Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.19.10

Lonnie Dean "Primo" McCurry RIP: Per the LAJ, McCurry passed away on Wednesday and played on the 1939 football team that went 9-1-1 and McCurry also spoke to the 2008 Texas Tech football team before the Texas game:
Lonnie was invited by Coach Mike Leach to give the 2008 football team a motivational speech before the biggest game in Tech history. As Tech defeated the University of Texas, the players and coaches felt Primo's inspirational words were a key factor in the upset.
McCurry also served his country in World War II and had a loving wife that passed away only a few weeks ago. Rest in peace sir.
Sarcasm Alert: This mornings DTN DD is riddled with sarcasm in certain places. I have chosen not to utilize the sarcasm font [<sarc>enter text here</sarc>] but instead thought it would be more fun for you to guess where I'm being sarcastic, or maybe I'm not being sarcastic at all.

Opening Day: It should be absolutely beautiful for opening day. If you don't have a thing to do today, go see today's games. P Chad Bettis is your starting pitcher for the year, a position he certainly deserves, and he was recently named to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Watch List. Congrats!
New Role for Bettis: LAJ's George Watson talks with P Chad Bettis who will be making the change from dominant relief pitcher to starting pitcher this year:
"I think starting this year is what I want to do, for sure," Bettis said. "I have to prove myself and prove to everyone else by starting that I can come out and go eight or nine innings and then hand it to (new closer Jay Johnson) to get the win. Closing you have to come in with the mentality of having to get the first guy out and role from there. Starting you control how fast the pace of the game goes and all that."
High Hopes: DT's Adam Coleman writes that the team has high hopes for this season and the team will be leaning on Seward County C.C. pitcher Bobby Doran to fill a starting role this year:
"I expect to step into a role where I can be a dominant pitcher in the Big 12," he said. "Coming here, really filling in behind Chad. Not just let him be the lone soldier out there competing. We have talent on the mound. We’re just going to go out there and compete and do what we do best."
Blaspehmy! DT's Brett Wingarner (this video is really well done, as is almost everything the DT sports department puts out there) talks with P Chad Bettis and head coach Dan Spencer about this upcoming season. I title this section "Blasphemy!" because head coach Dan Spencer has the audacity to talk about wanting to go to Omaha and win a national championship. How dare he have such lofty goals!

Game Tomorrow
Texas Longhorns (20-6, 6-5) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-9, 4-7)
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Lubbock, TX
Television: ESPN
DTN Preview Tomorrow: 8:00 a.m. :: Open Game Day Thread: 12:00 p.m.
Needing Victory: DT's Mike Graham writes that the men's basketball team needs a victory at home this Saturday against a slumping Texas Longhorn team. SF Mike Singletary talk about what the team needs to do tomorrow:
"Any time you can catch a team on a little losing skid, it’s kind of a good thing," he said. "But we know they’re going to come in here ready to play, they always do. So we’ve just got to be ready for them, play defense and do the things the coaches want us to do."
And PF Darko Cohadarevic says that the team played well the last time these teams met (without Darko who was suspended for the game and PF D`Walyn Roberts who was injured) and should try to accomplish the same goals:
"We’ve got to have pretty much the same game plan we had in Austin," he said. "We saw they had a hard time guarding our motion offense, but we know we can’t post up much against their big men."

Uninformed Blogger Agrees with Homers: ESPN's Heather Dinich (who is helping pick up the the slack after Tim Griffin's departure), who normally writes about the ACC, writes that she believes that the Texas Tech offense will essentially remain the same:
More balanced at Texas Tech doesn't mean the Red Raiders' offense will suddenly become a 50-50 split. More like Texas Tech will still look like Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders do have the personnel, though, to add a few extra carries per game. And they certainly could afford to. Last year, Texas Tech was 115th in the country in rushing offense, averaging 84 yards per game. They were No. 2 in the country in passing offense, at 386.77 yards per game. The Red Raiders averaged 24.5 carries per game compared to 51.5 pass attempts per game. You can expect a slight shift in those numbers, but not a dramatic change.
Don't you see? Even Dinich knows that the offense is going to remain the same and she just started blogging about Texas Tech this week. Everyone needs to relax.
Photo Ops: This is unacceptable. It's been well chronicled that head coach Tommy Tuberville is out meeting people, talking about championships (Tubs should know better than to have goals and aspirations, i.e. see comment about baseball head coach Dan Spencer), shaking hands, and meeting with alumni. For shame.
With that being said, there are a couple of photo galleries on the official site, which includes some photos of Tubs (that honestly make me giggle) in and around the Texas Tech campus, as well as Tubs and some of his staff (which includes Sonny Cumbie and another assistant coach that I don't initially recognize) meeting with a local fire station. Also there's a photo gallery of some of pre-spring workouts.
My initial impressions: Everyone's pants are too long except for S&CC Joe Walker; RB coach Chad Scott looks like he's 12; and DC James Willis could whip my rear with one hand tied behind his back.

Nothing will change....
This thought is being shoved down our throats about our offense. I have many thoughts about this, but the bottom line is yes it will. That can be good or bad, but yes…it will change.

The Look
Tuberville looks better in sweats than jeans. I regress. The thing I notice is all the coaches have a focused look. I don’t if this is too much different than before but they look like they are all business. If you don’t perform you go to the shed.

Here is a change !!
In a 75 offensive play game (last two season’s average for TTU=75) going from 33% running (last two years’ average for running plays is 33%) to 40% running (average for Troy’s running plays last two years) = 5 plays per game.
Over the same two years, TTU averaged 40+ points per game, that is well over 6 offensive series per game, implies the increase in running plays = less than one per drive.

Exactly...
what I’ve been thinking. Last year we averaged about 51 pass attempts per game and I’ve said all along that I would put money on us still passing 44-50 times a game.
Watch Troy’s offense and see what we have coming.

Willis
Holy cow. He looks like he could strap on a helmet and start playing again tomorrow.
Prediction = Won’t see much disrespect or back-talk from the defensive players. No one wants to risk getting the wrath of Willis.

Missing Photo Opp
Am I the only one that noticed that Criag and Adam James are not in the photo shoot. Wonder if Tubs allows parents on the field to watch their kids workout.
I know I'm in the miniority but.....
I really like the new professional look for all the coaches. Yes the offense will change some but it also changed under Leach. Hasn’t it been said for a number years that we need to run more? Also where was the jail-break screen last year? How about the inside screen with the wr’s that Glover and others made famous? That’s just a few things I noticed and there are more ways this offense changed in the last few years. Also, I think we could have won @ least the uh game if Batch had gotten the ball 30 times, Ilike everything about the South Plains Drifter. Glad to have someone out there who cares enough to promote TTech football. Wreck’Em Tech
I would argue silent majority.

You guys don't have Tech birthmarks? Weird.
All my buddies and me have birthmarks of the double T or a gun or Raider Red or the Masked Rider or Sheryl Swoopes. Thought everyone had them.

I haven’t checked the butts of all my buddies [he says as he scoots a little farther away from SARR]. ;-)

I take them at their word
I’ve only heard about these things, never seen them. Although, the Swoopes birthmark has me a little curious…

I can do 'em in my sleep.
PowerPoints, charts, graphs, business cases, spreadsheets. I take data and make it look good. Or bad. Depends on what I need to sell.
Watch out for the chart proving SARR is strong like bull. It has to be true if it’s on a chart.

It may have been said for a number of years that we need to run more, but it was said by
UT, aTm, Baylor, OU, OSU,etc.

Change Looks Good
I for one am very glad to see more professionalism within the structure of the team. I am not at all leaning in the direction that Leach did not have control of his team, I believe he most certainly did. He just did it the Pirate way. Coaches do it differently. I like to see the team dressed the same, and setting higher expectations in dress code. But I am old school, so it is just my opinion. Time to settle in on 2010. On the running game, I think Batch is one strong and powerful back. I love the way he runs. I like the idea of getting him the ball 30 times a game, but I am in the Leach camp, short passes are like running plays. Batch in open space when he can either run you over or step left and go right makes him top running back in the Big12. Go Red Raiders.
With Willis, we will win the pre-game handshake 100% of the time. (there are five words in a row with ‘w’…top that!)
LOL
Indeed, willis does look like he can put on the uni and go knock some heads.
Love that line graph btw. XD

5 in a row... that's nothin' for Elmer Fudd...
How about…
With Willis, we will win, we will wreck’em, we will wreck’em Texas Tech!
Since ‘em is not really a word, I’m going to count that as 11 in a row…

Wondering why Willis will win with the group that writes here....
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
The only thing missing from Tub's Lubbock collage....
was him sitting at the UC and a trip to the strip (both outdated references)….kinda cheesy and cool at the same time.
This crowd is pretty smitten with the cut of Willis’s jib…..not that there is anything wrong with that.
Pretty fired up to see how all this looks at the Spring game.

Even before the wife passed, one bedroom was my gun room. She didn’t dare step foot in the Man Cave. Or maybe she was just afraid to.

Probably fear based.
Kinda like my fear of her kitchen. She has more tools than I do and I have no idea what lots of them do.
