Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

In an attempt to make his presentation applicable for all listeners, Neal Brown went over three plays he said were easy to install in any offense from wishbone to spread.

It’s not as if his playbook is Webster’s Dictionary thick to begin with. Speaking Saturday at the 28th annual West Texas Football Clinic, the new Texas Tech offensive coordinator said next year’s Red Raiders might need to know as few as a dozen plays — three or four runs and six to eight pass routes.

"We’re not trying to recreate the wheel,’’ Brown said later. "We’ll decorate those plays up by motioning and doing some things like that, but we’re going to be pretty simple in our approach.’’

As philosophies go, it’s not a radical departure from former Tech coach Mike Leach, who believed in drilling his players in a small package of plays and then running them with ruthless efficiency on fall Saturdays.

Brown and new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville say they’re smart enough not to do away with what worked so well for Leach. Brown told a roomful of coaches at the Holiday Inn Park Plaza that his four-point philosophy includes playing fast, being simple and detail oriented, throwing to set up the run and getting the football to playmakers in space.

Tech coordinator plans to keep it simple, add some new touches | Red Raiders

I plan on writing a lot more about this later in the week, but at the very least, there's a ton of good, interesting quotes from offensive coordinator Neal Brown.

I'm glad he said all that.

That should hold me over till the spring game and then we can make a decision from there.

Sounds good so far....however, once again

Don Williams proves what an idiot he is. For a guy that supposedly watched the Leach teams for 10 years, he sure did not show it.
On a side note: I am glad to see NB not change the philosophy much and it sounds like we won’t Prairie Dog (thank God)

"We’re not trying to recreate the wheel’’

That’s good…no meerkat…emphasis on ball security…keeping it simple…stressing execution…maintaining the line splts… are all good. This philosophy dovetails well with Leach. However…

"We won’t be a huge motion team either,’’ he said, "but we’ll have a wrinkle or two of motion each week. It’s not going to be a deal where we’ll motion every play.. I don’t believe in that either."

I don’t understand, either by Leach or Brown, not using motion as an added dimension to the offense. Tuberville admitted that defenses had to deal with more uncertainty when the offense used more motion. I liked that emphasis.

"we’re going to be pretty simple in our approach.’’ Brown

Perhaps we see a little uptick in momentum

I believe I have said this before. All transitioning outfits look for ways to shorten the learning curve. Proficient execution demands understanding. Understanding breeds calmness of purpose and confidence. The Coaches Tuberville has hired on offense Coach Neal in particular lends itself has to an extremely short learning curve. With Coaches Moore, Cumbie they are the continuity to ensure excellence in execution. By now they- the Coaches have determined what the Spring game is going to address IE they have looked at last year’s film. They know who the projected starters ought to be barring a surprise like A. Torres who out works the knuckle heads like Mr. James, the younger. It likely they now understand how close the Raiders were to getting 10 or 11 wins last year. They know How productive the offense has the potential to be. It’s got to be exciting for group of coaches to come into a mature and practiced system which like a race car which can be fine tuned, not built from the frame up. So Coach Tuberville told the truth same terms, same style of play and probably most importantly the same aggressive initiative seeking outlook on game management. I ask you fellow DTNer’s what’s not to like?

4 WR bunch set?

Im VERY intrested in seeing what that looks like and what kind of plays we can run out of it. Return of the jailbreak screen? And speaking of screens, i bet we will run more screens now that Brown is OC. Coach Brown is taking the right apporach to this. Just another limb on the Mike Leach Coaching tree.

Thats the first time I've seen actual plays from it.

Those 5 or 6 on the site are guaranteed to win you a championship in pop warner league.

I wnated to run this offense

with my flag football team, but gotta have 5 men on line at all times. Ugh. But that offense looks fun as hell to run.

by wrench_raider on Feb 22, 2010 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

sorry

but the A-11 was the dumbest crap ever.

This is still football, you still need 7 men on the LOS at all times, so it wasn’t what it was billed to be, i.e. all 11 players are eligible to receive a pass.

Add in the fact that it didn’t fulfill its intended purpose, i.e. help that high school get further in the playoffs (they still lost in the first round), and you have a non-story that is only kept alive by people who, quite frankly, don’t understand the game.

BTW, at the Pop Warner level, any halfway decent defense would destroy that offense.

by Beergut on Feb 23, 2010 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

That's great Beergut, and I appreciate your comments.

But questioning my understanding of the game is a little over the line.

I don’t understand why innovation of the game always seems “gimmicky” to people. It was cool for what it was. I think kids would enjoy playing that offense. Everybody is eligible to score and have fun.

I don’t really care what would happen at the pop warner level, as long as the kids where having a good time.

Ha ha

So.. how hard was it for you to stay nice there?

by RdrPwr on Feb 23, 2010 6:49 PM CST up reply actions

I thought the "A" in A-11 stood for "Aggie"

And that the concept was to just make everyone eligible so as long as the QB could remember the right color jersey to throw to he had a good chance of tossing it to his own team.

by raider realist on Feb 23, 2010 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

This is just another case like Leach's.

Same damn thing. People can’t appreciate innovation. Narrow-minded fellows.

Brown, about "prairie dog" look
Brown said he won’t use a system that Troy used at times in which all 11 offensive players looked to the sideline at the line of scrimmage.

“We won’t do that here,’’ he said. "The skill guys may, but the O-line won’t.’’

So, they WILL have the “SKILL” guys popping up, but not the O-line. Also:

Tech quarterbacks will be allowed to switch from one play to another at the line of scrimmage, but won’t have the broad latitude that Leach gave them.

So, fewer options for the QB to change out of the called play.

I just hope it works. My main concern through all of this: Can the new regime coach up the QB personnel as well as did Leach? The fact Tech has a couple (Karem and Young) of newbies that need less coaching can surely make the above question a minor concern. With what the new DC brings and will install, being coupled with a smooth transition into the new OC’s schemes, maybe this WILL be anothe steller year. I know the schedule, right now, appears to favor Tech a whole lot. Should this team respond well to the new coordinator’s gameplans, we fans are going to be greatly satisfied with the team’s performance on the field.

1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Sounds like the skill guys may pop up for side line plays...

I guess a question that is not answered is if Tuberville will do a historical and pull the offense after the season starts and switch to another scheme….

Spring Game Invitation

A contingent from Midland and myself are coming up for the sping game to check out all of the new goings on in Raider Land as my 5 year old calls it. I would love it if as many of you guys that can make it up to the game would stop by our tailgait and have a few beers or brawts or brisket or what ever. New T-shirts and all—We will be in the West parking lot with a Double T Nation flag flying high along with all the others. All our Brothers and Sisters are welcome.

I tried to find you at one of the early games last year but got lost in the sea of Tech and pirate flags. Maybe the DTN flag will be a beacon I can follow.

I hate to say,

“I told you so” but, I told you so.

however people will still read this as the death of the Air Raid. I dont. Do I like the fact that the QB and skill players may look back at the sidelines? No. Do I like the fact that the QBs will NOT be given the latitude Leach have his QBs? No. But change was inevitable.

While you may not have wringed your hands and rended your clothes over the fate of our beloved Captain’s offense, many did.

I for one, took Tubbs at his word and believed everything would be fine. All the while others dissected and parsed every syllable for proof that the death of the Air Raid was nigh.
