DTN T-Shirt Contest :: We're Taking Nominations

It's time to get this started in this thread, which some of you may want to bookmark, I'm giving you all the resources I have in regards to logos and wordmarks for the DTN logo.  Before we get started, wanted to give everyone a history lesson regarding the infamous Double-T Nation logo and the current incarnation of the DTN logo. Doubletnation_medium

When DTN first started, this was the logo that was created for me.  At that point, I really didn't care about what the logo looked like, I was simply ready to get started blogging for SB Nation and I could care less about aesthetics.  For those of you who had been around since the beginning of DTN (there's probably not many of you, but back then I was happy to have 100 visitors a day) this logo stayed around for a year or two, but after a while I didn't think that this logo was really representative of what DTN was about, especially when I was writing about more than just football.

In any event, I decided that I would, on my own, pay for someone to create a logo for DTN and hope like hell that the powers that be at SB Nation would approve and agree to change the logo.

I'm a huge fan of the blog UniWatch and noticed an ad for a company that does old school design work, Superba Graphics.  I wanted an old school feel for any new logo and I didn't think that the initial DTN logo was really memorable in any way shape or form.  The folks at Superba Graphics were great to work with and I had initially only asked them for just one logo that would go in the upper left portion of the website, but they gave me a handful of logos and wordmarks, which you'll sometimes see on DTN.  I asked those higher-ups what they thought about the logo and was given the green light to change the logo and history was made.

When we had the discussion a couple of months ago about getting some DTN t-shirts made up, at that time, I was going to have to purchase the t-shirts, take in payments and ship the shirts.  Things have changed.  A couple of weeks ago, we received word from SB Nation that they had just partnered with a website, ProBlogStores, that would take care of design, printing, receiving payment and shipping.  The nice thing for me is that there's no out of pocket money for myself in terms of purchasing a bunch of t-shirts that may not get sold and I don't have to worry about receiving money and getting the t-shirts shipped in a timely manner.

During this conversation, I made mention that I would not be making any profits off of the t-shirts, and wanted to sell them as close to actual cost as humanly possible.  Well, some things have changed.

To make a really long story short, my wife and I have decided to adopt a child from Ethiopia.  We received our acceptance from the adoption agency last week and we're incredibly excited and happy about the process.  And to answer the question floating around in your heads, but are too polite to ask, my wife and I have been trying to start a family for the past two years and just haven't had any luck.  We're both healthy and we've done as much as we want to do to start a family, but it just hasn't worked out.  Without trying to get too preachy, we've always considered adoption to be something that we're both interested in doing, and about six months ago, my wife and I finally came to the realization that sometimes it's not what you want that's important.  Another question that you might have is "why Ethiopia?" and this was something that my wife and I researched and discerned about for quite some time and we both were inspired with this choice.  I could go on for quite some time about the how and why, but I think inspired is a good way to explain it.

For those of you who don't know, an adoption is an expensive process, and when I told my wife about how SB Nation had set the bloggers up with a store and that we could make a profit, we both thought though would be a good way to raise some money to help pay for the adoption process.

Dtnblackwmround_medium The reason I'm even telling you guys and gals all of this is that I didn't want to contradict myself and I wanted you to know why I'm keeping the profits, until the adoption process has ended.  I asked the co-authors about this over the weekend and the overwhelming thought was that even if I told you I was buying cases of beer with the profits, you'd probably be fine with that and I'm hoping that everyone is okay with this proposition.  As far as our timeline is concerned it's a 9 to 12 month proposition and my wife and I will take a trip to Ethiopia to pick up our child, which means that sometime during football season in 2010, we'll be making that trip.  After the adoption process has ended, I'm going to try to find some Lubbock charity to give the t-shirt profits to in any given year.  I've got to do some more research on that, but when that day comes, I'll make sure everyone knows where the money is going to go.

Now, let's to get to those t-shirts. Here's what I have in terms of DTN logos and wordmarks.  Here's a PDF version of all of the DTN logos and wordmarks.  I've also converted this PDF into some images:  DTN rider with black background; DTN rider with red background; DTN wordmark with black background; DTN wordmark with red background; and DTN circle wordmark.  I'm sure that I could pull some more if needed.

So here's how I propose we do this.  For those of you who are capable of creating graphics, then you can send me your submission (doubletnation AT gmail DOT com) or for those of you who are graphically challenged, then feel free to post your idea.  You can also come up with a catchy phrase and the ProBlogStore folks can create the t-shirt.  I'd like for everyone who likes a DTN user's idea to "rec" the comment or give a "+1" and in about a week or so, we'll put it to a vote and have three or four t-shirts ready for sale.

Now, get to work.

Best Wishes Seth. We are parents for the second time. The second one definitely did not arrive as we had planned so we definitely understand the difficulties of conception. We were very blessed to have our second after years of trying. I’m sure the two of you will make great parents. Best of luck!

Best of luck Seth, and from all of us who have enjoyed DTN so much over the years, thank you for everything.

As far as the current choices go,

I’m all for DTN Circle Wordmark in Black and the DTN Rider with Black Background.

Are we going to lose the pirate ship altogether? Because if not, I have some great ideas.

Also, does anybody like the idea of our username on the shirt somewhere?

That is one lucky kid

Congrats Seth.

1. Long live capitalism – you work hard creating a blog that is free to its users so you deserve to have a little revenue stream

2. I love the VINTAGE IDEA. Check out this site Seth http://shop.originalretrobrand.com
They make some cool retro college and pro clothing. If its possible to print the shirt on an american apparel vintage t shirt I think everyone will love the feel. These are the same shirts that RedRaider Outfiiter use to create their “Thrift Store” collection and its the same shirts many bands use to print up concert shirts. JUST A SUGGESTION.

3. I like the double t nation text logo vintaged on the front of a t shirt.

I like the Vintage idea too

And you could add Est. 2008, and some sort of tag line. Looks like this:

Old School. New School. Our School.

Maybe too cheesy but I kinda like it.

I would buy a brown paper sack with DTN written on the side

if it meant benefitting this site in any way….and the fact that it’s going to help with your adoption process makes it that much more worthwhile. I had already held you in the highest regards, but after hearing about your plans to adopt a child, you have now acheived hero status in my book! As you know, my wife and I have been expecting our first child since last may, and part of the reason you haven’t seen any posts from me lately is that we had a little lady raider last Tuseday (Feb. 2…coincidentally Ground Hog’s day). It didn’t fully sink in for me until the first time I held her, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned this past week, its that the feeling of fatherhood is truly euphoric. A big, west Texas Ten-Gallon hats off to you and your wife, Seth.

fair point. it's a big number

But I would expect a lot of guys will buy a couple of shirts. Then you have the word of mouth factor. Then you might get one for fellow Tech alum’s that are friends.

When you think about it, it isn’t out of the question to get to that number. Maybe we should move the line to 750.

I’m stoked for you, especially that the adoption process is going well so far. My brother and sister-in-law are going through a similar situation and so are a couple of our close friends. I couldn’t be happier that the profits from the t-shirts that I order will be going to you and your wife. Last month I was pondering the legality of setting up a pay-pal where we could donate to you directly, and that seems even more relevant now.

Also… just a shot in the dark, but did you have to go all the way to Ethiopia before you found a Wal-Mart that wasn’t fully stocked with burnt orange?

OK, first let me say congratulations

NOW, the selfish me understands what’s going to happen next. You are going to be responsible for the upbringing of a CHILD and we all know what happens next, hobbies fall to the wayside. That’s why I believe you should take FULL opportunity to profit in any way you possibly can with DTN because you are going to need to justify the time you devote to DTN. I don’t know what I would do without my “daily” daily diatribe. BTW, I actually looked into adopting a kid right here in Texas once and it turns out that alot of them qualify for free college tuition if they are a ward of the state when you adopt them. They have every kind of kid you can think of and they come in singles, pairs or even more. So if anyone out there is looking for a kid, that’s another avenue.

Awesome news

Seth regarding the adoption. I have a 18 month old and 4 year old and they make me feel so blessed every day. I like the vintage logo displayed by SAR above and idea of putting the established date makes sense. That would look really cool on the back with a smaller block logo on the front upper right or left side. You may even want to display the web address on back so people get the idea or maybe call it “The Raider nation’s best sports blog”.

Let me say, it is the most rewarding, heartfelt and roller-coaster ride experience that you will ever have. We look forward to hearing updates on the process and are willing to support you any way possible. We’ll buy shirts to start!

I am so happy for you and Mrs. Seth! Sending prayers your way that the road ahead is smooth and swift. Very excited about the t-shirts – I think I already know what all my family is getting for Christmas this year!
Also, Seth, I know this is a long way off, but I live in Lubbock and work for a non-profit organization here. When the time comes for you to decide where the rest of the shirt profits should go, I’d be happy to help you narrow down your options – just let me know.

Way to call me out on being too young.

I love these old pictures though. My Pa-Paw was a staff sergeant in WWII, and its always interesting to read his old letters and see the old pictures. I look identical to him, just a bit lighter since he was about half Commanche. Little known fact for you though. When we were invading Normandy, there were French women in hay stacks shooting American soldiers. Papaw had his foot shot off by a French female sniper. Funny how history is covered up when it involves our allies screwing us over…

by RdrPwr on Feb 10, 2010 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't mean to call you out

You were just the first one that came to mind in the right age range. And I don’t doubt the story about the haystacks. My dad told me they often came down to low altitude on return trips so the waist gunners could have ‘target practice’ on the haystacks. Said many of them blew up when they got hit and others shot back.

I want to know why that part is left out of the history books. Is it because its France?

by RdrPwr on Feb 10, 2010 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

It is in the history books.

There was a contingent of French who sold out to the Nazis as the least after they invaded France, they were Vichy. When the Allies invaded North Africa, we had to go through them, I believe some seas battles were fought leading to that invasion.

The Allied French Resistance fought them as much as they fought the Nazis.

on the facebook page… right click… select “view image” it should bring up the dedicated page for that image… that’s what you link on here… my pictures are all in an album that’s not allowed to be viewed by anyone, friends, network, or whatever, just me… but they still show up linked… so you can do it too

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. I’m going to try to answer a bunch of comments here.

1. We cannot use any form or fashion of the double-t. I would imagine that’s a big no-no, even if the copyright has expired.
2. I would highly doubt that we’ll be able to customize each shirt with names on the back, but we could all take our shirts to your local sports store (where you get all of the team apparel) and get the name put on the back.
3. I’m going to utilize Aiyleen’s fanpost to post some of the user submissions and some of the submissions in this thread.

Any chance

of commissioning the Robert K “Chappy” Ullman character to render us up our own “jersey wearing girl”? Or would the uni be too much of an issue. Could drawing her up in the old uni be a way around Copyright issues
