 7-5 Arizona – now there is a victory which better defines our conference. Mike Stoops is the head coach at Arizona and his brother is the head coach of Oklahoma which is one of the best teams in the country. Now, tell me that’s not a victory the Big 12 can be proud of?

Just think if we beat NW which beat Iowa which beat Missouri (which will probably still wind up in the Top 25), then in reality that shows that we are also a Top 25 team. Forget about the “polls” – they are dominated by East Coast elitist journalists.

I don’t know what everyone is upset about.

You Leachers need to move on and get with the program.

Nice...

Top 25 doesn’t really matter… We did that last year during one of our most mediocre seasons…
Anyway, I’m pretty sure we’re going to end up in the Top 25 in recruiting this year…
We all know that’s more important than what actually happens on the field…

I was just asking a question....

Trying to generate a little conversation….now I feel all dirty….. Maybe my trip to Dallas will make me feel better… I did use the air quotes and I knew it might bite me in the booty…

By the way, I hope to start my 2011 Leach free so I really hope the Captain gets a job soon. I really want to be able to speak my mind about TT and his boys and not get lumped in with Team Leach. Time for us to judge TT on his own actions, or lack there of. It is time for us to remove our Leach colored glasses and get a real good look at our new style of football. Is it really boring or am I just mad that Leach is gone? Did we really look that bad on offense against real teams or am I just mad that Leach is gone? Is TT really not a good coach anymore or am I just mad that Leach is gone? Was the Jeep that bad of an DC or am I just mad that Leach is gone? I hope one year later I can know for sure…

My quest begins this weekend in Dallas, TX. From the sounds of it I might be mostly alone in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, but I just have to know….

Regarding your recruiting comment in the original text

Yes, you’re absolutely right. I’m guilty of giving credit to Tuberville for the recruiting success. I’m also guilty of blaming Tuberville when things go wrong in a game or play call that he likely has not a lot to do with.

Either way, great work on the recruiting trail, coaches!!

Washington v Nebraska

Set mankind back 50 years offensively….about 55 yards passing for each team. Nebraska should hire mangino and move on to the big 12. They really are pissed at the big 12. Their kicker henery is an all American but didn’t get big 12 honors.

If there is a way to list who the lead tech coach is for each recruit…it would be interesting to see who is doing what. I know they are assigned a geography..so even listing that would be helpful.

regarding Karam

for over a year, I’ve been a big fan of Karam. I have never seen him play a single down of football on game day but everything I’ve read about him shows him to be possibly the best “team player” ever and a credit to the university. I also remember how he’s been full of complimentary words for Tech throughout his own recruiting and he’s helped recruit other players IIRC. I remember a DTN column noting how he was on the travel roster for one game even though he’d have been the 4th QB, because he was THAT good for team morale. That’s one MORE reason I really wanted the kid to get some playing time this year when Sheffield and Potts struggled. I hope he gets some game time, and even if not, I’d love to see him on the sidelines as a GA and I hope he stays with the program.

How about the KSU penalty.

We had the exact same call for the exact same offense go against us earlier this year and I just don’t get it. Yes I know the explanation that no demonstration designed to bring attention to oneself and all of that, but how much different is a salute to the stands from behind the end zone than someone standing in the end zone pointing at the sky or kneeling down to pray. All 3 of these actions bring attention to the player and if the NCAA doesn’t quickly get a handle on this issue, we may see one of our guys getting penalized for a hat tip to God.

Seems to me that the player brought attention to himself by scoring the touchdown in the first place...

Score a touchdown… get a penalty…
I think the “bringing attention to oneself” criteria is stupid….
Excessive celebration or taunting would make more sense… both are still judgement calls, but at least they’re not stupid…

Happy New Year to all DTN members and their families. Stay safe.

I also hope, like filemon, that all of us can have a Leach-free 2011. I don’t mean we completely forget him and the lawsuits, but that the present coaches at Tech will receive all of our comments, positive or negative, on the basis of their own abilities and not as a comparison to Leach or any other former Tech coach. I think it is well documented about how each and every one of us feel concerning Leach, the three amigos, Tuberville, Brown, “Jeep”, Ruff and everyone else involved in Tech football over the last twelve months of upheaval and renewal. So, hopefully, we can now go into the new year with a renewed commitment to all things Texas Tech.

The recruiting has been really good this year and still has a chance of getting better if Tech has a great bowl win. Those players representing Tech at the children’s hospital did a great job and we should all be appreciative of them. Karem and the other players are excellent ambassadors for Tech.

I agree that the Big-XII has not been well represented in the bowl games thus far. Some close call losses were expected to be big wins for the Big-XII. Okie State did well. Others played OK but not as good as was anticipated by us, the media or the whole nation. Hopefully, the final three games will show everyone that the last year’s edition of the Big-XII is not nearly as bad as what has been shown so far, and they will win out, giving the Big-XII a break-even bowl record. It should have been better, but I think we would all take a 4-4 record right now, no questions asked.

I am really stoked about our future. I think a new DC will get the team to where it needs to be on that side of the ball and this year will quickly be put behind us. The offense this past year showed signs of life at times, but poor play-calling by a green OC may have cost us dearly at times. But he is not the only reason for the under-achievements. I think the players are at fault there as well, for whatever reason. Next year will bring forth a lot of new players from a redshirt year, or just from riding the bench behind some more experienced players, plus some great incoming talent that could contribute immediately.

I look for improved play next year just because this year, with all of the outside and inside distractions, was really difficult for some of the leaders on offense and defense. With a year under the belts and a renewed vigor the team should be able to perform better across the board. We will need that upbeat improvement because with the new one division conference alignment all of the teams in the conference will be pushing harder than ever to win every game, because there will be no conference championship game to compete for in a split conference. It could also mean fewer bowls being allocated to the conference, so the competition will be much more hard-fought.

For those going to the bowl game, may God be watching over you and may you be celebrating with the rest of us a huge bowl win. Just do it smart. Don’t drink and drive. Have someone along who will be sober to do the driving. Like maybe a spouse, fiance or friend who hates sports and booze and will make sure you get home without incident.
