Sigh: It's a talent problem. That's the difference between being a successful basketball program and not. And it's frustrating for me personally because I'm a fan of Pat Knight and I want him and Texas Tech to have success, but I'm starting to lose faith. Last night's game was a microcosm of what's wrong with Texas Tech in that Baylor simply had better athletes and better basketball players. Texas Tech has talented basketball players, but the problem is that most of the rest of the Big 12 has better and more talented basketball players. Mike Singletary is a good basketball player, but there's no way in hell he can compete athletically with a majority of the players he's matched up against. He's either too small to guard true small forwards, too slow to guard shooting guards and he's not tall enough to finish inside and must rely on getting foul calls in order to be effective. And this probably sounds like I'm picking on Singletary, but the truth is that you could say the same thing about every starter for Texas Tech versus every starter for Baylor (maybe sans Lomers).
How about this one statistic: Texas Tech 1 block; Baylor 11 blocks.
There may not be a statistic more indicative of athletic ability more so than blocks and it's incredibly evident that other than D`walyn Roberts, this team really lacks elite athleticism.
So back to Pat Knight and the crossroads that I'm at personally. PK has certainly been better than last year. He is improving as a coach, but the problem I have is that this team is flawed at the core and a team that has 4 junior and 1 senior starters may eventually struggle to make the NIT. Fast forward to next year and you have to wonder if these same players who will be a year older, who will still have the same flaws to athletically match up with top tier opponents. And then fast forward to two years from now and PK is replacing 7 players (there are 7 juniors on the current roster) and where is this program.
I have no idea if the athletic department is at the same type of crossroads that I'm at, and I suppose that's the biggest question that we'll never know. I don't know if its coincidence that this morning there's an article from FWST's Mike Jones about former UTEP, TAMU and Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie and how he's changed his ways and ready to get back into coaching (he says he's no longer drinking at all). I'd be incredibly nervous about hiring a guy like Gillispie, but I'm admittedly confused and concerned about where this program is headed and if it's even headed on the right path.
Part of that confusion lies with the thought that PK offered a scholarship to Gulf Coast CC Paul Cooper, a 6-8/250 power forward who has hardly played for Gulf Coast and is shooting 36% and 5 points a game. Thankfully, it appears that PK may be looking elsewhere as it appears that 6-8/225 forward Godwin Okonji will be taking a visit to Lubbock over the weekend, at least according to Okonji's Rivals.com's profile. This is at the very least a step in the right direction in that PK cannot continue to stay committed to a player like Cooper that hasn't performed. I have no idea if Cooper's been injured, but this looks like a bad situtation. Okonji at the very least is a player that will have 4 years of eligibility compared with Cooper's 2 years. Okonji is also playing on the best prep team in the nation, Las Vegas' Findlay and was recently featured in a Las Vegas Sun article. Also while searching for stuff on Okonji, I found this feature about him on YouTube.
LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes this morning that it was the defensive lapses that cost Texas Tech the game last night. Linehan's article really focuses not on the defense, or lack thereof, but on the blocking ability of Ekpe Udo:
"We don’t have anybody like that in practice unless I gave a guy a broom and had him block shots like that," Knight said. "We really don’t have anybody to simulate what he brings to the table."
Linehan also writes that PG John Roberson injured his ribs during a fall in the second half and is having trouble breathing. Without Roberson against UT on Saturday, I'm not sure that Texas Tech has much of a chance.
Someone convince me that this program is going to be okay as currently constructed.
Miscellaneous: Rush The Court checks in on the Big 12 . . .

Coaches' Poll: The preseason Big 12 Coaches' poll was released yesterday and the Red Raiders are picked to finish last. LAJ's George Watson thinks that the coaches' rational is flawed:
For a team that truly believes it will be a regional team this season, this will do nothing but motivate them. I can see where the coaches might think this as they see only Chad Bettis returning from a pitching staff with a 6.31 ERA a year ago, but they obviously don’t know how Dan Spencer and his crew recruit. The pitching will be better this year, no doubt.

2010 Pre-Preseason Rankings: Scout.com has incredibly early rankings for the Big 12, and figures that Texas Tech will finish 29th nationally, 3rd in the South and 4th overall:
Will Tommy Tuberville really make sure the offense rolls like it did under Mike Leach? That’s the plan meaning the early question mark will be at quarterback where Taylor Potts and fan-favorite Steven Sheffield will wage a fantastic offseason battle. There are more than enough veterans back on offense to be explosive, while the defense should be solid if a shutdown corner can emerge to replace Jamar Wall and the holes on the defensive front can be filled in right away. Getting Iowa State and Colorado from the North is a nice break, even if those games are on the road, while the Missouri battle is at home. The toughest road game is at Oklahoma, but the second-toughest road trip is at Colorado.
Tuberville, KWash and Damien to Have High Level Meeting . . . Hopefully: The official site posted yesterday that head coach Tommy Tuberville will be in Midland on March 9th and in Lubbock on March 2nd. This is tremendous and I'm encouraging public pressure from the rest of DTN to get get these two to go and detail a full report. March 9th is also my birthday (as is Mike Leach's) and would be a great birthday gift, perhaps the best gift ever.
Glimpse Into Future: LAJ's Karen Michael reported on a luncheon that Tuberville was at yesterday and if you've read the previous recruiting reviews, then you've probably already heard most of this, but I'm hoping that this quote alone produces a tremendous amount of controversy:
"We’ll put a lot of speed on the field," as well as a more aggressive defense, adding the team’s quarterbacks met with him soon after his arrival and asked Tech to run the ball a bit more to help protect them. "We’re going to be a little more balanced on offense."

Seth You have Done it Today
We have multiple controversial issues that should spark a number of posts.
First, Pat Knight has not done it. We have not recruited the number of Big 12 type athletes needed in basketball since Bob Knight took over. To be honest, I am surprised that this occurred because I thought it was a good move at the time. We have made a mistake and it is time for a change in our basketball program. We are not good now and the future does not look good either. I don’t think Gillespie is the change we need either.
Second, I don’t care if we are more balanced, I want us to “Win Baby, Win”.

I can't see a scenario where the AD would replace PK with Gillespie
I think Bobby continues to have a lot of sway regarding the basketball program.
The biggest news of the day is the Midland trip. Can’t wait to hear about Damien’s audience with the Catfish Jesus. Will he kiss the ring? Or, will he wear a Captain Obvious T-shirt?
Will KWash be allowed to sit down?

I’m conflicted on PK…..I’ve actually seen some improvement in his coaching, but why can’t he recruit better with he has. My jealousy of the Baylor program is at it’s peak…..great coach and entertaining style (all this just a few years removed from the lowest point possible).

Seth – You missed the money statement from K. Michael’s report.
At practices, he said all players will look alike, stressing while he doesn’t care how players wear their hair, he does not allow earrings.
No earrings? Come on Tubs! Express youself…. LOL
Wonder how this is going over with the players. That’s a pretty oldschool approach. At least they can wear their hair how they want. Always wondered how someone “wears” their hair.

I was in the elevator of my Hotel when I was in SAN ANTONIO for the Alamo Bowl. I was all smiles after having met Brandon Carter, Shawn Byrnes, and, Chris Olson. I shared this fact with a bunch of older folks in the elevator whom I saw wearing Tech gear. Upon hearing me tell the story, one old lady asked, “is that the young man with the face paint?”….“Yes”, I smiled back.

I though it was cool too, until BC showed his ass at the end of the season. I noticed that after that point I couldn’t look at his picture without a totally different visceral response. Now I’m just glad he’s gone.

Literally or figuratively?
I remember some of things he said about Leach right after the Alamo Bowl that rubbed people the wrong way.
Later I read another article which allowed him to elaborate about his views on the Leach incident which I thought were pretty thoughful.
On a side note, I thought it was inappropriate/distasteful for the media and the administration to try and elicit the players, who are totally not at fault (save one perhaps), and use those words to further sensationalize the mess and promote their agenda.
It wasn’t fair to those kids to put them in a position to make a statement that might potentially put their scholarships at risk. Afterall, it’s even easier to get rid of a player than a coach.
(Or did Carter actually show his ass? If so, how did I miss that?)

really good point
When you consider it, you have a big number of experienced adults (media) pushing the players who are rolling along full of emotions and ready to say whatever about the subject.
It actually makes me appreciate those who didn’t offer any opinions and just rolled with it (Daniel Howard comes to mind). And I appreciate how Batch handled it as well. If you recall, he didn’t choose sides. He simply pointed out that Leach isn’t coming back so we gotta move forward. Would have been easy for him or anyone else to just pile on.

Choices
Daniel told me that if a reporter wanted to do an interview he said fine, but if the reporter ask anything about Coach Leach, the administration, or anything other than the upcoming game, the interview would be terminated. He said that even to his hometown reporter. But if you wanted to talk about Michigan State, ask away. If you noticed the players that had the most to say about the Coaching delima were players that had been in the doghouse, lacked playing time or had lost a starting job at one time or another. Most of those blaming it on the Head man, not their position coach, because the players did not know which coaches would be retained, of which I found hilarious. Too bad they didn’t be the bigger person and not comment about the situation at all and just talk about the task at hand. Squeeky wheels always require the most grease.
This is personal preference thing...
My ideal picture for Tech is a blue collar, shut up and win type program. I never agreed with fostering a “bad boy” image. It’s always been my hope that we find a way to elite status, but do it with class. For that reason, I never enjoyed the face paint. Regardless, it looks like Brandon is poised for a great NFL career, but I bet he does it sans face paint from here on out.

On PK and KC
I’d suggest to Myers that he give PK another year before assessing the men’s basketball program. He is still a young head coach and perhaps the momentum of this year will help in his recruiting.
It’s actually KC that I believe should be on the hot seat for her record in the womens basketball side. The Tech womens basketball progran has fallen off the face of the earth since it’s glory days. Her record when comapred with her tenure is much more suspect than Pat Knight’s record, IMO.

Couldn’t agree more.
Curry was a pretty good coach in a BASKETBALL state where it was easy to recruit, but she’s not worth a damn in a football state.

The funny thing is
I saw a news report today where Gerald Myers and the Aggie Coach ( a Tech alum) both expressed support and admiration for Curry’s recruits of the last two years. And not a word on Knight.
"Faster Horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money." Tom T Hall
I'd be worried about both commenters if I were KC then . . .
As for Myers, if he’s on the way out (i.e. retirement), then his endorsement is . . . well . . . bumpy. Not sure it’s Myers endoresement is worth anything though. Now maybe Hance or Craig James . . . that’s a different deal there. (note: sarcasm)
If it’s the Aggie coach ( nationally ranked -mind you) giving out recruiting compliments, then that’s a problem also. Not for him at A&M, but for us at Tech.
Knight has not recruited well.
I thought he had turned the corner when Roberts, Singletary, and Roberson came in…but the following classes did not show continued improvement…
I got my hopes up with the last group of JC’s but alas, they cannot compete in the Big12 all that well either.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Point taken
but I would still give more slack to the newer of the two coaches.
Curry’s been around as a HC much longer than PK. Also, PK’s program has been getting better (slowly), but Curry’s is looking like a sinking ship. You’re not going to convince me that back to back wins over top 25 teams while having a fooling with a .250 conf. record is improvement.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 17, 2010 3:44 PM CST up reply actions
Curry turned the corner last season
when she stopped recruiting JC’s. What the result of that is…as will happen with the men IMHO, there is now a void between extreme youth and few upper classmen.
Women’s seniors: Jordan Murphree, who has played every position except post it seems, I think much to her expense and a good JC this year Ashlee Roberson.
Juniors: Wickett, a transfer who has not seen the court…she has played two years, so she has two left.
The rest are So’s, including one transfer, rsfr, and fr. This is the group carrying the depth of the team. Of course they are not going to win. The majority of the pt in this group is going to true freshmen.
The next class, the one’s in hs, looks very good as well.
The win / losses do not show it, but the program has turned the corner…if recruiting is a major element.
I am not talking about slack for a coach, this is the state of the program…and will be the state regardless of the coach. I think it is going to improve if the recruiting continues as good as this year’s class and the freshmen class on the court now.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Hopefully...
you’re right, but you can have all the talent in the world and if the coach can’t bring them together as a team then you won’t have anything (see A&M football).
My mom and dad have had season tickets to the women’s games since I was about 3, and making (atleast) the round of 16 again would be nice. Swoopes, Bolles, Scott, Lake, Hannebut, and the list goes on of the former players that I saw first hand make this program into one of the elite programs in the nation. Now look what Curry did when she got the keys to the Ferrari (well, maybe Corvette by the time she got them).

PK, Bob Knight and Myers
I’m with you regarding the program. As Oldschool mentioned, Baylor was at rock bottom a few years back and their program seemed out of control. Now look at them.
The concerning part to me is (unlike football) it doesn’t take a lot of time to turn around a basketball team.
But bet on this. If it is true Myers is planning to retire, there will NOT be any coaching changes until we have a new AD in place. His relationship with Bob Knight is too tight to make any moves with PK prior to retirement.
Frankly, I think that is for the best. I don’t trust his judgement and it is better to let the new AD make decisions on the program going forward.
Honestly, I trust the future AD more than Myers and I have no idea who this person is yet.

I’m not ready to kick Pat Knight to the curb just yet. I would say he gets at least another season. Personally, I like him and think he has a strong work ethic but is still a very young coach when making decisions. Tech always has one or two players that are the team and that’s sad. We need a team that can play and not just one guy.
I like the fact Scout.com put us 3rd. That means we finish 2nd in the south in my book. I think tech makes some real head way this season with lots of variation in the offense and defense.
“A more balanced offense”… calm down and don’t panic. A balanced offense can mean a lot of things and doesn’t mean pass 50% run 50%. The balance may be the actual player potential and as promised in the stone tablet….the Air Raid will continue. So lets just wait and see before we start twisting verbage.
Lastly, lets get a new AD that’s not a local or ex-coach and has some sound business sense. It would be great to have a Tech alum but not crucial.

I noticed Scout ranks Mizzou right behind us, both in B-12 and nationally. And they say CO will be our 2nd toughest road game. Is it just me? The north teams haven’t shown me squat lately with the exception of NU’s late season revival last year.
I don’t know enough about BBall to say much, but it is remarkable what Baylor has done on a small budget in a short period of time. Maybe it’s the big-city, party atmosphere that draws the talent.

I think they listed CO as one of tougher games marking our history against them. Not sure why CO seems to always beat us but they do. I agree with you as the north has yet to impress me with anything football related. I think NU is getting better but I would say they are still 2 years away from really being good. Mizzou is another one that has our number but I don’t see them beating us in Lubbock.

Texas Tech would be wise to hire Coach Gilliespie if it wants to have a winning basketball program. Anyone who could turn around UTEP from where its program had been (less than ten wins and one real Division one player) and make the NCAAs in two years, is a special coach. UTEP fans would like to have him back even though Coach Barbee is a great recruiter and has UTEP poised to win Conference USA (blah, I know). Gillespie’s roots are in Texas and he should never have left Texas A&M, which was the perfect spot for an ex-HS coach from Texas to be. Gillespie would be a perfect fit for Tech except for one thing; he’s single, drinks and likes women (plural). His lifestyle would never be acceptable to a large portion of Tech’s fans and Tech’s administration. Tech would rather be a loser with a good ol’ boy coach. Texas Tech will get its wish.
He may not fit in with the Tech fans and admin, but
it sure sounds like he would fit in with the crew here at DTN.

If I have an employee who’s a producer I don’t care if he’s snorting lines off an exotic dancers chest till 4 a.m. as long as he makes the 8:00 a.m. meeting and complies with company standards while in the office.
This might not be a perfect analogy as said employee would be a public figure but I must say Auggie’s issues with drinking and driving while embarrassing at the time (all of one week) haven’t really derailed the Longhorn Baseball title train.
In summary – Hire Gillespie, like Tubs this guy has seen what taking the dream job can do to your career. If we landed this guy we would have him for as long as we want him.
It's the Michael Irvin paradigm...
who was actually snorting lines of exotic dancers until 4 am, and showed up at practice yelling at anyone who dared to call him on it – “who’s gonna outwork me today”, and then proceed to outwork the entire team. I like guys like this too, with the understanding that there’s gonna be a nasty flameout at some point, so your betting on winning soon and hoping for a few good years before the inevitable.

Ha! Nice analogy.
Had not thought of it that way.

and he has an ear ring

Big earings at that!
I could pay off my house with those things.

Then Michael Irvin could NOT play for Catfish Jesus
by raider realist on Feb 17, 2010 4:13 PM CST up reply actions
why would he want to?
Irvin was a receiver….that means the QB has to throw the ball.

We would have
Him until a better offer comes along. A simple look back at his moves tells you that.

I disagree complelely
It’s not so much about his “personal” life as it is he has shown a serious lack of judgment on multiple occaisions. I can give a guy one time, but MADD statistics say a feller drinks and drives average of 88 times befor getting caught. This guy has been busted at least twice we know of. That shows a selfish person who puts his needs above my family’s need to be safe on the road. If you’re an alcoholic, get a cab or stay home. Don’t get me wrong, I love beer, but I don’t have one sip before I figure who’s driving and if that’s me, it stops at 24 ounces. That being said, I’d hire him to coach Tech, after all, they have a private bus driver and pilot.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!

Midland Lunch
A couple of us are thinking about getting a table at the lunch. Would love to meet more of the Midland DTN group if your going.
As soon as I know what our schedule changes are at work I'll let you know.

Then I read this again.....
“We’ll put a lot of speed on the field,” as well as a more aggressive defense, adding the team’s quarterbacks met with him soon after his arrival and asked Tech to run the ball a bit more to help protect them. “We’re going to be a little more balanced on offense.”
and I ask myself, why would an accomplished coach take the advice of two or three quarterbacks on running the ball more when they came to this universtiiy to throw the ball in the first place. Sounds a little fishy to me…..could it be that tt is going to change and blame it on the kids. Just does not sound right to me………

Oh come on blackbeard
That would never happen. Every young QB dreams of the big game filled with hand-offs and pitches. I bet Sheffield goes to sleep every night with visions of handing the ball off for the winning TD in the ever elusive Big 12 championship game.

then why bring it up?
Why say the qbs wanted it? Why not “own the decision”?

He seems to have a political mind
and knows that it’s a pretty touchy subject in Lubbock. Now, if fan-favorite Steven Sheffield asked for it, well, all is good. Sticks doesn’t want all those touchdown passes shown on SportsCenter anyway…

RE Tubs' Comment
I don’t want to read too much into Tubs’ comments, but. . .
a) have we been playing/recruiting the slow guys on D the whole time? Was that our problem?
b) if the QBs wanted to run more, wasn’t that pretty much their decision to make during games anyway? I thought as the 2009 season progressed, and Potts/Sticks improved during the year, they were checking down to the run far more often than earlier in the year anyway (I haven’t seen the stats to back that impression up)
I realize Tubbs’ comments were made in a PR event, and I’m sure what Tubs is saying is not code for “3 yards and a cloud of dust.” Nor do I believe that the comments were meant to be a dig at Leach.
So, I’m giving him a pass.
But since you mentioned it. . .

It was odd for him to bring up that QB conversation.
Not sure what purpose it served, and could make the QBs look weak. Seems like something you keep in house unless you have an agenda to serve. I can’t tell what that would be.

same can be said
About the ear rings. He blames it on the players. Wtf?

Recruiting- Basketball
The best players we have had at Tech since the arrival of the mighty Coach Knight were those recruited by James Dickey. We have had no one to even compare to the athletes that Dickey had. My guess is the problem was that the athletes didn’t just show up and want to play for his majesty. (If that tells you that I am not a fan of the knight family, your right). If your going to have a great program in Lubbock you going to have to be gone a lot traveling the state. In a conversation I had with former head football coach Jim Carlen, he said that on Thursdays he took the team through their paces and the coaches hit the road to recruit. You’ll notice that TT hires recruiters to coach his players. We have a chance to get to the next level with TT. Answer, how come we have to have loyalty to a coach who has never had a winning program anywhere? This is a Gerald thing. Pk needs to go and we need to give this opportunity to a good coach who has proven he knows how to win. Do I need to point out the succes that Baylor has had with their coaching picks. It kills me to watch BB play against better athletes and just get hammered and we get all disappointed that we didn’t win. Hey, these guys are trying, but we can’t match up.

I don't have a great arguement against
Your stance…..but I don’t want Gerald hiring the next coach and I would have to have a stud coach picked out that I know I could hire.

Seth,
We’re getting tickets tomorrow. I’m going to this shin-dig come hell or high water. Any questions you guys want asked, let me know.

Talk to Neal Brown and ask him for the
1,000th time if the offense is going to change. He’ll tell you that the offense isn’t going to change and then you tell him that you’ve heard that the passing offense that we’ve come to know and love is not long for this world. He’ll then tell you that it’s not going to change and he wants to utilize the run a little more and then stand up and point your finger at him and say “LIAR!”
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Then, as a way to finish it off
throw some papers in the air, kick over a trash can and storm off yelling “this effing interview is over”
It will thoroughly confuse everyone in the room. That’s the way I always exit.
