TUBERVILLE INTERVIEW: "Scotty Young may play Football and Baseball for Tech".
Coach Tuberville was interviewed this morning on 104.3 and stated that he has met with Tech's Baseball Staff to discuss the possibilty of Scotty Young playing both sports.
Also mentioned in the interview was the fact the the entire football weight room is being completly re-done. The focus going forward will be on free-weights and power lifts, and most equipment will be replaced.
Coach also provided some personal tid bits such as his favorite Lubbock eatery thus far is Cagels Steak House, his favorite movies are westerns, and his favorite music is country and western. This is fitting because according to coach Tuberville his best friend is the former head of Sony Music Nashville. Along those lines, Coach Tuberville mentioned he is working with those contacts to arrange some exciting appearances for the singing of the National Anthem.
On the football front, the only signifigant quote from coach was, "we are not here to fix anything, but we are here to improve it. If there wasn't any room for improvement, we would have a championship."

As Julie would say on the Mod Squad, "Link!"
Solid, man.
Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.
Got no linky...
was taking notes on the way to the office this morning, listening first hand. Sorry, I promise to do better next time.

No problem - Just happy to throw out a Mod Squad reference
A show that aired 40 years ago. How old do you have to be to even have a clue who Julie & Link are? Obviously older than dirt, like myself.

Sergio and "texting"
If he was just texting, then why did he flee the scene?
Not that it really matters since he’s a star player and Dirtbag would have pulled the strings to keep him out of trouble…

My Point
Case Closed
"Faster Horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money." Tom T Hall
I bet he's talented enough
but i dont want scotty to injure himself playing baseball. This kid is gonna be a stud in the future.
It does mean
He probably will not start for at least 2 years. That is fine because we have a excellent depth at the position.
"Faster Horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money." Tom T Hall
Not a good sign
If Scotty is half as good of a pitching prospect as he is a QB we may be in trouble. Lets see if any MLB clubs draft him and waive some crazy money in front of him. He may never play for us, which I hope does not happen. But consider Billy Joe Tolliver has had the longest NFL QB career of any former Tech signal caller. Billy had a rocket arm as well and was a damn good pitcher. My point being that if Scotty wants a PRO career, MLB might be his best shot at making some serious coin and none of Leachs spread offense QBs panned out in the NFL. Maybe Rylan Reed could talk with Scotty about the pros & cons of his decision to play both sports.

He was supposed to enter the draft this year from what I understand.

Without Questions; There are limited Resources...
Serious question
The focus going forward will be on free-weights and power lifts, and most equipment will be replaced.
Will free-weights and power lifts help build speed? Not being a smart-ass, really asking if someone knows.
Here is the smart-ass question:
What are they gonna do with all those Nautilus machines and Nordic-Tracs?

My barber asked me the same question today....
He heard the interview as well, and when discussed what would happened to what has to be over $100k in machines. Maybe Frenship Football gets it since Tub’s sons now go there?
As for the conditioning question, Tubs did elaborate and said something about focusing on “core strength” and “lower body strength”. Makes sense to me that those things would aid in speed. Bottom line, I don’t think Tubs has a clue why they are making the change, I think he is just trying to regergitate what his S&C Coach told him.

Whatever the expense comes too, I think Craig James should foot the bill
It’s the least he can do for the program after it was completely changed to his specs.
Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.
His specs probably include more playing time for Adam than he is going to get.

Dogs can talk, Tech is still a perennial stepchild because we can’t handle success without someone having to whip it out and prove theirs is longer. Everyone will have their own aggie secretary like me. ( sorry, “assistant”)
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Free-weights and power lifts
definitely help in speed. The stronger you get those hams and butt, the more force you push off with when running, and calves of course. If we focus heavily on power cleans, be ready to see a damn good o-line too.
Free weights also force your body to strengthen stabilizer muscles…not sure how that helps with speed, but they probably know MUCH more about this than I do. My info comes from an exercise physiologist I work with.
Did we hire

Tubs has been everywhere!
Tech has been slutting out the new ball coach every chance it gets….its like night and day between the booster public appearances Leach used to make (extremely rare) and what Tubs is currently doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of Tubs booster appearances has already exceeded that of the Captain. This maybe not a bad thing, either….I was reading that tickets to sit at the “Tub’s Table” at the Midland luncheon next month cost $2,500. Stuff like this can really raise a lot for the program. Big money donors are more likely to spend when they feel like they’re connected to the coach and an “insider” with the program.
He is being pimped out...
I just saw where is going to be on the radio in South Florida this week as well. No reason for that but recruiting, hope it works.

Don't forget....
Tubs started his career at “The U”…spent 8 years there and won three national championships. Its been a while, but I’m sure he still has connections….
It was recruiting saavy that brought Miami to prominence…recruiting inner city kids that no one else wanted.
Just saying….
This is what a true D-1 coach does.
And one reason Leach was never that big of a candidate for any bigger jobs than Tech. Loved Leach as our coach, but big schools require much more than just coaching on the field. I think Tubs presence will lead to better recruiting also.

Nope
Championship. We were two games away from one two years ago, but not a soul expected it would happen & it didn’t happen. Tech has never been close before that year. Why would a good old boy southern coach know the magic formula to move Texas Tech football from point B where it is today to the mythical point A he is talking about? Texas A&M has been through 3 saviors since R.C Slocum left, all of them southern good old boys who were going to bring back old fashioned football to College Station & let them compete for championships. Fat lotta good it did them over the last decade.
All I’m asking is for some realistic discussion of where the Tech Football program is today & what it might take to improve it. And realism requires admitting the talent gap between what he is inheriting and what the three and now four wealthier programs in the Big 12 South have to play with. And how he plans to close that recruiting gap. Talk of a Championship is snake oil peddling at this point in the program’s development. Get real Coach. Why don’t you start with a winning season first. Then we’ll talk.
Now it probably doesn’t help matters that I’ve always hated salesmen. They set my teeth on edge. But they do move product so others see them differently.
Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.
So...
you don’t think that even with the players we have coming back that we can have a winning season next year?
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 18, 2010 4:49 PM CST up reply actions
DTN, you heard it hear first...
If your football coach makes an effort to promote your program and raise money, it is a bad thing.
If your football coach sets his goal as winning championships, and does so publicly, it is a bad thing.
Nevermind that your coach actually HAS won championships as a coach, and has gone undefeated.
Nevermind that Coach Leach, when asked during a fund raising event prior to the 2008 season if not winning the Big 12 would be a disapointment, he answered “not winning the national championship would be a disappointment.” Weird thing is, no one called him a snake oil salesman for that comment.

Not as much as I feel....
like I’m on one of those cool “crew” rowing crews, paddling towards the finish line….only this one asshole is facing the wrong one way in the boat. I’m yelling at him, the guy up front with the megaphone is yelling at him……but it’s cool, as soon as we get him back on board we are set.

To be clear, mbrown is not an asshole. It's a metaphor.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
Tubs can not only whisper "championship,"
….he can scream it through the PA at Jones Stadium if he wants. He has three NCs. No one from Tech has anything close.
Word
I guess to state your goal of winning the conference title is just a bad idea. Lets just keep low balling ourselves because “Were Texas Tech”. I dont know about you guys….but i do love me some hardware to look at in the trophy case. Our boys got it in them to win us a title.
