Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.23.10

Game Tonight
Kansas St. Wildcats (22-4, 9-3) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-10, 4-8)
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Lubbock, TX
Television: Big 12 Network : ESPN 360
DTN Preview: 11:00 a.m. :: Open Game Day Thread: 6:00 p.m.
Needing a Win: DT's Mike Graham writes that the Red Raiders need a win, and this couldn't be a more true statement. PG John Roberson says that the team is not worried about the consequences of a win or loss, but just focusing on tonight's game:
"We’re not thinking about the (implications) right know," Roberson said. "It’s a real big game for us, but we’re only concerned about winning."
And head coach Pat Knight (I'm sure he was probably asked about whether or not he would want to be part of the NIT, although I would assume that he's prefer to be part of the NCAA Tournament) thinks that the NIT would be a good step for the program:
"To go to the NIT would be great," Pat said. "We haven’t been to the postseason in two years. You see what the NIT did for Baylor. I think if you ask (Baylor coach) Scott (Drew), because he had a lot of good guys returning, adding some good guys like we’re going to have in the same situation for next year. He got a lot of really good games in the NIT, you get the TV exposure being on ESPN. It would be a great honor for these guys."
Like Peas and Carrots: LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that PG John Roberson and SF Mike Singletary have played so long together that they can read each others' thoughts on the court:
"He knows the way I think, and I know how he thinks in certain situations," Singletary said. "That’s why we work well together. And we don’t get tired of each other."
Snip.
"With me and Mike, it’s just because we’re around each other so much," Roberson said. "I know exactly what he’s going to do on the court."

New Mexico Game Canceled: Per the official site, today's scheduled game against New Mexico has been postponed due to inclement weather. The Red Raiders will get back playing games for a weekend tournament, the Brooks Wallace Baseball Classic with Bethune-Cookman and Washington St. heading to Lubbock.
Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week: Congrats to Chad Bettis who was named as the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week for his work on Friday night:
Chad Bettis, Texas Tech, RHP, Jr., 6-1, 211, Lubbock, Texas/Monterey
Bettis retired the first 13 Gamecock batters that he faced in Tech's season opener against Jacksonville State. He went on to log seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and struck out four. Bettis faced 25 batters in the contest.
DT's Adam Coleman writes that C Jeremy Mayo thinks that Bettis' performance on Friday was expected:
Bettis gave credit to Mayo for the performance, but Mayo said these types of performances from the junior should come as no surprise.
"It’s what’s expected," he said Friday. "That’s what I expect out of him. That’s what the team expects out of him.
"When he comes out and sets the tone like that, it puts everybody’s confidence above normal and everybody just starts playing and then we run off eight runs and we just keep rolling."

Who Wants to Pay More for Tickets? This is Going to Go Over Extremely Well: LAJ's Don Williams reports that the athletic department felt that it would be totally appropriate to increase ticket prices. Here's Craig Wells, the athletic department chief of staff to explain:
"Facilities, salaries for coaches, staffs, everybody — all those expenses have gone up,’’ Wells said. "For us to (be competitive), we have to take advantage of where we have a chance to increase revenues, and football tickets is one of those places.
"We realize there’s a point to where you just can’t go higher anymore. We are hoping that we’re not to that point. What we hope is that the increase is small enough that everybody will understand that all we’re trying to do is stay competitive.’’
Wells forgot to include settlements for lawsuits to that list of expenses that have gone up.
I'm sure the jokes and/or comments will write themselves this morning so please enjoy yourselves in the comments. Here's where your prices are going up:

Two Star All-Star Team: SI's Andy Staples compiles an All-American team consisting of zero to two star players out of high school and your very own Alexander Torres made the list:
WR Alex Torres, So., Texas Tech (zero stars): Torres originally enrolled at the Air Force Academy, but a broken hand suffered after a fall on a training run in 2007 left him unable to complete basic training. Instead of returning to Colorado Springs in 2008, the former El Paso, Texas, high school star went to Lubbock and walked on to the football team. In 2009, Torres led the Red Raiders in catches with 67 for 806 yards and six touchdowns.

Raising the price of tickets again?
We’re not in a recession are we boys? Nah, hike em up, I wipe my ass with $100……
Wells needs to be hit in the d*** with a snow shovel. As well as the rest of the administration. This is going to make it terribly difficult to attend a few games this year. Priorities first, I have a drinking habit I need to take care of.

With the new
sections at $149, it is less than $25 per game. That is a great price. Anyone with season tickets last year can move to a less expensive seat this year if the $15-$25 increase in their section is too much.
The new seats may not be as good, but you’re still in the stadium watching the Red Raiders play.
It's the principal of the thing really.....
When you need to buy more than 2-3 seats it becomes somewhat of a b****.

I understand that,
but I have a family of four and the extra $60 for the season is not killer.
The hotel, food, gas bill is still going to be higher than the ticket bill for the games I go too.
You aren't wearing my pants either.
I can stretch the ever living hell out of $60.00, while a lot of people cannot.

Try stretching $1696 for 4 in Sec 119, plus
now having to park in Levelland.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
My pair of 119 seats just went over $1000 including the required seat license
You may want to check your math. 4 seats in 119 will be $2000 and at least $150 to the Red Raider Club.
Parking, travel & lodging expenses extra.

thought so too at first, but
the $100 “donation” (think extorsion) is for up to 4 seats.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
There are two surcharges - the $100 option price
That is added to each seat in the price you are billed, making a total to the ticket office of $499 per seat. The Red Raider Club minimum donation is $150 and that can credit you for the purchace of up to 4 seats. So at a minimum, $499 × 4 + $150 = $2048.

and the paid parking at the USA……will we have to wear ties as well? I’m not sure I can deal with a dress code too.

I don't see why the coaching staff have to dress like extras in the TV show "Mad Men"
It’s not 1962 & Tech is not in Manhattan. We should start a “Cattleman’s Restaurant” tradition of cutting off the tie off anybody walking into Jones Stadium wearing one, coaches included.

indirect quote totally taken out of context from Wells -
also a figment of my imagination…..
" well, members of the board, we have made a series of bad decisions that have left us in a bad position. The only logical thing that we can do is hike the prices on everything possible. I’m also open to taking a Vegas approach on this by charging people to use the restroom. We can charge about $25.00 to use the facilities, per person, per game. If that doesn’t cover it, we can always raise the price of tuition and revoke all scholarships, athletic or academic. There will be a revoking fee that the student will have to pay if and when we take the scholarship away. I say we let marketing come up with a price, but I’m thinking about the cost of one years tuition should cover it. Here is the deal folks, ex Coach Mike Leach is going to rape us and take all of our money. We have to do something……."

Interesting game plan....
they raised prices last year for what we knew would be an off year, and the stadium was under construction. Then they fire the coach, have no clue what the product on the field is going to be, and raise prices again. These guys remind me of my clients, always buying high and selling low.

Answer – Nothing.

IF there were ever beer sales at the Jones, then the prices would be outrageous. By outrageous, I mean, like the prices for a draft at a strip club would be a better bargain.

Ticket Sales
My thoughts are in a fanpost I made the other day but they essentially sum to this: We may actually make less revenue from raising prices if we hit that mythical “tipping point”. Not to mention you can’t grow your ticket revenue much without the stadium full b/c economically that means you need to drop prices. Supply is greater than demand. Considering our stadium is not full and has never been with our expansion, this tells me that we needed to drop prices. Of course they did that with the new seats which is great. But raising them with the other seats is a bad idea.
Plus having a full stadium helps recruiting. I’m not sure if you guys go to ttured’s blog often but the stadium is looking amazing. To see it full is really going to be great. Too bad it won’t be except for maybe the UT game b/c of the idiots in the administration.

I believe we were on the hook to coach Leach for around $2.3M next year. And I think I read we offered Tubs around $1.5M. So if my Texas Tech math serves me, didn’t we just save $800K. I’m pretty sure the coaching budget AT THE MOST is flat year-over-year, but it’s likely decreased.
So how exactly has everything gone up again??? I’m not in a position (live in Cent Tx & middle class) to buy season tickets and I certainly wish I was. But this is the dumbest crap I can recall in a long time. Well, since December anyway.
Might be a good idea for the school and Administration to get a pulse on fan support before they go screwing with ticket prices.
IMWTx
Hilarious
Just caught the fact that we pay Tubs about $800K less than coach Leach. Add that to the $800K Tech didn’t pay for Leach’s year-end bonus and now we should be working with $1.6M in the black.
These guys are unbelievable.
