Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.15.10

No Time:  I still haven't had time to watch Saturday's game against the Aggies, which means that I still haven't written my post game thoughts.  I started writing a couple of football features early Sunday morning and as a result, I sorta forgot about the basketball game.  The problem of course is that there's a game tomorrow, @ Baylor, another team that's playing really well.  Yesterday was spent cleaning up limbs that fell due to the Winter Storm of 2010 and telling my wife how awesome she is for actually marrying me.

T-Shirt Contest:  I'll be posting some new submissions over the next couple of days, so continue to take a gander.  Later this week, I'll be setting up a poll for what appears to be the most popular choices, and yes, I think we'll set up the store to have 3 or 4 different options.  Different strokes for different folks.

Coming Soon:  Aside from working on finalizing some recruiting thoughts (later this week), I'm also working on taking a look at the depth chart at each position.  We've also got the final DTN Post-Season Awards post, which will be posted later this morning.  I'm hoping to have the depth chart work finished before spring practices start and then we'll take another look at each position after spring practices.  Things will change, I have no doubt about that.  Also on the horizon is a look at each new coach, which I'll probably write during the summer.

DT Coach McElroy:  The Abilene Reporter News' Joey D. Richards talked with new defensive line coach Sam McElroy, who was the previous head coach at Tarleton St.  Here's McElroy on his new boss:

"I’ve known a couple of people that one time or another knew Coach Tuberville, and in this business, you’ve got to have some form of contact to get your foot in the door," he said. "I had an opportunity to interview and ended up being offered a defensive line job. Tech is a great place, and Coach Tuberville is a tremendous man who runs the program based on character and integrity, and I wanted to be a part of that."

I had no idea that McElroy was such a successful head coach, it will be interesting to see how his relationships with coaches will affect his ability to recruit, especially considering he's been at a NCAA Div. II university for the past eight years.

A Real Sweetheart:  DT's Adam Coleman writes that LT Lonnie Edwards spent his Valentine's Day making you feel inadequate as he successfully proposed to his girlfriend on the field of Jones AT&T Stadium on Valentine's Day:

Texas Tech offensive lineman Lonnie Edwards made the day a memorable one by proposing to his girlfriend and former Tech volleyball player Brittany Hughes at the stadium.

A small group of friends and family attended as Edwards surprised Hughes with the proposal.

Edwards blindfolded Hughes until the two arrived on the field. He walked her down the Jones AT&T Stadium ramp to the 50-yard line where friends and family watched, flowers in his left hand. When Hughes removed her blindfold, Edwards was on one knee and what seemed like the biggest smile in the world at the time graced her face as she accepted his proposal.

"It’s a very special moment," Edwards said. "Football’s my life. Apparently, she is too. We’ve been dating for about two years and I thought I’m a junior this year and I figured, why not?

Congrats to Lonnie and Brittany!

Recapping the Loss:  LAJ's Courtney Linehan and DT's Mike Graham both have articles recapping Saturday's loss to the Aggies.  By just perusing the boxscore, it's a familiar theme . . . missed free throws and being out-rebounded by double-digits.  Many of you have mentioned the quick shots and lack of flow offensively, and apparently, head coach Pat Knight noticed:

"Now you go back, you get beat by two, every little thing counts," Tech coach Pat Knight said. "Every bad pass, missed lay-up or quick shot — now it really stands out."

Alumni Game Success:  I call it a success because it appears that the alumni appreciated head coach Dan Spencer inviting them back to continue to be a part of the program and the younger players could probably learn a thing or two from those who preceded them.  The current squad whipped up on the alumni, 21-1 and the current squad was led by newcomer Bobby Doran, who pitched 5 innings, struck out 6 and walked none in his Texas Tech debut.  As it is with most teams, the success of this team is dependent on the pitching staff coming together.
