Texas Tech Depth Chartin' :: The Running Backs

Previously on Texas Tech Depth Chartin' :: The Quarterbacks ::

Tailback

Overall: A true position of strength for this team. Much of this unit's success will depend on the offensive line being able to replace three starters for the second straight year, but we'll get to that at a later point. I cannot recall a time when Texas Tech had, potentially, four 4-star running backs on the team at one given time. Think about that for a minute. Let it sink in. There's some real talent in the backfield, it's going to be interesting to see how this talent is utilized.

Who Is Gone: Same as the quarterbacks, everyone returns, and that's a good thing. There's quite a bit of stability and competition at the running back position and that's something I absolutely love.

Player Ht/Wt Year Probable Role
Baron Batch 5-11/205 SR Starter
Eric Stephens 5-8/182 SO First Backup
Harrison Jeffers 5-9/204 SO Compete for Second Backup
Delans Griffin 5-11/180 FR Redshirt

Who Is Still Around: Baron Batch: This one is pretty easy. I don't think there's any question that Batch is the unquestioned starter this year. Batch will be one of this team's most important offensive performers in 2010 and if Brown increases the carries from 30% to 40% then Batch's potential impact on this team will be even greater. In fact, one of the things that will be interesting is whether or not Batch will top 1,000 yards on the ground this year. In 2009, Batch accounted for 16.9% of this team's all-purpose yards. There's a lot of yards to go around, and I can't shake the fact that I truly believe that this team's success will be largely dependent on Batch's ability to churn out positive yards on the ground.

Eric Stephens: I'll be honest, I was shocked when Stephens forced his way onto the field in 2009 and pleasantly surprised. The biggest issue that Stephens must improve his putting the ball on the turf too often. Other than that flaw, I think Stephens have tremendous potential to be a very good running back for Texas Tech. I don't want this to sound like a knock, because it's not intended to be, but Stephens isn't great at any particular dimension of his game, but he's just really solid. He's not a burner, but he's plenty fast, he's not big, but he's not small, he runs hard, but he's not going to run over people, etc. I'd also be remiss in not stating that I think the battle between Stephens and Jeffers will be incredibly close and right now, I think Stephens is ahead of Jeffers, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Jeffers make a move in the spring.

Harrison Jeffers: I earnestly believe that Leach loved what Jeffers brought to the table in terms of game-breaking speed. I have no issues in stating that no one gets to the corner quicker than Jeffers and if forced to choose one player that could break a game wide open, it would be Jeffers. With all of that being said, I think there's a reason why Jeffers was behind Stephens in the running back competition and he only received 35 carries in 2009 despite absolutely destroying the scout team as a true freshman. Jeffers was in Leach's doghouse for whatever reason, but now he has an opportunity to impress a new coaching staff. I wholeheartedly believe that there's room for this team to have three outstanding running backs and I get the feeling that it's now up to Jeffers to prove that he belongs.

Delans Griffin:  Griffin is another game-breaking sort of player.  The same type of player mentioned above.  Griffin has the ability to break long runs, is a legitimate 4.5 running back and is already adept at catching the ball out of the backfield, i.e. he's a spread running back and I that's a compliment.  He's not going to run over you, at least he didn't in high school, he merely ran past you.  That's probably going to be Griffin's biggest adjustment, is just learning how to lower his head and grind out yards.  Griffin may be a possible grad-risk, so just keep that in mind if he doesn't hit campus in the summer.  We might get to see Tuberville's ability to send players to a JUCO to then return upon getting their grades in order.

Fullback

Overall: There's going to be quite a bit of guess-work until the spring practices start. So I've decided to take absolute and utter guesses about the fullback position, and of course there's also the question if there will even be a fullback. Honestly, I have no idea, but I can say that I thought that Acevedo did an okay job last year at the position, despite the fact that he wasn't utilized that often offensively, but I think that a team player like Acevedo has utility with this team.

Who Is Gone: After the departure of Ryan Hale in 2008, Leach shied away from the fullback position. Acevedo didn't see very many snaps at the fullback spot, and that meant that the jumbo package that Leach ran in 2008, which featured Hale at fullback and Adam James at tight end, faded away in 2009. It will be interesting to see if Brown resurrects this position and who might fill this spot.

Player Ht/Wt Year Probable Role
Gerardo Acevedo 6-1/197 SR Starter
Aaron Crawford 5-11/204 JR Pure Speculation
Andre McCorkle 6-2/204 JR Pure Speculation

Who Is Still Around: Gerardo Acevedo: As stated above, it's going to be interesting to see if and how Brown utilizes the fullback. Acevedo should at the very least be capable of handling the spot opportunity, but I'm not sure that Brown is will implement a full-time running back in that fullback spot. I'm thinking that this may be a situation where if there are some goal line opportunities then maybe he gets a look.

Aaron Crawford: Again, this is pure speculation. For those of you who have been around for a while, you'll know that I have an appreciation for Crawford, who played as a true freshman while Shannon Woods was working his way out of the doghouse. And I'd be remiss in now stating that I thought Crawford was instrumental against Oklahoma in 2007 in getting that win. Crawford should have a place on this team, and maybe it's as a fullback that has quite a bit of running ability. I'm not sold that Crawford has the ability to be a game-breaker as a tailback, but he's a tough runner, and maybe he finds his place as a fullback in some form or fashion.

Andre McCorkle: I know nothing about McCorkle other than he is a transfer from Texas State, initially started out as a running back after transferring to Texas Tech (I think), and then was moved to a defensive back position. With McCorkle, you have a player that could probably add on a few pounds and be a pretty effective fullback if needed. I have no idea what type of runner he actually is, and this is a longshot, but I don't know that McCorkle sees the field, especially considering last year's recruiting class and the current crop of defensive backs. It's going to get crowded pretty quickly and McCorkle may do well to find a spot where he can actually get some burn.

Hopefully without re-igniting the ‘end of Air Raid’ debate, one thing that bothered me last year was that we had a stable full of good backs that didn’t get utilized very much. I look forward to an increase in the running game, if for no other reason than to keep the defense honest, i.e. keep them from immediately dropping back and flooding the mid-range passing routes.

How can you make a comment like that...

without expecting to ignite the Air Raid debate?

Also...

The Air Raid doesn’t use the running game to keep the pass defense honest… it used screens and draws, and to great effect.

Taking plays away from the qb and giving them to the rb will not help our O.

Could you please explain how taking plays away from the QB and giving them to the RB is not going to help our offense?

Just curious…..

Obviously on this team it will help b/c possibly our 3 best playmakers on Offense are RB’s. So you put the ball in your playmakers hands.

Aaron Crawford

I really surprised that he is still here, I actually forgot he was still around. Not that I don’t like him I just keep seeing him get passed on the depth chart. Hopefully he can find a spot on the team in some capacity.

uh, I mean welcome mattyred80.

Crawford seems like he may have slowed down a bit, however, he could turn out ot be the blocking back we may need from time to time. For me the premier is Batch of course, but next for me is Jeffers….that kid has moves.

Running backs - we have some

In keeping with general hand ringing theme that the Raiders run game is likely to be at least 4 out of 10 plays in 2010. So the sky is falling. That being said it’s likely that the RB position is going to be effective in 2010 for all the reasons Seth has cited. It’s a given that this position gets the most touches barring the QB. The key would seem to be effectiveness on first or second down. If the rush gains 4- 5 yard on either of those downs then the play selection pass or run again would seem to be that much easier. The quality of the current crop of running backs makes most of us giddy. I for one would be thrilled to see a 1000 yard rusher on the Tech Roster. As far as game management the goal would seem to be gaining over 100 yard per contest but more importantly getting those first downs – when in third and short or the red zone conversions literally becoming routine. Couple folks have already said "well if the Raiders line up and try to out muscle the big boys on the line of scrimmage i.e. Ou, ut and aTm – possibly Nebraska (if we get to the Big 12 C- game).. we’ll lose that fight".. (battledome and Chad0545 – I think) Goes to the argument of doing what they do well which is throw first. Thing is with lots of good backs who doubts the Raiders Offense can’t rush it 25 times out of 75 offensive plays with at least half being considered successful i.e. gaining more than 5 yards. Perhaps a third of the rushing attempts being successful at those 3rd and inches situations. I’m pretty sure we won’t see a go for it on 4th down up tick. So I just left that stat out. The O line quotient has the real possibility to be very good. Expected starters are: McDaniel, Okafor ,Waddle, Keowen and Olson. Question becomes in a Neal Brown offense – do they telegraph a run by putting their hand on the ground ? Or stay in the "traditional " 2 point stance we have all been used to seeing. Guess what I’m curious about is how does this look when it starts to be practiced in the Spring game.
Since we have pick who starts at this position my pick is very predictable – Batch the senior. But It wouldn’t surprise me to see Crawford or Jeffers get the 2nd position in a 2 x back set or even a relative unknown become a blocking beast. Talk about breaking tendencies a run blocking back at Tech?
If it’s throwing situation its Stephens paired with Batch. Speed Baby, speed.

Is running more going to be more effective?

Truth is I don’t have a clue. It makes sense, and until it doesn’t I remain optomistic, but I also refrain from setting the expectation that it will for certain. I essentially envision opponents sitting on the pass as they do now, but us zagging by running more to call that bluff. Leach set up the run with the pass, but the pass worked so well, why bother to finish the equation? I would like to finish the equation more often, and I hope that small change will further hone our version of the spread.

The QB finishes the equation

Almost all plays during the last 10 years had a check down to a running play and the QB made the call. The QB could have checked to a run 10-15 more times per game if it was there (see Kansas ’09, Kansas ’04, Graham Harrell). Does anyone remember the 22 point comeback in Lawrence ’04 led by Taurean and the running game? Awesome game.

I’m not too bent out of shape about running more next year. In fact, I think it makes sense considering the talent.

Just wanted to point out the checks.

Checks noted.

I wonder if there will be more check downs now that the QB will be getting info from the sideline? Regardless, i think what we are talking about is more “designed” run plays be called. If we continue to pass 60% of the time, defenses will have to continue to sit on the pass. I want to see us run more often when scouting might dictate a passing situation. Essentially we have been succesful at saying “we are going to pass it, stop us”. Now I want to try, “we are going to pass it…….or.are.we?”

We have a good line up of rb's

I don’t doubt they are the best group, as a group, in the last 10 years…maybe the last five even. There are more good ones on campus than I can remember.

For a back to gain 1000 yards in a 13 game season, with 5.5 yards per carry, he needs 14 of those per game…I don’t know one way or the other if that is realistic or not, Batch was about 115 yards net of that last season as a runner. I would value more a higher 3rd down % and a higher 4th down % over a rb who gains 1000 yards. Point being we may have a very effective rb who averages 2 – 3 yards per carry if those yards were more in 3rd and 2 or 3, or 4th and 2 or 3 situations. First downs keep drives alive.

Speaking to Stephens’ and perhaps even Jeffer’s physical play versus Batch’s, Batch was not that physical when he cam out of hs, it was after his injury and recovery that he started seeing that he could be so physically effective.

Like any other offense, first downs must be effective (run or pass).

Our backs are of reasonable size /- 200, but to expect them to get 5 per carry – on every carry is a stretch. Our big gains last year were when the LBs bailed or when we got the RB in space on the corners.

Sigh…..as long as we keep it exciting.

Blackbeard, I can't grasp what you are saying with 'effective' first downs...

I don’t expect any back’s average numbers to be extrapolated conceptually to each play.

I'm saying if

we pass, we better catch the ball and gain at least 5
if we run, we better gain 5 on first down
I would prefer we pass on first down. that’s all

Its not the running game but the touches

It would be great to see Batch get 1,000 yards next season, but I am more concerend about the All Purpose Yards that Batch gets. I know all of you have seen Batch run, but when he gets the ball and has a little space, he is one tough hombre. I think the running back position is loaded, and I can’t wait to see how new OC Brown gets that ball in their hands. Leach’s offense has always been about the quick strike. Just the idea that Texas has to worr about the rush makes me feel good, and I am sure that Texas DC read where QB draw will be in play next season. Hell if the QB can run, we may score on every possession. It all about getting the ball into space in those wide splits. Go Red Raiders.

Jeffers needs 10 touches a game at least next year. He is our most explosive player. By far. I’m basing this on the 3 touches a game he got last year on that crappy montion run around the end. He didn’t ever get anywhere b/c it was the only play he ran and the defense knew it was coming, but man he is fast. And quick. The guy is good. Give him the ball.

Just checking Seth but wasn’t Ryan Hale a senior this year 2009? I swear I saw him play 2 quite bit on Extra Points, punt coverage etc. # 5 right?
