DTN T-Shirts Post

Instead of scrolling through the 200+ comments on the original post, we can post our graphics or ideas in this one post. The idea is this: Comment with a graphic or a link to your graphic, or post your idea for a design, and replies to those can be recs or feedback; but let's try not to start a new comment thread unless you're posting an idea. It will just help clear the clutter.

[Note by Seth C, 02/11/10 5:05 AM CST ]  I'm editing here to remind everyone to please rec. the submission that you like the most and in about a week, we'll vote on the best three or four.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Great Design. Simple and clean. Less is more.

This design would look good on grey(vintage look), black, white, charcoal(vintage look). You could even do without the back graphic. Most printers charge more for front and back so this might be a way to lower the cost and or increase Seth’s margins.

Side note: A username can be added to the sleeve or back or wherever with not much cost to the buyer just by taking the shirt to a screen printer that personalizes various garments.

I would like to see the front logo be over the heard and have www.doubletnation.com instead of Est. 2006, but otherwise, i think this is my favorite so far. nice and simple

I was thinking there definitly needs to be:

DoubleTNation.com on any shirt, plus a comment like"For serious discussion of all things Tech." or for “Adult” discussion. Anyway, we got to put something short and sweet in there so people will know what we are and how to find us. (that’s right, we and us, we’re a community even though some of us don’t really contribute much, but we all benefit from the hard work of others. Me being more of a taker. And KWash being the town drunk. :) you learn some new words if you pull up next to him at the bar to watch a game. (fun natured ribbing font)

Best one so far IMO. Only changes I could think of would be to put the address somewhere (as stated by others too) or you could even switch sides and put the Masked Rider over the heart.

Posting Help

SB Nation doesn’t have the ability to upload images directly. If anyone has an image, drawing, etc that they want want to post but don’t know how, I’ll be glad to help. If you have a facebook account and post it there, I can lift it and post it here (you can delete it from Facebook once I have it). It doesn’t have to be Facebook; it can be any site where you can upload images. Or you can email it to me and I’ll get it posted that way.

Should we be nervous about using someone else's artwork?

I think it’s a cool design, but I think if we use the girl, then shouldn’t we ask for permission first?

Your are correct! We must ask permission!

I used someone else’s artwork. And I bet he wouldn’t like to see it utilized without his permission. I also did a “somewhat decent” job of making the girls arm do a Guns-Up.
If you/we/all decided to go with a design like this, then by utilizing my “somewhat decent” editing job, the designer would know what to go with.

http://rkullman.blogspot.com/2010/01/commissions.html

My standard rate for doing the single-figure sports commissions is $250. For that you get both the original hand drawn art (size 11″ × 13″ or thereabouts) , plus a fancy color print of the image with all the logos, uniform details, etc. in there. That may sound kinda steep, but keep in mind that it’s a totally one of a kind item, and that you can be specific with details such as likeness, number for the jersey, and other fun stuff like that.

i like this design too, but if you don’t want to pay that ridiculous $250 fee, try Scarborough Specialties in Lubbock ( http://www.scarspec.com/index.html ) , i have known a lot of people who have used them in the past and they always do a great job with their designers (they have some examples on their website), so they may be able to do something similar to this design, but for a cheaper price. Another company in Lubbock that i have personally used before for shirt design is Advanced Graphix ( http://www.advancedgraphix.net/) they are great at taking a design and printing it onto different types of shirts for a really good price if you do decide to pay this designer and use this exact print.

Just some suggestions…

Just a comment from someone who runs websites.

I’ll bet Seth would appreciate adding the “.com” to one side of the shirts or putting it somewhere so that people know it’s a website.

by Damien Franco on Feb 11, 2010 2:30 AM CST reply actions

That would be good, but the logos

I posted yesterday didn’t have the .com, which is why a bunch of these submissions don’t have the .com. It would be nice, but maybe it would cause people to ask what DTN is?

I am recing this one.

The main issue is that the gpsf is from Kirby, so we’d be using someone else’s artwork, but if we could get around that I’d buy.

GPSF is the biggest meme of this website. It is the most appropriate shirt for an inside joke.

Go register. Or else.

That picture is also really small and I don’t know if it could be blown up enough to look good on a shirt. :(

by merrik on Feb 11, 2010 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

could your design be enlarged enough to fit on the back?

I really like yours that included painted face girl, the bell ringer, and the gpsf. Keep TTUMAR’s DTN logo over the heart and your design on the back.

TTUMAR’s DTN logo would look good over the heart on all shirts and then can put different designs on the back (pistols, flags, GPSF)

I mentioned these items at the end of yesterday's post:

1. We cannot use any form or fashion of the double-t. I would imagine that’s a big no-no, even if the copyright has expired. There’s no reason to even take a chance.
2. I would highly doubt that we’ll be able to customize each shirt with names on the back, but we could all take our shirts to your local sports store (where you get all of the team apparel) and get the name put on the back.
3. I’m going to rec. this post to get it close to the top and again, keep submitting your ideas by email (doubletnation AT gmail DOT com) and I’ll get them posted the next morning.

1. Bummer...

I’ve always thought I would absolutely love the existing image and banner if you could just work in a double-t… space the “na_ion” a little lower, with the base of the current T as the ~ top of the lower T… I imagined there was a reason this was not already part of the design…

by Houston Raider on Feb 11, 2010 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

Copyright and Trademark Issues

Just thought I’d shed a little light on the copyright/trademark confusion. A copyright is granted automatically to any written or published work without application to any governmental entity. The copyright is usually enforceable by the copyright holder for a certain amount of time after creation. Disney is starting to bump up against that limit and every so often Congress updates the copyright statutes to extend the time, allowing Disney to keep Mickey Mouse under copyright protection. Most anything created after Mickey Mouse is going to be protected.

Trademarks (which is what Tech has on their logo, TT, etc.) are registered with the US Trademark people. If you want a trademark on a brand or symbol associated with your product, you pay a registration fee and it’s yours as long as you continue to use it. If you drop use of the trademarked item for 5 years, it’s back in the public domain. There is otherwise no statute of limitations on the use of a trademark. Tech can continue to claim trademark protection on the TT symbol to infinity (and beyond), if they so choose.

So, don’t mess with the double T! It doesn’t look like any of our DTN Legal Squad have intellectual property expertise so we’d have to hire outside counsel – could get expensive – and we’ve already designated T-Shirt profits to the adoption fund.

Especially if there was a cool quote or phrase similiar to the come and take it flag.

Also, I would order a few coozies. Not that I need any seeings how I have a drawer overflowing with them but a double t-nation coozie would be sweet.

One side could be the double t-nation logo or design and the other the football schedule or funniest quote of the year from a poster.

It is supposed

to represent the Caprock, Yellowhouse Canyon, the one dissecting Lubbock. It doesn’t have to be there. Also, the second line could be eliminated. What I really would like to see remain if we do keep the silhouette is the two guns up by the rider.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

A couple of additional thoughts:

Although I haven’t asked, I’d imagine that we cannot use the phrases “Red Raiders” and “Texas Tech” for the same copyright issues.

I get it.....

But that makes me crazy…

Because we can't even mention the school

It seems that somewhere, on any design we choose…..that red guns up symbol should be a part of our design. We know we can use that, as we know (bambamdip’s dad) the creator. Also, throwing this sign up is like breathing for us.

Not only breathing, but a way of life for some of us.

Every morning when I take a shower, I crouch down in the Terminator 2 pose with my Guns Up. I then hum the theme song to T2 as I “rise up”……. But then the damn shower curtain gets stuck to my leg and ruins the whole experience.

Any picture I’ve been in my Guns Up is always flashing. Wedding Photos, Family Photos, Drunken Photos, whatever.

You must be standing WAY too close to the shower curtain.

It may just be me but the rider on the original logo looks like he is sbout to fall off.

I have a new submission. It is on my facebook page.

Here it is:

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

I think the problem is that you need to add “.jpg” to the end of the url after you paste it into the image dialog box here at DTN. The address must end in .jpg or the software won’t recognize it as a picture. Notice there’s a DOT in front of .jpg.

I like that rider much more than the one with two hands up.

I don’t quite know how to say it, but the other one looks really kinda gay. Something about the wrists. Plus it’s falling off the horse. Brings back bad memories.

If you make the T big enough, the word Nation could act as the smaller T & give you almost the logo

BIg Double above, a smllish Na and ion on either side of the big T base. It’s a double T without violating copyright.

Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.

Just so everyone is aware

This is a silhouette of the statue on campus. I felt it was a more actionlike Raider.

There IS a copywrited/trademarked image alot like that one

On hats and bud light sponsor posters, but if we could have this one, it’s my favorite so far. Classy and classic.

I like this one

And the guns are remindful of those probably used by the old Calvary Soldiers that rode with Col. MacKenzie way back when…..

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

by TTpilk645 on Feb 15, 2010 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

These are 1860 Colt Army

cap and ball revolvers. In 1871 the army had many of these converted to fire a metallic cartridge. Since MacKenzie was fighting in Texas between 1871 and 1874 it is a good bet some of his guys were carrying the conversion model.
I find the 1860 to be one of the finest looking hand guns ever made.
A much sleeker gun than the 1873 “Peace Maker” that you see in most westerns.
They are also a very natural aiming hand gun. I can nail a pie pan at 75 yards, and a large pizza pan is in trouble at 100. You can never be too safe with marauding pie and pizza pans loose on the plains.

I'd buy one of each of these three.

And one thing about shirts in general. We’ve probably all had those silk-print shirts where the words/pictures have that sticky, rubbery feel to them. You know, the kind that looks great at first until they go through the drier a couple of times. Then the printing starts to crack and curl and pretty soon the shirt is relegated to working on the car.

I’d rather pay a few dollars more and get a shirt that will last. I’m just saying….

This is fun

But I like bmaxw’s #4 version of the two pistols.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

I do too

But I wonder how much detail we’re gonna lose in converting that to a T-shirt transfer.

Not this one, or the one in the canyon, but the one in the middle is " just" right.

Also, I know I have no creative skillz

But whichever design we choose, am I alone in thinking the web address should be significantly larger. A. We’re trying to drive hits to dtn, and B. If it’s at the bottom if the shirt in small letters, we are missing our mission. Would a large doubletnation.com on the back shoulder Luke where last names on jerseys go be tacky. Also, the back is definitly the place for the address. You get way more time to look at it when you’re walking behind someone or standing behind them as opposed to just a passing glance when you pass someone or are facing them because people don’t want to get caught staring.
